    I can't speak on the Duramax, never owned one. But, I have owned Dodge/Ram diesels since 1999. I was trading my Chevy Tahoe or Escalade that I use as business truck every few years, never getting close to 100k miles, my previous Dodge trucks had 200-300k miles on them when I traded and still had a good resale value. The extra cost in a diesel isn't worth it for people that are going to trade every 2-3 years with less than 50-60k miles and don't do a lot of towing. Don't know about the duramax but with the Ram diesels, longevity and resale value with higher mileage makes a difference compared to a gasser. I have been thinking about trading my current Tahoe for a High Country 2500 or Denali 2500 with duramax, but hesitant.

    I have the '24 2500 LT Z71 crew cab gasser. I wasn't trying to evade the diesel upcharge, necessarily. It came down to payload (mine is 3,550 lbs., which is around 700-800 lbs. higher than the comparable diesel), as well as avoiding the awful emissions crap plaguing today's diesels. My gooseneck towing capacity is 18,200 lbs., a figure of which I will probably never get close. I don't want the headaches associated with those diesels and am very happy with my decision. I currently tow a 10k GVWR fifth wheel and hardly know it's back there. I am likely to buy a 12k GVWR unit soon and have zero concerns about the setup. JB has a point about elevation, but if you don't spend most of your time in the clouds, this truck is a great HD option.

  • @darens440
    @darens440 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Plenty of good reasons to get the gas truck depending on your use. Oil changes for the diesel will cost you more due to more quarts, more expensive filter. Overall maintenance costs and higher diesel fuel prices can eat your 'savings' right up. There's also plenty of good reasons to get the diesel if you tow a lot.

  • @matthewanderson9912
    @matthewanderson9912 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

    There’s no financial benefit at all at running a diesel today. In a lot of cases they will cost more to operate. The only time they wouldn’t would be if you were just strictly towing with the truck. And even then the mpg difference is not much so depending on fuel cost they still might cost you more. And that’s not counting the diesel option cost.
    But I always say people should buy what they want. You got fanboys on both sides but diesel fanboys are the absolute worst. And a true diesel fanboy would never be satisfied with a gas HD. Some diesel guys think you need a 3500 dually to tow a single axle lawnmower trailer lol.
    The empty performance difference is just not that much. Look at your draggy results. If that would have been a side by side race at the 1/8th mile the diesel would have had about truck length advantage, if that. That’s not much. That’s negligible at best. Sure, towing there would be a difference. But as you said, your L8T even at your elevation held 50 mph towing your old 5th wheel.
    But again I say get what you want. I’m not considering a diesel again until the emissions are made more reliable. I’ll get to see how they are for the next couple years atleast with my buddy’s new 2024 Duramax. And based off his truck you are 100% correct that the fuel mileage has got worse. He’s getting the same mpg as my other buddy’s 2024 L8T and my 2022 L8T.

    Diesels don’t start breaking in until around 12,000 miles. In other words, you won’t see good mileage until then. All my diesels would get 15 MPG until 12k, in which then I would get 19 MPG

    If these engines were equivalent I could understand the comparison. But the diesel has almost 1k lbs of torque, twice as much as the gas. This extra torque makes a big difference off the line, towing, and especially passing other vehicles. I have 37s and a 4inch lift on my 3500 and it feels like a race car with all the diesel torque. The majority of HD trucks sold are diesel and it’s not to save gas money. It’s for the torque needed to handle the weight of a 4 ton vehicle.

      @AkioWasRight 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      A DIY filter and oil for a Cummins 6.7L is nowhere near $250. With a bulk commercial price for oil, I don't even pay 1/3 that for DIY-ing oil changes. If you don't have bulk pricing, a 3 gallon pack of Rotella T6 is only about $70 at Walmart. Filters are more or less the same price with gas vs diesel. So, I have no idea where you're getting $250 from.
      Also, diesels have fuel filters and DEF, but then you don't have other services or issues to contend with, like tune ups.
      Brakes also last longer, much, much longer on HD diesels, particularly the Cummins. When I owned my gas Chevy 2500, I was burning up front pads every 18k-20k miles towing. With my Cummins 6.7L and its exhaust brake, front brakes will go 50k-60k miles easy. Over the life, that's thousands saved just in brakes.
      In the first 65k miles, the combined fuel and maintenance savings was over $8,000, which basically was the payback on the initially diesel investment.

    DPF is a joke ! Using 2 to 4 gals a day of fuel to keep it clean and all the extra DEF - DEF tank EGR coolers and related sensors and not to forget an exhaust restriction !

    There was so much road noise with that diesel, I could barely hear anything that you were saying. That, and a $10,000 premium… You can take the Duramax and shove it.

    Too bad they don’t turbo charge the gas V8’s

      I’d rather have them offer a tune first. Remember that it is de tuned for fleet / longevity.

      @@slaytanic921 What elevation do you drive? A NA engine loses power pretty dramatically as you get further above sea level. In the old days you were supposed to rejet the carb if you took a sea level car long term to higher elevation (every 2000-3000ft). If you didn't it would run rich and foul the plugs well before the 36000 plug replacement.

    I don't know what we're going to have to do with Ben Hardy, maybe relegate him to driving a Subaru the rest of his life.😊

    It's weird to me when people don't understand things and then make stuff up and present it as fact to explain what's going on. "The diesel truck has higher compression so it can run lower rpm" sorry bro you're wrong as hell.
