Can exterior stucco or cement plastering be used for Interior plastered walls, yes
We are showing this video while explaining the strongest exterior cement plaster I know of. They asked for strength. I gave them strength.
Will this hold up the house? No.
In this video, we are applying an exterior cement plaster. Is it stronger than any interior plaster? Of course, it is. However, if you are a kid and want to use thumbtacks to hang your posters or pictures, forget them, as they won’t go through cement plaster.
No plastering method will completely stabilize the wall. Why?
We attached metal stucco lath and then applied, Eisenwall, which is much stronger than the Structo-lite they originally had.
When that foundation moves, and it will, concrete, stone, or even brick won’t stop the movement started at a foundation or below.🍾
The most common plaster for interior walls is Structo-lite as a basecoat followed by a lime finish.
This video shows an alternative to interior plasters using exterior stucco.
I think what we use in hospitals and schools for many reasons, Structo-lite-basecoat with a cement lime finish; the method I’m showing is nearly a stronger alternative.

Hi Kirk, If you have a house that is likely to move, why not go with a flexible wall. Pull the lath off and put up sheetrock, that won't affect the look of the trim. You'll have one or two seams that are more flexible than plaster and will never pop off. If there is settling any cracks are likely to be under the tape along the seams.

Kirk, you do talk, but much of what is video taped is not clear enough for us to figure out just by looking. It isn't that the taping is bad, it isn't. It is just that plasters are fine enough that you can't tell by looking what's in them. We can't tell that the wall is sucking the moisture out. We can't tell that the plaster is becoming stiff. So all your commentary adds to the learning experience. You have a singular wit, which makes it fun. The way you swoop a trowel and make it look easy is beauty in motion. The way you admonish us not to do this or that because you have already done it before and learned the hard way, that is precious information. Your work is an art. the days of craftsmen may be gone, but through your tutelage guys like me, well, it gives us hope. As you so often say, heck, if you can do it then maybe we can too- with thirty or so years of practice, but then that is better than never being able to do it at all. I hope, I really do, that yours is not a dying breed, but the tip of a marvelous iceberg. No one wants to work day in and day out just for the bucks. Isn't better to finish up the day taking pride in what you did, knowing that few could have done it better, and that had you lived in the renaissance, some small corner of your wall might have been scrawled with your signature? I have seen the erosion of the trades become nothing more than business, a chore, a time clock. Many do not want to admit their mistakes, don't back their work. No wonder DIY'ers like myself even exist. Believe me, if I had a wall to plaster, and I had the bucks, I would not hesitate to use your service. Tell the men you work with, remind them, that they have the talent, they are the creme de la creme, and a few of us out here, well, we are not blind to it.

Your videos are so through and informative. I am an absolute novice and rehabbing a 10,000 sq foot building that’s full of wire lathe. An old 1800’s schoolhouse with walls that are thick plaster except where the chalkboards were removed. A 20x5 rectangular amount of wire lathe is exposed now with
a 1 1/4 inch gap in the middle of the wall. Any videos or opinions on wire lathe repair?
Good afternoon Mred, if it were me, I'd use a 20-minute fast set USG joint compound, there are other alternatives such as veneer basecoat or structo-lit, but the USG is your faster and easier for this simple repair.

The walls that are still up have the rough coat on it. My end plan is to smooth veneer it. I fell into this schoolhouse, when it was offered, I immediately said yes. Wood lathe and true 2x's with plaster from 80-100 years old is stupid hard to get off.. I remember my demo days. (they used sea-weed as insulation up here in the northeast)

HI Kirk, I've plastered my block garage and basement, now so I've had some practice--I"m remodeling the kitchen. 64 yo.(Who--man )just learning. So I have a wall I took back to the lath, I have struco-lite for 2 coat base and gauging plaster/lime for finish coat. The wall is brick block and wood lath. Do I need to apply a mesh to the lath or can I just add the bonding agent -its a small wall in kitchen with a window and door. I've also taken out the wall between kitchen and Dining room leaving the studs (for now) and enough plaster at the top of the wall to try and create an arch I think I'm over my head here. Trying to find plasterboard/rockboard for that part of the project to add structure before plastering the arch... Am I on the right track?

