I know I'm just copying what the video said, but I feel the quote speaks for itself. You can feel the remorse Leon has for Mathias's poor choice engraved in every spoken word.
It is a powerful statement Leon made to oppose what Mathias offered him and proving how he knew that while he hated Walter, he also knew preventing others from suffering like Sara did was all he could do to honor her sacrifice
I always interpreted Mathias gasping and then changing his tone in the end as him realizing that Leon is right but he is too far gone to fully admit it. He has achieve immortality but without his wife, all he really did was ensuring that he will be alone forever. And even though he temporary finds love again with Lisa, he loses her too and then he remains alone for the rest of his alive. That is the true curse of immortality.
Yeah. And in the end, at least even if Lisa helped him some, it reignited his hate for humanity and God, at least until Dracula/Mathias's soul would be reborn as Soma.

@@tek512 To make it worse, I'm pretty sure that Dracula is also indirectly responsible for her death, as Iirc, it was Dracula's minions who manipulated people in order to start the witch trials (the reason why Sypha wanted to stop Dracula in Dracula's Curse).
I was always under the assumption that He, unconsciously wanted her death to happen, think about it, the moment he used the crimson stone, that's the moment he not only became the avatar of hell but also lost his humanity and soul, his ability to choose really became an illusion all in order to fulfill his dark master's wishes.
Fix the character models, aka, fix their faces so they’re more expressive and not emotionless. Also Mathias’s fingers because they look a little weird.
You can just feel how he’s hurt that his friend would refuse his offer after what he went through as well. But it’s easy to see why Leon refused besides how Mathias used him.

He was quite a crafty fellow. "If limited life is God's decree,then I shall defy it." I love how the camera pans around him and he's pointing at the sky. This scene just kicks donkey all around.
If you think about it, Mathias/Dracula is actually pretty sympathetic. He gave up his humanity to spite God for taking his wife, then a few centuries later humanity takes his wifes reincarnation, Lisa, from him. His methods are extreme, but deep down beneath all his anger and hatred, it's his love for his wife that's caused him to do this. Nothing hurts more then losing the one you love with every fiber of your being.
Oh yeah, that bitterness, even if he would loss the meaning to it, is what makes Mathias so dangerous as Dracula. He even showed that hatred for mankind in the redub of Symphony of the Night when he said "Mankind... a cesspit of hatred and lies." when confronted by Richter, given the pain he had gone through again when Lisa died.
True! It´s also so amazing how Death enters the scene and takes you by surprise or shock after Mathias leaves. And then, you even have to fight this powerful and frightening guy when you thought you´d be safe after defeating Walter. Best cutscene by far!

Funny enough, Patrick Seitz, who voices Dio in the dub of the JoJo series, has voiced Mathias as Dracula in Castlevania Judgment, the PSP Rondo of Blood, and the Symphony of the Night redub.

When he watched them talk he knew that he would get so many souls to feed on as long as his new master existed.

