Just have to reform quickly. Each reform reduces growth by 20%. You can also sacrifice rulers of vassals every 2 years to reduce by 5-10, and get semi-regular events. Being at war also helps. Basically, you should always be at war and aim to have all 5 reforms passed by ~1480-1490.

I had a similar play as Xiu and took Lissabon in 1567. But France got a PU with Castille in 1500 so I went to the Ottomans instead. And got myself the most massive coalition i have ever seen after finally taking all Ottoman land by 1650. I stopped the playthrough there though because that coalition was literally all of europe and North Africa.
I can only imagine all the europeans saying "WTF SPAIN MAN WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?"

It is but most of Spains casualties are not from fighting but rather from attrition due to them laying siege on forts in the jungle.
