    I spooled my new (and first) baitcaster reel today in the following manner:
    I placed the spool in an empty Maxwell House Coffee container.
    I put a flame to each end of a coffee stirrer, to round the ends, so they wouldn't abrade my braided line, which I passed through the stirrer.
    Then, I put the coffee stirrer (with the line inside) horizontally in a vise, and tightened the vise so that the stirrer squeezed the line just enough to make the line a little difficult to pull out with the reel - the reason being that if I spooled the line to the reel too loosely, I'd end up with a mess because the line would dig into softer layers of line below.
    Now if only tomorrow's weather will cooperate...

    If it's the re is spinning clockwise to our perspective, isn't it counterclockwise to his perspective? Who's perspective, or which orientation determines which way a reel spins?

    Nice video! I've heard that if you accidentally spool up your spinning reel incorrectly, putting the spool in warm-hot water changes the memory to the spool, but I haven't tried it lol I don't fish with spinning gear much! :D

    I'm not a pro but I have gotten a few ppl into bassin b/c we catch fish. You actually want it to feed off counter-clockwise, not clockwise off of the new line spool for spinners... b/c that is essentially clockwise if you are looking at it from the bottom, up... which is the same direction that it is going on the spinner. A spinner for should only have like 6-8# mono also if using it for bass(finesse). If you need to go with stronger line, get a baitcaster; its more powerful and needs thicker line to perform well anyway. Start with 30# braid minimum for caster. My two cents, thanks and tight lines!

  • @shred5
    @shred5 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I believe when you are spooling up the spinning reel, the line should be coming off counter clockwise, as the reel is spinning clockwise from the top, but counter clockwise from the bottom.
    Think of it this way, if you had someone hold the spool sideways and you lined up the reel from behind, you would see it coming off in the same direction. So if you look at it from the top and see it coming off clockwise, it could be counter clockwise off the spool.

    one hint for spooling by yourself is if you can have a coper wrier something ridged but you can still bend and hook the end on something with line spool in the center and just go to town

    To help prevent backlash, you will want to allow the spool to spin the line off as you crank on the reel, then you will ensure that the line goes on the reel straight. If the line comes off of the spool side then the line is coming off twisted. This will cause a lot more backlash.

    Bait caster line gets spooled from supply line spool by having line coming off the top of the supply line spool, the supply line spool should be laying horizontally facing you, Use a pencil or some sort of axle to allow the supply line spool to turn horizontally toward you. spool enough line to where the line is about 1/8th inch from the side edge of you reel spool

    12-15lb test? Baitcaster? Wha...
    We've always used 8-10lb on a good open face reel like a Shimano Spirex rear drag. Never had a need for large test line with either large or small mouth here in Ohio.

    • @str8frmthacr8
      @str8frmthacr8 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea, I think it's crazy that people use 65lb test. Lol! I understand it's purpose, but I don't horse my fish out that much. the heaviest i've ever gone was 20lb braid for my frog/top water rod. I changed that out pretty quick, lol.

    • @shred5
      @shred5 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 12lb test big game line is surprisingly strong! Now if it's Trilene XL, you might need 20lb test to be just as strong or even higher!

    • @Alex35c
      @Alex35c 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Praise Kek people use high # braid for punching matts of grass and heavy vegetation where something like 20# might have an issue once you hook up a heavy lure, plus a big bass and a ton of weeds stuck to your line. it helps to pull the fish outta cover, and i know alot of people who use high test braid for pike instead of using steel leaders

    • @InnerCityPigeon
      @InnerCityPigeon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use 6 lb on most occasions and I hit the most out of all my friends. Takes a little more time to land but way more fun and productive. It takes practice and allot of learning will happen but I promise you 6 lbs is the way to go if you love the fight no matter what size. If I am fishing around allot of structure I use 50 lbs braid with a 12 inch leader tied with an FG knot of 10 lbs fluorocarbon. Can't be beat.

    @Hatcambass so when your speaking about the line going on the right way, I'm having an issue when opening my bail to cast on my spinning reel the line jumb off. Take not note I'm very new to fishing so when I bought my rod reel combo I asked my local academy to spool it for me based on what your describing of bad spooling I'm guessing my wasn't done properly.

    • @HatCamBass
      @HatCamBass  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mono and fluoro tend to jump off the spool after spooling even if it was done in the right direction. It takes time to conform to the shape of the spool, but you can speed up that process by placing your spool (with the line spooled on) into a cup of warm water for about 10 minutes. That might fix your problem. Otherwise, they may have spooled it wrong at academy.

      I found that when spoiling up my spinning reel the supply spool (FOR ME) needs to be feeding counter clock wise, I use the worm/hot water trick for 15+ minutes. So far after doing 2 reels it works perfectly 🎣

    general rule of thumb, point your rod tip away from you, with your spinning reel attached. turn handle on your spinning reel like you would if your reeling in to catch a fish. Pay attention to which way the reel is turning, more than likely counter clock wise. If so, place the supply line spool flat on a flat surface, so that the line unspools counter clock wise as well. You want the line coming off the supply line spool the same direction the reel turns. spool enough line to where the line is about 1/8th inch from the front edge of you reel spool

    • @samh4232
      @samh4232 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      go with 20-30lb braid then to a 6'-7' leader and that will depend on what you're wanting to do. If you're fishing grass or weeds strait braid and go with 45-60lbs.

    • @mrmisterman999
      @mrmisterman999 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mono is good for top water cranks, jerks etc because it floats. Fluoro better for jigs, texas/carolina/ned/neko etc. And braid is best just for backing if you want to use a fluoro or mono leader.

      +HatCamBass so bait casters are ideal for beginners? I've seen other recommendations for spinning being more suited for beginners I'm confused 😔

    • @HatCamBass
      @HatCamBass  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      One is not more suited for beginners than the other imo. I've taught people of all ages who have never fished before how to use a baitcaster and all of them picked it up pretty quickly. I think the difficulty comes if you ONLY have experience using a spinning reel and you are making the switch...or vice versa. Just a matter of perspective.

      Yes! On baits with treble hooks (like crankbaits), sometimes you want the high stretch so that you don't pull the hook out of their mouth too soon. Gives the fish a little time to take it as you set the hook.

    Just my opinion from subjective, personal experience and is meant as anecdotal evidence...not fact or expertise (sad those caveats are required these days) but if found that if you use your pole and its flexibility 'correcrtly' (read: use its physics to increase your lines strength), you don't need 20lb test to land a 20lb fish confidently. I've caught 40+lb salmon on 25lb test.
    Where I live, the state record for largemouth is under 13lbs......soooo, watching dudes use 17lb test for bass (which is common up here, for somw reason) is just asinine.
    ......and no, they aren't they type using the same gear for pike or musky. They legit tell me that bass fight so hard, a 5lb bass will snap 10lb test.
    ........this is why I fish alone, I might add. I dont talk like this (in before that shit) while fishing...but bass dudes here are like the Rex Kwon Do guy from Napoleon Dynamite.