I was honestly already disappointed that Walter would be Dracula when I played this game for the first time. So nice he isn´t / wasn´t Dracula. Mathias truly looks and sounds like a worthy Dracula.
There are actually a lot of factors in Alucard's betrayal. One of the most obvious ones is the fact that he is half human. Although he had many dark powers from his father, Alucard received his gentler side from his mother which conflicted with his fathers agenda. Another reason is his mothers dying wish. Alucard was present at his mothers execution which. However, before she died, Lisa asked Alucard not to hate the humans. He betrayed his father for the love of his mother.
Yep. Just like how Dracula snapped at Lisa's death, because he probably remembers what happened to him as Mathias when Elisabetha died, and how he HATED God for "taking" her from him and why he became a vampire.
I wish the Castlevania Netflix series was in parts, with each one focusing on a different member of the Belmont Family. Starting with Leon, and working it’s way down. Or at the very least have a flash back of Dracula where he remembers this scene when Trevor approaches his Castle. Or *Something* more than just “So you must be the Belmont”. I mean, that’s it? No regret in fighting his brother in arm’s lineage? No regret in what he did to Leon and his Beloved all of those centuries ago? So much waisted potential
The Castlevania Netflix series was too concerned with making Dracula a sympathetic character. Showing his backstory would have made that difficult for them.
@@wackyswacky1374 Wouldn't showing the backstory between him and Leon add to the sympathy a man lost the woman who he loved most and in grief went down a very dark path which led to him cursing God out of grief, sadness and anger by becoming a vampire defying Gods decree of limited life. I think people would be sympathetic of a man in grief who made a horrible decision, wishing the man could've been helped through his grief to prevent him from becoming Dracula
I agree 100%. It's even more disappointing that the writers clearly know about the events of Lament of Innocence because they showed a protrait of Leon at the Belmont Hold. Now that we know that there's going to be another Castlevania series on Netflix focusing on Richter, I really do hope that if that show is as successful as the original they will adapt the earliest point in the timeline. Then we can finally have a true origin story for Dracula and the Belmont clan.
For those of you who do not know the story line of this game harkens to the very beginning of all of castlevanie. Mathias is the first and original "Dracula" and this story brings the Belmont clan/Dracula rivalry to fruition.
+Juan Pablo Parada Zelada Walter Bernhart was the lord of that castle and the one who took Leon's fiance, which is why Leon killed him. The Mathias that you see here is the same Dracula that would appear in every subsequent Castlevania game.
One of my favorite CV scenes. The end of an "old friendship"and beginning of a epic rivalry. Go Mathias as you once said. Mathias was so smart planning all this. Maybe he'll plan something this epic in the battle of 1999 CV game. Fingers crossed. You can feel the hurt and anger in Mathias' voice when he speaks of being betrayed by God. Props to Crispin Freeman for pulling it off.
You're right. When I first played the game and read the intro--"It was the death of his beloved wife Elisabetha." That was the name of Dracula's wife in the the movie Bram Stoker's Dracula. Mathias' facial features do resemble Alucard or rather Alucard's facial features resemble Mathias'.
Like holy balls the part where Mathias says: "If limited life... etc." and the camera goes all 360° on him is so freaking epic and goes so well with the music and voice acting and everything! Say what you want about the game itself but the cutscenes and voice acting are so good! There are glorious scenes like this but also quiet ones like the dialogues with Rinaldo without music. They all give the game a very atmospheric vibe.
The most awesome scene in the entire game. From the writing, to the music, to the incredible voice acting despite the usual localization problems. It's epic, and made the entire game worth playing just to get a glimpse of Dracula's origin of his evil motives.
mathias history is undoubtedly inspired on the original bram stoker's nobel. who would think that belmonts and dracula had such a close bond as comrades in their past. but bloodlines can't be ignored forever
Thank you, finally someone who gets it. Akumajou Dracula has this unique charm because it's Japanese. It is European Mythology from the Japanese view which gives it both a familiar yet exotic flavour.
Actually yes, Castlevania was based on Bram Stokers novel. In fact the novel is considered part of the Castlevania canon as well. Quincy Morris, as well as his son John and grandson Jonathan are actually cousins to the Belmont family.
Yes, Simon was the first Belont featured in Castlevania games, but in the IGA's ideal timeline, Leon (who lived in the 11th century) was the first Belmont to wield the Vampire Killer and the foundator of the Belmont clan as Vampire Hunters. and yes, Simon was Juste's grandfather, and Juste was Richter's grandfather =P
Before I beat this game for the first time, I actually thought the "King who wields the Crimson Stone" was going to be Rinaldo...if that happened instead of Mathias, I would've thought it was hilarious!
The LoS trilogy takes place in an alternate universe. It has nothing to do with the main series storylines. Just like DC has tons of different stories that take place in alternate universes. Not too difficult to figure out.

You know what's even more tragic and ironic about Mathias's crusade? Is that he'll never reach what he ever wanted - his wives. If he keeps coming back, defeat after defeat - Even when he was melancholic losing to Alucard, it means his wives are nowhere to be found in hell, and went to heaven. A place he'll never ever reach because of the atrocities and blasphemy he committed against God and the world. So all it is left for him is burn in hell, live on a desolated earth or be stuck in the Eclipse forever, to never reach peace. Like Leon said, it's nothing but emptiness.

