Use extended chord voicings, play weirdly timed phrases/syncopation and turn them around so they can fit into 4/4 time, learn some key modulation, advance your technique repertoire (tapping, hammer ons, wide interval slides), get familiar with this playing style as it involves a lot of open strings, and of course lots of practice. I'm sure I'm missing other key characteristics and I mostly covered guitar stuff but those are some of the things that stick out to me.
I disagree. The learning curves are completely different, in that guitar is a physical skill, something that just requires practice, where recording/mixing is a mental/intuitive skill. You need some basic knowlege, and the rest is all trial and error. I've invested about the same amount of time into each, and I can record and mix an album, but I can't play what Jake just did.
What I experience is the opposite of that. When I see what a guitarist is doing it becomes much easier to me. It's like watching how a magic trick is done.
His playing is so precise. Every note is on time, has the right sound, right intensity and volume, very metronomic. Every band need one of these guitarists
Theory: Jake never grew a beard. He's been shaving Nolly's head every night while he sleeps for the past few years, making him think he's bald. He's finally collected enough hair to make a beard.
I think both him and mark are under appreciated. Just look at a lot of their most popular songs. Either written by one of them or features a solo by one of them
Ever since I know the band Jake and Mark always caught my eye for some reason. Misha is a really impressive musician, no doubt, but there's something about those 2 guys that really makes me appreciate their playing a lot.
I'd love to see playthrough's with all 3 guitar parts on them.. The thing that separates Periphery from other bands IMO is how well you guys space your playing. It's incredible how well 3 guitars can work together.
@@ryancozzolino7832 ryan. Just because you make mistakes doesn't mean you're a god. There's only one god and he's somewhere on youtube. See if you can find him.
Confirmed, Jake is super cool and funny. Also yes to the apparent lack of emotion. It's the beard though. When it reaches that level, the only emotion you truly feel is beard.
+cyssou He is completely underrated compared to Misha and Mark. No one really mentions Jake much at all when talking about Periphery, that's what's sad about it.
I want to see Spencer's vocal playthrough too pleaseeee! His voice has been really incredible in this new record as well as on some of the live footages!
I love this song so much. IMO it's one of the best you guys have ever written. This is a great playthrough too. Nothing too flashy, just focusing on the notes. Great job, Jake!
i am utterly impressed, Jake you pulled through, I've been anticipating when you would release your play-through. fantastic job i am so proud of you brother!
God damn, Jake is such a clean player. Flatline was definitely my favorite song off the album, so I was really looking forward to this playthrough and man, Jake does not disappoint.
It gives me aids when people like Dave Mustain say that metal has gone to shit and its all just drop tunnings and no solos when actually you have bands like periphery that are so technically proficient it is mind blowing .
This is my favorite song from the album! So happy to see them putting up play-throughs. Be interesting to see The Price is Wrong or Habitual Line Stepper too.
i take it jake was the one who wrote a part of this song? the other tracks you guys have done playthroughs for the main contributor to the song has been the one performing the playthrough, e.g mark wrote the riff for the way the news goes, nolly wrote the prayer position riff.
this is the best looking custom guitar from the periphery dudes.. mark psr is good looking but not my cup of tea, misha's jackson is beautiful.. but this reversed headstock, black satin gold hardware, titan loaded ibanez is absolutely stunning
Can someone please tell me what time signature the middle section is that starts at 3:21? I'm counting either 5/5/4/5 or 5/5/5/4 (ps I know what I wrote down isn't a time signature, I'm trying to explain how I count it). This part is so freakin cool and confusing.
It just occurred to me that he has a picture of Tycho, his dog, on his phone at 00:12. I've seen this video literally a thousand times. I never noticed that.
I can`t comprehend how these guys write music, at all.
By ear. None of them are trained or well versed in music theory past the basics. They just play what sounds and feels good to them.
MrMrJacobzon pretty simple, really.
@@RobertoReyesChHC I would add that sometimes keep things a little bit abstract.
Juan Hernandez jake Bowen is one of JP brothers so he kinda is ahead of the rest
Songs always seem so much more intricate when you can see what the guitarist is playing.
what's sad is that its not even half as hard as mixing and recording
I disagree. The learning curves are completely different, in that guitar is a physical skill, something that just requires practice, where recording/mixing is a mental/intuitive skill. All concluded with importance of practice

Damn this is so close to the original! Did you learn this by ear?! Sick man
Pretty sure the band gave him the tabs, sounds spot on actually :O
+o3ix I'm pretty sure he learned this song from the producer pack.
I think it was pretty original too thanks
lol
nah man, this guy's a nut, terrible cover
Jake's technique is so fucking flawless. I find it hard to imagine him ever needing a second take.
Theory: Jake never grew a beard. He's been shaving Nolly's head every night while he sleeps for the past few years, making him think he's bald. He's finally collected enough hair to make a beard.
MarkToast This made me lol really hard XD
Holy fuck I am DECEASED 5/7 best periphermeme

Jake bowen and his 7 strings Of wonder! 😍👈
kbleskate throwback
that's an 8 string
Jamison Grandy thats a 7 string
Jamison Grandy it's a 7 string

One of the Most underrated and under appreciated guitarists around, sick play through brother!
More new album playthroughs pleasee
I think both him and mark are under appreciated. Just look at a lot of their most popular songs. Either written by one of them or features a solo by one of them
Droid96 I 100% agree man!
Ever since I know the band Jake and Mark always caught my eye for some reason. Misha is a really impressive musician, no doubt, but there's something about those 2 guys that really makes me appreciate their playing a lot.
thats cause mark's way fucking over rated

