    I work with homeless, including "feral" homeless, and yes, they stink. Some haven't changed their clothes in years by the time they come to me. Even after they shower and their clothes are washed, they still stink. It is amazing how many different kinds of stink come off of these people. Everything from strong musk to open-intestine-dead animal stink. Believe me, you do NOT want to give up on bathing regularly if at all possible.

    Last year I was living in an apartment, and we got mold on our bathroom ceiling. It was that really dangerous black mold and was hard to breathe through. So basically, I couldn't shower. I still washed my armpits and shit. But I couldn't wash my face or hair. After a week my hair had no oil and my face was in better condition than it ever had been when I washed it. Some things really don't need hardcore washing.

    • @LeDubKitty
      @LeDubKitty 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      by "and shit" I meant the areas that NEEDED washing. before anyone takes that literal.

    • @LeDubKitty

      *****
      No... because the mold was coming from a leak above my apartment. Plus it wasn't my job, and the apartment manager wouldn't fix it.
      He had to gut the whole ceiling. But I see where you're coming from, if it was that easy. Well ok Im short af but it would have gotten cleaned somehow xD

      I've had a sever mould issue aswell actually so I know where your coming from. If the mould has gotten into the wall all the scrubbing in the world won't do shit, it's just going to keep coming back anyways.
      I consider myself clean, hygenic, I wash daily yada yada but I'm not some over hyped clean freak. I get sick less than anybody I know and my skin is pretty much perfect compared to some people I know that go over the top.
      Anybody that say's putting weird ass chemicals on your skin - (Chemicals that the majority of the population consider safe without even checking....) - are probably atleast partially damaged in the mental faculty department.
      It's like living in a hospitals isolation room from the day your born and then emerging into the world when your 18. NO IMMUNE SYSTEM.
      Cleaning dirt is one thing, turning yourself into a PH neutral with no bodily defence is something else entierly.
      One more thing, Acne (spots in general) are caused by oil and blocked out pores, such as the oil that is produced by the body for the skin and hair, knowing your skin and hair is perfect even though theres been a a lack of soap should tell you some of the qualities of certain "self cleaning" products.

    • @LeDubKitty
      @LeDubKitty 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dean F
      If I wash my face with 99% of cleaning products within 30 minutes there's so much oil it leaks into my eyes and burns them. Then eventually my skin gets extremely rough and hard.
      I exfoliate with one face product when there's some serious build up, but other than that I just wash with a wash cloth and water. Still haven't found what truly works for me, but it isn't face wash anymore.

    • @u0aol1
      @u0aol1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a big part of the chemical reactions happening within the pores, the skin then dries out because it's trying to counter act the chemical changes and that's why it gets rough and hard. Also if you have any allregies to any of the chemicals within the products themselves you could end up with mild chemical burns, leaving your skin dry, rough and painful.
      Water and a towel does it for my face alright, I use a slightly acidic shower soap and a pretty basic hair product and I'm clean and healthy.
      This whole "Beauty Regime" Is just another thing that is pushed so you dip into your pocket for the papers, much like a lot of other crap we buy in our apparantly modern society

    People have gone absolutely nuts on the hygiene issue. Hair does not need to be washed every day. Once or twice a week will more than suffice. Unless you are a manual laborer, you do not need to shower every day. You need to shower when you need a shower. A quick daily wash up of your upper body and crotch area is nice and a shower two or three times a week should suffice for most people.

    • @SSanf
      @SSanf 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheBayley93
      There is zero heath reason to wash every day unless you do some kind of work where you are exposed to a lot of bacteria such as in fecal matter if you are working on a farm or if you contact a lot of strangers in your work. You already have a certain amount of immunity to the environment you are in on a steady basis. C'mon don't be so compulsive. Actually, truth be told, I think most people with common sense agree with me. Wash when you are dirty or have been exposed to a lot of new sources of bacteria and viruses.
      And, BTW. a normally healthy human body is no more nasty than is the body of a cat or any other animal unless it has been washed, deodorized, perfumed and primped. Since you seem to think without those measures, humans are nasty. You must think the majority of all humans are nasty since they either can't, due to circumstances, or won't do as you do. How sad to view humanity that way.
      There are 6 thumbs up, now.
      There...Now, you have the permission your mother apparently never gave you.

