Holy crap that's crazy. It speeds up so quickly and smoothly. And here am I am sometimes speeding to 140km/hr on the highway at midnight in my mom's mini van thinking I'm bad ass.
+Matthew Brezinma Haha I just went 180 max a week ago. Fuck the rush man! I shouldn't get addicted to this lol. But sometimes at night when it's 3AM and there's no cars on the highway, it's hard to resist.
+paulsen Yep. I think in Norway you need to have minimum H or higher rated tires no matter if you're driving a Prius or a Model S. But checking them for damage and wear is probably good practice before going onto the autobahn regardless.
+oisiaa It's a real shame that the speed limits are so low on those huge, straight roads. It's really just another way for the gov to make more money by giving a lot of tickets. It's a shame. Plus, you can be sent to prison for speeding... I get not going 100 in town, but on some roads, where you barely meet another car... come on...
+oisiaa lol you REALLY don't. I get to drive there often and, no offense, you guys (I mean most americans) don't have the German discipline needed for this kind of speed. I wouldn't go as far as to say Americans don't know how to drive (because I've seen some crazy shit out there), but let's just keep the speed limits.
thedon008 I agree the current speeds need some upgrading. However eliminating them is irresponsible. And as you may very well know, 99% of people already don't respect the majority of posted speed limits and who can blame them.
PINGPONGROCKSBRAH Montana's interstates used to have no speed limits :P But yeah, I was surprised how bad the roads were in California, even around SF.
PINGPONGROCKSBRAH Germany is half the size of Texas, Autobahn costs a lot to build and maintain so its probably too expensive. We have a lot of speed limits on the Autobahn for bumpy roads, missing emergency lane, missing road painting, tunnels and so on.
PINGPONGROCKSBRAH Americans don't like paying taxes or building roads properly (because they don't like paying taxes), so we have to get by with the garbage we have-- although some states do better than others with their money (a lot better in some cases). Some of that probably has to do with corruption and cronyism too. Personally, I'd rather pay more taxes and have better infrastructure and services, but alas, it's a democratic vote and my vote is only one.
babybirdhome Americans don't like paying taxes because the government doesn't know how to manage money. Would you want to keep giving money to a drunk who keeps buying booze with it? They have trillions of dollars to work with every year, they have enough to fix our damn roads.
babybirdhome Americans pay enough taxes. The problem is that the taxes are not used for it was collected for. Between federal and state Americans pay $98 billion dollars on road tax every year alone and still roads are not fixed because that money is used for something else.
I was really scared for you at times. Obviously, you made it okay, but still, all that traffic and you going over 200 kph! This video was very cool. The car did great!
Astrogirl1usa The car performed flawlessly. Overheating is exaggerated. If I have the time and space next time, I'll prove that Model S can go 200 km/h for 40 minutes covering about 130 km.
Hinterhof96 When I was very young; driving 120+ miles per hour in my 1969 Chevelle SS was nothing special to me. I bought one used, in 1977 and it was in really good condition. I loved that car! Since then, I've seen my share of car wrecks. Not mine, but others. That changed my mind about going so fast on public roads. Also, becoming a parent makes you think twice about doing something like that. I know on the Autobahn it's legal and maybe expected. Here, we have long stretches of Interstate, or Intrastate, (depends on how big your state is), highways. That's our 'unofficial autobahn', as long as you have a radar detector, of course. :)
I can confirm that it is not unusual to drive that fast in Germany. To be honest: That's the way I drive when there is no speed limit (and when there are not too many moving obstacles ;) but in South Germany such perfect situations like in the video are rare)
As a German I say: this is my favorite video :) It reminds of my driving style ;) And finally I can see how great a Tesla is. Too often Germans say you can't drive that fast for so long in a Tesla.
Steppenkater The limitation here was that I ran out of road. I should try out driving at 200 km/h average for 100-140 km to see how it goes. I think as long as I don't do max accelerations and regen then the car won't overheat.