Jake Bowen the beautiful man, the legend, this won't ever get old
Look, up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Trent Reznor, NO! It's Jake Bowen and his seven strings of wonder!
the Icarus lives video XD
Garrett Thompson Rrrrrrragtime dandies!
Read in the voice lol
There is no Slowin' the Bowen
But what if I poured sticky sticky syrup all over his body.
Bowen laughs at your laws of physics
:(
I heard Jake is an expert in Gravity and Friction
That's what his girlfriend says too!
I kid, I love this guy
Best cover of this song I’ve seen to this day!
That is the most beautiful & elegant guitar ive ever seen!
pretty sure that's his signature model
yup, it's JBM-100
Igor Dranichnikov isn't the Jbm-100 a 6 string?
Check out the Music Man Majesty
Idk I find Private Stock PRSes to be much more elegant and beautiful (and expensive)... (not saying that this guitar isn't beautiful)
Even uses the same guitar as Jake, such a fanboy.
The cosplay and cover is spot-on
Big Bad Buzz I bet this poser even has the same parents as Jake.
And his beard, he copied even Jake's beard!
I'll bet he'll even claim that John Petrucci is his uncle too.
I think he even copied his DNA...what a poser.
4:48 when you miss the pickup switch on the first strum

@@ryancozzolino7832 ah it sounded a lot like you were. My bad. But still the one god that exists is on youtube.
Please do Habitual Line-Stepper!
With everyone, not just a single part
I want to see that fret work in real time.
habitual = habis kentu mual
My 7 came in two days ago, and I immediately started learning this song
Is it just me or, is Jake the most intimidating member in the band; He seems quiet, except towards his dog lol; and when he rages at video games 😂
Or maybe it's the Petrucci-level beard.
Skylark maybe it runs in the family
Kyle Kean he is incredibly sweet in person!! He's like a teddy bear :3
Confirmed, Jake is super cool and funny. Also yes to the apparent lack of emotion. It's the beard though. When it reaches that level, the only emotion you truly feel is beard.
Maybe it's Maybelline
Have you ever seen such melodic chords implemented so beautifully into a heavy metal song?
Is his 12th fret a crescent moon or his beard?
Crescent moon
Bow ...en ;)
EthanMayFilms Titan is saturn's largest moon
lmao can't see anything else now haha
EthanMayFilms it's a fingernail :p
Jake, man. You're so underrated. Amazing stuff!
Ashley Cook i think he ´s not, his amazing work with periphery and crazy electronics stuff in solo show us how amazing is his talent
+cyssou He is completely underrated compared to Misha and Mark. No one really mentions Jake much at all when talking about Periphery, that's what's sad about it.
who underrates him? I feel like all of the periphery guitar players are largely regarded as fantastic and rightly so
I love these videos. Great to see exactly how it is played by the player.
I want to see Spencer's vocal playthrough too pleaseeee! His voice has been really incredible in this new record as well as on some of the live footages!
My favorite song on this album. Close behind is Marigold, The Way the News Goes, and Habitual Line-Stepper.
I'm watching this for like the 20th time since this was originally uploaded and just now realize it has been 7 years! Life comes at you fast.
5:31 is where my skill level is exactly.

I hope it improved since you posted this comment! :)
My dream:
Mark's 6 string PRS
Misha's 7 string Jackson
Jake's 8 String Ibanez
Ready for dj0nt
more like ready for bankruptcy :D
Chrystian Pinheiro I'll settle for the 7 string matte orange Misha Jackson. That thing looks insane
Chrystian Pinheiro Jake has an 8 string like this one?
Garret, actually he dont... damn i really thought that he had...
***** Great
This is simultaneously extremely demoralizing and incredibly inspiring
I’ve been playing guitar for 15 years and this looks impossible for me!! Kudos on seriously under appreciated skills!!

I love all 3 Periphery guitarists, but Jake is my favorite. Such a clean/tasteful player.
Dude Jake your technique is impeccable

Always a treat seeing Jake's chops. Take notes dudes, this is what proper technique looks like!
Love the main riff, sounds very exotic, the rithm and the snare line are just amazing
It is sooo hypnotizing watching him play those badass riffs. Jake FTW!
oh man I wanna hear some more stuff from you and Spencer. you two are so good
(Solo stuff like this)
this is so far my fav song off the album
Nice cover bro. Like the original one.
Met this guy in Grand Rapids a while ago. I love how he's so mild mannered and just plays the stuff that works. Great work.
this is one of my favorite Periphery songs so far.
Damn, I'm absolutely amazed! I just finished watching playthrough's from the other two guys and they're all equally amazing
I remember seeing a video of the main riff on Jake's Instagram last year. I was super stoked to hear it on the album
It gives me aids when people like Dave Mustain say that metal has gone to shit and its all just drop tunnings and no solos when actually you have bands like periphery that are so technically proficient it is mind blowing .

Either that or just trying to even out the number of appearances. Spencer vocal demo next?
yeah i guess so, but if we went on my rule, them ore likely song for jake to have played is remain indoors.
Misha wrote most of remain indoors though.
+DeOrestes not that tasty verse riff though

So many bangers on Periphery 3
Jake is such an unassuming bad ass. Dude can flat out shred like a monster.
Closest cover ever. Periphery even featured him on their channel. Well done bro
no, he is the guitarist of periphery, not featuring.
