The entire story was about how the Fox cinematic universe was seizing existence, and the higher power (Disney) was selecting certain superheroes to go to another timeline (MCU). I think the brilliance of the film is how it takes unfulfilled ideas and shows us how it both works and doesn’t work. Channing Tatum as Gambit walked in a complete comic accurate outfit that didn’t seem to fit him all that well. And it makes sense. From his look, dialogue and even how he fights, Tatum gives 110% and the joke is that he’s sort of a 50/50 Gambit.
On Wolverine’s cowl, it makes sense from a character standpoint. He notes that he was always hesitant to put on the suit. After the death of the X-Men, he never takes it off but never really dons his role as the Wolverine until the third act. There’s even the joke that on his big sacrifice, his shirt explodes exposing rolling muscles yet somehow the mask stays on.
I think the greatest strengths of the film are the cameos, the lead’s performance and the movie’s usage of older Fox Marvel properties. The greatest weakness is that the film dates itself extremely and was made with this particular frame of time of superhero movies in mind.
It makes sense that they marketed the film so much and put behind it so much cross promotion. They want audiences in theaters watching it while it has its maximum effect and full bite.

I don't feel like people are talking about the different versions of Wolverine enough. The Hulk vs classic brown suit Wolverine scene was so good. I do feel like the movie slowed down going into the last act and you're right - the Cassandra villain was too much of a new character I think and took time away from grounding the story more. Also, would have loved more Fox cameos because I thought they pulled them off pretty well. Lastly, I think just one quick snapshot of live action blue and gold x-men during a flashback scene about Wolverine's world would have been sooo satisfying. Imagine seeing the original x-men cast in blue and gold.

What made Vanessa break up with him?! How do you go from loving a person unconditionally and wanting to have their child... to breaking up with them because of some weird vague idea of not believing in anything more than himself, or whatever the hell they said. The dude has literally done nothing but sacrifice himself for the greater good and to help victimized people. What is she talking about? It's like she's a totally different person.
And that sucks because even women who have acted in the MCU have criticized them for giving so many women the same personality. Vanessa had a legitimately fun and unique personality. And now that's gone.

As much as I really like the film I couldn't give it a 10/10 but wasn't exactly sure why. But thank you for explaining what I felt was missing. Having Wade and Vanessa break up off screen was a bit jarring after rewatching Deadpool 1 & 2. I would've liked to see what happened in "Worst" Wolverine's universe. I hate what they did to the Vanessa character. The love between she and Wade has always been the heart of his story. It's the one thing that was never made into a joke. She went from wanting to have his child to breaking up with him because he "didnt put anything above himself"? The guy literally sacrificed himself at the end of the last film for a troubled teenager just to show him that he is loved.
Vanessa went from being a wild, fun, playful, good hearted and loving person to the generic Marvel woman. What was up with her taking a jab at him when she said "Well he hasn't gotten me shot yet" when she told him she was dating someone? Vanessa was almost killed in the first film, then saw what Wade looks like, and still loved him unconditionally. She even wanted to have his child in the last film. But now he... doesn't care about anything above himself? This is the guy who wouldnt even accept money from a girl in part one when he took care of her stalker.
This isn't the same person from the first two films. And it's very frustrating because she was a genuinely lovable character.
Btw, notice they mentioned her promotion at work to let us all know she is no longer a stripper. Because a good hearted and likable female character could never be a stripper to Disney, I guess.

Deadpool jumping back into Earth-616 in the future feels like it would be undoing his arc in this movie-- basically choosing his original crew over the MCU.
Also, since "Logan" took place in the future, isn't there still a Wolverine walking around in the universe where Wade and Logan live together? Do they just have to make sure they never run into each other?

I think he can still go to Earth-616 but just to help out, not to actually live there long-term.

@@SplatterInker That's an interesting point that I didn't consider. Technically, there's even the possibility of Deadpool-616 being played by somebody else. Mind you, I can't think of anybody else who *could* top Ryan Reynolds, but there's a chance he might want to retire. He's not as old as Hugh, but he ain't getting any younger, and he might feel like he's done everything he can with the character (I'd be *surprised* if he felt that way, since he fought for playing Deadpool for so long, but you never know).

Thank you Dan! I appreciate your ability to acknowledge the movie's highs (action, humor, cameos) while also acknowledging its lows (weak story, lack of impact on the MCU), but still enjoying it for the achievement and entertainment it is. It's why I love your reviews in every universe ;)

    The in-jokes were incredible!
    - Deadpool pointing out, in which episode of "Loki" Alioth first appeared in.
    - Elektra talking about the death of Daredevil and going "It's fine." - obviously meaning Ben Affleck, whom she later married and divorced.😅
    - Matthew McConaughey as Cowboypool - I mean, obviously.
    - The deliberately terrible costume they gave Channing Tatum to fit the Fox era that never was 😅😅
    - Ryan Reynolds' wife and kids playing Deadpool variants.
    - "There's only one Blade." and the shot of Deadpool looking right at the camera 😂
God, that was so much fun!

One of the reasons for the soft Blade reaction may have been that a lot of spoilers for this movie got out pretty early. I had all but one cameo spoiled in one way or another in the days before seeing it, despite having muted some accounts already and limiting exposure to some other channels as well.

I thought it was a solid 7.5 out of 10. Dead pool of course was the star. However this multiverse saga storyline is clearly hurting the MCU more than it’s helping it. Yes, the cameos from the older fox characters from past franchises was cool fan service. The MCU super fans will love that , But it’s getting to the point where the timelines are getting confusing to where it’s affecting the final product of the scripts/movie. It’s clear that the script writers are having a hard time juggling with it. The movies and TV shows should have never been interconnected in my opinion. I shouldn’t have to go into this movie having prerequisite knowledge of the TV shows! That’s coming from someone who has seen the TV shows. Ryan Reynolds again stole the show. Hugh jackman a close second . Emma corrin was great as Cassandra nova but the writing for her character was very weak. I’m afraid another villian with massive potential wasted. Her motivations were very weak. But overall a good and very funny movie.

I’ve been trying to figure out why I felt a lot less heart in this than the other Deadpool films and I think it’s those points u brought about the lack of fleshing out those DP and Logan stories in this film. But yes cameos were really fun and made for a nice love letter to the FOX era.
Would love to see you review the small film Fresh Kills from Jennifer Esposito. Def deserves some more love and eyes on it😊

I loved this movie because it was driven by its characters more than its story. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman absolutely killed it for me and Dan's right, the exposition was a little clunky at times, BUT I bought it because those two emote so well and they sell their pain to me.
Ryan Reynolds made that initial scene with Happy Hogan work for me because you could tell it in his voice and see it in his face and actions just how much Deadpool wanted to be more than, "The Merc with the Mouth." I also liked how when Happy was talking about the Avengers in that scene we get the shots of Tony's arc reactor and Steve's shield. Just those shots impressed upon me the weight of their legacy and I loved how Happy legitimately gave Wade a good job interview.
Even though we never get to see why this Wolverine is, "the worst," I also still bought in because Hugh Jackman emotes so well. He was basically (to use an anime term) being a tsundere about how much being an X-Man meant to him and he carried the weight of failure on him as well as he did in Logan.
It was understated but I love how Logan seeing Deadpool care so much about his family, his entire world, is ultimately the thing that brings him around. Deadpool is owning up to and fighting with all he has to save the people he cares about, something this Logan wishes he had the strength to do in his own timeline.