Pretty much the story of how Mathias changed his name to Vlad Tepes and fell in love with a human named Lisa. Then they had a son Adrian Tepes, Alucard. During the time between 1100-1400, Vlad was only cursing God but not bringing any real harm to anyone but himself. It wasn't until the time before Dracula's Curse that he began a hatred for humans as they executed his wife for false allegations of being a witch. That was when he revealed himself to the world as Dracula and laid waste to Europe.
Everyone gives such sub par performances in this game, than Crispin Freeman shows up and gives an amazing performance that blows everyone else out of the water.

Wish we got a 3D collection of this, Curse of Darkness, & Legacy of Darkness. Because so far we got the classic collection, containing the original NES, Simon’s Quest, Dracula’s Curse, The Adventure, Belmont’s Revenge, Kid Dracula, Super Castlevania IV, & Bloodlines. The one that has Rondo of Blood, & Symphony of the Night. & last the Advance collection which has Circle of Moon, Harmony of Dissonance, Aria of Sorrow, & Dracula X Chronicles. While we yet to get remaster versions of the DS Trilogy.

He was just a means to an end. Mathias needed the soul of a powerful vampire. Using the crimson stone to become a vampire made him so pure that he became the King of all vampires. Different from being bitten and turned by one. Almost like he was born as one. Making his powers all the more potent, especially with the crimson stone and he possibly still has the ebony stone as well. He's got stacks and stacks of buffs.
Yes, as we saw in the game n_n (well, I read the story and watch the cutscenes). Leon was the first to wield the Vampire Killer, Rinaldo just give Leon a whip with magical-alchemical properties, but Leon and Rinaldo make the whip Holy using Alchemy to fuse Sara's soul with the whip, making the Vampire Killer this way. n_n
Mathias shares my pain that i have endured for many centuries abandon by God to become the Prince Of Darkness and wage war against him and humanity. Marie my own wife killed by my hands i will forever curse God for what he has done to me.

Although he is a very tragic and sympathetic character; Mathias is still a real bastard. He ultimately used Leon to obtain Walter’s soul to become the most powerful vampire ever: which involved the death/sacrifice of Sara. To try and equate it to the loss of his wife Elizabetha was just Mathias trying to justify his own actions even though it doesn’t erase the fact he used Leon as his own pawn. Of course he still had a soft spot for Leon as a close friend and ally, thus offering him a chance to become a vampire too. When Leon naturally refused, Mathias then sic’d Death on him. It was a Join or Die type offer. That is why Mathias, despite being a tragic character later on as Dracula, is still rightfully the true villain of this particular Castlevania game.
Konami surely did a wonderful job at showing how much a selfish fuck Mathias was. The plot twists of Castlevania Lament of Innocence are comparible to the works of literary writing legends such as William Shakespeare and Homer. The level unsuspecting deception was of a very, very high grade. I love Mathias because of how dangerous he was, even when he was human.
I'm with you 100%. I just felt that the ending of this game didn't do Leon any justice. He just walks away from the castle. No dialogue.Nothing. He could've said something--"Sara,my beloved,your wish is granted." I think the epilogue of LoI ruins any future sequel--"Mathias and the Belmonts will not meet for hundreds of years." Damn IGA. I would love to see a sequel to this game and then the Battle of 1999. Maybe if a sequel to LoI is made,we can a little more backstory on the characters.
But, that is the reason why Lords of Shadows pretty much failed in Japan. That is why, instead of the intended reboot, LoS is now it's own side-series, with the main series left intact.

