I'm happy with my Pro 4X Frontier. It's been dependable, performs pretty well off road, and it never has once overheated on me out in the Arizona desert.
I e owned both including a 19 taco. The seating comfort in the frontier alone is enough to buy the frontier over the taco. Then the strong motor and transmission take the cake over the mushy taco that needs gears and a pedal commander. Taco looks better in and out but that is it.
I had a 14 model Pro-4x and absolutely loved it but it was too expensive with the amount of miles I was driving. Fast forward to today, I got a 19 model Pro-4x and couldn't be happier. I'm 6'3 and the seats are absolutely best in the class in my book. Great cruising truck.
I have owned two Frontiers. Bought first one used ( 2010 ) with 30k and put another 165k trouble free miles on it. Traded it in ( still ran and drove perfect ) on a new 2018 black midnight edition 4x4. Have almost 65k on it now. Oil changes, tire rotations and basic maintenance. Starts and runs like the day I bought it. By far the most underrated small truck on the planet. Recently I have started to see a lot more on the road here in the midwest. People are slowly figuring out the value, reliability and durability of these trucks. Side note: if you get a lot of snow, these Frontiers tear through it with locking rear differentials, strong 6 cyl. ( aprox. 265 HP ) and 5 speed auto trans. They are not gas misers ( i get 20 mpg mainly hiway) but all the positives more than makes up for it.
I'm pretty late for this but Thank You so much for this upload! I use to own a 2012 Tacoma and stepped down to a smaller vehicle and have been just fine for the past 3 years since moving from the west coast but due to recent snow storms in our area and the city's inability to keep the roads clear long enough for many of us to commute to work I have been considering a truck again. This review has helped me in considering the Frontier. I'm not a very big fan of all the high end tech trucks are coming with nowadays, I just want a reliable truck to help take me and my family from here to there without any anxiety attacks lol. My most recent trip during a really bad snow fall was the worst I had in all the years of living in our current location, enough to motivate the need for a new vehicle. Hopefully we'll be able to get a good deal on a new Frontier.
I have a 1998 with over 500k and a 2005 with over 300k. My bf has 2 older gen Tacos. All the trucks are running well but hands down the Frontier is more comfy and responds still with get up and go as well as like you said the steering and handling is still tight and feels great even with all the mileage they have racked up. Amazing trucks always will be my fav. The tacos do look good but I just test drove a brand new TRD pro and I personally didn’t feel it picked up like I was hoping. They are great trucks as well don’t get me wrong but in my personal opinion as driving both for years I will always choose Frontier.
Owner of a 2015 Frontier Pro 4x and a 2006 SE Pathfinder. My Pathy just reached 200k miles and runs just as good as the Frontier Pro4X. The most I did for the Pathy was the radiator fix to prevent PMOD but other than that just regular fluid changes and maintenance on both and never a problem. Nissan Trucks and SUVs fitted with the 4.0L V6 engine are just solid.
Something you can also do that the tacos cannot is swap a v8 Titan engine into the frontier and get a v8 upgrade that’s pretty much plug and play. You can also Titan swap the front and get 3” wider stance with a heavier duty front differential (with the proper gears) and run a better CV axle with the Titan front diff (the M205 front diff has bolt on CV, vs the standard cv that’s factory that the splines go into the differential) also, the frontier has 2 glove boxes, there’s a glove box above the other glove box, there’s a button you have to press to open it.
Got at 2017 Frontier Pro-4x in January this year, I’m 6’3 and there is some good room in it. It’s a solid truck with good off road/towing capability and the MPG isn’t the best but it’s worth it, also have mine straight piped and it sounds really good for a V6.
Just bought myself the exact same truck, same year, and I’m 6’4” and I can attest to your statement that there’s plenty of room. I can even sit in the crew cab just fine (although I wouldn’t want to for a long, long road trip).
Wyldman82 the only problem I have with it is the center consul is a little bit to low, I have to lean a bit more than I would like when I put my arm on it. But other than that it’s great.
I currently own a 2007 Frontier SE with the long bed. I love it but I hate the turn radius. 150k miles on it and still running like a champ as long as you maintain it properly.
