The problem is that most Trump supporters really support Trump because their innate hate and bigotry aimed at those "others". They will rarely admit to it but that's what really drives them. For example, Christofascism is just a manifestation of that. No point in trying to have a civilised discussion with them. A big study was published in 2011 that showed that for hourly workers who worked 40 hours a week, 49 percent of those workers in the United States did not earn enough money to support themselves and one dependent in a lifestyle that was minimal.. the minimum lifestyle was renting an apartment with two people for bedroom in a safe location, transportation to work or school only, healthcare, and a healthy diet that only included vegetables. The amount of money deemed necessary for this lifestyle did not include money for any luxuries at all including cigarettes, movies, videos, vacations, club memberships etcetera. We need to fight to increase taxes on the wealthy, raise the hourly minimum wage to a living wage, provide free college education or trade school education, adequate support for families and adequate support for the elderly. When very few people are worried about starving or eviction, the oligarchs will no longer have fertile ground in which to sow their fascist ideas..

I think part of the problem is age... I grew up in the late '50s and through the '60s when Russia was our mortal enemy... If you're younger than say 50 years old you don't remember that. And you have no idea what it was like going to elementary school everyday and having nuclear attack drills... And you don't remember the civil defense trucks going through your neighborhood on Saturdays telling you where to go in the event of a nuclear attack... If you can get your friends to check it out, then I'm sure they will change their minds. Sometime in early Spring of this year, I was helping a childhood friend navigate Medicare. He was whining a bit and I said, well it will continue to improve under Biden/Harris. WHAM! He started shouting at me, “Trump all the way !” Spewing nonsense and venom. This was a first and I was in shock. Anyone else, I would have hung up immediately. Tried a wee little conversation with beloved childhood cousins. I did more listening, trying to be compassionate. I think the best approach is to attack their own integrity, their principles and their sanity. They will resist, but being the type of people who are obviously susceptible to brainwashing, if repeated often enough, some will eventually budge. I remember reading that was the problem of prejudice (pre-judging) however not all Trump voters are a lost cause, and we certainly can't give up on such a large percentage of society. These people are in a religion that used to be fairly benign but has turned into an extreme cult (Christian Nationalism) with some saying they need to take over the government and take away women's right to vote (since they vote liberal), etc. I was shocked by what I found.

I just got off an fb string where a MAGA supporter trolled me over a comment I made on Harris’ page. He made a series of assertions and I simply asked him to point me to his sources for his claims. Predictably he came back with more assertions so I asked for his sources again. He told me to do my homework so I retrieved several statistical documents and told him if he did not agree with the numbers then to please provide me with his sources. After the third try, he started using ad hac attacks and stopped replying altogether. That is the pattern. I never called him names and even told him that I would be open to changing my mind if he could support him claims with evidence. No such luck!

What helped me was listening to Tony Schwartz’s interviews on Trump. Schwartz really wrote the Art of the Deal and explains how he knows Trump better than anyone but his wives. You tube has several of them and really opened my eyes to him.

I have a cousin who has always been the sister I didn’t get. We sit on opposite political sides and it was clear in 2016 that she was very much trump entrenched. It was clear I could not change her views but I would not give trump the power to destroy a relationship that was so precious to me. When we visit, politics is taboo but it is the elephant (literally & figuratively) in the room. Trump politics has divided this country in so many unforgivable ways. I loathe him for that.

Absent the racists & religious zealots, we need to talk more about the anatomical & physiological differences in the brains of critical & non-critical thinkers. The reputable media needs to start focusing on why some people are vulnerable to sources of information that spew illogical information. Also, highlighting the logical progression between autocratic policies & the dissolution of democracy (if they even know what democracy is).
I would suggest following Walt Whitman's advice, as made popular by Ted Lasso: "Be curious, not judgemental." That is, rather than try to convince them of anything, seek instead to genuinely understand them. Find out why they see things that way. I suspect we will all find that we agree more than we disagree on matters of import. Help them understand your level of agreement...find common ground. Even if you end up not agreeing on an issue you will at least understand them better and they will understand you better. Neither will see the other side as "crazy" or "stupid" or "evil". Instead we will see a bit of ourselves in them which takes down the temperature and begins to build a foundation to find solutions through collaboration and not confrontation.

