    • @MikeekiM-vh5se

      Not really trucks always were expensive and were status symbols..
      The base model 1984 Ranger is over $18,000 in todays dollars..$6000 in 1984 was a fair chunk of change as you made $3.35 per hour...In 1988 I worked in a garage and made $4 per hour!! I was a mechanics helper at 17.. people with Trades made $12-$15 per hour..Remember that Ranger was base of base..no options gutless 4 cyl 0-60 23 seconds even the 6 cyl was not much better(Uncle had a 1986 with the V6)..
      Even in the 80's and 90's lots of guys wanted a fullsize 4x4 but trucks were expensive..Not just new but used 10 year old trucks were 4 times the price of a 10 year old car!!
      You dont know that trucks had a base model and other trim levels that cost more money..
      Chrome,2 tone paint was a high end luxury option..Also mag wheels,deluxe wheel covers,deluxe interior,wood trim,power windows,cruise,a/c,tilt etc ..
      Trucks (fullsize) could be as much as a Cadillac ..Even the Ranger could be had in base and several different models, the top end was more than a lot of cars.Yes they had cheap base models but also expensive top end models..
      Example there were lots of fullsize trucks 1/2 tons,3/4 tons and 1 tons even RamChargers,Blazers,Jimmy and Bronco's and Suburbans those were expensive status symbols and people who owned those were wealthy...Equivalent to a new loaded truck today.Even a nice new fullsize were expensive back in the day..A 1984 fullsize 4x4 dually with 2 tone paint and all the chrome and power options was a very expensive truck that wealthy people owned!

      Those fuel economy ratings we're not accurate at all lol. I had a 1990 F-150 302 V8 in high school that would averaged more like 13-15 mpg and that was with fuel injection which in theory should have improved fuel economy over the carbureted 84 trucks. Great truck, not doggin on it at all, but 20mpg+ in any of these 30+ year old trucks is a pipe dream lol.

    • @Momar-o5b

      The 302 V8 was a gas hog. I had a 300 straight 6 with Fords EFI attached to a 5 speed manual and I got well over 20 mpg. Hate to break it to ya bud but absolutely everything was better back then

    • @nathanmcdonald610
      @nathanmcdonald610 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Momar-o5b I am completely aware about how old fuel injection tech is and know that it goes way back before the 1980s, and "I hate to break it to you as well bud" but I having a hard time believing your 300 got "well over 20 mpg" because funnily enough, I owned one of those myself with a 5-Speed later on and 20mpg was completely out of the question. Those old 300's weren't exactly the pinnacle fuel economy. It honestly didn't get that much better than my old 1990 302, hell my Coyote 5.0L F-150 I drive today gets better mileage on average than the 300 I drove for awhile. These 80s' era Fords we're not 30mpg trucks as advertised back then, if you believe they we're you're delusional. Another thing I hate to break to you is that some things we're better back then but some things weren't I love my old Fords but I am under no illusions about what they did well and what they didn't and good fuel mileage was not something did well, regardless of what engine you had under the hood.

    My dad got 20 years out of a 86 Ranger with a 2.9 and 5 speed. It was red. It was almost all original at 379k miles when retired. Still had the original brakes on it, he bought replacements but the factory pads were thicker than the new ones at 300k miles so he returned them. A few radiators, a water pump and an alternator A TFI module was the only electrical issue. He replaced it with a 2006 F150 with a 5.4. It just rolled 40k miles. The worst car he ever owned was a 78 Dodge Aspen, I remember as a kid he had that car torn apart every weekend working on it, finally my mom made him trade it in for the Ranger, he was happy.

      That is crazy..I've had a few rangers with the 2.3 ,5spd, xcab...I squeezed 30 mpg out of full tank once..20gal tank, 600 mi,,,brought a gas can with me just in case..but just wanted to see if I could do it.. that was 2weeks worth of round trip work commute, of about 52miles a day, and a little weekend driving...I consistently got 26-28mpg, 500 -550 miles per tank easy....what are the new gas only rangers getting?..I bet it isn't better...why not?

    Old Ranger sold for 6k. 18k adjusted for 2024 inflation. Today a Ranger is 51k depending on package. This is why I hate unions with a passion. Bosses get huge payouts, union employees get a very small piece of that, and the cost of their demands always gets stuck to the consumer in the same way $20 minimum wage demands made a Big Mac cost $18.

    Back in the day when trucks were the perfect size to get any job done and so easy to work on you. You didn’t have to bring it to mechanic all the time like you have to nowadays. They also look a hell of a lot more attractive compared to today’s trucks of any brand. Ford had it right on the money when they made trucks from the late 70s to the early 90s. Everything nowadays are both overpriced and overrated.

      With the carb, I agree and this is a commercial for the 84. But in 87 you could get the 300 with EFI, I had one of those combined with a five speed manual and got 20mpg plus.
      Honestly, with a five speed manual on the carbureted ones you could have as well. Goofballs that never got out of 2nd a or 3rd got horrible gas mileage. Not the trucks fault, it’s the retard driving it.