Yep! Nissan Frontier truck is built on a Fully Boxed Steel Frame Chassis for Strength and Durability. Compare to the Ford's BS crap Aluminum alloy. Renault was the killing of Nissan, that was when they went to the JATCO CVT the worst transmission in the world, for what $60-$70 savings. Nissan knows their CVT will fail but as long as it makes it through the warranty period that’s all upper level management is concerned with per two Nissan engineers at a local softball game here in TN.
C frame in the rear for flex. It was designed that way for off road purposes. Also the tacoma has a lot more articulation. I've owned both at the same time and don't see why the frame makes it a better truck.
Good review, definitely considering this vs Taco. You should raise that headrest though to protect you from a c-spine injury if you ever, heaven forbid, get in an accident.

@@gearrunner Have you seen or heard about the updates on the new 2020 model? It has an all new powertrain but same body style. A 3.5L V6 that is paired with the Titan's 9 speed automatic transmission.
Own a 22 P4X, awesome truck!! Reminds me of my 02 Xterra, just more refined. Definitely better suspension and more up to date looks and tech. Still a great value compared to a taco imho 😎👍
my dad had a 86 300z and after 20+ years of abuse the water pump was the only thing to go bad. it rusted out but the engine and trans were still ready for more abuse. newer cvt cars i have zero clue about.
Frontier is much better for room but the biggest difference is the low-end torque versus the Tacoma. It ain't even a comparison. The 3rd gen Tacoma is an absolute dog. I swear it's like they put the powertrain of a Camry in that thing. I had a 1991 Pickup with the 22R 4 cylinder and it pulled harder than the new Tacoma.
Gear Runner, Yes it is!!! Nissan Frontier is better, and far better than Toyota Tacoma! I have a lot of proof! In my experience my truck cannot talk because machines don't talk, but however their actions are much more louder than words, I have a lot of proof. Nissan Frontier may not be the best midsize truck that have a higher Resale Value like what Toyota Tacoma owners brags about. But hell Nissan Frontier is a legendary Frontliner. A pickup truck that will be kept for life not to Resale it. It's got tons of Power, HP is descent but it's got the most leading class in Torque. And Torque is what keeps your truck moving forward. From point A to Point B. No BS. Nissan Frontier is so Simple, outdated of what stupid and idiot people tends to call it, but I call it a Tool! A tool that always and Everytime gets the job done! With no Hustle or time wasted. while the Toyota Tacoma is just only for a pleasure, a Toy from a child's toy box. And when it comes between the Tools and a Toy there a lot of significant differences.
I never cared for the looks of Nissans but that being said I owned a Murono and both my kids cut their teeth on Altimas that just kept going and going. And that’s teenage driving!
The new engine looks very similar to the VQ40. Spark plugs look like they’ll be a pain to change under the intake side just like the VQ40. A new body will come in 2021. I imagine Nissan is testing the engine in the old body.
I live in Texas and we have our own language but dear lord....LOL I'm a Toyota guy and owned an '11 Tacoma and a '17 Tacoma. My dad has owned 3 Frontiers and he loves them and is super excited to see the next gen. I have plenty of gripes about my 17 which I ended up selling it. They are huge in the overlanding community but have no low end grunt. Every slight incline on the highway and they downshift. The Frontier has much better low end torque. I actually enjoy driving it. They shift NORMAL. The Tacomas are notorious for this shifting gear hunting issues. Tacomas do last forever, but they have their quirks.
Got a 18 Pro4X and really like it. Wish these were 4W Auto, my only gripe. Throw some decent AT-W or snows on and winters are grin inducing. Love the Taco Off Rd and TRD. Wish we had same aftermarket options.
I have a Datsun 280 zx that I restored. As stock as I could make it and it is a good car. The only issue I have with it is an a/c aftermarket part that breaks a month after install. Otherwise runs great. Edit; I think auto correct changed zx to ax.
Gear Runner yeah according to my dad, a lot of them were rusting in the dealership, so I lucked out. The only bad rust was at the roof where the windshield molding touched and in the driver side wheel well where the master cylinder leaked.
I had 3 Nissan hardbody trucks from 88-95. Put well over 100K on all 3 of them. Great trucks! The modern frontier is a decent truck, but nowhere as good of quality as the Tacoma. Just my opinion. My avg MPG in the Nissan V6 was 15. Not awesome.
