Sir, I am a Sri Lankan. I'm deeply ashamed that you had to go through this. There are actual friendly locals. Everyone is not like this. I would like to apologize behalf of my island nation and I hope you visit Sri Lanka again.
You're absolutely right when you say these people on the streets of Colombo aren't to be trusted. I visited last month, and wow, they're out to get you. I got to Colombo after exploring other parts of the country, and boy was I in for a surprise...left a bad taste in my mouth, those experiences with tuktuk drivers. And every single one of them wanted to take us to a gem store, even telling us they'd get free kerosene even if we don't purchase anything. Out of politeness we went in the first time, but after seeing every single driver doing that, we knew better. One took us to a random joint for breakfast after a tourism person told him to take us to an attraction not far from Fort, but thankfully there were locals at that spot and the food was fine. And I'll never know why those meter tuktuks have 60 or 70 (I'm not sure) as their zero point. I started booking just Pick Me rides (between these two, a massive difference in prices) after these experiences, even if those would take longer to arrive.
It is worse in another country that I visited recently where the tuktuk driver drove near to an isolate place with his friends in another tuktuk following me and they robbed me and I had to jump off a bridge to escape them and they even tried to rip off my pants I was wearing to steal them .
With 4800 LKR you can go all the way to South of Sri Lanka with an Uber. We're so sorry man about your terrible experience. Be watchful when trusting anyone around colombo streets.
nice video! luckyly nothing similar happened to me in my time there :)! most drivers had fair prices. especially in Kandy :)! looking forward to more vlogs :)!
Same situation with the tuktuk drivers in Bangkok , If you let them know in advance you know the scam , taking you to a gem shop or a tailor , you can get the ride for free. You need to spend at least 10 minutes or so in the chosen shop and the tuktuk driver will get a 300 baht fuel coupon from the shop owner . ( just for bringing you there ) Used to go all over BKK for free playing along with the tuktuk drivers, If you buy something they can get as much as 40% of what you spent in that store. That’s the reason why they’re so keen to drive you around. You need to say before you get in ,” I want to go there or there , 1 stop only so the ride is for free !! “ , they’ll agree without hesitation.
I am actually from Sri Lanka and never knew this happened in my country. Really sorry you had to go through this. I was also suprised you added subtitles.
*Well, that scam was a bit or more like a same scam which you would encounter in Bangkok Thailand. I have been to Sri Lanka a few years ago and I hired a rickshaw, the driver was so nice and he took me around to different tourist areas for almost 3 hours and I just paid him Rs. 700 and he was very happy, but yes now as the fuel prices have got higher you can pay more but not really 4800 ore 3800.. that's crazy.*
Yeah you are right ... As a Srilankan i would give him 1,500 rupees for 3h ride.. As locals we not only pay for distance but also we are paying extra money for his time too..! As foreigners you have to know that you would never get everything for local price... so you can pay atleast Rs 1500.
Same like Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Kuala Lumpur. But yeah BKK especially. Never once happened to me because i don't fall for it but seen people falling for it numerous times always.
Hi we Also travel in many countries. Every country has economical problems these days. Best thing is to have a plan where you going and what. Before you get in to the taxi ask the price, make a deal. We are Sri Lankans . But still if we go on a taxi we always make a price before the journey. So be mindful next time.
We generally found the people of Sri Lanka lovely, kind and honest, but we did have one scam tuk-tuk driver in Colombo. it was a similar set up, but with a twist. We met a kindly old man on the street who had a chat, showed us some hard to fathom military ID, told us he worked for the government, then suggested we visit a certain temple. He walked along, said it was close, waved us after him and made a call on his phone. Next thing a tuk-tuk pulled up, he gestured to get in, instructed the man to drive us to the temple and waved us off. The driver drove us around to a different temple before going to the second temple. He wanted to wait and drive us to more attractions afterwards, but we waved him off and asked him what we owed him. He asked for 2000 rupees for the 200 rupee ride. But we weren't having it. I asked him to follow me and we'd ask a policeman what he thought was a fair price. He became very agressive, but luckily I then saw a policeman and waved him over. The driver left without getting any money at all!