Vanishing Stone Was pretty Nice that Dracula Wasn't The First Vampire
There are actually a lot of factors in Alucard's betrayal. One of the most obvious ones is the fact that he is half human. Although he had many dark powers from his father, Alucard received his gentler side from his mother which conflicted with his fathers agenda. Another reason is his mothers dying wish. Alucard was present at his mothers execution which. However, before she died, Lisa asked Alucard not to hate the humans. He betrayed his father for the love of his mother.
Yep. Just like how Dracula snapped at Lisa's death, because he probably remembers what happened to him as Mathias when Elisabetha died, and how he HATED God for "taking" her from him and why he became a vampire.

I wish the Castlevania Netflix series was in parts, with each one focusing on a different member of the Belmont Family. Starting with Leon, and working it’s way down. Or at the very least have a flash back of Dracula where he remembers this scene when Trevor approaches his Castle. Or *Something* more than just “So you must be the Belmont”. I mean, that’s it? No regret in fighting his brother in arm’s lineage? No regret in what he did to Leon and his Beloved all of those centuries ago? So much waisted potential

The Castlevania Netflix series was too concerned with making Dracula a sympathetic character. Showing his backstory would have made that difficult for them.
@@wackyswacky1374 Wouldn't showing the backstory between him and Leon add to the sympathy a man lost the woman who he loved most and in grief went down a very dark path which led to him cursing God out of grief, sadness and anger by becoming a vampire defying Gods decree of limited life.
I think people would be sympathetic of a man in grief who made a horrible decision, wishing the man could've been helped through his grief to prevent him from becoming Dracula
I agree 100%. It's even more disappointing that the writers clearly know about the events of Lament of Innocence because they showed a protrait of Leon at the Belmont Hold. Now that we know that there's going to be another Castlevania series on Netflix focusing on Richter, I really do hope that if that show is as successful as the original they will adapt the earliest point in the timeline. Then we can finally have a true origin story for Dracula and the Belmont clan.
For those of you who do not know the story line of this game harkens to the very beginning of all of castlevanie. Mathias is the first and original "Dracula" and this story brings the Belmont clan/Dracula rivalry to fruition.

+Juan Pablo Parada Zelada Walter Bernhart was the lord of that castle and the one who took Leon's fiance, which is why Leon killed him.
The Mathias that you see here is the same Dracula that would appear in every subsequent Castlevania game.

One of my favorite CV scenes. The end of an "old friendship"and beginning of a epic rivalry. Go Mathias as you once said. Mathias was so smart planning all this. Maybe he'll plan something this epic in the battle of 1999 CV game. Fingers crossed. You can feel the hurt and anger in Mathias' voice when he speaks of being betrayed by God. Props to Crispin Freeman for pulling it off.

You're right. When I first played the game and read the intro--"It was the death of his beloved wife Elisabetha." That was the name of Dracula's wife in the the movie Bram Stoker's Dracula. Mathias' facial features do resemble Alucard or rather Alucard's facial features resemble Mathias'.

Like holy balls the part where Mathias says: "If limited life... etc." and the camera goes all 360° on him is so freaking epic and goes so well with the music and voice acting and everything!
Say what you want about the game itself but the cutscenes and voice acting are so good! There are glorious scenes like this but also quiet ones like the dialogues with Rinaldo without music. They all give the game a very atmospheric vibe.

The most awesome scene in the entire game. From the writing, to the music, to the incredible voice acting despite the usual localization problems. It's epic, and made the entire game worth playing just to get a glimpse of Dracula's origin of his evil motives.

Thank you, finally someone who gets it. Akumajou Dracula has this unique charm because it's Japanese. It is European Mythology from the Japanese view which gives it both a familiar yet exotic flavour.

Actually yes, Castlevania was based on Bram Stokers novel. In fact the novel is considered part of the Castlevania canon as well. Quincy Morris, as well as his son John and grandson Jonathan are actually cousins to the Belmont family.
Yes, Simon was the first Belont featured in Castlevania games, but in the IGA's ideal timeline, Leon (who lived in the 11th century) was the first Belmont to wield the Vampire Killer and the foundator of the Belmont clan as Vampire Hunters.
and yes, Simon was Juste's grandfather, and Juste was Richter's grandfather =P
Before I beat this game for the first time, I actually thought the "King who wields the Crimson Stone" was going to be Rinaldo...if that happened instead of Mathias, I would've thought it was hilarious!

