You guys are great!! You're so respectful of each other, nature, and appreciative of your surroundings...I love it! I have been to the Adirondacks hundreds of times and it never gets old🥰. I am from New York, and now am in Northern New Jersey, so I don't get there nearly as often as I'd like to.
I've watched this video probably three times now. It is amazing how you've captured the beauty, making it feel like we are there with you. The music is perfect; gentle as nature and, all that it entails is, and should be treated 😌❤.

This is the first time I've watched a hiking video on my own volition. For some reason I thought it was going to be around 30 minutes. Once I saw it was 52 minutes, I figured I'd watch it in segments. Except that I didn't, because the video was captivating as the 52 minutes flew right by.
While hiking and camping aren't hobbies of mine, it was nice to escape to an outdoor setting and be a fly on the [rucksack] of your journey. The music was very fitting and relaxing, the narration was great, but aside from everything else, I think what did it for me was the picture in beautiful 4K. For one of the shots, the image was so clear, I thought Dan was going to walk out of frame and right out of my screen into the apartment.
I don't know if I'll ever have the guts to have this kind of adventure myself, so it's nice to be able to get a glimpse of your perspective: The little challenges that come with just trying to have a meal or set up to go to bed and the (slugs) struggles along the way; The sights from the tops of the mountains to the little rivers with interesting facts that go with them; The foreboding fears and concerns that I'd never understand if I didn't witness it here; And the view of the early mornings and rewarding stars in the dark night skies. You really take the time to stop and smell the roses in between what must be grueling physical and mental efforts.
Since this is the first video of yours that I've seen, I can't make any proper comparisons. However, one thing that I think would be really cool to do for future videos (and hopefully wouldn't be too difficult): I appreciated the map you showed us towards the beginning of the video, highlighting your trail path. If there was a way you could occasionally bring that map back up and show your progress for about 5-10 seconds so that the viewer can recognize how far you've come and what your plan for the day is, I think that would be really cool. No additional animation really, more of just a "You are here" indicator. Not essential by any means, just a thought. Great job!

@@jonhill3629 Glad you enjoy the content. I try not to talk too much about gear even though I am quite the gear head. Lots of channels focus on gear, I want to focus on the experiences and journeys the gear takes you on. Perhaps one of these days I'll get the crew together to talk about our gear in an impromptu kinda way for a video but that's not really a focus on the channel.
Fantastic work on this video. A buddy and I hiked a very similar route to yours in the Fall of 2020 and your film just perfectly captures the WHOLE experience. There are many people making movies of their hiking trips, but yours stand out. The flora and fauna, the vistas, the physical and mental battle juxtapostioned with the little details of your camp life and your gear...no-one else is really doing all of this. Further, your musical choices are thoughtful and right on point, capturing the interior emotional experience. Thank you.

Great video. Reminds me of my younger days in the 1970s doing Avalanche Lake, Marcy, and Gothics over the course of 3 trips.
Great, great video. View from Haystack (3rd highest) is rated best view in the high peaks. You should do Algonquin, 2nd highest, easy day hike, incredible view of Marcy, Range, Colden, lakes below and all points north. 2nd rated view. Both are spectacular.
In 1967 I took about 6 boys, started at Garden parking lot, and did Gothics, Saddleback, Basin and Haystack in one day. Came down Phelps trail. 20 miles. Weather was clear as a bell. 70 degrees late August. One of the best days of my life.

Really digging your style choices for this video. Too many videos out there are loud, obnoxious and just "too much". The music choices, post hike narration with a proper mic, cinematography and editing are all very well done. It's clear you've put a lot of thought and work into this. I've only watched this one video so far but I'd say your work rivals Kraig Adams, and is some of the best I've seen on TH-cam. Definitely subbing and look forward to further videos from you. Thanks!

This brings back many fond memories of previous Adirondack hikes including Mt Marcy. great job in recording the feeling and special nature of the place and the event. you made it especially challenging for the extra destinations you added along the way. that goes beyond what I had done but wish I did. so glad you were able to experience the awesome challenge and satisfaction of seeing parts of the Adirondacks only a few will ever see.