I would make some suggestions but I have no idea at what time and place the conditions would be suitable for this experiment. But there is a time with daylight were nearly all Autobahnen are empty: FIFA World Cup ;)
Steppenkater FIFA-what? I don't watch sports :P By the way, I have a few people making remarks of my driving. They say that I should have used the right lane more. I agree with them. But at that time when I was driving, I didn't feel like jumping back and forth between the lanes. Would you have stayed in the left lane if you were driving in 200+ km/h?
Bjørn Nyland Not technically. you still have to go to work, and I don't think the speed limits in Norway are that high. At all. Anywhere. They aren't even that high in America.
Michael Moses There are NO places on American roads that allow 125mph. The highest speed limit in America now is a 40 mile stretch of road between Austin Tx and San Antonio which is limited to 85mph but I would think you would not be stopped and ticketed if you drove 95. The good news for American drivers is the Interstate speed limits are being raised everywhere. In almost every state it is now legal to drive 75mph, again with most likely a 10mph cushion. Cars are being built now that can handle these kinds of speeds routinely and safely. 15-20 years ago not many American cars were safe at 75-85mph. But now look at the new Hellcats, both of which were completely redesigned to run 200mph and will do so until the tank runs dry(13 minutes) lol. But most cars in America are now designed to run safely up to 120mph all day, the only limitations being the driver and the traffic. Now it's the drivers who need driving lessons for those speeds...
Great VDO Bjorn, showing how the Tesla (and you) smoothly deal with greater speeds like this. I grew up in the in the border areas between Denmark and Germany, so was nice to see the landscape again.
Christian Hartmann Thank you :) I don't really know German. Just a few basic words like "elektroauto", "geldautomat" and "danke schön". Of all the European countries I've been at, Germany is my favorite. Good food, good roads and not too expensive stuff :)
Nick Rs Yes, by now I have received thousands of messages about my driving in the left lane. I know I should have stayed more to the right. However, I didn't block anyone even though it wasn't correct behavior from me.
+Bjørn Nyland its totaly stupid to drive much more than 200kph on a 2 lane autobahn he did everything perfectly fine and can stay on the left lane cause he shouldnt be able to block somebody
Simply the best reviewer by a mile of everything about Tesla as usual. Enjoyed this like your other videos. Take care as many others have already said. I too thought the stopping distance wasn't enough on quite a few occasions during this video. No point risking serious harm for a video. I treat trauma victims often, nothing is worth risking yourself as it would affect your family too. I too used to drive with aggressive stopping distance in the past and occasionally now too. But once you have a child who you are responsible for then life takes a different perspective. Enjoy and take care and keep those awesome videos coming regularly. You must have inspired so many prospective buyers to buy one and Tesla should give you a free upgrade to the dual motor version. Waiting for the Model X myself.
veryannoyingname I kept a safe distance to the cars in front of me. I wonder if the camera angle and zoom made it look like it was closer than it actually was.
I would like to see battery temperature at the start of the "road" and when you entered at Denmark. Just to see that temperature differences (from an engineering standpoint). :)
I have a 2006 Chrysler 300 Hemi and my top speed(governed) is 128mph or about 206kph. I used to own a Jaguar XJ12L in the 1980s which had no governor and it ran almost 160mph or 257kph. I live near Ft. Worth Tx and the only road to run those speeds is the Interstate west of Weatherford Tx. It's fun to drive those speeds but very dangerous with all the traffic we have on that road now. The last time I was out there I touched 125 several times but had to back off very quickly. There is very little "lane discipline" on American highways like there is on the Autobahn. Oh well I'll be 72 years old later this year so maybe it's time for me to hang up my "boy racer" uniform lol. It is fun though to know that at my age I can run speeds like Paul Newman did...
Everett Cox Watching assorted videos posted by people driving on the Autobahn, I see no lane discipline at all. It's a myth. Perhaps in years/decades gone by; the drivers were more courteous about staying out of the 'fast lane', but no more. It is the same way here in the US. (I live in North Texas too and there are many roads, not just Interstate 20, where you can go really fast for long stretches.) To get back to the comment I was making; there are long stretches of interstate and state highways where people can drive as fast as they want, of course with the risk of tickets, but with radar and common sense it's gotten away with. It takes a bit of additional skill, other than just driving fast, to get away with it here. Anyway, it used to be more common to see slower vehicles staying out of the far left lane, because that's unofficially the 'fast lane' here in the US. Not so much anymore though. People everywhere are less courteous these days, it seems.
