  • In this video I attempt to cycle across Wales from the Shropshire border to the coast at Barmouth. I pass through many welsh villages that I can't pronounce and past the gorgeous Lake Vyrnwy.
I will be using parts of the national cycle network, including route 81 and route 8 as it makes its way along the The Mawddach Trail, and across the Barmouth railway bridge.
    Part two out now.
Join me for the Challenge! Thanks for watching!

I've ridden from Condover into Shrewsbury and then followed the entire NCR 81 in a days riding before - roughly 120m. Thats a tough old route with plenty of climbing to get stuck into along the way. Although I've ridden these roads on your chosen route to the coast I've not cycled this exact direction to Barmouth. Must give it a go. Thanks.

Glad you enjoyed the video and definitely a ride worth doing if you get the chance. I’ve done route 81 from Shrewsbury to Newtown and some in the Elan valley, and yes it’s a hilly old ride! Planning to get videos done on the missing bits I haven’t yet covered between Birmingham and Aberystwyth. Thanks for watching!

that climb out of Vyrnwy is brutal, but its incredibly scenic. I did it on a circular route across to Bala, so I had to do it again on the way back...yey!. I've done a cross wales run, will have to give this route a go on my bike next year.

It is a killer of a climb but 100% worth it for the views and that descent! FairPlay for doing it twice in one ride! Thanks for watching and safe cycling!

Great video N8 - looking to do something similar myself, on a pedal assist ebike with a range of about 40 miles, so will plan an overnight stop. Looking forward to part 2.

Thank you! I day dreamed of some e assistance on some of those climbs! Would be a great ride, the hills may reduce your range, just something to be mindful of as I wouldn’t want to pedal an e bike uphill unassisted! Part two will be out next week and I will put the GPX link for the route in the description too for anyone who wants to do it. Safe cycling!

Fab! Quite a feat to do on your own… did you have another rider with you or any help?

I can't understand why anybody would want to ride across such a beautiful place in a day? You never really had the chance to take in the true beauty of why cycling in Wales has to offer! Each to their own I guess...

Completely understand this, Wales has so many beautiful places that take time to take in properly. I live very close to the border and have cycled, visited, camped and stayed many places over the years so I have had a chance to take the sites. For this ride I wanted a challenge, and the beauty of Wales was a bonus along the way, even if I couldn’t hang around. Thank you for watching!

Because sometimes its great fun to challenge yourself and push / test your abilities. There are plenty of rides to be had where you slow down and enjoy the scenery. Not all rides need to be like that. Like you've said, each to their own. It would be a dull old world if we all did the same thing hey!
