Led Zeppelin is a close 2nd. Zeppelin wasn't as creative across genres as The Beatles, but they have a better hit to miss ratio (I think). Zep NEVER could've written Eleanor Rigby, and Beatles never could've written Misty Mountain Hop. But it's not a competition.

I heard Ray Davies being interviewed on Talksport quite a few years ago on the H&J Show. Davies being a keen football fan. He spoke highly of The Beatles as being a great, tight live band. That is some compliment. The cinemas and theatres in the UK couldn't cope with the amplification being used by The Beatles. Lennon often bawling at Epstein and stage technicans as to how crap the sound balancing and lighting was. No wonder he became fed up with touring.
