Thank you, Martin and Micky! Honestly speaking, I've started buying knives since have watched BK2 of your videos. You know I got Mora heavy duty with Carbon steel with rust already now. And another one from Marble which says warns and contains the cause of cancer! I won't use this knive for food processing, only for splitting woods or something. But I like to learn how to sharpen my knives through inexpesive one first , instead of messing up good expensive one. Anyhow, I know what you say and look up the site you've showed me. Keep up great work, wait for your next video!
I know this is an old comment but I had a similar issue with a knife package saying stuff about cancer. Basically its just because the blade contains chromium and parts that are brass contain lead its safe to carry and use for food it is just a government stipulation for the environment and since knives contain the substances which aren't going to cause harm unless you dumped tonnes of knives in a waterway or something the now have to write that on packaging . As far as the mora yeah its a pain you need to oil carbon knives, all my newer knives are Elmax or some other kind of stainless.
I find that my A2 Bark River stains very similar to 1095. However, my CPM3V Survive! knife went on a 4 hour float trip with me, in and out of the water a few times, and had some tiny little rust spots at the end of the day. They all wiped off with no permanent mark though.

I have the same experience with my Barkies in A2 vs 3V. On paper there should not be a huge difference in terms of corrosion resistance but in practice the difference is substantial.
I haven't bought expensive knives yet, and definetely I compare A2 with CPM-3V. Because I'm living in Japan and so humid. Thanks! But I like A2...and good price!
I don't recommend any steel that rusts if you live in a humid environment. What matters is the chrome content. You need at least 12% chrome content for a knife to be semi stainless (like D2). Around 18% chrome is full stainless (440). Zknives.com has the charts for all steels. European knife companies generally make all good stainless steel knives. With American companies you have to be more careful. Some of them have a big mouth and like to sell you knives made from cheap, rusty steel but they want to charge a premium price.
Larrin Thomas of Knife Steel Nerds has done ratings on corrosion resistance of pretty much all knife steels. If you look up knife steel nerds steel ratings you should find it.
high polish blade the scratches are to small for vater and dirt to hide in and rust. try to do the test on a 200grit satin finish blade. and if you live near the sea you also have a salt humidity problem for the 3v. i live in norway and if i dont oil mine 3v knives up they will rust!
Thanks for the video. More testing and comparison videos for sure 👍🏽 we would all appreciate that! For example: Purchasing 3V vs. A2 and maintenance over time. Is it worth the extra $€£? Things like that. Thanks guys... 🤘🏽

But, Yeah, I appricated that little test. I think you should compare the 3V with the D2 a semi stainless similar to 3V, Right ?
+Dutch Bushcraft Knives Great vid!, ive got an interesting one for you, cpm-3v peters heat-treat (im not going to mention the manufacturer) stripping some thistles for our horses, deep pits in the blade edge within 5 minutes! Super fast electrolytic/galvanic reaction going on, but only in certain spots!.Infi nothing, sk-5(hultafors carbon) uhb20c (mora carbon) black patina but no pitting, 5150 and 1095 carbon same just patina with no pitting. Best protectant for your knife: Flitz Rifle, Gun, and Knife wax. Available on Amazon. Best anti-corrosion oil, in my (and many other's) experience: Corrosion X. The strongest and stickiest version is the "Marine" variant.
I tried to acid etch a 3V blade recently, wouldn't touch it. Very surprised. If I did cycles of acid bath, extended contact w/ air, acid bath, extended contact w/ air, I might be able to get a nice antique patina to form.
Colson Customs Would you please tell me what is the difference between A2 and D2? nothing to do with the vid but I ended up here looking for the answer and I can't find it. Thanks man I am new to all this.
hi guys, i don't know your experience with COLD steel , but lately they seem to realize that there are other steals than AUS-8 or san mai (they gonna sue i used the word), anyway what do you make of their cpm3V on the S1... i meant SRK?
every since they have started to use 3V i'm considering buying one again. before they were jsut fancy toys to me but now they seem to take things more seriously.