Proud owner of a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder with a five-speed manual transmission. I just hope Nissan will still offer manual transmissions in the future. If not I will be looking towards a Bronco or Jeep. Hopefully not a cheap because everybody drives them and they are way overpriced.
Considering how much you like the Frontiers, have you given a look at the new 2022 Frontiers to be available in August? If so, what do you think of the new look? Just curious 🤔
I have a 2017 frontier the Taco is too small interior and as a guy that changes his own oil the taco is nightmare. Unfortunately the new Frontier has a DIRECT INJECTION which all DI motors the valves carbon up so unless something changes I’ll run the wheels off my 2017 frontier
The BIGGEST downfall to the Frontier is its looks, that’s why the Tacoma’s are selling like crazy, the Frontier just doesn’t have that “I’m tough” look.
Honestly you look at the price point of the two and I think you’re getting a way better value with the frontier, and the frontiers can take a shit load of abuse
This couldn't be further away from the truth. You got way more for your money in the tacoma at the time. Like way more, by a lot. For not much more money.
Overall I agree. I have an 05 Pathfinder (under appreciated overland vehicle). But toyota has more bells and whistles. And as and an off roader I feel the gearing and axles are stouter on the taco.
I was looking at a 2010 frontier LE 4x4 with 31k miles. My only concern is I have read 2005-2010 Frontiers have issues with coolant leaking from the radiator into the transmission. Do you know if these issues are isolated and overblown or should I be concerned buying that frontier?
Only issue for automatics. Not all 2010's have the defective radiator, no it is not overblown but it can be prevented with either a by-pass or radiator replacement. I was lied to with my 2005, guy did the bypass, less than a year after I bought it the tranny blew. The tranny shop figured that he caught the SMOD very early, did a complete tranny flush (if you catch it quick enough it can last 500 to 20000 miles before blowing up), then did the by-pass and sold it. Complete tranny rebuild cost me $5k here in Canada
An off subject question, why did Toyota only use rock warrior rims for only those truck's, im looking for a set an think those were some of best rims that came on any truck stock . I wish they would do a 2021 rock warrior edition.
Tacoma has better articulation, smaller turn radius, easier to fit 35s from what I’ve read online. Frontiers are cheaper used, new they’re not that much cheaper if you plan to keep it 20 years anyways. But having more options in aftermarket for Tacoma’s can be a big reason to go that way if you want to build it. If you just want a truck to drive and do light off-roading or do more towing and hauling them yea frontier. Just depends what you plan to use it for. Also consider Nissan still doesn’t offer Apple car play which to me is a deal breaker. It allows me to dial into meetings and car companies suck at writing entertainment system software. I’m also not too tall so I get that but since I’m shorter the lower roof means I can slap tires lift and maybe a roof rack on and still fit in a standard apartment garage. Lots to consider I thought about a frontier but couldn’t buy a truck with 140k miles on it for $14k. Rather spend the money and get something I know is going to be taken care of right from day 1
I think the 2021 frontier could be better than the Tacoma in any config. Release should be any day on the new Frontier. 2022 Nismo Frontier awesome looking.
Have a 2019 frontier pro4x i love it Had a hardbody that ran forever. My Toyotas were a 95 excab trd offroad drove till 255000 also had a limited 94 4 runner it had problems when i bought it so only had a year r so and a 99 tacoma ex cab 5 speed trd off road sold with 180000. So either i believe is a good truck but imo Nissan is built better and priced way better. I hate all the new tech shit on tacomas its the reason i got my 19 pro4x not the trd pro i was looking at that and the 15000ish price difference.
Nissan got looks but Toyota has quality imo. If you want a Toyota with power and quality go with 4.7 v8 tundra . But I got yo say that frontier looks nice.
It's as simple as this...the tacoma also a wonderful truck has had to up the ante, almost yearly and offer a beefier more aggressive look, but that's all it really is, I'd still stick to my frontier tho
My heavily customized 2012 Frontier gets more looks than a Ford Raptor ha ha. But, I think the new Frontier is fugly and I don't like the Titan either as I feel these new trucks are too boxy and all copy eachother. A bit of curves added make the truck look more appealing.
