  • Designing For is a series which looks at a level in gaming, and analyzes a theme central to that level's design. In this episode, we take a look at a kart racing track in Crash Team Racing that flows just as well for new players as it does for the most experienced.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Slightly different team management this time, but it was always a joint effort anyway. In this episode's case:
    Voiceover/Game Footage/Audio Editing/Writing: Tommy Eyler/Pyrrhickong/The Dryest Bones ( / pyrrhickong )
    Script Editing/Additional Footage/Video Editing: Zack Frisbee/Goombachi

    Excellent video! Papu's Pyramid is one of the THE tracks in CTR, and seems all the more special because it comes so early in the game before Polar Pass, Cortex Castle, Hot Air Skyway and so on. And yet it has elements from all of them - things trying to destroy you (plants), 90 degree turns, 2 shortcuts - 1 easy and 1 super hard, and great opportunities for power sliding. Easy to learn, hard to master - that's Papu's Pyramid.
    Thanks for bringing back all the memories! I remember when my sister started playing CTR, my cousin and I got her to play all the 'cool' later tracks, then one day we were about to race and we told her "Let's do Papu's pyramid" and she's like "Which one is that one?", and we were like "Omg, you haven't played CTR until you have played Papu's Pyramid!"
    Please do some of the other tracks as well!

    there are 2 more short cuts on this track. One is much better than the one u showed and the other not so much but u get a nice jump boost which will help u stick the last shortcut. You can get all 3 of em in quick succession and shave major seconds off your time if u good enough to land them all on every lap

    Wacky races starring Dick Dastardly and muttly for Europe/international ps2 release
    In all seriousness that’s a good game and all the characters play so differently from each other that they all play the same race track unlike each other racer.

    Implying Star Wars Ep.I: Racer is a cheap kart racer is a huge mistake. That game is not only pretty good, but also nothing like a kart racer.

    • @DesigningFor
      @DesigningFor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No implication as to its quality was made, just that it is one of the most successful N64 games largely due to its licensing. I haven't played it much, myself.
      It might not have the exact same gameplay as a kart racer, but the mentality as to its creation was the same: capitalize an existing popular franchise by making a racing game out of it.

    • @Eichro
      @Eichro 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It makes a lot of sense in context. It is based on that movie's pod racing section, not some racing theme just tacked on to make some quick bucks. And that particular section was to many the best part of Episode I.
      In concept, it's very similar to that Harry Potter Quidditch Cup game.

    • @DesigningFor
      @DesigningFor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Again, it has nothing to do with the quality of the game or how much sense it makes. It was released at the height of the kart racing boom, making it easy for a publisher to sign off on it, and an easy buy for a lot of people, hence its success.
      If you compare it to Rogue Squadron, another concept that makes a lot of sense that is even more beloved by its fanbase, Episode I: Racer sold 50% more copies: a whole million copies more. That difference is because racing games are a "safe" genre for a lot of uninformed buyers to invest their money into, and therefore a "safe" genre for a lot of publishers.

    • @Eichro
      @Eichro 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it was released when kart racing games were all the rage and admittedly that might've helped decide to go forward with the project, but I don't think it was the main motivation. It was also released alongside the movie, and there wouldn't be a better opportunity to take advantage of the potential for exploring the racing aspect of the movie.

    • @DesigningFor
      @DesigningFor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The games that get made aren't usually the ones that have the most artistic potential for AAA games. They're the ones which best match market trends. As fun as it may be, there is little to be explored by Episode I Racer that wasn't already done before and better by F-Zero X. But the kart racing boom, combined with the strong license, got Episode I Racer signed off, as well as the sales that it had. If you disagree with me, that's fine, but personally, I think "thirteenth best selling N64 game of all time" has more to do with the mood of the market at the time than simply "the pod racing scene in Episode I was really cool."