It is not a myth. I've driven on both US and German highways (Autobahn), and there is a huge difference. Slow movers stay in the right lane most of the time on the Autobahn, where as in the US people are randomly selecting a lane. The German way is way more effective and safe.
Did you use sports steering for this run? Will the car automatically change to sports steering if your drive above a certain speed? Great video as always!
very nice camera position ! you could also do some shots from beneath the car, maybe towards the motor for some sound clips, or the suspension in different height settings, a sound clip from inside the frunk !
danthemanzizle yeah at first I thought it was draining pretty fast but then I realized he was traveling a kilometer like every 20 seconds in which case it's doing great
+danthemanzizle the exected range decreases every 6 seconds for 1km @expected range around 250km, and the car is travelling at 200km/h, meaning the car will be out of battery within less than half an hour, and the actual remaining range is only less than 100km. Am I right?
+YSTech2010 It won't go on decreasing like that. In the end of the video, the car reached the German-Danish border, and because we're going slow, the range is going to shoot up pretty fast. I seriously doubt it'll go lower than 250 km.
Range anxiety still exists, having to jump from supercharger to supercharger will add hours to a trip. If you actually want to get somewhere you can't just keep stopping for 45 minute breaks every 2 hours.
Nice ride !! One question: why do you still have a gps in the left corner of the front window :-D ? I had the honour to test-ride a Tesla last week ... this car is insanely good !!!
texasschmexas I mounted the suction cup on the front panorama roof. It's not as tight as the front windshield. That's why it shook a bit at high speed. But the angle of view was perfect. I also shot it upside down because of the need to get the perfect angle. And in post-edit I rotated the video 180°.
Have you seen the mobile phones wireless charging thingies? It would be nice to build a road with the base built in to the road and the car support wireless charging. So at the supercharger you could just park over one and your car will begin charging. Version 2 could be the base is as long as the road so as to charge while driving if needed. Not sure if it will do the batteries any damage or whether it's possible, though.
Unless you always drive the backwoods of a state or in the inner cities especially northeast and midwest where weather beats the heck out of roads you can never appreciate the vastness of the whole U.S. highway system. We have roads that stretch over 2000 mi across several states. Just talk to some of those cross country truck drivers. The maintenance is astronomical and some areas suffer, but please don't go comparing 40 mi to our roads. The germans come here and are mesmerized. Oh, btw, unlimited speed limits here in the U.S. would thin down our population substantially with so many that can't drive slow let alone over 100 mi/hr.
What do you think about the interior cabin materials? I have heard there is a lot of harder materials and plastics and not many soft touch materials you find in normal luxury cars at that price rage.
As a potential car designer of the future, it delights me to see everyday people enjoying the advents of new automotive technologies. It's inspiring to me. Life feeds technology. Technology feeds life! :) #teslamotors #electriccar #Flyingcar
Bjørn, thanks for sharing. What is the reason you have mounted an extra GPS navigation device (TomTom if I'm not mistaken)? Isn't Tesla's own navigation up to par?
Nice video. Good to see that Model S 85 did well on the Autobahn for a longer time. But Tesla need to update the software to use "cruise control" over 175km/h. Cruising with 190 or is not a big deal, if the situation allows it.
Bjorn, when it is possible, you should always use the right lane - in germany, we are obliged to do that since there could always be someone faster. I'm sure you were aware of that, but I saw you stick to the left lane most of the time :D
Zdeněk Eisenhammer I had it mounted with a suction cup. When mounted, stabilisation will make it worse. So it was switched off. The problem is that the suction cup was mounted on the panorama roof. And the glass "floats" a bit compared to the front windshield. Post-stabilization won't help much since the shake frequency is so high that the picture is blurred.
Sitting in front of my monitor watching your video, coffee in hand and reaching for my seatbelt.! Great stuff. On a separate Tesla topic.... (maybe a premature question), what are your initial thoughts on the 'soon to be released' Tesla Powerwall? And would you consider installing one in your own home, that is if you already have solar power.