Good Evening Dan from So Cal, thank you. I did use lime on my upstairs as that's where I sleep. Other areas that had sheetrock when I bought the home I left it alone.
In this video, the fella said he wanted the strength of an exterior wall, so that's what we gave him.

Hi, Kirk, can you talk more about working in cold temperatures and winter? I've got an old house that is basically unheated. I can warm it up while I'm there with a gas stove. Then the temperature falls when I leave. What kind of products can I use in winter? I've got a plaster ceiling to repair, some drywall, and would like to do some cement detailing around a fireplace.
Evening WV dude, you can always insulate your home.
FYI, a gas stove will warm your home but also suck the oxygen out of the air, you will feel tired when using it unless your very young and healthy.
I would suggest using the fireplace and add more clothes it's called layering two tee shirts instead of one.

Have you ever used a mud flap for a mud board?
I use them.
Here in Texas it’s blistering hot and white mortar dryers faster than any mud.
You hardly ever have to shake up the mud unlike on a plywood mud board.
Just put a mud flap from a truck on top of your plywood.
Happy New Year Mike, I used many things such as garbage cans or whatever is stable, when I forget my mud boards.
They do sell acrylic mud boards.

I did this on a closet, and did not use a vacuum. Scary. Is there bad stuff in the plaster? What kind of filter are you using on the vac?

Whatever's in existing plaster, you and me don't want to inhale it, this vacuum has a hepa filter which we purchased separately as it's considered a good filter.

Hi Kirk. Long time viewer, first time caller. I have a 1925 craftsman style house in Galveston, TX. The exterior is cement plaster over structural clay brick with a dash finish. The interior is also cement plaster with a sand finish over either structural clay brick or cedar lath. There is horse hair mixed into the interior plaster. My question is for repairs (cracks, holes, etc.), do I used the same techniques I would on the exterior? Or should I used gypsum based plaster?

I would use whatever is available personally as most products you mention especially the horsehair won't be found today here in the USA, if you want the strength of Horse Hair, I would substitute half-inch Fiberglass mesh instead.

HI Kirk, wondering which caulk you really prefer for fixing stucco cracks, flexx mor or acrylic. I'm having trouble with the caulk oozing out, once the house warms up to the Arizona heat. Love the instruction, please keep up the great work.
Howdy Mossis Mate, i would recommend the mor-flexx as it has sand in it, if a caulking melts try a polyurethane caulking, they don't melt but are a real drag to apply, clean up and most don't have sand thus it's difficult to match exterior sand finishes,

Howdy Morris, color coating and regular cementitious won't adhere to caulking as a rule, if it's a little bit it would be o.k. say like just a crack or so,
however acrylic stucco will adhere to any caulked cracks, sort of petty but I don't want to steer you in the wrong direction.

Cool video, Kirk! Excellent craftsmanship. I'm in Italian "transplanted" in Baltimore, MD. I'd like to plaster a wall that is now in the same shape as the one shown in your video (just laths attached to the studs). I've never used plaster before. A couple of questions for you: what is the composition of the muds you used in this video? Do you buy the ingredients and mix them yourself or do you buy bags? There are many types of cement and plaster: do you have a videos that explain what these types are and how to use them? Many thanks.
Howdy Patrizio my fellow Italian, what we did in this video takes at least ten years of hands on practice, my advice is to hire a professional.
However, I used 3 parts sand to three parts cement plaster.

Kirk, Love your videos! Question, I'm an old time mason and have plastered various things through the years, but now I have an old building with original lime plaster walls, some walls are almost 100' by 12'. I'm the lone mason/plasterer. Is it even possible for me to so this without showing stop/starts? I'm sure in the old days and even now they have many guys running a trowel and darby. Would it be ok just to use concrete plaster on the cleaned walls?
Good evening Dougmy, fellow plasterer. If it were me and referring to interior walls, I'd use Imperial or Diamond finish veneer plaster.
These are lime plasters, basically.

