There is a massive amount of technique and control behind his performance and he still makes it so emotional and deep. What a beast! We're so lucky he's back with Conception.
That they sound well together is not the only reason that she sometimes sing with Kamelot. The keyboardplayer Oliver Palotai is Simones man and the father of her son. That world is also a small one after all!
Roy's ability to add a sense of complex character to his singing voice is what really allowed Kamelot to do these multi-part songs and two part concept albums and have them come off as masterful pieces of storytelling instead of feeling overdone or even cringy. The way you can hear the character development in not just the lyrics but also his voice is incredibly rare.
Yes! He feels younger and more esuberant in Epica, somber and more desperate in The Black Halo, matching the slower tempo and dramatic songwriting. All very tasteful and masterfully mixed and produced. Both records are among the finest in the genre imho.
Roy Khan will always hold a special place in my heart, and I treasure his recordings. That said, Tommy Karevik was about as close to a perfect replacement as you could hope for. Mad talent.
I found Kamelot after Silverthorn so I came to knis them with Tommy, but going back and listening to Roy, man they have been blessed with incredible singers.
There was a better replacement. I'm sorry, I think you meant to say Vasilis Georgiou there. Too bad he sounded very much like Khan to actually make it. But given how Kamelot has been getting worse and worse since Khan left I'm glad it never happened. Karevik may try to sound like him but can't even come close. Still a Tommy fanboy? Listen to Forever ''2013 edition'' live.
I like Karevik a lot but find the albums with Karevik to by lyrically incomprehensible. The writing has gotten really strange. Even the metaphors are difficult to digest as sensible. I know it sounds harsh but really read some of the lyrics. Especially in Shadow Theory. Several of the tracks aren't even logical even for poetry. This isn't the case for all the new songs. But it is much more noticeable now.
ROY KHAAAAAAAN!!!! Btw, I loved watching this. You're very talented, Beth. I'm a composer and singer, myself, but I've got a lot to learn in the singing department. lol People ask me for singing advice from time to time and I quickly become aware that there's a big difference between being able to sing and being able to teach - by understanding the mechanics and putting into words how each technique is performed. You're awesome. =)
I saw Kamelot a few times with Roy and also met him. He's a total class act! I also saw him with Conception years ago and they absolutely killed it. Conception was my highlight seeing Roy. Tore is such a killer guitarist!
This whole concert is a clinic on amazing talent on every instrument, as well as how to properly mix a live show. This is 100% the best sounding live album I have ever heard, in terms of sound quality. In every way, it sounds as good, if not better, than the studio versions of these songs.
Roy Khan was the main person who I really learnt a lot from. Because of him when I sing now I tend to end some words with a very bright, breathy tone with vibratto. Also he showed me that being a baritone is not a barrier to singing high notes. I love the man!
Roy Khan Is Absolutely amazing. Stunning talent. One of the best to me.....You need to see him singing alongside Simone Simmons...Absolutely spectacular!👍👍👍
Great reaction as always, thanks for doing these :) Time for some trivia! - The song is about Elizabeth Bathory, "the Blood Countess", who was obsessed with eternal life and tried to achieve it by bathing in the blood of virgins. Then you listen to TH-cam and it's super loud cause Replay Gain.

I want to recommend some quite long songs, but really great vocal performance: Blind Guardian - And Then There Was Silence iced Earth - Dante's Inferno OR Travel in Stygian (Both Live in Athens 1999) Thank you! Your metal reactions make my day.
Brilliant. I finally got to see them live in a beautiful theater setting back when their album Silverthorn came out and it was one of the most amazing live experiences I've ever had. Thanks for a great and informative video as always.
I've never heard this band before, thank you for this reaction Beth. I have definitely added them to my Playlist. Love how much you enjoy them as well.
Look up Conception as well! Roy Khan (the vocalist) left Kamelot and retired from music a couple of years ago. But recently he came back with a new Conception album!