Eddie Lopez I don't need one because we live in an apartment. So we don't have solar power. And the charging in the garage cost a fixed 20 Euros per month. In Norway we also have very stable grid power. Therefore I can't have any good opinions about this. I think my brotha from anotha motha, ***** might be able to give some more useful inputs.
Grazie Bjorn. Yah, I will have a opinion video on the Powerwall coming soon, most likely end of this week. I will say now though, I think I was one of the first to get the name on the list. I was registered before Elon even finished referring people to the site :) CHEERS!
Most Germans do actually pay attention on the highway but there are enough idiots who don't look carefully into the rear mirrors. One is better prepaired for the worst case! The traffic wasn't too heavy for 200 km/h but you just need to get used a bit more to high speed driving... ;) Cheers from Berlin! p.s. I love your channel a lot!
How was the noise ? I mean if we compare to a diesel/bensin car of the same class, what dos it differ in terms of vibration(I noticed your camera shaking about 150km) and noise wise at 80km and 180km ?
alexisaddicted I felt that my old BMW 525d E61 had better sound proofing at high speed. But at all speeds, I'll hear the engine sound. And because it was a diesel, there was a constant low frequency humming that I think made me drowsy in the long run. Model S has frameless windows and is therefore not as quiet as framed windows.
I was surprised you had a few people pull out in front of you. I always thought the autobahn had very strict codes of conduct (when to pull out, how to handle slower/faster vehicles, etc) and if you didn't follow it you could be severely fined. Am I way off base or did they change that recently?
So, where is the proof that the car slowed down because the batteries overheated per article. Looks to me that the driver slowed down on purpose and on its own will because he approached the boarder to go to Denmark and it was not because of hot batteries.
Bjorn - love your videos! Getting my 90D in 3-5 weeks - so excited? My question for you...I see your radar detector up to the right of the rear view mirror. Is it true that placed elsewhere radar reception is limited due to the metallic film on the window to reduce sun rays? If so, how does your detector function in that location. Keep up the excellent work!
+Mark Cohen I bet you're excited! That's not a radar detector though. It's a chip for toll roads. But yes, it's only that area where the front windshield won't block the signals.
So the range drops more than 9km per minute. Electric motor isn't very efficient at high RPM. Having 1-2 extra gears may make it much more efficient at high speed.
Definitely. It should drop by 4. Electric motors have an inefficiency at 2/3 of maximum RPM, they drop to 60% from a 90% efficiency. Putting shifts though would increase weight and complexity and also the max torque at zero RPM makes it nearly impossible to change gear without breaking anything.
I once rode with a guy in a VW Polo, which was loaded with 4 people and he touched 195kmph on the autobahn. Most of the time he was doing 150+. Insane shit!
This was a fun and thrilling video to watch, but a bit difficult to listen with all the wind noise - wished you had noise cancelling feature on your video cam.
TheWiseOldChinaman Yes, it would have been better. However, the noise was actually a bit high at those speeds (compared to 100 km/h at the Danish border). So this gives the right impression of how it was inside the car.
Holy crap that's crazy. It speeds up so quickly and smoothly. And here am I am sometimes speeding to 140km/hr on the highway at midnight in my mom's mini van thinking I'm bad ass.

Thanks for your quick reply and info! You have already taught me so much about my almost here Model S.

Watching assorted videos posted by people driving on the Autobahn, I see no lane discipline at all.
The German way is way more effective and safe.
you should take left only for overtaking you know that people go over 200 there right?
I can't understand why there is a speed limit in any other country.
(on the autobahns of course)
Driving towards the windmills was beautiful
We could never have that here. There would be horrific crashes daily. I kept feeling like at any moment you were going to loose control. Nice video!
How come you have a TomTom? Isn't the Google maps any good?
The car uses 3G mobile signals, if you have no coverage you have no maps. Tomtom uses gps, directly from satellites
Jonathan Turner Well that's interesting to know. Thanks:-)
+ianrkav The Tesla nav still lacks a lot of "basic" satnav features that TomTom and others have.
Even though I don't speak German, I thoroughly enjoyed the German commentary.
did both of you bow at eachother ? 0:10 ? that's so class!
