As a Sinhala Buddhist i wholeheartedly feel for the Malay community in Sri lanka. We really have taken so much from them with very little credit given. As she said they have given us so much not only food. Even batik. We have a significant batik industry in our country and we also have made it as our own. Many Sinhala Bhudhists wear batik clothing as it is integral part of our culture. Also many people dont know that it was the Sri lankan malays who introduced the drums to the island. We use the rabban which is a large drum used on our new years and also many drums are used for our Kandyan dancing also Kandyan Perahara which is one of the biggest Bhudhist cultural and historical parades. So it is not just food the Sri lanka malays community has truly given so much. Big thanks to best ever food review show for coming to Sri lanka and painting the real picture. P.S i didnt mean to upset anyone i just wrote what i felt and know. I have history masters from peradeniya university. Anyway please try to read the book by professor, Wijerathna Dissanayaka P.H.D- IPSRALI RABAN PADA SAHA BERA PADA.

The memories of Sri Lankan food evoke a cupboard full of spices and rich curries that bring together families. Sri Lankan food is an expression of the country's rich history and is full of delightful surprises, just like the island itself. Characterised by vibrant colours and fragrant aromas, every dish, from main meals to desserts and cakes, makes use of the country's bounty of fresh spices. An ordinary Sinhalese curry, for example, can contain up to thirteen herbs and spices: chillies, coriander, cumin, curry leaves, fennel, fenugreek, garlic, ginger, lomongrass, lime, onion, pandanus leaf and turmeric. It is no wonder, then, that spices are used by Sri Lankan people with such ease, not only creating food that is unique and interesting, but also accessing their healing properties as part of Ayurvedic medicine. Cheers, Domenico.
I'm from India I loved watching your Srilankan-Malai-Muslim cooking, I felt that the food would be really tasty, I'm planning to visit Srilanka soon, I'll try to visit Kandy. Thanks.

@@BrokeBillionare They were from the Moor community from a city in eastern Sri Lankan that has a Muslim-majority population. Moors are different to Malays, though there is intermarriage between them due to shared religion. The native language of the Moors is Tamil and the native language of the Malays is Sri Lankan Malay. Having said that, I just want to say the Moor community actually warned the Sri Lankan government about rising extremism in their community. They practice a form of Islam that is primarily Sufi influenced and is more similar to the form of Islam practiced in other parts of South Asia (e.g. India and Southeast Asia (e.g. Myanmar, Thailand). However, due to a lot of Moors travelling to the Middle East to work, a large section became conservative and adopted Arabic customs and interpretation of Islam (Wahhabism). The situation is similar to what has happened in some Southeast Asian countries to the east of Sri Lanka like Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines where large sections of the local Muslim populations have become very conservative against the South/Southeast Asian interpretation of Islam.
@@BrokeBillionare That was done by a radical Muslim group. They attacked churches and hotels. Malay Muslims or Majority of Muslims were not part of any of these attacks and Majority of them are very peaceful people and they condemn the attack. Lot of controversy behind this attack and it's a popular belief that behind these attacks there was a political influence also.
@@sudeshkriella4875 people generally believe that all Muslim are one people. Actually there are a lot of fault lines in Muslim. For example, an Bengali Muslim is totally different from a Kerala Muslim and north Indian Muslim. It is wrong to throw the entire community under the bus but it is better to know which communities are getting radicalized and help the moderates and good people take control of their community and help young people to focus on their career rather than ideology. The reason I asked was not to blame them but to get an idea which Muslim group had issues. Most young Muslims in the US are lovely people and very good at mixing with other communities but I have seen that older Muslims and very few young ones hate Jews to the extreme.

Hey neighbour, Malaysian here. We also called it putu (putu bambu/putu piring) here, but usually they are made with rice flour instead the whole rice. And babat here literally means stomach ( perut ).

As Malaysian, this is shocking to know there's a *dying community in Sri Lanka. Because there's no any knowledge here in Malaysia About one of our Malay community are *dying out there. Hope to spread Sri Lankans Malays awareness in Malaysia. All love from Malaysia ❤️❤️. Really love sunny. Been following you on your early video till now
When the lady in this video says that the Malay community in Sri Lanka is 'dying', she does not mean that the Malay people are being put to death. The Malay community in Sri Lanka is very small and, as a result, people of the Malay community frequently marry people from other Sri Lankan communities, - as the Malay lady goes on to explain later in the video. As such, the number of people who are purely of Malay origin is reducing in Sri Lanka. This should not be viewed as undesirable. It is, after all, the right of every person in Sri Lanka (and elsewhere) to enter into marriage with any person they wish to irrespective of the other person's race. Sri Lankan Malays tend to be very sociable and, unlike other Sri Lankan Muslims, are more open to associating with people of other Sri Lankan communities. The Malay people in Sri Lanka are very musical and they also often engage in a variety of sports. These qualities lead to Sri Lankan Malays associating much more with other Sri Lankan communities than other Sri Lankan Muslims. These associations, which usually start off on the basis of friendship, not infrequently take on romantic connotations leading to marriage. As such, over time, the number of 'mixed' Malay people in Sri Lanka has increased while the number of 'pure' Sri Lankan Malay people has declined. Another point to note is that, though the people of this community are generally known and referred to as 'Malay' this does not necessarily mean that they are all from Malaysia. Many Sri Lankan Malays are originally from Indonesia, especially from the main island of Jawa in Indonesia. Sri Lankan Malays have played an important role in Sri Lanka's history and are an integral and inseparable part of Sri Lankan society. Their difference from other Sri Lankans only adds to the value of all Sri Lankans and they are a beloved aspect of Sri Lankan society. They are as Sri Lankan as anything you will find in Sri Lanka.
@@govithabang8912 yeap.. i concur with your narratives. If the lady mentioned her ancestors hailed from the malay archipelago, instead of malaysia, I believe her narratives would have been of more credence ... For once, malaysians dont call the buffolo stomach as "babat" , the javanese do