      You should give rainwater a try when it comes to washing your hair. It is soft water and as long as you don't live next to a busy highway or factory with lots of toxins, you should be fine. Just put a tub outside when it rains and use that.

    I stopped showering for 2 weeks, here are the results:
    First day, good.
    Second day: Good
    Third day: good
    Fourth day : oh god
    Fifth day: make it stop
    Sixth day: FUCK
    Seventh day: Not so bad.
    Eighth day: Good
    and so on. My hair, usually soft, started clumping into giant strands and stuck together in a neutral way.

    I'm gonna step up here and say that you probably weren't nose-blind. I suffer with depression, and one of my biggest things is being able to keep myself clean. I'm not proud of it (at ALL) but I basically only shower about once a month. And I was talking with my roommate the other day (after I showered) about how every time I do, I freaking REEK afterward. Like, I smell worse the day I've had a shower, while wearing deodorant, than I do two weeks after having showered on a day that I forgot deodorant. And I know it's not that I get used to it, because I literally never have anyone tell me that I stink. I've actually had friends I haven't seen in a while be like, "mm you smell nice" and I'm going "dude. I haven't showered in two weeks." They literally can't tell.
    Also it's pronounced "sluffing"

    • @mandypants9936

      I don't shower everyday either, for other reasons. I don't use normal deodorant also. And I ALWAYS SMELL WORSE the day of or after I showered or bathed.. I use a crystal deodorant and a natural deodorant spray I make with oils like tea tree and mint and lavender and such..
      But I have to wash my hands like a maniac.

    Pretty much everything you've said is spot on. There is a small movement in the United States, where people have given up using soap and bathe once or twice a week, do not wash their hands or hair, and brush their teeth with twigs instead of toothbrushes and toothpaste.
    These people, after having gotten over the curve, believe they are fine in about a month or so. They notice their hair has achieved a kind of equilibrium between dryness and oiliness, their bodies do not smell as much, if at all, and their skin seems to clear up. They have taken to the internet to share their stories, claiming triumph over the cultural norms in favor of returning to a state of natural equilibrium.
    The problem with this is, there really is not a state of natural equilibrium. These individuals are walking infections. Their bodies have not actually achieved an equilibrium between good and bad bacteria. Most studies find that their bodies are dirtier, they do have a pungent body odor that they seem to have "gotten used to", and their hair isn't actually healthier than someone who washes their hair, but in fact, their hair has settled into an oily state.
    Many of the articles individuals post online regarding how much better they feel without soap or shampoo, are not substantiated by science. They're merely anecdotal. It's not only irresponsible to forgo daily hygiene, it's dangerous for yourself and for people around you. Take care of yourself. You'll feel better. You'll look better. Those around you will thank you for your efforts.

    i caught scabies once at a nursing home i was in. this other nursing home was shut down until it was cleaned due to bed bugs, c dif, e coli, MRSA, and scabies. their residents were shipped to other facilities, one of which was mine. the aides were not told which of the new people they needed to "suit up" for (hair bonnet, goggles, gown, gloves of course, booties) and make damn sure they followed the normal proper protocol when going from patient to patient. nope, none of it was done. i was the difficult patient because i insisted on hand washing with soap before they touched me, sometimes while they worked on me, and after. wore that lab coat and drug it over 10 other people? ditch it. turn your back to, reach over, or not properlly set up your sterile field? it's not sterile now. and yes, i'm watching how you dawn the gloves. i nearly died from c dif, 3 times from e coli, 3 times from MRSA, 1 from VRE, 3 times having a uti that went septic and the admin wouldn't ok calling the squad until the magic word lawyer was said. the ed doc said 5 more hours and no one could have helped me. all in hospital or nursing homes (mostly nursing homes) where proper protocol wasn't followed. the scabies were transfered from a resident to me via an aide. thats how i discovered no one had even been treated, not even infected staff! when i caught scabies, they let the aides handle it. no changing the bed, cleaning the bed, no using the creme toes up, no shower the next day, no creme again. after getting the aide to read the box and following the directions, we were both scabie free. simply by not following hygienic protocol, every resident and most the aides, caught something avoidable.