Great way to end the video with a close up of the most beautiful flag in the world :-)
Bjørn, great video. I live in the US but I've driven the Autobahn before. That is way to fast for me! Good job and keep those videos coming.
Cool ! Your few Deutschen Sätze ;)
Please more Videos while driving ;)
Everyone love this car!
Just wants me to hate it more!
Jean V no one blame you.
Do I love this car?
I hate it!
Did you use sports steering for this run? Will the car automatically change to sports steering if your drive above a certain speed?
Great video as always!
Brian Mok I use comfort steering. It doesn't change unless you change yourself.
Superb video ..keep them coming
very nice camera position ! you could also do some shots from beneath the car, maybe towards the motor for some sound clips, or the suspension in different height settings, a sound clip from inside the frunk !
12:11 - Was that an Arnold Schwarzenegger impression? À la "Get to the choppa?" hahaha
***** Yeah, that was Arnold. He's the boss!
Haha, brilliant!
This is great, Germany needs superchargers like Pearls on a string, Showing Model S of at this speed is what will sell these Cars go, go Bjørn
I expected the battery to drain like crazy but it actually held up surprisingly well, a tribute to the cars aerodynamics.
danthemanzizle yeah at first I thought it was draining pretty fast but then I realized he was traveling a kilometer like every 20 seconds in which case it's doing great
+danthemanzizle The Model S was made in a Aero Tunnel
+Ckc dillpickle no shit
+danthemanzizle the exected range decreases every 6 seconds for 1km @expected range around 250km, and the car is travelling at 200km/h, meaning the car will be out of battery within less than half an hour, and the actual remaining range is only less than 100km. Am I right?
+YSTech2010 It won't go on decreasing like that. In the end of the video, the car reached the German-Danish border, and because we're going slow, the range is going to shoot up pretty fast. I seriously doubt it'll go lower than 250 km.
Sure hope you checked your tire pressures before this adventure! How much wear is on your tires anyway?
Awesome video!
Tim
ScootOverMan Yes, I checked my tires. It was 48 psi. The tires last for about 30k km.
I bet that u were smiling during the whole video... Keep up the good work
Range anxiety still exists, having to jump from supercharger to supercharger will add hours to a trip. If you actually want to get somewhere you can't just keep stopping for 45 minute breaks every 2 hours.
Nice ride !! One question: why do you still have a gps in the left corner of the front window :-D ? I had the honour to test-ride a Tesla last week ... this car is insanely good !!!
Clone285051 Thanks for the feedback :) The Tesla navigation still lacks a lot of features that the TomTom has.
Bjørn Nyland how did you secure the camera so it didn't move in your backseat?
texasschmexas I mounted the suction cup on the front panorama roof. It's not as tight as the front windshield. That's why it shook a bit at high speed. But the angle of view was perfect. I also shot it upside down because of the need to get the perfect angle. And in post-edit I rotated the video 180°.
Bjørn Nyland that's awesome! Thanks for sharing.
Were you riding with the windows down? I am amazed by all the NOISE =s
Nice video anyway ;)
Did you ever went over 1890 km/h in a car? ANY car would sound just like that at those speed.
+Ramon Zarat I can safely say that I've never gone over 1890km/h in my car
What is the range at that highway speed?
3:18 made feel like I was watching back to the future.
Best channel on TH-cam! :D
I think this is how the future looks like, amazing range at those speeds.
The sound of this car...
is awesome! :D
Good acceleration even with decent speed.
The model S is made for it, it has mercedes running gear. Nice drive, thanks so much for sharing!
Perhaps to meet you in Norway in September...driving from Cologne to Molde...vacation and some fishing for 2 weeks. See you
What do you think about the interior cabin materials? I have heard there is a lot of harder materials and plastics and not many soft touch materials you find in normal luxury cars at that price rage.
As a potential car designer of the future, it delights me to see everyday people enjoying the advents of new automotive technologies. It's inspiring to me. Life feeds technology. Technology feeds life! :) #teslamotors #electriccar #Flyingcar
This car is so amazing, if i could get one i would be so happy
awesome video! you should do a facecam next time for the tesla grin :)
Bjørn, thanks for sharing. What is the reason you have mounted an extra GPS navigation device (TomTom if I'm not mistaken)? Isn't Tesla's own navigation up to par?