If you notice, they dont touch the food with their left hand. It puts left handers in a bit of a pickle, but traditionally in India SL etc etc left hand is used to wash your behind, and not for anything else.
The majority seemed hateful, they "other" the Muslims for political reasons, false flag attacks to pass regulations on banning Muslims from eating halal
Another awesome episode guys. 👏 I really appreciate the level of respect that Sonny had whilst talking to the old lady. Oh you were still a larrikin, but the respect was noticed. Much applause 👏
Sri lanka didn't really ban halal meat, just that there was an issue with the previous halal certification council and they were banned from giving halal certifications. It has since been sorted with a regulated non profit halal certification authority being established.
Thank you for coming to Sri Lanka ❤, and yes we all are Sri Lankans, we love to live in peace and harmony, but as she said politicians misuse this diversity of people just to win their elections and ruin the country. and I'm really proud of Mis. Ruzaina and her personality as a Sri Lankan. 💞
There used to be a 'kaday' on Malay Street in Slave Island which used to sell Baabath curry and Mani pittu. It was fantastic, though it did have a great deal of chillie in it. The last time I was in Colombo I tried to locate the place but it appears to have closed. Great pity. I hope someone else starts a similar restaurant.
My mouth is dripping, my stomach is roaring, all to say: I want this food. NOW! Thanks for this journey to my childhood dishes. Even we are German, I grew up with all this dishes, except the spices, but now when I'm cooking I spice it up because I love all the heartwarming spices.

The Minority Taste food review is so important hopefully Ruzaina continues to keep their food culture alive.
Content like this should be on the main TV channels in Sri Lanka. Because I literally didn't know many things about the Malay community until I saw this and there are thousands more like me. Sri Lanka is a unique country not only because of its land space and nature but the people in it. We must find a way to attract the whole world with these qualities instead of fighting each other. Thanks to Sonny and his team for coming to Sri Lanka in this challenging time and supporting us.
Yes its True.
Yes unique country. Unique for its racism and atrocities that lakhs of Tamilians have fled the country as refugees. Unique for using cluster bombs on its innocent people. Because of these sins, you Sinhales are struggling in economic doom. Those who have fled this racist country have progressed well in their adopted countries and are a powerful lobby in many European country. You will suffer more..

This is my favourite channel. Sonnys' ability to integrate with other cultures so respectfully is second to none. Not only watching the different foods but learning about the vast array of cultures is my favourite pasttime ❤️
There are so many books with records at the university also some are locked up at the dalada maligawa historical records about these people and what they have given to Sri lanka. Anyway please try to read the book by professor, Wijerathna Dissanayaka P.H.D- IPSRALI RABAN PADA SAHA BERA PADA.

Source?
Batik came from Indonesia as far as I know. Indonesian and Malay are two different things. So can you provide a source for your claim? You said drums were introduced to Sri Lanka by the Malays as well. Would you mind providing a source for that? Because I tried searching it up and couldn't find anything along those lines.

Most of so called " Malays " are Javanese - not Malay.
the British also sent over Malays from the Singapore-Malaysia area. The Ja people you refer to were sent over by the Dutch from Indonesia.
But at the end of the day they are from the same linguistic, cultural group. They speak very similar mutually intelligible languages and have the same religion and culture. Like Norwegian and Swedish people for example.

This series brought me so much joy. I went to Sri Lanka for a month in the summer of 2018, volunteering for that duration as well as traveling and exploring.

As a Sri Lankan I love Malay culture here in Sri Lanka, coz they are really sweet and open minded people. ❤️
So who did the bombings? Were they Malay or Muslim from some other tribe? I am asking because I am ignorant of Sri Lankan culture and demographics.
@@BrokeBillionare done by moor muslims not all but small extremist groups trained by isis!
This is gold wow ! Bless all the people who had contribuated to this ! thanks ! As usual !

As indonesia i can relate to pitu. . Putu in our country. the same way to cook and ingredients but ours is sweet. . Then babat kari. . Wow we have babat too. . But we refer to more specific parts, towels like organs. .
Hey neighbour, Malaysian here. We also called it putu (putu bambu/putu piring) here, but usually they are made with rice flour instead the whole rice. And babat here literally means stomach ( perut ).
@@ridzuan94 Although she only said babat, we too refer to specific parts of the animal whrn cooked. Ikan fish, dagin meat, purut stomach, babat tripe and so on. Our language has mixed with local lingo so it sounds different than yours. Slower too.
