In Columbo's world, it's perfectly okay to grab a free meal or a snack, courtesy of a murder suspect. He does this all of the time, whether a full meal, as seen here, or a bagel, some caviar, or cheese as seen in other episodes. But when he's meeting at a restaurant with non-suspects to obtain information, he insists on billing his department.

It's one of his sly traits. He uses it as a way to antagonise the suspects.
If you're in his sights, he does everything he can to rile you up, but if he thinks you're innocent, he's the kindest, most considerate detective you'll ever meet.

If it is the other person, it would be considered a gift which at that level would be illegal for him to accept. If it at the cities expense, it would be rejected as too extravagant. If it is at his own expense, he would be broke since he said himself that he made about $15,000/year. Just one of those details he was famous for noticing.

Did I hear that right. Columbo orders hollandaise sauce with his Newyork steak! And he did not ask for ketchup. But of cause, he is not american, he is italian. Thats explains it.

Oh, just one more thing... This is a weird restaurant - one where you enter and descend to the dining room? Unless this is one of those crypt restaurants they have in London, I think they just grabbed the nearest mansion set and stuck some tables in there. What do you think, sir?

You can come across architecture like this in many buildings that are built into a hillside or other incline. The ground floor of the entrance, can be the second or third floor for the back of the building

Dabney Colemann is or was a great actor. In this episode he was the killer. But every time Colombo comes with some theory's why it could not be the mann, the police already have in costedy, he turned Columbo down.

Ah the arrogance. He talks to Columbo like he was the boss. He congratulates him for the report and he tells him to go by the book and not make a stupid mistake that will destroy the case. How can you talk to anybody like that? And he cuts him off every time he tries to finish an idea.
