As someone who has gone through strife on many levels and succumbed to addiction many times this song has hit me too deep to put to words. To feel so weak and powerless yet rise up and conquer your demons. This is absolutely gorgeous

Complex levels of internal strife, bitterness, resentment, regret, bittersweet pain, all releasing into some form of acceptance...

Been a fan of tool for a long time, didn't even know Maynard had a few other bands. I found this song after an old friend hung himself. It didn't really hit me that hard because I hadn't seen him in a few years. But on that night I stumbled across this and it's like I was put in his shoes.

Could you share the song file? I've been searching on the net but there's only lame versions, I can't stand that. And couldn't find any store that still has this, digitally or physically.

I dont get why being weak and powerless is a bad thing. We all act like we fought off all the other billions(you know what I'm saying) to be born. We were a crap shoot to begin

Well, this song and album is about addiction in particular.

Then message stays same. To get through it u have to admit the powerlessness of it, which is a good thing @KedViper

I really love all the acoustic arrangements they did of their songs, but I gotta admit, this is really fucking bad! Weak & Powerless is one of the most solidly composed pop songs I’ve ever heard in my entire life. So not really sure what made Billy feel compelled to add that new directionless, harmonically awakened (in the context of its business during a moment in the song that really benefits from a breather, during the mid section, it just flat out doesn’t work as an intro, it has nothing to do with the rest of the material, it’s just a bunch of SUS chords moving around aimlessly) and that ending is atrocious!! Sorry but Billy IS an incredible composer, he’s written some of the most exciting, evocative and harmonically district pop songs of the 2000s, that’s why this is coming as such a shock to me. I’ve been listening to these tracks all since back in the 2000s but I somehow completely forgot about this acoustic arrangement, dayum! What a bummer. Lol. This song deserves a proper acoustic arrangement. 😞

I sort of agree, though I deem your attitude to be wrong, in the sense of the negativity present in it; I'm glad, nevertheless, that someone else's perception of this arrangement is similar to mine.
(From a technical/music-theory/musical/tonal/harmonic perspective, they obviously didn't do it as well as they could have, and I would love to hear an acoustic version with, basically, the same melodic/harmonic qualities as the original one. Nevertheless, I enjoy listening to this version as a work of art in it's own right, in the folk/blues sense in which it does function, wherein the melodic qualities of the song are substituted for other, different sound qualities, and the expression of the emotional attitude dominates in a way that is, perhaps, not musical, strictly speaking. The one thing that I dislike above everything else in this version is the way they changed the break/bridge before the final chorus - where the lyrical subject / protagonist talks to the angel, about the devil - which is, at least aesthetically, along with the chorus, my favorite part of the song. I very much dislike the way they ''chopped it up'', with the rhythmically punctuating sound of the guitar chords accenting the rhythmic sections, or quarters, or however they're actually called, I don't know, beats, bars... But I can, even with this, enjoy the version, if I listen to it without letting myself long for the imaginary perfect acoustic version according to my taste.)

I was wondering if I was the only one who felt this way too. I understand many fans would be hard-pressed to say even the slighted off word in criticism about their favorite band as they very often descend deep into hero worship, but…
It seems that the chorus was utterly destroyed in this version, as it doesn't line up at all with the vocal harmonies and melody. It's discordant to say the least, and I was wondering if maybe that was intentional. Just the same, having heard so many performances of this song, they are one of the tightest bands I've heard in a very long time. And Maynard's vocal styling is so simple, yet powerful, just for that reason. I wonder why they did it this way. I love hearing artists discuss why they do things, as it really provides a lot of insight and perspective for those of us in simpleton land. :)

@@datatwo7405 the original version doesn’t really have any rhythm guitar part, the tune is driven primarily by the bassline, so I’d imagine he had to come up with something that could suit the singer songwriter acoustic guitar performance aesthetic and just came up with a crappy idea.. that’s what I’d imagine at least.

@@datatwo7405 I mean not sure why he didn’t just harmonize the harmonies implied by the counterpoint between bass and lead guitar.. being an artist is about being a decision maker, and sometimes artists artists just make bad decisions.. haha.

@@datatwo7405 I actually made an arrangement of the song the week I wrote that comment a year ago lmao. for solo guitar that contained the original harmonies bassline and filled in the chord AND had the lead guitar counter melody all included. Was pretty difficult to play, but fuck I shoulda recorded it.
