  • Designing For is a series which looks at a level in gaming, and analyzes a theme central to that level's design. In this episode, we look at the titular level from Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, a brutal gauntlet of a level that tests something not usually well respected these days -- a player's endurance.

    New Goal: Beat the Impossible Lair with 0 Bees. Does this award you with anything? I feel like I need to.

      the golden tonic

    • @extyr
      @extyr ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yes. You get the golden try tonic. It doubles the amount of quills you gain.
      At launch, you had to win the first time on a fresh save, but they patched in a toggle to do it at any time.
      As one of the few insane people to do it, let me tell you it's absurdly hard.
      You'll need to spend hours upon hours practicing and watching videos to understand what you're doing wrong.
      Still, I preferred doing that than farming quills mindlessly to unlock the remaining tonics.

      It will award you with at least 3 rare mental illnesses from the broken sanity of trying to do this run who's built to be so long and difficult that damage boost becomes a blessing.

    One of the best games of the year for sure. I'm surprised you didn't decide to analyze the overworld as that was something I haven't seen in a mainstream platformer before. But your topic choice was a good one, too!

    • @pyrrhickong
      @pyrrhickong 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Overworld is fantastic and really fun to play with, and it lets the dual-level system be really fleshed out and have each level variant feel like a reward to find and unlock, but I'm an absolute sucker for pacing and the sheer tension I got from "OH CRAP there's an escape sequence and I have ZERO BEES AND NO LAYLEE" and nailing that run was, like, instantly script-worthy. Overworld is more complimentary to the overall game's design, while the Impossible Lair is more its climax that all that exploration builds up to, y'know? Absolutely excellent, far exceeds its contemporaries, gets that collectathon puzzle solving itch scratched without becoming super obtrusive, but I was SHAKING finishing the lair.
      Thank you very much for watching!

    The Impossible Lair seriously reminds me of a ROBLOX game with just as much length in its challenges, but a difficulty that can reach a point of practical impossibility: Juke's Towers of Hell. Some of its hardest challenges, mostly in the secret area Pit of Misery, are to the point that only 2-6 people have legitimately completed them, and some, like Citadel of Infinite Void, not even being beaten by someone, which is why the devs made it so they don't contribute to completion. Also, there isn't something that helps you through it like extra hit points or some crazy useful items, so all that can win you the game is sweat, dedication, and raw skill.

    Strangely, even though I was a massive fan of the original Yooka-Laylee, for whatever reason I didn't bother coming around to its spin-off until pretty recently. As a perfectionist and completionist by nature, recently I've been grinding at the beetalion-less run of the Lair, and for anyone who's played the game, you should be well aware of what that entails. During this process, I seem to have come to exactly the same conclusions as those outlined in this video. All things considered, I get angry at myself fairly quickly when I fail at something that I feel that I've prepared well for. Somehow, this particular level right here seems to mitigate that problem entirely. It's really quite fascinating - instead of becoming angry and wishing I were somewhere else, I just feel depressed but still driven to press forward and see how far I can get before insanity sets in.

      @@KiraSlith No, that's not it, I've loved 2D platformers almost as much as I love 3D platformers for as long as I can remember. In retrospect, the more likely reason is that its announcement was COMPLETELY overshadowed by the contemporary announcement of Banjo & Kazooie coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which sent me in a frenzy to get a Switch and a copy of that game. The new Yooka-Laylee just kinda fell off of my list of priorities, until it went on deep discount for Xbox in mid-2021.
      P.S. To this day I still haven't beaten the Beetalion-less Impossible Lair challenge...

    It's neat to see them at least understanding what made the levels in DKC work so well and managed to make a great 2D platformer. AT least from what I've heard as I haven't played this game myself.

    As someone who is a HUGE DKC fan (the advanced port was my first video game ever)...maybe I should give this game a shot.
    I never really liked the first Yooka-Laylee, it failed at a collect-a-thon 3d plat-former where others shined, but this seems like such a callback and as someone who's been itching for a new DKC, I think it's time I give this duo a second shot.

    If at first you don't succeed, then try, try, try again. Playtonic may have failed the first time, but their heart was in the right place and their second try was an outstanding success.
    How many tries will it take for yours?

    There is one Friday Night Funkin mod who does something similar to this, and it's the Vs. Sonic.exe mod. At the third song, Triple Trouble, you're met to fight Xenophanes in one of its largest form and... sadly enough, it's the only game where you'll ever see him with crystal quills... since Lord X took his role as the X Prime of the exeverse.
    But where it shines is with the mechanic: More incredible than draining life out of the player, more incredible than making notes you aren't supposed to, more incredible than doing an incredibly lame job at charting a song... Xenophanes... actually lets you make usage of a helpful gimmick. The rings can be collected by pressing space each time a ring aligns with the key-line, adding a ring to your amount. And when you miss a note, instead of penalizing you for that, the game... simply removes a ring from you. This is incredibly great for a song like Triple Trouble who's longer than 8 minutes. It feels fair, since the game isn't just throwing bad stuff at you: It evens out the score by helping you out the way they can.