    Podoconiosis is a type of elephantiasis (leg swelling) found in subsistence farming communities in the tropics. It is an unusual disease, triggered not by any bacterium, virus or parasite, but by an abnormal reaction to irritant mineral particles found in soils of volcanic origins. So it's pretty rare and not really something to worry about. As for the washing machine harboring bacteria, that is certainly true, which is why you should leave the lid up for at least 24 hours before washing another load, or add 1/8 cup of bleach (one fluid ounce) to the wash water and mix it in well before adding the next load of clothes.

  • @honeylambb9864
    @honeylambb9864 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ironing your clothes with as hot an iron as possible will kill any bacteria that is still on your clothes after washing. Also wash your clothes in the hottest water possible if you have to use the laundromat. It is really weird but all rental apartments in Britain, Europe and even in Eastern Europe provide a private washing machine in the kitchen for the tenant but in the United States and Canada, most rental apartment buildings just provide a laundry room in the basement that all the tenants share (unless you are renting a condominium in which case you would have your own washer and dryer in your kitchen).

    I like the statement "All humans are gross". You sure said it. Good video man, I enjoyed it. I've ALWAYS stressed the importance of hygiene and to be honest, I don't like to be around people with poor hygiene for every reason under the sun. It's just plain unpleasant and there's rarely a legitimate excuse for it. In most places in today's world, there's no excuse at all.

    Human beings are actually creatures best described as "anti-fragile." We require the strain of gravity to give our bones strength and the onslaught of microscopic invaders to hone our immune systems. You adapt to your environment. Children not exposed to sufficiently diverse colonies of bacteria develop issues later in life. Since you cite no studies here I shall assert my rebuttal in kind. Feel free to read the science for yourself at Nature.com. ;)

      I'm nearly certain you are just joking. However, on the off chance you are not, I offer you this... If you managed to avoid disease or becoming prey- as is common for leopards in the wild- you would certainly obtain protection from the bacterial colonies present in that society. As I'm sure you are aware, human biofilms and microbial environments are quite different than other creatures in other locales. Thus, you would still be susceptible to pathogens that your immune system has not encountered before- not to mention your greatly reduced life expectancy from not having proper nutrition and medical care for all of your years prior to integration with your native species.

    I don't know what kind of boyscout troupe you were in, but when I was in boyscouts, we would go on backpacking trips through the mountains for days and even weeks at a time in which my scoutmaster took hygiene very seriously and made us bathe in the rivers or lakes every other day because he knew how important it was.
    Part of the packing list was body soap and wash rags. Not cleaning yourself for weeks on end while in the woods can be very dangerous.
    You also left out staph infections as well, which can happen easier when you are filthy.

    Back in high school I had friend with chronic depression, apparently she would spend months without showering (nor washing her hair); I don't think she ever really smelled bad, and she definitely didn't smell like perfume either.
    I know at least she did wash her hands and didn't have bad breath so I guess she did brush her teeth... but I would have never known about the bathing thing until she mentioned it.
    She said that she just thought it was too much hassle to shower, I'm pretty sure that it was more about her depression though, since the few months where she didn't seem to struggle so much with it, she did seem to put more effort into her self-care.
    I just always thought it strange that none of our common friends ever noticed it before.

