I like how earnest Columbo is about learning things he doesn't know about. Asking simple questions about if things can or can't be done.
Yep, this is one of the biggest reasons I never did very well in school, I was always very afraid of asking questions because I didn't want to look like an idiot, now I wish I asked more questions because you never learn if you never ask questions and if you never learn then your job options become very slim. Honestly, I didn't really learn anything in math classes from 7th grade onward because I never asked questions, if I didn't understand the questions on a paper or a test that was given to me I either just wrote down random numbers or left the questions blank. I only excelled academically in reading, writing and history because I was naturally good at those subjects but science and math was all guess work to me because I was afraid to admit to the teachers that I didn't understand what I was "being taught".

The speed tech was like "Dang this is the most fun I've had in the job...ever!"
When I first saw this episode in the early 2000's something did not look quite right to me about that picture on the speeding ticket. I couldn't put my finger on it until Columbo discovered it was somebody else wearing a photograph of the lawyers face to disguise their own. Columbo strongly suspected the lawyer was the killer and since he couldn't be in two places at the same time, Columbo decided to look more closely at the photo on the speeding ticket.
How does Hugh's "partner" put on a mask and speed in Pasadena to provide an alibi when she did not even know at time he committed the murder? She suspects afterwords. Only explanation would be she was asked to do it prior to the murder, for which she would have said, "What the fuck do you want me to do that for!!"
@@jeffzest8393. That does seem to be a goof on the part of the screenwriters who wrote this episode. On the other hand just after the murder she accuses him directly of being the murderer and of using her without her knowledge to help him commit it. She said to him "Ever since you borrowed my car and sent me out on that research assignment I have been trying to figure out why, now I know why" What was that 'research assignment' he sent her out on, did it include her pretending to be him driving in Pasadena and getting a speed ticket at a specific time?
OK, would have to watch again, but with her saying those words she apparently did it prior to the murder without questioning his sanity. Like what the fuck do you want me to do that for?!
She only worked for him so maybe she wouldn't if she wanted to keep her job. In any case the real evidence that sealed the lawyers fate was the berries that Columbo found under the windshield of the car he borrowed from her to drive to where he stole the gardeners truck and drive to the beach house to commit the murder. Apparently according to the episode those particular berries could only have dropped on the car if it was parked on a specific street at that time of year, thereby placing him where the truck was stolen from and the scene of the murder.

Correct. It's those high bell-like sounds from the keyboard. It is VERY likely a Yamaha DX-7 digital synthesizer, which came out in 1983 and was all the rage for at least 10 years.

The flaw in this gotcha is that the attempted alibi depicted could not actually be done in real life. For Trish (Shera Danese) to substitute for Hugh (Dabney Coleman) in the Mercedes, she/he could not get away with just making tiny cutouts to see through to be able to safely drive at a high speed. And sufficiently large-enough cutouts would be immediately visible in the blowup--far more visible and obvious than Columbo's far more subtle discovery. Notably, this episode was written by Billy Woodfield, a well-known photographer at the time.
Do the traffic cops normally blow-up pictures of drivers faces photographed by speed cameras? The traffic police would take it for granted it was Hugh Creighton driving and issue him with a fine. It was only discovered by chance by Columbo's persistence to get the picture blown-up and examined more closely because he suspected Hugh was actually committing murder at the time, and his female partner was trying to provide him with an alibi.

I was just at the DMV yesterday (to get a copy of my car's title), and I can testify to the crowds there--though to be more accurate, the people there were mostly seated, with some standing to the side. All were waiting patiently, though.
I’m in Philly. And anyone butting in line like he did would not only get an earful of complaints, it would get physical real fast. He’d of had to show that badge way before he got to the counter. :-)

Great plot, great acting. Problem, cameras were low resolution and the blowup would be of very poor quality, especially in 1991.
Its not a digital ( low res ) camera! Blow ups of an „analog“ camera had a naturally high res (of the silver ions) in order to get a high res. blow up photo. We know that from the sixties moon photography (an older photography technic)

Magnetic tape was the way to go when you needed to store large amounts of information at the time. Technically still is today. Bigger problem is the computer wouldn’t have been able to render that quickly.

She mentions it at the end, she realises the "research" assignment he gave her was to create his alibi. I'm not sure what exactly he claimed to be researching, but it is explained that he'd asked her to do this as part of her work duties and she unwittingly agreed.

Yeah but would you genuinely have thought of the conditions when planning such an alibi? You'd assume a ticket would be enough. Not everyone is a Columbo. Besides. What if the day your accomplice does it and it rains? Or its overcast? Now you have a shadow that shouldn't be there? There is always always a tell with a murder and that's why Frank pulls.those.tiny threads because it's the tiny threads that pull the whole garment apart.

This is from 'To murder a Rockstar' (1991) but the alibi doesn't make sense the murderers partner drove his car wearing a mask to get a speeding ticket on the day of the murder but the day after the body was found she doesn't seem to know anything about the murder?

Maybe it’s me, but there was no need to look for shades under the noses, because there’s a shade underneath the hat of the “killer”, but not under his nose, all in one picture.
A good show, but no one could have warn that mask with no eye holes and drove a car. Even if there were little eye holes in the mask, the driver would have zero peripheral vision.
That's not important. They only needed to wear it while being captured by a speeding camera. If they know where one is, they only wear the mask on that road.
@@EdgieAlias correct. if I recall correctly that's exactly what she does. She gets to the area of the camera. Stops. Puts on the disguise floors it then pulls over.

Columbo was tightfisted (a police lieutnant's salary was 23000 $ a year in the early 70s, which is a very high standard of life),bad dressed ,his favorite meal was Chili con carne, was driving an old french car , had an ugly dog and this is strange for an Italian who is supposed to be elegant and have good taste for everything.
