Love the song! Indeed a rather atypical song for Eluveitie, as most of their songs rely more on Chrigel Glanzmann's screams and have a more profound death metal-y sound. The instrument is a Hurdy Gurdy, see it as a mechnised violin meeting bagpipes. Keys are used to shorten string as the turning wheel goes against them, a bit like a violin and bow. It also has bourdon strings (don't know if this term is also used in English), a constantly sounding string providing the key or kwint, as you also have the constantly sounding note in the bagpips.

Probably people already told you, but:
    - I LOVED you guessed it was "Celtic-y" before you listened.
    - The language is reconstructed Gaulish language.
    - The instrument you mean, it's the hurdy-gurdy. Pretty popular in European Folk Metal and Pagan Folk bands.
    - This song belongs to their second acoustic album, "Evocation II - Pantheon", in which each song is devoted to one Gaulish deity, Epona (probably meaning "Great Mare"), is a goddess of horses, cavalry, beasts of burden, fertility and sovereignty (despite being worshipped in farms and so, according to various authors of the time, she was deemed "Rigana", Queen).
    - Their songs are usually more metal, from melodic, sweet/dark tunes that are led by female voice, to death metal-ish songs (with folk instruments still) where harsh vocals are exclusive, or combines with female vocals.
Great video, Beth, I really enjoyed this one!

Spite what you heard they actually do play some metal music that wasn’t showcased in this song. I would recommend the songs Rebirth or Ategnatos from their latest album. Her vocals really shine more and so does the metal.
As others have written, the instrument is a hurdy gurdy. There are a few similar artist that utilize it, FAUN, Omnia even Apocalypse Orchestra use it. All of which I think you would enjoy if you liked this.

I so enjoy your, reactions, Beth. Especially when it's to a band like Eluveitie, whom I thoroughly enjoy, myself. Though this was a great performance by them, I was disappointed in the quality of the recording. Like you noted, it sounded like some of the instruments weren't mic'd, or something, which took away from the richness of the music. I'd love to see you react to some more of their music. How about something that really shows more of a mix of metal and folk? How about Rebirth? That was the song I was introduced to them with, and it blew me away!

  • @nigeldepledge3790
    @nigeldepledge3790 4 ปีที่แล้ว

As others have mentioned, the instrument is a hurdy-gurdy (or, in French, une vielle). It's a wheel-bowed string instrument. Its sound is somewhat akin to a cello, but with a different set of harmonics. It has multiple drone strings and a set of keys for applying the melody strings to the wheel, and is a surprisingly versatile instrument (as well as Eluveitie, check out Storm Seeker or Patty Gurdy for more gurdy goodness).
By the way, if this sounds like ceilidh music to you, you've been going to better class of ceilidh than I ever have (XD)!

Definitely agree with vote for Inis Mona- all male vocal and amazing group performance. Ex Eluveitie members including vocalist Anna make up Cellar Darling. Official video for 'Death' is amazing, including an awesome flute solo!

    Beth,
I think you are an excellent Vocal Coach & thanks so much for being so kind to all the Rock & Metal singers you’ve reacted to, whom I absolutely love (i.e. Bruce Dickinson, Dave Mustaine, Layne Staley R.I.P.🙏, etc.). How many #SebastianBach #fans do we have on here who would love to see/hear Beth Roars react to 1 of his songs? He is the former #SkidRow #LeadSinger & absolute #BestSinger that band ever had & he has been doing his own solo thing for several years now with his very own #awesome #SoloBand, that is honestly WAY better than Skid Row, imho.
    Beth,
Why are you ignoring me? I’m a lead & rhythm guitarist of 30yrs now & I also sing & play a little piano. All I’m simply requesting is - May you please🙏do a Vocal Coach Reaction to Sebastian Bach - Kicking & Screaming? Here’s the Official Video th-cam.com/video/xKOruHhpAiQ/w-d-xo.html&app=m&persist_app=1. Will you please see & hear it?🙏I promise you if you do this, you have my word, I will not even ask you for anything else, since Sebastian Bach is my all time #favorite #Rock & #Metal lead singer & I know in my heart you will love his voice.

Sucks you picked a live video for the reaction but still a great response from you. I love these guys and have tickets to see them later this year. 🤘

The unusual instrument is called a Hurdy Gurdy and the song is in Gaulish which is an extinct Celtic language spoken in Gaul (modern-day France, Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg)
Also the song's melody is a traditional Irish song called "King of the Fairies"

I have two recommendations for you:
Anything with Lzzy Hale live for that hard rock sound and power.
Algema by Allamedah which is a fusion with traditional Portuguese fado. Very interesting sound with a particular Iberian passion.

You really need to watch X Japan - Endless Rain (The Last Live)
The crowd singing along will blow your mind.
Have a tissue you will cry.

Huh. I thought this was their concert from this years Summer Breeze, but the vid was uploaded before the festival. I might've been able to spot me. But it seems like it's from 2017. I missed that because we drank to much at our camp. Hate it when that happens. We just lost track of time.

I'm watched all of videos here in TH-cam. I don't care about the negativity of your comment about the. I'm watch you because I love the way you smile. Is that the primary reason that I watch you. And also I like the accents of your voice.😍😍😍😍

I've seen Eluveitie live in Norway. I'm lucky. I really like their music. Folk metal is awesome. I am fond of the mix between clean vocals and guttural screams and so on. I'm more into screaming vocals when it comes to Eluveitie.

the Language is Gaulish. SO a celtic language more similar to Welsh than Gaelic, but still close

You really need to evaluate "Wake Up" by Tilian. It's a hidden masterpiece of vocal excellence. Using classic phrasing with new. It literally brings me to tears how perfect he can push emotions.
