  • The Devil's Path is a “Classic” Great American Hike in the Catskills region of New York State. It's an end to end hike that can be traversed in either direction. We hiked it East to West starting at the Prediger Road Trailhead. Day one we hiked over the peaks of Indian Head, Twin, and Sugarloaf Mountains before camping the night near the Mink Hollow Lean-to. On Day two we hiked over the peak of Plateau Mountain before hiking the 2 mile ridge line and descending into the Devil's Tombstone. We then climbed up Hunter setting up a stealth camp along the arm of Southwest Hunter before quickly hiking to peak bag Hunter. On day 3 we hiked up to Southwest Hunter Mountain before backtracking and descending into Diamond Notch Falls. We then Hiked up to West Kill Mountain and hiked the ridge before finally descending and getting picked up at the Spruceton Road Trailhead.

Outstanding Vid. Took the Devil's Pass in 2017, after sitting-in the truck for several thunderstorm cells to pass. Around 6 p.m., the blue-sky returned, with less humidity. Managed to complete trail. Reminded me of the Coyote Wall Loop trail, in Oregon. Appears easy. Starts-off easy, then you start considering whether to go back or keep going.

Thanks for the fantastic video, it really captures the experience of the Devil's Path!
    >>I grew up in Hunter, and a few years ago undertook the apocryphal 'local challenge' to hike the entire 30-mile, 6-peak trail from Platte Clove to Mink Hollow in a single day, with my dad -- definitely an experience to remember! We began by ascending Indian Head for the sunrise and ended with groping our way down the northwest flank of Westkill after nightfall, with flashlights (the night comes on dangerously quickly in the mountains and we got our pacing slightly wrong)... pretty exhausting! Let's just say it makes a much nicer hike split into two or three legs, so you can take in the stunning scenery and not have to cram down sandwiches on the go! ⛰🏕⛰

Dude you need to be concerned what works for you and don't be concerned what the audience thinks. Trust me the more comfortable you are the more fun you will have and that is ALL that matters.

How long do you think the devil's path trail would take to do without the ancillary mountains you did?

The side trails we took weren't very long and together added maybe 2.5 hours of additional hiking. Plenty of people day hike the entire trail or do it in 2 days.

How many places have they named Devil in forests and national parks ? 🤔 it's definitely alarming how these so called names are chosen and they whomever they are name these places devil this devil that... wonder why the fixation on Satan

I think your overthinking it. I think the way the devil is used has nothing to do with satin. I think they often mean badass. My daughters soccer team was called the She Devil’s and I never for a second did the word satin come into my head.

@@mtadams2009 if you follow missing 411 by David paulides you will see a pattern of bizzare dissapearances in places with the name "Devil " in it. All I'm saying is the word is used over and over throughout our forests and National Parks. I just find it odd the insane amount of people who go in to these areas and are never ever seen or heard from again. The reason I brought up Satan is because of the vast network of people you would not believe are all around us whom worship him. The word occult means hidden ( often times in Plain sight ) I totally get what uour saying it's a common word NJ Devils or your daughters team name and I have absolutely zero issue with any of it. Its a cool name... my reference is entirely based off of sheer amount of people ( experienced hikers, hunters etc ) who have gone missing in places with the name "devil" in the description of the area. Sorry for any confusion.

The Native Americans who inhabited the Catskills, believed the great spirits dwelled in the mountains. Even the early settlers feared the dark foreboding forests, covered in deep hemlock groves. Many tales and stories originated from the Catskills. It’s part of their unique mystique.