Hey, I'm purchasing a bark river in the new year and am stuck deciding between the 3V and S35VN. Have you any experience with S35VN, and is it really worth the extra expenditure?
Hi guys! That was a very good test, but may I ask you something? How do you think CPM-3V would have behaved if the one hour test had been done with sea water or a light acid (for instance tomato juice)? Best regards!
don't worry, I oil my wooden handles often so they can handle a bit of rain. The A2 will need some polishing but nothing too serious. I'm planning on more comparisons in corrosion resistance. take care! (btw. I answered your private message few days ago)
Aight but how do you take care of it? I'm used too super stainless steels like s30v so. I don't even have any of the oils or other stuff I hear people use. I'm planning to get a 3v knife, any tips on the correct day to day care for it?
this may be a dumb question but is stainless steel not as strong as these other steels ? are there some good stainless bushcraft knives ? and i think you guys should do a video on how to set up camp. like where do you cut your wood when you dont have a tree stump or a table and how do you oil knives and clean them so they dont rust ?
Hey Frank, On the internet some people will still tell you that stainless knives won't hold an edge. This is very old knowledge but these days there are some very very good stainless steels around. Actually a lot of the most premium steels are stainless at the moment. If you have good sharpening tools you wont notice the difference between a carbon steel and a stainless steel. Chromium can make a knife a bit more brittle (prone to chipping) but you shouldn't worry about it. here are some decent to amazing stainless steels VG-10 CoS CPM 154 S30V Elmax M390 Cowry-X ZDP-189 I almost never use oil on my knives. I always keep them dry though but I don't really like knives that stain easily. CPM-3V is not stainless but it doesn't stain the quick. Most of my knives are stainless though.
Certain American knife manufacturers have been spreading the myth in knife forums that carbon steel knives are superior.... Reason they do this: 1) Carbon steel is MUCH cheaper = more profit. 2) Carbon steel is much easier to heat treat = Less skill needed... This myth is all about to benefit these manufacturers, NOT the consumer. With the right skill + precise workmanship, stainless steel knives are very good.
How about make a Corrosion resistance - Stain Test on O1 and A2? Maybe Mora carbon too, a lot people say A2 is more Corrosion resistance than O1...and carbon steel,
mister smith heat at cup of coffee and let the blade sit for a few hours. patina looks awesome and helps with the rust issue. It does wear off with use but coffee is cheap enough. The vinegar or lemon just turns grey. I've done it with my hunting knife, fox river in a2 and couldn't be happier with it
At 4.75-5.50% chromium content in the A2 vs 7.50% in the 3V it will never win in the corrosion resistance test. It seems odd that there's not much price differential in BRK's when it comes to the 'better' steels. Have you had any experience with CPM20CV? I've got two BRK Essentials in that steel and have found it to be an excellent all around blade steel.
Hey mate, I knew it wouldn't win but it's good to see how much difference it can make. Lately I read that heat treatment also has impact on corrosion resistance. Depending on the heat treat the same steel can be more or less stain resistant. I own M390 steel which is the same as CPM20CV I believe. I haven't spent enough time with it to make a definite conclusion but my first impressions are really good. It's kinda hard to sharpen but it keeps a really good edge. On paper even longer than elmax. My m390 lionsteel M4 makes a beast of a knife. From what I've experienced so far the m390/CPM20CV is an incredible steel. Stay sharp
Dutch Bushcraft Knives I have an M390 Benchmade and it might be the sharpest blade I own. On par with a Moritaka Japanese gyuoto, both of which can get well beyond razor sharp. Viciously sharp. I'd like to use M390 in a run of CNC blades.
Rust equals: More Toughness, Robust blade, Less likely for the edge to chip. No Rust equals: More edge retention, However edge may chip. Also, the more advanced the steel is, the more skilled the guy who does the heat treatment should be, which means, you have more chances to get a better heat treated blade, if the steel is older. So, if you go for high end steels, go with custom makers, otherwise, stick to common steels like A2 , Carbon V, 1095, 52100, 12C27 etc.
I would love to see more tests like this.