Howdy Jason Dude, there were three flight of stairs for Big Louuuu, carrying his own 270 pounds plus the 20 buckets before we got to the finish coat, it was an all day project that he also carried up tools and metal lath and other accessories, so he was a bit beat up towards the end, so was I, as we left after dark.
The only one who wasn't beat up was jason, as he can go all day then go to the gym or to the nearest pub.

My wife's going to kill me and my kids are wondering where I went. I never get tired at watching do the impossible and make it look easy peasy.
What is the best job for newbies? I had some plaster that was basically dust behind paint. I knocked it all out and redid it with plaster of paris. three coats. Not smooth so it blended well with that 100yo wall. Painted great and you can't see it. I was hooked immediately.
Also are you from Alameda, or another part of the country.

I have worked on worse planks then these and many stories higher, it would be a real drag to have a plank snap but so far in all my years have not had this happen, I have however in the past seen some so bad with rot that I took one end placed it on the scaffold and jumped on quite a few and have intentionally snapped them in order to avoid their breaking while on them.
Sometime If I have a board that looks iffy I have big Louuuu just put his leg on them and they break from his weight.

I have a question. In a situation like this, would you ever recommend a wall to have movement joints built in? I know with tile you need to incorporate movement joints at each wall corner, it can't be grouted or have the tiles butted against each other. With sheetrock, too, I think ideally in commercial settings it's supposed to be every 40 feet or so, you have a movement joint? I've seen in some subway stations, metal panel walls with big movement joints per each 4x8 or 4x12 or so sheet (in Taiwan where there are earthquakes...) Could you maybe tell us more about movement joints in plastering and stucco scenarios?
Evening Gil, I personally have not added expansion joints in someone's home before. They are good for the exterior, but if the house is moving that much, It's time to, "bite the bullet," and call a structural engineer.

Hi Kirk, can you apply this type of stucco onto a interior drywall surface? I'm trying to have a cement wall on one side of the bedroom, but I'm wondering if it's better to take down the drywall and add a wire sheet with paper underneath onto the wall studs instead. New to all of this so any info would be helpful!
Morning Jairo, you can apply over drywall, but only a finish coat.
For example, apply a bonding agent over the drywall or sheetrock then apply an n exterior cementitious finish coat such as La Habra color finishes,
Note, if you do this the wall will scratch your skin if rubbed against too hard as it's cementitious.

@@StuccoPlastering I have a similar issue...Most of the house has the drywall with holes in it for the keying as you call it, and they have plastered it mostly. Some rooms are just drywall. The main living area is plaster. I had to remove a number of areas to repair the wood termites ate...So what is a good appraoch? Find that hole/perforated drywall, or use something else on the studs, and then 3:1 Eizen, then Imperial, then Diamond, or? I have done years of clay sculpting, and rock, and good with my hand to eye feel in such material, but really no experience in this. I cannot find anyone that knows how, and I am pretty sure I can't afford you to fly out:-) So I am dedicating a wall to get the feel and then work to perfect. I have watched about 50 of your videos and I feel like you got me all pumped up to do it...SO! I at the supply places, I need to ask for cement board, then get the Rapid set, or Eizen, then USG materials.... I will be doing this almost alone, so I'm mixing then applying. I know, its not what you recommend, not much of a choice. BTW, Nice job on your upstairs lime wall and flooring. Open to some advice and tips I might have missed in the 50 videos...lol Cheers!

What are your thoughts on Weldbond as a bonding agent?
Howdy Burr 91 dude,sorry, have not used weld bond before, but see it sells at Home Depot, I would use quikrete sold at Home depot also if it were me or the Larsons if you can find it, you can also go online to buy the weld crete line on amazon for you convenience I have placed a link above for the plaster weld which is used for interiors and a link for the Weld Crete which is for exterior uses” keep in mind you can also go to the plastering material yards to purchase this material.
Or simply clink on the link and have it delivered to your front door,
Remember nothing adheres to a dusty surface, always use a bonding agent for anything interior or exterior or most products will fail within 3 to 5 years if this step is missed.
BTW, I have never had a plastering or stucco project fail with Larson’s bonding agents in over 30 years, act wise and purchase the strongest and the best.
Lastly always apply the bonding agents on clean surfaces of the wall, not in the plaster or stucco material.

