Thirteenth Step is the prettiest record I own. It’s mood music but when I’m in that mood nothing else hits quite like it. Howerdel is the master of knowing exactly what note to play and when to play it. That record hits feelings for me that nothing else does or will.

The first 2 albums really changed how I viewed the music I love to listen to, Maynard is so emotional, Billy often playing such wonderful simple tunes then the mix just pulling you in so you lose yourself completely. Man you absolutely nailed that prediction of the video for So Long and Thanks for All the Fish! The title is a reference to the end of the world from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, wherein the dolphins all fly off into space when the world is about to be destroyed by aliens. The video does also involve the end of the world. Although due to far more human reasons. And it makes me weep!

I’m always still here! Oofta so much to say about these songs. I’m going to have to break my comments into bite size. First there was a discrepancy between Billy and Maynard about the the lyrical content of The Noose. Both Maynard and Billy’s mothers died roughly the same time. When Billy made the music it was inspired by that moment in his life so he thought that the song should be about their mothers passing. But Maynard didn’t want the content of the song to change the direction of the concept of the album which is about addiction and the many forms and different perspectives of addiction

Love that you got the intent behind SLATFATF - here’s this slightly pop-y track, how can we turn that upside down, lyrically, while still having soaring vocals?

APC is one of those bands that leashed me as a teen and shaped me as a young adult into who I am today. What I love about your reactions is that it takes me back to when I heard this stuff for the first time and felt the same things you just did. F*ck me it makes me glad to be alive... and to be phenomenally blessed (I'm not religious but no other word is adequate) to experience sensation and consciousness. I still haven't lost the sense of awe I experienced in my adolescence of the sheer magnificence of FEELING... of being... of living that music and art evokes... it's a hook that never let me go (you might have guessed that's what's behind the name 'Sense Music Media').

  • @WiredTalkWithBigG
    @WiredTalkWithBigG 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Not sure if anyone else has commented on it but "So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish" is a reference to Douglas Adams' "A Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy". It refers to the dolphins as being the most sentient beings on planet Earth and upon the arrival of the end of the world (which is brought around by an alien race named the Vogons - who have arranged for the destruction of our planet to make way for an interstellar super-highway), all of the planets dolphins decide to leave the planet so go flying away (yup, flying lol), and the last thing they say to the humans is "so long, and thanks for all the fish".
Obviously that isn't the actual subject matter of the track, which is actually about US bringing about the end of the world through our over-consumption and polluting of the sea and it's inhabitants.

"So Long and Thanks for All the Fish" was very much done to be mockery.
The entire song is a double entendre between celebration and atomic destruction. The song is written in major, with lyrics about mutually assured destruction and the end of our world. The title was taken from the book "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and there are references to celebrity icons that have passed away. Easily, this song is one of my favorites, and i have seen very few people give it a chance, let alone, comprehend the song.

Sleeping Beauty was a very interesting song to see live, I saw APC when they first toured with NIN. Sleeping Beauty is probably my favorite song on Mer du Noms...I love the way Maynard plays with his voice in this track. 3 Libras may be a prettier(?) melody, but there's just something about this one that hits me harder.
Have you heard of, or listened to, a band called Sleepy time Gorilla Museum? They remind me a little of Primus (both are Bay Area bands)...not in the way they sound, because neither band sounds like *anyone else*, but in their playful and experimental an up roach to music. I'd be extremely curious to hear your impressions. They have 3 "major" songs - Hymn to the Morning Star, The Donkey Headed Adversary of Human Opens the Book (these two open their album Of Natural History and *kind of* go together, and then also Sleep is Wrong from Grand Opening and Closing.

    Song 1:
@7:45 seriously have to be in awe of how this is a completely perfect rondole' (sp?). I mean, people "do this" all the time. But they are almost never succesful at it, nor is it ever nearly as complicated a puzzle. Every line of music fits inside the same phrase, but never in the same pocket, so each never gets in the other's way. Every once in a while I just have to say "I am not worthy." The planning that went into how this all fits together in Noose, is one of those times. Hat's off. Then, MJK kicks us gently, right in the teeth, once more. "Yeah that's your halo that's choking you." - ouch. dick. lol
    Song 2:
@11:08 notice how the bass goes from clean at the beginning to this crazy, "broken horn" live microphone distortion sound as the vocals kick in?
    Song 3:
@19:20 "Don't Panic." - This is for the, now in limbo, film sequel to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, called "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe". By explanation: In HGTTG: The Dolphins are leaving Earth because they know it's about to be demolished by a Vogon Intergalactic Constructor Fleet, that hangs in the air the way bricks don't, in order to make way for an intergalactic space bypass*. They were saying, "So long and thanks for all the fish." (

Still here! Sleeping Beauty is so underrated in their catalog! I was 18 when Mer De Noms came out but I had a fake ID so I could go to the bars with my 21 yo girlfriend. I sang sleeping beauty at karaoke and dedicated it to her. I knew I was making a mistake when I was singing “ poisoned and hoooooopeless.” 😅 she didn’t notice. Wonder what she’s up to these days…

"So Long and Thanks..." gives Cranberries vibes (see Dreams).

I absolutely love A Perfect Circle. Saw them at Red Rocks a couple years back and every single song is incredible. There is almost nothing that they do that isn't good. The Noose always sounded like criticism of 12 step program alcoholics. You can't say your sorry to a DUI manslaughter victim. Sad truth in it.

The title "so long and thanks for all the fish" is in reference to the movie "Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy". Namaste btw 😊

Definitely check out APC Orestes live Stone and Echo. So much ambiance.
Another good song for live ambiance is End of the Affair by Ben Howard live at Glastonbury. Such a haunting song.

13th step, as kind of implied by the title of the album, has a lot to do with people's relationships to addiction (Weak and Powerless), at least the songs featured here do, at least that's my interpretations of them, also Maynards relationship with his Mom and her heavy relationship to religion despite being paralyzed from a freak accident and his struggle to understand it. (The Noose).

Mer De Noms for the win but you can’t go wrong with Thirteenth Step. I feel after Emotive and aMOTION it wasn’t the same, yeah there are some good songs after that but not full albums.

"So long and thanks for all the fish" is what the dolphins sing before leaving planet earth right before it gets destroyed in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Great movie and great book.