Google translate:
Wow! That was really cool! Driving at that speed in Brazil, it is not a good idea! :)
But is a car of my dreams!
Such a heavy car traveling that fast is probably louder than a lighter car at those speeds right?
Great video, Bjørn! Are you actually flooring the pedal here or is there still room left?
Henrik Mikael Kristensen There's still room left. If I floored it, I would stay constantly at 212 km/h.
Congrats Bjorn!
korvinsnerfable Thanks :)
Seems that the camera IS had some hard time during this recording :-) Perhaps some post-processing stabilization might help?
Zdeněk Eisenhammer I had it mounted with a suction cup. When mounted, stabilisation will make it worse. So it was switched off. The problem is that the suction cup was mounted on the panorama roof. And the glass "floats" a bit compared to the front windshield. Post-stabilization won't help much since the shake frequency is so high that the picture is blurred.
I love this Video! It's fantastic ! :D Btw, your german is pretty good actually ! :)
Greetings from Germany.
I was registered before Elon even finished referring people to the site :)
CHEERS!
Is it just the mic or is there a lot of wind noise for it being a relatively new and expensive luxury car?
***** Motor noise is almost non-existant. There are mostly wind noise at high speeds.
Why have the extra GPS in the corner there? Does the Tesla GPS/Google Maps not do too well in Germany?
How awesome! Sounds like an airplane.
Andrew Bow Tesla navigation lacks a lot of features still.
I was surprised you had a few people pull out in front of you.
I always thought the autobahn had very strict codes of conduct (when to pull out, how to handle slower/faster vehicles, etc) and if you didn't follow it you could be severely fined. Am I way off base or did they change that recently?
It's still like that.
loved your video, love the tesla's
mark marshall Thank you :)
So, how long could you keep that velocity will a full charged battery
So, where is the proof that the car slowed down because the batteries overheated per article.
Looks to me that the driver slowed down on purpose and on its own will because he approached the boarder to go to Denmark and it was not because of hot batteries.
tesla autopilot เราสามารถสั่งให้มันเข้าที่จอดรถเอง หรือให้รถมาหาเราได้ไหมครับ
Bjorn - love your videos! Getting my 90D in 3-5 weeks - so excited? My question for you...I see your radar detector up to the right of the rear view mirror. Is it true that placed elsewhere radar reception is limited due to the metallic film on the window to reduce sun rays? If so, how does your detector function in that location. Keep up the excellent work!
+Mark Cohen I bet you're excited! That's not a radar detector though. It's a chip for toll roads. But yes, it's only that area where the front windshield won't block the signals.
That looks like the sweet spot as far as fast goes.
Theoretically you can drive 163km at 200 km/h with a model S P85, right?
I have a question. Will this cat actually go 200 km in one hour? Or, do you need to reload its batteries after 20 minutes?
@Bjørn Nyland
How many kilometers can you drive with one charge?
+Djordjeblrs About 350-700 km.
+Bjørn Nyland 35min 200km/h. = 117km range
+Bjørn Nyland WOOOW 700km is just incredible... How did you do that?
I th-cam.com/video/Z5W4LJ5zL9g/w-d-xo.html
+Bjørn Nyland Longest ever was 503.3 miles

This was a fun and thrilling video to watch, but a bit difficult to listen with all the wind noise - wished you had noise cancelling feature on your video cam.
TheWiseOldChinaman Yes, it would have been better. However, the noise was actually a bit high at those speeds (compared to 100 km/h at the Danish border). So this gives the right impression of how it was inside the car.
What part of the German autobahn? Where on the google map?
If only I could cruise at 200 km/h here in the states :/ Our max speed limits here are around 120 km/h.
dalew101 You're lucky then. In Norway the max speed limit is only 110. And 99 % of the highways have only two lanes and 60-80 km/h speed limits.
I‘m German and i drive a murican car that can‘t even hit 200km/h 😂
If my brain is right today, that means that if you could drive the battery from full to zero, you would drive around 173 km in 51 minutes.
+Fabian Hansen
You've spelt "meens" incorrectly. Your brain is not right.