Im doing a multi residential and the plasterers were working near me and i asked them if they ever used the rounded pool trowels, they just smirked, they were all using the squared ones
Howdy Russor Dude, I hear this often, I've taught my sons and daughters to use whatever floats your boat.
The most common size for a beginner would be the rectangle 12X5, for the more advance 14X5
I don't recommend anyone do as I do.

Haha, why does this seem to bug everyone? Its like taking the mud off the bottom of the hawk, which by the way, I do as well kirk, I guess I cant possibly be a plasterer!
I do use square trowels most of the time though, they just give me a better feel for the flat-ness of the wall, but that's just personal preference! At the end of the day, if the wall is flat, and the finish is smooth, who cares if I chose to spread it with a scrap of sheet metal? I also use my poolies at times too, and yes I can make a flat smooth wall with either!
By the way, I do use a pump sprayer most of the time instead of my blister brush, something else kirk says he catches flak for!
Bottom line, if someone cares to judge you by the tool or technique instead of the finished product, than they are probably just insecure about their own abilities, and really just afraid that there could be a better easier way out there. Of course they are going to feel silly if they put up all that stink, only to cut a load off the bottom of the hawk and find out not only was it easier, but that the plastering gods didn't turn their half spread batch to stone for trying it.

FYI, I taught all my children take the mud off any way you wish, I can take it from the top or bottom or use any hand to hold the hawk and or trowel with, this does not seem to me a big deal however when I do this some people seem to be impressed by the ambidextrous of this feat.
BTW, I am a Nunchuck expert, that fun skills also require the use of both hands sort of like a juggler again to use either hand just feels normal or no big deal.

I would have put CL ( calcium lime ) which is perfect for this application. It is flexible enough to take all movements.

Would it work to do a stucco base coat onto plasterweld over gypboard, and then go straight to Veneer finish coat?
Howdy Kerry, this would be overkill, apply first your basecoat veneer, then your finish veneer.

Evening Wayne, I would skim with plaster and trowel it a lot until smooth. Or basecoat it and come back with a smooth finish color coat of Silver.
Me I would use, "Silpro," it is not designed for walls but for floors

Howdy, it's possible, but quite foolish, I would recommend a veneer plaster much easier and only an 1/8 thick, water resistance, smooth, hard like real plaster ought to be, much more effective for kitchens and or bathrooms.

so you would normally use gypsum based 20 minute compound like westpac fast set lite 20 in this situation but at the owners request for strength you are using cement plaster with an imperial base skim coat ? when you say cement plaster do you mean portland cement ? like portland cement straight and from the bag with water ?
Howdy Jessy, for this fix, I would generally use structo-lite for the base coat and a veneer plaster for the top coat, about a third the strength as what I did in this video, but strong enough to be used in hospitals and schools where strength is necessary.
FYI, Portland cement plaster, the 94 pound bags are mixed with 3 parts sand as a rule.

I heard you say Structo-Base here. One plasterer near me says he doesn't use Diamond or Imperial anymore, he says he only uses Structo-Gauge gauging plaster. How is this stuff? Awesome?
Also weirdly here in the Northeast many houses I've seen here have what looks like a normal finish plaster, but some kind of gray stuff that looks/feels like Portland cement as their basecoat.
Greetings Bates Dude, USG's Structo-Lite makes a very universal base coat, it's too gluey like to use as a finished product for me.

The only video you are missing is showing how to apply stucco on round detail trim EIFS. Decorative band. Some have many curves and it can be time consuming lol. Been there done that

Hi Kirk, great videos, thank you so much. I have an issue.....living in rented apartment, and it happens already twice having my landlord fixing interior walls in the middle of the winter...Chicago... tiered of it, I want to do it myself this time, and it doesn't need to be perfect. It's an old building with plaster walls.... can I fixed my wall with cement stucco or I should use set lite 20? Now, it is pretty obvious to me that they were using some kind of cheep joining compound to patch my wall, and after an month or so, I've got blisters back on and all that comes with it.........I really need your advice