Thank you so much for reacting to this one, Beth! I've been waiting for this! I always loved this performance to bits, but now I get the awesomeness even more, thanks to your commentary ♥️
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG! I saw your thumbnail at the bottom right corner of my screen while watching a Nightwish Ghost Love Score reaction video and I was like: "OMG! Should I pause it or close and click this one? OMG, what should I do?". Great song, one of the first I heard from them. Love Roy, he's like the male version of Floor.
R.I.P John Pactrick McDonald aka Midinight. I still have photos from the shows I attended and a rare limited 500 edition signed solo cd from Midnights attic.
The song is a story about the life of Elizabeth Báthory, Hungarian form; Báthory Erzsébet, (born August 7, 1560, Nyírbátor, Hungary-died August 21, 1614). The evil that Kahn spoke about was that she was rumored to have murdered hundreds of young servant girls to bathe in their blood to regain/keep her beauty. Her exploits have become part of the Dracula/vampire myths, the seductive and immortal parts. I must admit that I think that Roy Kahn is a rare and awesome singer. His voice introduced me to the Symphonic Metal that is blossoming around the world.

I love Kamelot, I have nothing but love an respect for the current lineup and specially Tommy Karevik who has done a superb job so far, but Roy Khan is simply on an elevated realm for me... I wish he would sing somewhere, I wish he comes back and puts out more music... I really miss his beautiful voice...
Ooooooooh! I'm sooooooo late! Roy Khan is an awesome vocalist, and this is one of my favourite songs from Kamelot with Roy as a lead singer (the live version, though, because, as much as the studio is cool, the live tops it, as is usually the case with metal bands I love, it seems, haha).
Thanks to the person that requested it and thanks for filling the request Beth! And any concert that they play Sailormans Hymn at, I always lose my voice for a day or 3. It's fine, it's worth it to feel it in that moment. I love Kamelot so much!
As much as I know, Roy was sick at that live. That's why his voice is crackly at times and deeper at the low parts. But it makes it even more magnificent. He is an outstanding Vocalist.
Wait, was he really sick? He absolutely NAILED pretty much most of the notes. When he was sick in wacken 2008 you could really truly hear him struggle.
Welp, that was awesome. How have I not heard this band before now? Another great band discovered via reaction video. Thank you again Beth! Powerful song. Roy reminds me a bit of Geoff Tate (Queensryche). Amazing vocals , and Roy owned that stage
I have such fond memories of Khan and his shows. He has such a special place in my heart. During my first show he hopped down and let me duet on "Center of the Universe," life never got that good again. The minute this man gets on stage in front of you, you are transported away for the entire set.
This whole concert was just out of this world, and is easily the best performance I have ever heard!!! Only thing negative is that it could have been a much bigger venue! Roy Khan, you are in my heart forever!!!!!!!
Roy Khan is a GOD! I adore his vocals - he is in a "new" band now called Conception - you should check those out, also. I say "new" because he was with them before he joined Kamelot, he then left Kamelot took a break from music and then went back to Conception. I'm so, so happy he is back in the music scene, I have missed that wonderful voice of his.
He was in Conception before he was in Kamelot. They went on a hiatus while Khan was in Kamelot. Then they revamped years later. So in a sense, they aren't "new" per se. They have a new vibe in comparison to their older material though.
@@randomninja83 that is correct this is Roy's old prog metal band ..they formed in the late 80's.plenty of stuff on youtube of live performances from the early 1990's and full album tracks.he was in his ultimate form back then
For those that are asking "Who is this Roy Khan?" (that is outside and pre-Kamelot) Check out his original band Conception .. Every single album from their debut in 1991 to 1997 .. And then their re-emergence (along with Khan's in almost a decade) in 2018 to present ..
I had a friend who asked me why i wanted my spotify not randomised. It's because Kamelot's albums are build like a story and needs to be listened to in order to get best results.
Candlemass - Bewitched. There's a live version from 1990 with Messiah Marcolin on vocals. Video is VHS quality, but the singing is otherworldly. A Must!
I'm been listening to this live version for over 10 years and I still get chills when he fully opens up and throws weight behind his voice on "Have I found myself, eternity?!" Geoff Tate was my first major vocal influence, but Roy's ability to generate darker tone colors w/ pristine technique has also been a huge inspiration since I found Kamelot in college.