However, for anyone on this thread who gets it, I watched a brand new movie last night called “Untruth,” the follow up to the “Unfit” movie. It delves deeply into the psychology of Trump voters and clearly paints a picture of the deep danger we are in. I highly recommend you send it to anyone who is wavering on their vote or perhaps not voting at all, which is hard to believe, but here we are.
Hard topic. I do believe so that more Trump supporters start to educate themselves on their own and start to distance themselves from him. Maybe not in big numbers, but I think it is happening. Agree, that it is better to stay calm with people who has their own strong opinions on things. My best experience with arguments was to tell the guy that he is free to believe in what he is believing, and I respect that, but I have my own opinion, and it is based on my life experience. It was before Trump was elected. When another guy asked me what I think about Trump, I told him that a con artist always will stay as a con artist. I think folks who support Trump like the life stories, some wisdom excerpts with a spin of some drama, they are sensitive in their own way. I think that the best approach it is to start casual conversation, and not mention politic or religion, and just talk about life and giving some samples which are in some contradiction with the opponent viewpoint. Don't try to prove anything, just tell life stories, people react to it, and even if they not showing, it will be in their minds after all. And if it is a nut case scenario, then don't be disappointed, usually that type needs some calming therapy, so understand, that the human is not hundred percent him or her -self. In some cases, opponent could have his own viewpoint on things, and it is good to agree on good things, it will show that you are not an enemy to the human being in front of you. Whoever grooming the Trump supporters minds they partly using the military tactic, to create an enemy out of opposition, it is dangerous, but we just have to be patient and calm. Eventually, at least some people will come to the common sense. Hope it helps.

He told me that Donald is the only president during his lifetime to donate his salary. He really thought that meant something because they don’t understand or believe that he has taken our government and governments around the world for hundreds of millions of dollars by having the Secret Service and heads of state stay at his golf courses and his other grifts. He acted as though I had committed some horrible blasphemy toward his religious god and just flat out blocked my wife and I on Facebook and refuses to talk about it, end of story! We are all still Americans, or so I thought, but knowing I'm not a Trumper he unfreinds us both? (including my wife?) How do we ever move forward from here as Americans? Guess we find out soon enough.
Some family members are glued to the television at decibels that would make your ears bleed. The level of rage, 24/7 has some severe negative effects. I only go over to help them get their projects done. If the television is on, I leave that space. I used to engage with them, but there is little common ground. So my visits have become less and less. My peace of mind is more important. My advice is to vote. Find your people and vote. I have even turned off the television at my own home. I read books and do things that bring me joy. I wear my Harris/Walz shirt in public and say nothing unless I’m asked. I am voting my conscience. If someone asks my opinion, I will say, “do you genuinely want to know?” Sometimes I can get into a conversation without verbal attacks. Thanks for the post.
Former Trumper, and have many friends and family members who are still all-in for the orange menace. It seems, almost without a formal arrangement, we don't talk politics anymore. Instead, we speak about what have in common, which is alot.

The thing that’s so challenging is that he’s basically conditioned them to immediately push back the moment they hear anything negative or disparaging they immediately shut down. My immediate family and sister in law are all supporting him and when I try to have a conversation and explain my point of view they just try to cut it off before it even begins. I can’t even get to anything of substance.

Thanks to over four decades of Reagan neoliberal economics, the United States has very little middle class anymore. A big study was published in 2011 that showed that for hourly workers who worked 40 hours a week, 49 percent of those workers in the United States did not earn enough money to support themselves and one dependent in a lifestyle that was minimal.. the minimum lifestyle was renting an apartment with two people for bedroom in a safe location, transportation to work or school only, healthcare, and a healthy diet that only included vegetables. The amount of money deemed necessary for this lifestyle did not include money for any luxuries at all including cigarettes, movies, videos, vacations, club memberships etcetera.
We need to fight to increase taxes on the wealthy, raise the hourly minimum wage to a living wage, provide free college education or trade school education, adequate support for families and adequate support for the elderly.

Tried a wee little conversation with beloved childhood cousins. I did more listening, trying to be compassionate. The look of confusion on my cousin's face when I told her Trump told Christians that this would be the only time they'd ever have to vote again was very telling. I spoke about our concerns about abortion rights and it went right to state rights. He totally refused to accept the fact that maga is working to make it illegal for women to go to other states. I think the best approach is to attack their own integrity, their principles and their sanity. They will resist, but being the type of people who are obviously susceptible to brainwashing, if repeated often enough, some will eventually budge. I remember reading that was the problem of prejudice (pre-judging) however not all Trump voters are a lost cause, and we certainly can't give up on such a large percentage of society. These people are in a religion that used to be fairly benign but has turned into an extreme cult (Christian Nationalism) with some saying they need to take over the government and take away women's right to vote (since they vote liberal), etc. I was shocked by what I found.

I just got off an fb string where a MAGA supporter trolled me over a comment I made on Harris’ page. He made a series of assertions and I simply asked him to point me to his sources for his claims. Predictably he came back with more assertions so I asked for his sources again. He told me to do my homework so I retrieved several statistical documents and told him if he did not agree with the numbers then to please provide me with his sources.
After the third try, he started using ad hac attacks and stopped replying altogether.
That is the pattern. I never called him names and even told him that I would be open to changing my mind if he could support him claims with evidence. No such luck!

