- David Draiman of Device and Disturbed unedited comments about why he decided to take on Roger Waters and his use of the Jewish star on a pig during his more recent productions of The Wall. He talks about defending his heritage, his family being Holocaust survivors, and his disappointment being a Pink Floyd fan. We included the full, unedited piece to give David's comments and feelings justice.

Walters didn't single out an individual or ONLY Jewish orthodox individuals or the political party in power residing in Israel, his imagery was chosen to target an entire people, of which, Draiman is part of. That is the issue.
His "tribe" which has mistreated the Palestinians.
David Draiman could not have said it better himself. On everything. Both Device and Disturbed's music have a reason behind the music. To me, its a declaration. Specifically Disturbed "Indestructible."

Hearing him speak about his grandfather and how his grandmother managed to survive the Holocaust made me tear up and stomach turn. David is a fantastic and impassioned speaker and I hope that he continues telling their stories, whether spoken, written or in song. These are stories that need to be told so that they are not forgotten, so that they will not be repeated... never again.

Why would anyone still assume Roger Waters' use of the star of David to be an anti-semitic message when Roger himself has said that it isn't and explained why it isn't? If he was actually anti-semitic or trying to spread an anti-semitic message, it would be grossly out of line with everything else he has ever spoken of in his personal philosophy and songwriting.

He is entitled to his opinion, however, the pig in question, was a negative symbol to be torn apart at the end of the show, It was meant to be offensive in that sense. Mr Water's father and grandfather both died in WW2 fighting against the nazis. There is nazi-esque imagery all over that album and film and it has been there for 30 some odd years. That album, and the show in question, is and always has been dark satire. It's art, which sometimes can be offensive... but to call Roger Waters anti semitic is ignorant. I understand that the idea of a jewish star on a pig is not a positive image, but when I see the show, I get the feeling that he's saying all symbols are just that, symbols of dogma, that perpetuate war and the like. Just my opinion, Disturbed did a great job on that Genesis cover.
To take any symbol which stands for a people, for a history, and all the suffering and sacrifice that went with it (not only in Judaïsm)- then portray it as a symbol of oppression, to be destroyed, is at the very least not a very respectful move.
I carry my symbol with pride, it gives me strength and I hold it in my heart with my head held high. To have someone label it as oppressive, take it and stigmatise it, would be very hurtful to me.
I can very much understand that jews would be 'less than pleased' and I fully agree.
Art can give meaning, opinions, and it can be unpleasant, or sting. Having a pig fly through the air with a star of David, as if it is an aberration, an oppression and something to be destroyed and to be torn apart, is not art in my opinion. That action deserves its own pig- that's the ideas that should be frowned upon and removed.

It sucks be a German Disturbed fan. I mean I don't support Nazi belief but still I hate it when people blame my people and not just the people that were Nazis or support the belief. Although I have never heard him express it that way I can tell how that is most people think one group does something bad and the entire ethnicity is bad all of a sudden. I mean, I appreciate that David answers many of the points around this issue (e.g. Israeli government not being equivalent to its people or the faith, creative licence, etc.) but his critical error was on the sticking point itself. "Those other symbols were used in the show, but not on the pig. Not on the pig." Yes, they were, Google image search. I saw it myself at the show. The hammer-and-sickle, US $ sign, the cross, and major corporate logos like Shell and Mercedes-Benz, the wall hammers (of course), various statements, etc. While inelegant, this is still textbook artistic questioning of symbols *used for oppression* (say, Palestinian plight David mentions in passing, but I'd think their children blowing up is a more pressing issue than debating symbols on a pig) rather than their *original meaning* and other uses. Just today I saw pictures of Church protesters rubbing their junk on my religious symbol that is a couple millennia old. Do they hate me or my faith? Highly doubt it; they have an issue to pick with the Church that I don't necessary agree with but understand. Sorry, David, the ADL was right to err on intellectual honesty and creative expression rather than crying wolf. Roger's father died fighting the Nazis and the former's sorrowful pride in the latter's principles (i.e. giving up his pacifism to fight true antisemitism in its most violent form) is in many ways his emotional core. Roger tears up in interviews saying he wants to fight for those suffering from violence today. This suggests being driven by love, not hate. That David talks about engaging in violence here also doesn't bode well for his case.

When a person we adore or love, criticizes something that is close to our hearts, it hurts!
Nevertheless, it remains the person we love and for this reason he has the right to criticize this too.

Schulte does not simply come up with a story about a story: he has intensively studied sources - from original sources, not from translations. Almost 1000 footnotes speak for themselves.

Will this guy stop his whining? He's offended? So are Muslims with the picture of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). If a Muslim said the exact same thing as he did about the drawing of their Prophet they'd be told to suck it up and deal with what people are saying because it's their free speech. How come it's free speech when it's insulting the Muslim religion but hate speech when it's insulting the Jewish religion? He also goes on to say that Roger Waters doesn't have the right to do what he did, if the Danish artist has the right to draw a prophet with a bomb on his head or South Park to animate the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as a pedophile, then Roger has every right to put a star of David on a pig, it's called freedom, look it up. And he says it's not about artistic freedom or freedom of expression, it's about hate imagery; Strange how when someone draws a picture of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) it's artistic freedom but when someone puts a star of David on a balloon pig it's hate imagery. I wonder would he have said the same about the Danish cartoon?...
Also to add to my point he said himself that he gets violent when "defending his honor".
The difference is that you don't see Jews massacring and beheading people because of some drawings, everybody has the right to be offended, nobody has the right to murder other people
