Hi Rasun, you don't need to apologise. The video will help all tourists avoid these people and enjoy their time in Sri Lanka. I should've mentioned to ask a nearby local for help actually. Just like we saw my subscriber at the beginning of the video, everyone on the street will help guests.
This happens in places around the world where there is a lot of tourism and stark contrast in social classes. Absolutely classic one this scam. Stay vigilant!
We got scammed in exactly the same way. My wife is by birth Sri Lankan with a little bit of Punjabi roots. She went hard on the driver and threatened to call the police. Driver got scared and we payed a descent price, but we learned our lessons.
I’m srilankan Jaffna. But living in Switzerland 🇨🇭. Yeah so many scams in Colombo i know well. So bad people are doing scamming. Your doing good job bro. 👍

nice video! luckyly nothing similar happened to me in my time there :)! most drivers had fair prices. especially in Kandy :)! looking forward to more vlogs :)!
You're absolutely right when you say these people on the streets of Colombo aren't to be trusted. I visited last month, and wow, they're out to get you. I got to Colombo after exploring other parts of the country, and boy was I in for a surprise...left a bad taste in my mouth, those experiences with tuktuk drivers. And every single one of them wanted to take us to a gem store, even telling us they'd get free kerosene even if we don't purchase anything. Out of politeness we went in the first time, but after seeing every single driver doing that, we knew better. One took us to a random joint for breakfast after a tourism person told him to take us to an attraction not far from Fort, but thankfully there were locals at that spot and the food was fine. And I'll never know why those meter tuktuks have 60 or 70 (I'm not sure) as their zero point. I started booking just Pick Me rides (between these two, a massive difference in prices) after these experiences, even if those would take longer to arrive.
It is worse in another country that I visited recently where the tuktuk driver drove near to an isolate place with his friends in another tuktuk following me and they robbed me and I had to jump off a bridge to escape them and they even tried to rip off my pants I was wearing to steal them .
I love the guide's demeanor change after the gem store. Before it's all "so happy to meet you, I don't mind taking some of my time off to show you around. After Karl doesn't buy anything from the scam store: "ok"
Hey Karl, As a Sri Lankan, I feel shame about these people and very sorry about this. Also sometimes srilankans also getting scammed by these people. Also i have to thank you for exposing these type of people, your video was on news too. Best way to avoid these type of scammers, Uber of pickme.
Pro tip: in case if you can’t catch an Uber, only get in to three wheelers who have meters installed. Meters are typically installed overhead on the top left side of the windscreen (on the inside). Meters will give you fares on fair and transparent basis.
Thank you Karl for exposing these con men. You being a tall ,strong man helps in not being bullied by these pests. I hope the Sri Lankan Police are onto this, and not just turning a blind eye for a bribe. Love your videos....Keep exploring
Hi Karl, awesome vlog as normal. Just to say. my wife and i have travelled extensively all over the world and even lived in Lagos nigeria but we were caught by one of the street scammers in Sri Lanka, very clever and almost exactly the same way you were scammed in this vlog. Such a shame as the majority of Sri Lankans we met were amazing. Take note everyone and follow Karls advice.
Same situation with the tuktuk drivers in Bangkok , If you let them know in advance you know the scam , taking you to a gem shop or a tailor , you can get the ride for free. You need to spend at least 10 minutes or so in the chosen shop and the tuktuk driver will get a 300 baht fuel coupon from the shop owner . ( just for bringing you there ) Used to go all over BKK for free playing along with the tuktuk drivers, If you buy something they can get as much as 40% of what you spent in that store. That’s the reason why they’re so keen to drive you around. You need to say before you get in ,” I want to go there or there , 1 stop only so the ride is for free !! “ , they’ll agree without hesitation.
Hi Karl, always loved what you do, bringing light to so many things ..please stay for a lil longer exposing all these 2bit scammers...Uber and Pickme travelling apps helps a lot, if no choice, always go by a metered taxi..non metered ones are always scammers

Man I am so sorry u had the experience this. But u did really well and awesome job. I am a sir Lankan and I am so ashamed of these people. As you mentioned, real Sri Lankan would never do this and they will drop you off for free.
We generally found the people of Sri Lanka lovely, kind and honest, but we did have one scam tuk-tuk driver in Colombo. it was a similar set up, but with a twist. We met a kindly old man on the street who had a chat, showed us some hard to fathom military ID, told us he worked for the government, then suggested we visit a certain temple. He walked along, said it was close, waved us after him and made a call on his phone. Next thing a tuk-tuk pulled up, he gestured to get in, instructed the man to drive us to the temple and waved us off. The driver drove us around to a different temple before going to the second temple. He wanted to wait and drive us to more attractions afterwards, but we waved him off and asked him what we owed him. He asked for 2000 rupees for the 200 rupee ride. But we weren't having it. I asked him to follow me and we'd ask a policeman what he thought was a fair price. He became very agressive, but luckily I then saw a policeman and waved him over. The driver left without getting any money at all!
You dont have to apologize for others faults .. its common for all the capitals in the world .. the thing is, its quite shame to SL reputation on international platform