Businesses don't stay in business if they are operating at a -50% loss constantly. They are obviously making a profit even after giving you a "discount" or they're selling fakes. If you seriously about buying gems, always get a trusted third party source to verify the authenticity and value of the gem before buying. Good info vid.
Thank you very much for exposing these scammers who are ruining the reputation of this beautiful country for few bucks. Best way is to use a taxi with a meter on it so you don't have to negotiate pricing.
6:40 the way his voice breaks at the end when u start enquiring about so-called "certification" xD
It's so nice to see a video pop up like this, Sri Lanka is filled with scammers in every touruist attractions sites, As Citizens we do get scammed by these people, not only colombo every part of Srilanka is special for different types of scammers, your video help so much for new visitors to our country, keep rocking Karl❤️.
It’s so sad that people spend money flying to countries like this, spend money on hotels, spend money of food, spend money on souvenirs, but they still have to worry about getting scammed and taking advantage of.. I’m sure these videos help thousands of people!! God bless Karl 🙏
It's sad that alot of third world countries are like this. My relative went to Honduras and even the cops were asking for $ for them to "guide" you and just direct you.
As a Sri Lankan, Its good that you are bringing light to these scammers. They like to take the advantage of tourists not being in Sri Lanka long enough to know the prices which is just awful.
I'm ashamed to watch this as a Sri Lankan... Great work Karl for exposing these scammers & their tricks!
Bro the fact that you endanger your life in a sense for sharing info and helping others to know what you were exposing is very very brave and good job. stay safe always !!👌
There are many good people in Sri Lanka among scammers like this .. Beware of these people. And thank you Karl for share this and make more vlogs like this. Its much help for other tourist people. Love from Sri Lanka 🇱🇰
Pro tip: in case if you can’t catch an Uber, only get in to three wheelers who have meters installed. Meters are typically installed overhead on the top left side of the windscreen (on the inside). Meters will give you fares on fair and transparent basis.
Hi Karl, I have been with your channel from a very long time and if I ever knew you are in Sri Lanka, I my self personally would have visited you. I am a big fan of yours from a very long time. I accidentally came across this video yesterday on facebook, and most of the people never have heard about you there, I told to everyone there how much brave you are and how much of work you do in order to put the scammers behind bars and single handedly you could have taken this man's teeth out because you are a guy with that much of guts to do one man show to expose big time crooks. Nice to see you once again and hope you have enjoyed the stay and as a sri lankan and globe trotter my self, I am really sad to see this happened to you!!! Have a great time!!!
NO ONE CAN TELL ME THIS GUY ISN'T PEWDIEPIE'S BROTHER
Karl, Bro thanks for showing about this scammers in Sri Lanka. They destroying our Goodwill in our country. Thanks
We got scammed in exactly the same way. My wife is by birth Sri Lankan with a little bit of Punjabi roots. She went hard on the driver and threatened to call the police. Driver got scared and we payed a descent price, but we learned our lessons.
The streets of Colombo look really nice. Shame about these guys...
Some random guy off the street wants to show you around the city and bring you shopping for gems but he's not a tour guide 😂
It's just his day off bro, nothing suspicious going on here lol.
Gemmy pfp
I just subscribed crazy how you put yourself in danger to expose this scumbags
Thank you Karl for this video. As someone who is part Sri Lankan and went 3 times. I am glad you were able to make this video for everyone that follows you so they would be aware when they go to Sri Lanka
I am glad they are caught on Camara ! Hope this stops these scammers, & give good prospective of sri lankan tourism !🇱🇰🤘
I hope he took footage to the authorities.
I’m srilankan Jaffna. But living in Switzerland 🇨🇭. Yeah so many scams in Colombo i know well. So bad people are doing scamming. Your doing good job bro. 👍
Amazing! You’re scamming the scammers🤣🤣🤣🤣 Love it bro!
He is the guy from your other taxi video 4 years ago! (The man in the blue on the thumbnail) Keep up catching these scammers and help others! Thank you x

Sri lanka is a beautiful country with lovely locals and walking scammers. Its great of you to create this video as a help to other tourists. We cannot stop these scams man best is to know what is present and avoid them. I think u have done a great job in this case
This happens in places around the world where there is a lot of tourism and stark contrast in social classes. Absolutely classic one this scam. Stay vigilant!
India main tho 500 Do bol the hai ,but Karl be like 250 le lo 😎, ya Ghar jao
Because its is the minimum price for a tuk tuk ride in Sri Lanka ! (50-60-70)
It is worse in another country that I visited recently where the tuktuk driver drove near to an isolate place with his friends in another tuktuk following me and they robbed me and I had to jump off a bridge to escape them and they even tried to rip off my pants I was wearing to steal them .
@@philipmullins6235 can you be describe your ordeal in more detail on a blog or here or a different social media platform? Would love to read it.