Well Mr.Gearunner......I just purchased a fully loaded 2020 TRD sport Tacoma. This is my third tacoma and my wife owns a 4runner....you couldn’t convince me or pay me to give up the Tacoma for any other midsize truck. The frontier is a great truck, but in my opinion, still not on the level as the Tacoma in reliability....for me reliability means more than anything else....just my opinion
Daniel Dehay I do think that the Tacoma is a great truck. I also think the Frontier is as well. I don’t know which is better quality wise. I’ve owned several Frontiers with well over 100k miles with no issues at all. This had over 200k.
Gear Runner I get you....that was just my opinion. I have always thought the frontier was a great truck, but for me, it wasn’t better than the taco. Again just my opinion. And maybe it’s because my first truck was a 2010 TRD Off Road tacoma. Maybe that’s why I think the way I do. Either way, great video
2nd gen Tacoma with 4.0L and 5 spd transmission was a good truck. 3.5L Taco with 6 spd is a gutless snail that constantly hunts for gears and has to be revved to redline to get any performance.
I’ve had 2 Frontiers and a new Tacoma now, I wouldn’t trade the Toyota for anything. It’s out together a lot tighter, way more comfortable, and I got my manual. I commute 125 miles a day and get 22-25 mpg. Frontier was only getting 18.5 at best. My opinion only, I’m done buying Nissans.
Toyota Tacoma= C Channel cheap frame, Rear drum brakes, no power and toyota tax/resale. NIssan Frontier= Titan frame fully boxed, rear disc brakes, power, dana 44 rear axle, dana front axles, spicer transfer case and the ability to titan swap suspension and v8 engine.
Engineered better? What about the Tacoma SMOD and peeling paint? Exact same inferior design flaw with the Frontier. What about excessive frame rust on Tacoma's and 4runners? I've taken my Frontier to the beach every weekend for the past 8 years. No frame rust. What about the faulty head gaskets on early 2nd gen Tacomas and 4runners? What about the faulty automatic transmissions, and sticky gas pedal issues? It seems Tacoma has vibration issues as well. Never experienced those issues with my early model 2nd gen Frontier.
Nissan trucks and Nissan cars are quite different. The trucks appear to be much better quality than the cars especially since Renault merged with Nissan twenty years ago. That's where the bad image and press are coming from.
Frontiers are considered a major exception to the problems other Nissan models have had. They are considered a very reliable truck.
They definitely are a reliable truck for sure
I dont even need to finish this video. It's at least equal, but cheaper. So better.

my dad had a 86 300z and after 20+ years of abuse the water pump was the only thing to go bad. it rusted out but the engine and trans were still ready for more abuse. newer cvt cars i have zero clue about.
@@thebigguy7261 He's not talking about older nissans. Newer ones are less reliable/ poorer quality.
Good luck almost seating on floor if that doesn't bother you much.
Between the Tacoma and Frontier, which one gets the better fuel economy? Or are they about the same?
Fritty 99 I’ve always had very good luck with Nissan vehicles. I’ve owned more of those than any other brand.
How long do Frontiers last? I have an 99' 4runner with 265k miles. Wanna get an Frontier next when I have to replace my 4runner
Good value for the money, especially used / low mile
Same features, same durability, and both can go to the same places but one costs 30 percent more.
Nissan frontier it’s good, I got a 1998 king cab whit 387,000 milles in it’s fire🔥
I may be picking up a 2015 sv 4x4 this week
They put a new engine and a new transmission in the 2020, but kept the same body.
Aleks Lajzer Yep and new engines make me nervous
The Big Empty _ I agree
Got a 18 Pro4X and really like it. Wish these were 4W Auto, my only gripe. Throw some decent AT-W or snows on and winters are grin inducing. Love the Taco Off Rd and TRD. Wish we had same aftermarket options.
Z1 offroad, old man emu, arb. Plenty of offroad support for the frontier. Plus nismo is dropping a bunch of offroad gear. Hope that helps
Nice looking truck
1998 Frontier - 4cyl and 5sp 4x4. 150k+. One tough truck. (First year made, V6 wasn't an option).
I have a Datsun 280 zx that I restored. As stock as I could make it and it is a good car. The only issue I have with it is an a/c aftermarket part that breaks a month after install. Otherwise runs great. Edit; I think auto correct changed zx to ax.
WalterPuppet I really like those cars. You never really see them anymore.