Well crafted edit from great footage. Love the emphasis on aesthetic vignettes, subtle tonal musical moods and nature sounds. Struggles are presented with a sense of perspective and restraint. I like the experential, sensory approach (as opposed to a trailguide or pure diary w endless selfie chatter) and the shifts in scale as well as between grandeur and the mundane. I get a sense of how to cope, enjoy and finesse the rigors, hand in hand with why one would undertake said rigors. Great, thoughtful style, keep it up. BTW re: no tent on shelter trips v. getting caught out between shelters? Leave the tent, carry a tarp.

Last May I did Marcy and Gray on a day hike. Lake Tear of the Clouds looked a lot less nasty when I filled (and filtered) my water from there, lol. Wonderful video.
Great Job! I haven’t been able to do the big Adirondack hikes for a long time, but you made it all fresh in mind again. The mix of slow, arty shots, hiking scenes, and long views was very well done. You really brought this old 46er along with you! Hiking in the fall is really good. No bugs! Well, the slug…. Winter hiking is the very best, though, IMO, so I’ll look forward to THAT video.

Wonderful Video !
Had great experiences (OK some not so great - Soaking weekends) doing my 46. Started in 1985; finished in 2010 (after driving up from NC). Never got certified. That's how I chose my TH-cam moniker, Anorthosite: It's the actual igneous rock type (not granite) that forms most of the Upper/Lower ranges. It's also what forms most of the Lunar crust. When you stand on top of Marcy, know that the rock under your feet formed 18 MILES beneath the surface, as the underpinnings of a Himalayan-scale range that formed more than a billion years ago. Remnants of the same, and related rock types, also outcrop more extensively to the north, in the Laurentian Mountains of eastern Canada. In surface outcrop, the Adirondacks connect to them via the Thousand Islands region. Since I was last there, there were numerous "fresh" rock slides in the High Peaks, from the hurricane that hit the region and New England several years ago.

@@GreatAmericanHikes I finished (2010) SOLO, day-hiking UP the Cables to Armstrong, and then on to Upper Wolfjaw. Next Day, I (RE)did Haystack (which I/we had previously done in Cold/Rain/Wind/Near-zero visibility - still not sure WHY ! XD). 2010 Haystack summit: Clear Fall Weather - but the Foliage was mostly Gone. Roll of the Dice.
THEN, Just as I returned to my base-lean-to (Near JBL), the Skies Opened Up, overnight and into next day (slept well, tho wondering where I might find my Garcia Bear Canister, next morn). Packed out in heavy rain...then drove to Noonmark Diner, to Feast/Celebrate.

Looking forward to my 2022, High-Peaks escapade. Stopping & hiking Black Bear & Blue Mountain, first(A warm-up). Mountain biking all-the-way, then it's on foot ascending the peaks. Last time I was up Mount Marcy & Haystack my father carried me a majority of the ascents. Older, bigger(255 pounds), and hopefully prepared. Just a three-week venture, away from society.
That's some serious dedication to coffee to bring the grinder with you as a luxury item. :) Great video.

Just echoing what others are saying: great video! Really enjoyed the way you captured the experience, from the great vistas to the little ones. (Mushrooms, caterpillars, coffee, etc.) I would add that not every moment of the outdoor experience needs a soundtrack. I would've appreciated more natural sounds.

Nice job with the hike and filming! While resting a broken foot, it provided me entertainment and motivation to get out there and finish up the 46. I am half way done and live in Keene and have no excuse to finish them off. That was a big hike but you pulled it off! Was that during late spring? There was a lot of water and chilly temperatures present.

Info for non-ADK'ers: There's 46 peaks over 4k' - climb all 46 and you're a 46er - but there's some rather unique categories of 46er: Fastest (aided & the more impressive unaided), age, youngest to oldest - and the most challenging 46er, Winter 46er and barefoot 46er.

Bushnell Falls! You can get to it by taking the Phelps trail.

How did you get Gaia gps to have the nat geo Adirondack maps??
When I made the video it was the stock map on Gaia gps. Not sure if it's nat geo specifically, though.
How do you go back to where you came?you cal uber?
We hike in a loop back to our car.
There's a better way to do this sort of thing: use the lean-tos as a base camp, but DAY HIKE up the peaks. It's better for the trails and you won't have to carry the weight.
From an avid ADK hiker there were a few mistakes with your plan. 1. If you are doing this track do skylight it is only an extra mile. 2. come down the other side of Colden and hit Avelanche Pass on your way out. it is 100% worth it. See yall next time
