Abergavenny and the Canal Trail to Brecon Cycle Ride

  • A cycle ride along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal from Abergavenny to Brecon town with the start of autumn colours and mirror like surface in the water.
I've been curious about cycling this section of the canal ever since I rode the trail from Newport to Abergavenny in a previous film. We pick up the trail not far off from where I came off last time, in fact it was just around where I sliced my leg on those pedals I had.
The trail is nearly all traffic free with the exception of a short road section where the canal runs through Ashford Tunnel. There are some amazing views from Sugar Loaf mountain at the start through to Pen y Fan and Corn Du mountain peaks in Bannau Brycheiniog (previously Brecon Beacons) as the scenery changes as we progress.
Pick a nice day to do this trail to fully appreciate it and if you want to avoid getting muddy ensure a good few days of dry weather for the trail to dry out. There are many walkers, runners and cyclists in various section to be aware of.
I ran into some rain around half way both on the way and on the return journey, it's always worth taking a shower proof layer.
The trail from Abergavenny is around 27 miles not including cycling around the town or from the station. As there is no longer a railway station in Brecon town it's worth being aware of the return journey, in all the ride was around 55 miles.
I hope you enjoy this canal cycle ride.

Thank you for this video. There are parts of the canal on my 'to do' list. It looks very nice. Some really nice footage there. 👍

Yes, it makes a good cross country trail bike. Padded cycle shorts are a must ☺️

Yes very pretty ride, especially with autumn colours and it feels like it goes on forever.

Another photographic marvel, that tree is something else and you just have to stand there in awe when your stood in front of it.

Yes, I wasn’t expecting that tree. Seemed so grand and out of place. Beautiful. Thanks!

Well done - quite a ride that! I did it earlier this year on my Brompton - but not all in one go like you just did. Hope you enjoyed that carrot cake - looked very good - they do a great one at Goytre Wharf if you go in the other direction on canal from Abergavenny. The bike looked just a littttttle bit muddy at the end! 🙂

Well done, that’s quite a challenge though I think a Brompton is at home on a canal tow path. I know the place you mean. I stopped at Goytre Wharf the first time I rode the canal on the Newport to Abergavenny section but I didn’t stop for cake at the Goytre sadly. I think I can imagine riding that bit again one day.

Yes, riding towpaths is why I bought the Brompton (for when I have my narrowboat). But they're very uncomfortable on some of the bumpy/stony sections you sometimes get on towpaths. A bike like yours is much better for that - although you can't fold it up of course like a Brompton! I hope you can ride the other bit again one day and can try out the cafe! 👍

A friend was showing me a Brompton a few weeks ago. They’re very clever. They need a fat-tyre version that you can run low pressure to sop up some of those bumps.

Yes, good suggestion. They recommend about 100 psi for the supplied Schwalbe Marathon tyres - so its a great ride on the road and the bike is really well made. I've been very impressed so far - but the gearing is too high for hills - so really its at its best riding around a city. Lots of modifications available though!

Did it a few times on my Birdy, ended up in the canal on one occasion, recently bought a Brompton, fold is better, but the Birdy is a better ride

    That was GREAT! 🙂
Totally inspired me to give it a try if we get a sunny dry weekend before the winter sets in properly!
One question: how were the people you met on the towpath with regards to bikes? Any hostility?

    • @MadisonTen
      @MadisonTen  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thank you, Kenneth. Generally no. Most people will say hello, some don't. What I do is make sure I ping my bell a long way in advance just so people know I'm there and aren't shocked by a bike coming by, but I also slow right down to just over walking pace. I think it makes a difference. With frail people, especially when there isn't much room I'll get off my bike and either wait and let them pass or walk the bike past.

Haha. I wash it after every dirty ride but by the end of some rides, usually in the winter, it will be stinking. See Gloucester ride 🤭🚴🏻‍♀️