Gear Runner yeah according to my dad, a lot of them were rusting in the dealership, so I lucked out. The only bad rust was at the roof where the windshield molding touched and in the driver side wheel well where the master cylinder leaked.
WalterPuppet That does sound like you found a good car to start with
voice for radio, im curious did u get the new models? 2022 frontier pro 4x?
All I can say is Nissan never had a buy back program for their trucks folding in half!
if you don’t mind, can you tell me what lug nuts you have on because i have the same set rims and i’m in need of some new lugs
303MoTo Yea I think all midsize trucks get pretty bad mpg overall
Unfortunately the new Frontier has a DIRECT INJECTION which all DI motors the valves carbon up so unless something changes
I’ll run the wheels off my 2017 frontier
17 frontier gang :)
The BIGGEST downfall to the Frontier is its looks, that’s why the Tacoma’s are selling like crazy, the Frontier just doesn’t have that “I’m tough” look.
Is the older 4.0 liter with 5 speed or new 3.8 with 9 speed Frontier better?
lol as soon as you said the check engine light was on I said o2 sensor hahaha. my dad had an 05 same issue.
Honestly you look at the price point of the two and I think you’re getting a way better value with the frontier, and the frontiers can take a shit load of abuse
This couldn't be further away from the truth. You got way more for your money in the tacoma at the time. Like way more, by a lot. For not much more money.
@@alexgarcia3900 that’s why new tacomas are ranging between 40 to 60 grand, even the used ones are upwards of 35 😂
I like the looks of that truck. How much of a lift does it have? I'm guessing a 2" spacer with a 2" body lift.
Agreed
Overall I agree. I have an 05 Pathfinder (under appreciated overland vehicle). But toyota has more bells and whistles. And as and an off roader I feel the gearing and axles are stouter on the taco.
I have both I like the room in the frontier and think it's faster only downside to Nissan is depreciation
English viking 82% Just a special rim for a special edition truck
Rather spend the money and get something I know is going to be taken care of right from day 1
Can you ask your friend where he got those headlights ! Just bought an 08 Nismo Truck
I can see but I believe he said they were in it when he bought the truck
I think the 2021 frontier could be better than the Tacoma in any config. Release should be any day on the new Frontier. 2022 Nismo Frontier awesome looking.
Have a 2019 frontier pro4x i love it
Had a hardbody that ran forever.
Most foreigners believe Americans sound like this fella lol
😂😂
Is the SV model frontier frame built the same as the pro vx
My heavily customized 2012 Frontier gets more looks than a Ford Raptor ha ha. But, I think the new Frontier is fugly and I don't like the Titan either as I feel these new trucks are too boxy and all copy eachother. A bit of curves added make the truck look more appealing.
I used to think the reliability of Nissan's unequaled! Til I owned one one with a bad intake manifold gasket!!
Great truck except for all the pinball lights
Yes.
a frontier came up for sale around here. 2012 87k 15 grand. 6 spd manual
Do you know what lift and wheel/tire set he’s running?
What year was that Nissan?
Those British guys I can't member the show picked nissan truck over Toyota, put tire sprayer on it an drive up a 🌋, ggz 10 year ago
The Taco impresses the ladies more.
Resale value: FJ Cruiser, Tacoma, then Jeeps.
Toyota Tacoma= C Channel cheap frame, Rear drum brakes, no power and toyota tax/resale.
NIssan Frontier= Titan frame fully boxed, rear disc brakes, power, dana 44 rear axle, dana front axles, spicer transfer case and the ability to titan swap suspension and v8 engine.
I agree! 👍👍👍👍👍
Fact
Owned both. Tacoma’s are more reliable and engineered better. Both great trucks. Own a Tacoma currently and prefer Toyota over the Nissan
3 inch left ?? Tire size ?
I did a completely different review on the tires. Here’s the link to that video. th-cam.com/video/_b8fCOSX0Ic/w-d-xo.html
May I ask how tall you are?
Had a 05 frontier and nothing but troubles, rather spend more an get the legendary tacoma, toyota forever
If you purchased a Tacoma in the same year, I guarantee you will run into similar problems. All early models have their fair share of flaws.
Nissan trucks and Nissan cars are quite different. The trucks appear to be much better quality than the cars especially since Renault merged with Nissan twenty years ago. That's where the bad image and press are coming from.