I had one who wouldn't leave me alone. He was quite a nice guy though. Waited outside my hotel for 2 hours and took me where I wanted to go and took pics. He followed us for hours then and I resorted to buying him beers and stuff. Had to tell him he can go now
Really annoying. I like my space. I have cero tolerance for clingy people.
@@Areli_Precious I don't either especially when I was with my wife. I didn't want to be rude but he outstayed his welcome after 3 hours and myself and wife wanted dinner alone so paid him to go haha

It's sad that alot of third world countries are like this. My relative went to Honduras and even the cops were asking for $ for them to "guide" you and just direct you.
Sri lanka is a beautiful country with lovely locals and walking scammers. Its great of you to create this video as a help to other tourists. We cannot stop these scams man best is to know what is present and avoid them. I think u have done a great job in this case

Oh...this shitty people spoil the country's good name and image.
As a local, I apologize on behalf of all Sri Lankan's for the trouble you faced. You did bravo. Don't afraid, don't get panic. Any tourist coming t SL, if you face such an incident and make your voice out, there will be hundreds of Sri Lankan people on your side to protect you against those scammers. Don't afraid. Ask for a help.
Karl, If you can please send the footage to foreign ministry or Police head quarters (not to a local station) to take actions against those people and similar rising scammers.
Enjoy your visit!
Hi Rasun, you don't need to apologise. The video will help all tourists avoid these people and enjoy their time in Sri Lanka. I should've mentioned to ask a nearby local for help actually. Just like we saw my subscriber at the beginning of the video, everyone on the street will help guests.
I am glad they are caught on Camara ! Hope this stops these scammers, & give good prospective of sri lankan tourism !🇱🇰🤘
I hope he took footage to the authorities.

I am actually from Sri Lanka and never knew this happened in my country. Really sorry you had to go through this. I was also suprised you added subtitles.
Excellent detective work! Nicely exposed. Great guidance for the tourist Carl!
nice video! luckyly nothing similar happened to me in my time there :)!
most drivers had fair prices. especially in Kandy :)!
looking forward to more vlogs :)!
Hehe Domi. Im watching your Srilankan series ... Thank you for making videos about Sri Lanka and support tourism of SL
Yo! how are you enjoying Nepal!
Thanks for spreading awareness!
India main tho 500 Do bol the hai ,but Karl be like 250 le lo 😎, ya Ghar jao
Because its is the minimum price for a tuk tuk ride in Sri Lanka ! (50-60-70)

The streets of Colombo look really nice. Shame about these guys...

Thank you for showing us the scam. What a hassle for visitors 🤮
Big Fan Bro Karl . . You're just teaching us a survival techniques and spreading awareness to survive from scammers and their rat trap
Thanks so much for the awareness of those scammers bro!!
Awesome content Karl 👏 👌, have been binge watch on way to work for a couple of days.
NO ONE CAN TELL ME THIS GUY ISN'T PEWDIEPIE'S BROTHER
Same situation with the tuktuk drivers in Bangkok ,
If you let them know in advance you know the scam , taking you to a gem shop or a tailor , you can get the ride for free. You need to spend at least 10 minutes or so in the chosen shop and the tuktuk driver will get a 300 baht fuel coupon from the shop owner . ( just for bringing you there )
Used to go all over BKK for free playing along with the tuktuk drivers,
If you buy something they can get as much as 40% of what you spent in that store.
That’s the reason why they’re so keen to drive you around.
You need to say before you get in ,” I want to go there or there , 1 stop only so the ride is for free !! “ , they’ll agree without hesitation.
Be brave, Fight these scammers like Carl did.
Love from Sri Lanka ❤️🇱🇰

Bro This is better than Netflix. What an adventure.
I am from srilanka, and i am extremely sorry Karl and these people will soon get their punishment;)

*Well, that scam was a bit or more like a same scam which you would encounter in Bangkok Thailand. I have been to Sri Lanka a few years ago and I hired a rickshaw, the driver was so nice and he took me around to different tourist areas for almost 3 hours and I just paid him Rs. 700 and he was very happy, but yes now as the fuel prices have got higher you can pay more but not really 4800 ore 3800.. that's crazy.*
Yeah you are right ... As a Srilankan i would give him 1,500 rupees for 3h ride.. As locals we not only pay for distance but also we are paying extra money for his time too..! As foreigners you have to know that you would never get everything for local price... so you can pay atleast Rs 1500.
Same like Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Kuala Lumpur. But yeah BKK especially. Never once happened to me because i don't fall for it but seen people falling for it numerous times always.
Lol in 4800 I can travel halfway across India in first class