If you liked Roy Khan, check out Conception, his older band... It's much more experimental and vocal-centered, less Power Metal than Kamelot. Last Sunset, Water Confines and The Promiser show his range really well. They recently reunited with him, too!
@theonemav I read an interview with Karevik back in 2011 where he stated he had never had a singing/vocal lesson in his life. So yeah, since Roy Khan had lessons at a young age, Khan's technique would be much better. Still, Karevik has a very nice voice. Hopefully he;s taking lessons now too, at least to help him retain his voice while on the road if nothing else.
if so only with SW ! with Kamelot he;s singing rather safe as he persoanally stated "he needs to keep his b---ls in a closet so he can sing daily" while with SW he gives it all :/ quite dissapointing when you think of how khan gave 10000 percent of himself to kam
Tommy is such a monster of a vocalist, as opposed to most of kamelot fans i actually prefer him to Roy, not saying that he's bad cause his very good ( in a different way) but what tommy has done in the last two albums and specially in Seventh wonder is just amazing, few vocalists have impressed me as much.
There is a massive amount of technique and control behind his performance and he still makes it so emotional and deep. What a beast! We're so lucky he's back with Conception.
You absolutely need to do "The Haunting" next, the live performance with Simone Simons from Epica. Her and Roy are great together.
That and forever live. Would love to see both
The Haunting is probably my second favorite Kamelot song after Prodigal Son.

I love Kamelot, I have nothing but love an respect for the current lineup and specially Tommy Karevik who has done a superb job so far, but Roy Khan is simply on an elevated realm for me... I wish he would sing somewhere, I wish he comes back and puts out more music... I really miss his beautiful voice...
dude he is back for a year, Conception - my dark symphony
I love symphonic metal with all its contrasts. One minute it's beautiful and ethereal, and the next it's raw.
YES YES!!! OMG you did it, for the love of Rhoy KHan, Beth you did react to Elizabeth 1 2 3
The best norwegian vocalist ever
@@randomninja83 that is correct this is Roy's old prog metal band ..they formed in the late 80's.plenty of stuff on youtube of live performances from the early 1990's and full album tracks.he was in his ultimate form back then
For those that are asking "Who is this Roy Khan?" (that is outside and pre-Kamelot)
Check out his original band Conception ..
Every single album from their debut in 1991 to 1997 ..
And then their re-emergence (along with Khan's in almost a decade) in 2018 to present ..
fooser77 🤘🏼👍🏼HELL YAAA
Roy is definitely one of the best ..
That you mentioned "theatrical" and two voices in one ..
Check out Impellitteri doing "Phantom of the Opera."
I had a friend who asked me why i wanted my spotify not randomised. It's because Kamelot's albums are build like a story and needs to be listened to in order to get best results.
Omg Thankyou for reacting to this
One of my favourites
you are an honest woman. i love ya. roy khan can do everything beyond you and i.
Candlemass - Bewitched. There's a live version from 1990 with Messiah Marcolin on vocals. Video is VHS quality, but the singing is otherworldly. A Must!
classic TV director - pans to the bassist during the guitar solo.
I hate them
That's because guitar players don't want their solos copied by anyone else.
I'm been listening to this live version for over 10 years and I still get chills when he fully opens up and throws weight behind his voice on "Have I found myself, eternity?!"
Geoff Tate was my first major vocal influence, but Roy's ability to generate darker tone colors w/ pristine technique has also been a huge inspiration since I found Kamelot in college.
You have many songs singed by Roy Khan to react because he's incredible!!!!
If you liked Roy Khan, check out Conception, his older band... It's much more experimental and vocal-centered, less Power Metal than Kamelot. Last Sunset, Water Confines and The Promiser show his range really well. They recently reunited with him, too!
Oh I always loved Elizabeth - Fall From Grace. *sits down to watch your whole reaction vid*
I'd love to see your take on Tommy Karevik, the singer who replaced him. Very different and somehow similar to Roy.
Jilhoa1 meh his technique is so much worse than Roy.
Both very operatic? Tommy has a higher natural tone, though Roy can get up there when he wants to.
