I absolutely feel confident I could sharpen my own blades now. YOU sir, have finally made it extremely clear to me. Thank you for taking the time to make this video!
1: you never know if your blades are balanced 2: I can take them off and do a much better job and faster. 3: I can inspect my blades for other damage while I got them off. 4: That just doesn't make good since to me. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 But thanks for that question friend.
cool deal Im gonna go ahead and sharpen mine end of this summer. I will have about 20 hours on it by then I imagine. just gonna figure out how to jack it up. I got a tractor jack I could use and some old tires for safety maybe. nice vid I subbed.
Love your video, especially your comments. Obviously you have been doing this a long time and have learned from your experience and your mistakes. Regarding blade wear, especially the rounding of the corners and the effect of leaving a "rooster tail" strip between the blades. Have you ever known blades to wear and actually get shorter? I measure the length of my blades after removing them and get, say, 16.15". Then when I try to find the proper replacement blade, the manual says it should be, say, 16.45". Hard to believe they could shorten that much from wear. The corners are also rounded a bit, and the rooster tails can be pretty bad where the blades overlap. Any comments?
First I want to say thank you for viewing and commenting. As per blade length, They will wear short over time but I believe the biggest issue is blades now-a-days are built to the specs. Meaning you could buy 3 sets of new blades and all 3 could be, 1/16" difference. But yes the rounded corners is the biggest issue.
There's more to shapening lawn mower blades than just running a grinder across it, you have to balance each blade by removing equal amounts of metal from each end, so you don't ruin your spindle bearings
Things don't have to be so complicated my-friend. But I will say a person needs to have common sense and not grind one end down more than the other. Maybe I should have mentioned that. 😉
@@papawsplace wasn't trying to complicate things, just trying to help give first time DIYers, complete information that experience hasn't taught them yet 😉
I really appreciate this reply. I've never balanced a blade in my life, but I should have mentioned to not take off more on one end than the other. I know what you're saying but somethings in these times we are living in has over complicated things. Thanks again and God Bless!
I recommend having 2 sets of blades. When the set on mower needs to be sharpened, simply swap sets. Then sharpen the dull set to be ready for the next swap.
What you you mean by a swamper. A swamper to me is an employee that works under a equipment operator on a construction job or someone on an off shore oil rig.
You left out balancing your blades, if you got a bunch of out of balanced blades you will tear up you mowers parts up. But I feel with the knowledge you showed in this video, you have to balance them and may of left that part out. Some new ppl doing this may nit know balancing is important
New subscriber here. I am trying to remove my Bad Boy MZ Magnum 54”. One guy at the dealer mentioned they were reverse threaded. They aren’t budging with a 3’ breaker bar. Was this blade you removed as easy the first time? I have anti seize for when I mount the blades again. Any help you can provide this country hobby mechanic would be appreciated. All the best! Good video.
Thank you for the Sub. I've always used an impact wrench but they shouldn't be that tight. I have never had a lawn mower with lefthanded threads on the blade myself. Righty Tighty - Lefty Lucy when you are looking up at the bolt from the ground.
@@papawsplace thanks. I used a Ryobi impact wrench I purchased today and it came off after two hits. I was amazed. As I loosened the first one I realized I needed to crank the mower up higher. I have a front wheel life from Harbor Freight and it works pretty well. Thanks for writing back. I now have new blades and understand how to do it. Also I am going to sharpen the old ones as you taught me on the video. Thanks again!
I'm gonna redo this video one day because my focus was on telling people not to over sharpen the blades and I did not show the part that you need to balance the blades. But Thanks for the view and comment.
I’ve tried to tell people, they don’t need to be sharp like a knife. I tell them, just think of a weed eater, the line isn’t sharp and it cuts the grass.
If you have ever seen a hydraulic hose blow, you would never get under anything like you are. You are not fast enough to get out of the way. I blew a hose one time with a load of manure in the bucket. Bang! It was on the ground.

Glad to be of help Lotar23. Lots of people sharpen their blades to sharp and that's why they dull so fast. Thanks again and God Bless!
Good stuff. Enjoyed listening to "The Fireball Mail" as you sharpened, too.
Glad you enjoyed it and ta=hanks for commenting.
Thanks brother!!! A big help!! Got a zero turn "bad boy" myself...down here in coastal Virginia...country living is the best!

Been do so for many a year, but today I went to school on mower blade sharpening,Thankyou.
Don't forget to check the balance on the blades, I forgot to add that in the video. Thanks for commenting.
Thank you sir for a great, very helpful and easy to follow video!

I recommend using an 80 grit flap wheel.
80 grit works great.

I actually have 4 sets for my mower I use daily mowing yards.

I balance my blades
Yes sir, I really should remake this video. I balance blades also when I know they are out bad enough.

That's correct, they are doing them blades more harm than good.
You have to balance the blades or they will ruin your spindle bearings ...
Yes I agree. in this video I did forget to tell people that. But YES I balance my blades. Maybe I should do a video on balancing blades. 🤣🤣
@@papawsplace no problem most know you have to balance blades .
Nail is way we did it years ago but I bought plastic balancer now ...

You don't bounce your blades
I don't bounce them. 😂😂 but I know you mean balance them but I know I forgot to put that in the video. I really need to make a new video on this.