The whole Lords of Shadow series is a completely different continuity. None of the other Castlevania games are part of it.
The LoS trilogy takes place in an alternate universe. It has nothing to do with the main series storylines.
Just like DC has tons of different stories that take place in alternate universes. Not too difficult to figure out.

Indeed (About Mathias being passionate about Elisabetha). But don't forget, Leon was also passionate about his beloved Sara too. He even promised her that he will prevent the fate that Sara had suffered from a vampire.
You know what's even more tragic and ironic about Mathias's crusade?
Is that he'll never reach what he ever wanted - his wives.
If he keeps coming back, defeat after defeat - Even when he was melancholic losing to Alucard, it means his wives are nowhere to be found in hell, and went to heaven.
A place he'll never ever reach because of the atrocities and blasphemy he committed against God and the world. So all it is left for him is burn in hell, live on a desolated earth or be stuck in the Eclipse forever, to never reach peace.

Pretty much the story of how Mathias changed his name to Vlad Tepes and fell in love with a human named Lisa. Then they had a son Adrian Tepes, Alucard. During the time between 1100-1400, Vlad was only cursing God but not bringing any real harm to anyone but himself. It wasn't until the time before Dracula's Curse that he began a hatred for humans as they executed his wife for false allegations of being a witch. That was when he revealed himself to the world as Dracula and laid waste to Europe.

Everyone gives such sub par performances in this game, than Crispin Freeman shows up and gives an amazing performance that blows everyone else out of the water.

Wish we got a 3D collection of this, Curse of Darkness, & Legacy of Darkness. Because so far we got the classic collection, containing the original NES, Simon’s Quest, Dracula’s Curse, The Adventure, Belmont’s Revenge, Kid Dracula, Super Castlevania IV, & Bloodlines. The one that has Rondo of Blood, & Symphony of the Night. & last the Advance collection which has Circle of Moon, Harmony of Dissonance, Aria of Sorrow, & Dracula X Chronicles. While we yet to get remaster versions of the DS Trilogy.

He was just a means to an end. Mathias needed the soul of a powerful vampire. Using the crimson stone to become a vampire made him so pure that he became the King of all vampires. Different from being bitten and turned by one. Almost like he was born as one. Making his powers all the more potent, especially with the crimson stone and he possibly still has the ebony stone as well. He's got stacks and stacks of buffs.

Leon was the first to wield the Vampire Killer, Rinaldo just give Leon a whip with magical-alchemical properties, but Leon and Rinaldo make the whip Holy using Alchemy to fuse Sara's soul with the whip, making the Vampire Killer this way. n_n

Although he is a very tragic and sympathetic character; Mathias is still a real bastard.
He ultimately used Leon to obtain Walter’s soul to become the most powerful vampire ever: which involved the death/sacrifice of Sara. To try and equate it to the loss of his wife Elizabetha was just Mathias trying to justify his own actions even though it doesn’t erase the fact he used Leon as his own pawn.
Of course he still had a soft spot for Leon as a close friend and ally, thus offering him a chance to become a vampire too. When Leon naturally refused, Mathias then sic’d Death on him. It was a Join or Die type offer.
That is why Mathias, despite being a tragic character later on as Dracula, is still rightfully the true villain of this particular Castlevania game.

I'm with you 100%. I just felt that the ending of this game didn't do Leon any justice. He just walks away from the castle. No dialogue.Nothing. He could've said something--"Sara,my beloved,your wish is granted." I think the epilogue of LoI ruins any future sequel--"Mathias and the Belmonts will not meet for hundreds of years." Damn IGA. I would love to see a sequel to this game and then the Battle of 1999. Maybe if a sequel to LoI is made,we can a little more backstory on the characters.
I will now call Mathias, Hector... How startling a realization it is.
But, that is the reason why Lords of Shadows pretty much failed in Japan. That is why, instead of the intended reboot, LoS is now it's own side-series, with the main series left intact.