    This really depends on where you live, though. I'm from a small rural town with moderate climate - if i don't shower, I get oily and smelly in about three days. When I am in a big city, the air is so bad, I get filthy within a day. I was in the middle of Africa, Mauritania desert, with no chance of showering and fourteen days later, with mild daily attendance to the hairy bits and basic bathroom hygiene, my hair and skin was still perfectly civil. I had no BO to speak of. And we hiked for the better part of the day.

    This isn't remotely accurate, an affront to evolutionary biology and misappropriated.
    Trace, I love you buddy, your my favorites dnews host. This is biased to the point of scientific inaccuracy. Everybody smells, even if you shower, that's true, but most healthy people that don't shower don't stink significantly. Yes, there are some health conditions that can be alleviated by showering with soap, that doesn't mean you're statistically likely to get one of those conditions if you don't shower. Rinsing your skin if it has dirt on it is good. If you work in a place that needs to be bacteria free such as a hospital, you need to abide that, but we all know that consequences of over use of antibacterials, there just isn't an alternative right now, you can't be getting bacteria in an open skin.
    Equating bacteria and disease, completely disingenuous. You need healthy bacteria to be healthy, you remove healthy bacteria, you're less healthy. It is NOT healthier to perpetually strip away the bacteria and food sources for that bacteria and the protective layer of sebum that a million years of evolution designed to protect our skin, that doesn't make sense. I understand that culturally we think it's gross, like eating bugs, it's a hard stereotype to break, doesn't make it true. Your skin will develop a natural pH and oil balance, with only a mild smell. Of could starting bacterial cultures, diet, climate, health, will affect how long it takes to make this balance, and you can artificially help it along since you artificially broke it.
    Sweat isn't odorless, it contains sufficient lactic acid and urea to be fragrant on its own.
    The importance of bacteria is obvious from an evolutionary perspective, why do you think the anus and vagina are located so close together, especially when most people poop while giving birth? Was that an accident? A flaw of evolution? It's the same for nearly every mammal! No, it's supposed to be that way. Babies are supposed to be populated with bacteria when they are born. An unbiased look at the science would have found the benefits pretty clear, but a basic thought experiment on evolutionary biology is usually all anyone needs to get a grasp on the matter.
    Not to say there aren't cases where some soap and water aren't better, and people also evolved around water, a regular rinse in warm water is good, but so is a healthy, undisturbed balance of bacteria. So says evolutionary biology, the design of the human body, and science. No need to fear monger people into adding to Unilevers profits.

  • @ShermanT.Potter
    @ShermanT.Potter 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    In regards to E. Coli in the washing machine, that's why you set your water heater to at least 130F and run your washer on hot (not warm). I raise livestock, so when I wash my clothes, I do a pre-soak, extra large load setting, and extra rinse. If the dirt lots are wet, or if a hog chews on you or comes out of a wallow and rubs on you, etc. it doesn't take long to get covered from the knees down. Then every once in a while the manure spreader will cease to unload and you have to clear the beaters by hand (bare hands if you don't have a tool). Pulling newborns when necessary, a sheep sneezing dewormer back in your face. The list goes on... :)

    I have a friend who rides the city bus more than I do, he worked in a large city hospital laundry for many years, and rarely brushes his teeth but doesn't understand why they are now falling out now and breaking when he eats. He doesn't wash his hands often, even after riding the bus and holding onto the seat in front of him and the metal bars, as well as pulling the cord to alert the driver to stop. This guy is always sick with various things. Though he washes his clothes I'm sure their not always clean. I've known this guy for over 40 years and he's always been like this. He's 65 years old now. He's gotten to the point to where I don't like hanging out with him and his hygiene is one of the reasons. He rarely washes his hands, if ever, after using the bathroom. I've told him to wash hands but he tells me he uses toilet paper so there's no need....ewwww! I don't eat anything he cooks, etc.. if he breaths close to my food or drink I wont eat or drink it because one can almost see the fog of bacteria streaming from his mouth. I'm tired of trying to get him to be clean.