Wow 4,800. Thanks for letting people know the real deal. We need more of these videos
With 4800 LKR you can go all the way to South of Sri Lanka with an Uber. We're so sorry man about your terrible experience. Be watchful when trusting anyone around colombo streets.
It’s the same price as an Uber in the U.S. people be tweaking

nice video! luckyly nothing similar happened to me in my time there :)!
most drivers had fair prices. especially in Kandy :)!
looking forward to more vlogs :)!
Hehe Domi. Im watching your Srilankan series ... Thank you for making videos about Sri Lanka and support tourism of SL
Yo! how are you enjoying Nepal!
Same situation with the tuktuk drivers in Bangkok ,
If you let them know in advance you know the scam , taking you to a gem shop or a tailor , you can get the ride for free. You need to spend at least 10 minutes or so in the chosen shop and the tuktuk driver will get a 300 baht fuel coupon from the shop owner . ( just for bringing you there )
Used to go all over BKK for free playing along with the tuktuk drivers,
If you buy something they can get as much as 40% of what you spent in that store.
That’s the reason why they’re so keen to drive you around.
You need to say before you get in ,” I want to go there or there , 1 stop only so the ride is for free !! “ , they’ll agree without hesitation.
1st red flag: scammer shook his hand and didn’t make eye contact
I am actually from Sri Lanka and never knew this happened in my country. Really sorry you had to go through this. I was also suprised you added subtitles.
Thank you Karl for revealing the scammers and their methods.

Exposing evil people
They probably have a hit out on you
Thank you Karl. We got so many scammers like this in Sri Lanka. We really appreciate you for showing the reality.
Can we just appreciate how nice karl’s kurta looks. Love from Pakistan 💚
Thanks! I really loved this one. First time I bought a print one like this.
Lol in 4800 I can travel halfway across India in first class
Thanks for spreading awareness!
Hi Karl, awesome vlog as normal. Just to say. my wife and i have travelled extensively all over the world and even lived in Lagos nigeria but we were caught by one of the street scammers in Sri Lanka, very clever and almost exactly the same way you were scammed in this vlog. Such a shame as the majority of Sri Lankans we met were amazing. Take note everyone and follow Karls advice.
Thank you Karl for exposing these con men. You being a tall ,strong man helps in not being bullied by these pests. I hope the Sri Lankan Police are onto this, and not just turning a blind eye for a bribe. Love your videos....Keep exploring
Rs 4800 is about 15 us dollars. It's what I pay a taxi to take me 15 min to the corner store.
Awesome content Karl 👏 👌, have been binge watch on way to work for a couple of days.
Big Fan Bro Karl . . You're just teaching us a survival techniques and spreading awareness to survive from scammers and their rat trap
Be brave, Fight these scammers like Carl did.
Love from Sri Lanka ❤️🇱🇰
Good Work Bro. Keep Rocking 🔥🔥🔥🔥
You’re offering a great public service, Karl
India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh - you will find same type of scams because people in these parts are all the same except for some minor regional variation. Thanks Karl. 😊
Thanks so much for the awareness of those scammers bro!!
Great video one of those videos that remind me why I started watching
Enjoy it Bro. I think I've covered nearly every tourist scam now.
First time in Asia in 2000, was in Sri Lanka...scams everywhere, every time....waiting you on the beach hours long.We had enough and for 9 years never came back, until Thailand. We learned there a lot and it's cam free for us ....
My sapphires were worthless when I tried to resell in UK. A gem dealer said they were full of flaws.
Were they real?
You bought from one of these shops? Did you know from the beginning you were going to sell?
Hi Karl, always loved what you do, bringing light to so many things ..please stay for a lil longer exposing all these 2bit scammers...Uber and Pickme travelling apps helps a lot, if no choice, always go by a metered taxi..non metered ones are always scammers

You did really good job for evryone by showing these scammers. These people are always try to scam foreigners. Just an advice for all foreign peole who will travel to Srilanka, if you gonna use Taxi, always ask Taxi meter and kepp regular checking while you are in the taxi. At the end of tour trip you can see total trip amount.
you deal with 'em so smoothly and with a bold attitude.....some tips please ...
Bro, I am surprised foreigners ain’t fighting scammers like this.
Its okay in SL bcs 99% SLns are polite and friendly 😅
Physical fighting? Imagine being a foreigner who starts a fight abroad, getting out of that would def be difficult in a country that you aren't a native in!
$13 for a taxi ride isn’t really that big of a deal
No cause then you'll get called racist and get killed by some gingerbread man
I'm not surprised, it could happen everywhere in the world. It's surprising that someone could think that a stranger, in his day off, hang out with you for free all day
I mean, it happened to me in Kyoto and Bangkok, some people are just nice in some bars.
If you search for scammers obviously you will find but I had total different experience than this may be very less people like this but i have no doubt Sri Lankans are one of the friendly nation I have ever seen for tourists than others. But these kind of people has to be stopped by authorities.
You are such a kind hearted person yet you have a backbone that I used to Not have and now I do. I love how you just don't give a fu.k where you are at and you refuse to be taken advantage of. Just please my friend be careful. It would really suck to hear you got hurt by one of these types of people.
Hey Karl, As a Sri Lankan, I feel shame about these people and very sorry about this. Also sometimes srilankans also getting scammed by these people. Also i have to thank you for exposing these type of people, your video was on news too. Best way to avoid these type of scammers, Uber of pickme.