    I'm a total clean freak when it comes to my body, my cellphone and iPad and earbuds. I wipe my devices and earbuds down at the end of the day with rubbing alcohol and paper towels. My kitchen has to be super clean before I cook and bake and I wash my hands numerous time while I prepare food. I ride the city bus at times and by the time I get home I'm so grossed out and refuse to lay on my bed until I get a shower. Not just brushing my teeth is good enough, but my tongue and more. This stuff is easy for me. A lot of the bacterias on our skin is good bacterias and fights the bad bacterias. One place I think a lot of people miss with hygiene is under their fingernails. Dollar Tree has good fingernail brushes. Clean clothes and bedding is a must, along with my apartment. BEING CLEAN AND LIVING IN A CLEAN HOUSE OR APART IS A MUST!

    Probably going to gross you out:
    I haven't brushed regularly for 9 years. Yup, I bush maybe once every 60 days.
    My teeth have NEVER been in such good condition, not for the 16 years prior. Before I had 3 fillings done, two of which are in adult teeth. I also have 2 crowns and wore braces from May 02 through Dec 06. I stopped brushing within a few weeks of getting my braces removed.
    Want to know why? Because those 4 1/2 years were HELL. Brushing my teeth stripped off the upper layers of my gums, flossing sliced into them, and proxy brushes were just tortuous. I got at least a dozen abscesses that needed to be drained, and multiple times had to take antibiotics for infections during those 4 1/2 years.
    When I stopped, almost immediately swelling went down, pain went away, and I noticed my mouth actually felt better.
    Now, I still clean food particles off my teeth(mainly the front ones) and use toothpicks for tough particles, but that's about as far as my efforts in that area go on a regular basis.
    Very rarely do I get complaints about bad breath, and almost never to I see any damage to my teeth.
    Last year I went for a free teeth cleaning, just to see what had been going on(Major fear of dentists, those 2 crowns are the result of the story).
    He found: 0 cavities, both fillings had some damage to the filling and needed replacing, and the guy tried to claim I had a gum infection. I explained to him that if he didn't see damage to the teeth, then I was fine. And that the "infection" he was referring to had been there for 20+ years, and was just the normal state of my gums.
    The body adapts, and the mouth is perfectly capable of being healthy without brushing, flossing or using idiotic "99.99%" bacterial killing mouthwash. That "99.99%" its killing is mostly good bacteria; remember that.

    When you brought up breaking open skin and possibly prompting infection if you don't wash off the bacteria and oils from our skin it made me think of how people can develop MRSA from poor hygiene and open cuts or sores on the skin because MRSA bacteria are common on the human body. Don't worry, that bacteria is one of the bacterium which wash off when we shower or wash our bodies in other ways of cleaning.

      My breath smells better than most, I just don't eat sugar. Go look at some third world countries and they have the whitest teeth I ever seen, they have never brushed them a day in their life, its the sugar that causes these problems.

    • @dangbreh5719
      @dangbreh5719 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stock Axel No need to, just avoid sugar, natural sugar is fine. Most infections caused in the mouth are because of what you put in it. I have ultra white teeth and have never bleached them. Bacteria thrives on processed sugar.

    There are some who have found that, in general, we can forgo washing with soap or washing at all, except for when we are actually muddy or work-soiled, without becoming smelly and not nice to be near. Apparently after a week or two, once the bugs have battled it out and settled down, we end up smelling just, well, like a human. Look up David Whitlock.

    How much is too much? i hear sometimes showering too often is not good because excessive exfoliation can break skin creating entrances to the bloodstream. also a lot of soaps and tooth pastes have very harmful chemicals in them. what do you think?

    The longest I went was four days. But here is the thing I have a boyfriend and he does not smell me because:
    1. I am still brushing teeth at this time and tougue.
    2. I used dry baths washcloth wippes when going out in private areas and all over the body.
    3. When I wash I exfoliate my body.
    4. I use mineral salt deodorant everyday.