What helped me was listening to Tony Schwartz’s interviews on Trump. Schwartz really wrote the Art of the Deal and explains how he knows Trump better than anyone but his wives. You tube has several of them and really opened my eyes to him.

I have a cousin who has always been the sister I didn’t get. We sit on opposite political sides and it was clear in 2016 that she was very much trump entrenched. It was clear I could not change her views but I would not give trump the power to destroy a relationship that was so precious to me. When we visit, politics is taboo but it is the elephant (literally & figuratively) in the room. Trump politics has divided this country in so many unforgivable ways. I loathe him for that.

I would suggest following Walt Whitman's advice, as made popular by Ted Lasso: "Be curious, not judgemental." That is, rather than try to convince them of anything, seek instead to genuinely understand them. Find out why they see things that way. I suspect we will all find that we agree more than we disagree on matters of import. Help them understand your level of agreement...find common ground. Even if you end up not agreeing on an issue you will at least understand them better and they will understand you better. Neither will see the other side as "crazy" or "stupid" or "evil". Instead we will see a bit of ourselves in them which takes down the temperature and begins to build a foundation to find solutions through collaboration and not confrontation.

Thank you for this video, but I’m afraid Trumpets are too far gone. I’ve had violent arguments with my ex FIL regarding Trump, and absolutely nothing shakes his resolve. However, for anyone on this thread who gets it, I watched a brand new movie last night called “Untruth,” the follow up to the “Unfit” movie. It delves deeply into the psychology of Trump voters and clearly paints a picture of the deep danger we are in. I highly recommend you send it to anyone who is wavering on their vote or perhaps not voting at all, which is hard to believe, but here we are.

My best experience with arguments was to tell the guy that he is free to believe in what he is believing, and I respect that, but I have my own opinion, and it is based on my life experience. It was before Trump was elected. When another guy asked me what I think about Trump, I told him that a con artist always will stay as a con artist. I think folks who support Trump like the life stories, some wisdom excerpts with a spin of some drama, they are sensitive in their own way. I think that the best approach it is to start casual conversation, and not mention politic or religion, and just talk about life and giving some samples which are in some contradiction with the opponent viewpoint. Don't try to prove anything, just tell life stories, people react to it, and even if they not showing, it will be in their minds after all. And if it is a nut case scenario, then don't be disappointed, usually that type needs some calming therapy, so understand, that the human is not hundred percent him or her -self. In some cases, opponent could have his own viewpoint on things, and it is good to agree on good things, it will show that you are not an enemy to the human being in front of you. Whoever grooming the Trump supporters minds they partly using the military tactic, to create an enemy out of opposition, it is dangerous, but we just have to be patient and calm. Eventually, at least some people will come to the common sense. Hope it helps.

Some family members are glued to the television at decibels that would make your ears bleed. The level of rage, 24/7 has some severe negative effects. I only go over to help them get their projects done. If the television is on, I leave that space. I used to engage with them, but there is little common ground. So my visits have become less and less. My peace of mind is more important. My advice is to vote. Find your people and vote. I have even turned off the television at my own home. I read books and do things that bring me joy. I wear my Harris/Walz shirt in public and say nothing unless I’m asked. I am voting my conscience. If someone asks my opinion, I will say, “do you genuinely want to know?” Sometimes I can get into a conversation without verbal attacks. Thanks for the post.

In my case I cut ties with my brother. He wanted ro have "conversations" about Trump. He would text me disgusting memes and insult me regularly. I warned him so many times to stop his behavior but he continued so I made the choice to be done with him.😢

Something that I have rarely seen mentioned is that Project 2025 is banning porn. Yes, porn! I can guarantee you that Trump voters will start flipping when they catch wind of this. Nobody wants to lose their porn.
Something I read made me think that their version of porn was LGBTQ being "groomers"
If they argue when I say 2+2=4 because it makes Trump look bad, I can't do much. If they have based their entire world view on "alternative facts" or "Fox Facts" it's pointless.
The thing that’s so challenging is that he’s basically conditioned them to immediately push back the moment they hear anything negative or disparaging they immediately shut down. My immediate family and sister in law are all supporting him and when I try to have a conversation and explain my point of view they just try to cut it off before it even begins. I can’t even get to anything of substance.
The many Republicans I know are holding their nose for Trump and voting on policy...unaware that character matters, worse yet that clearly bad character is dangerous. I tried, but arguing the blinded seems futile. Character matters to them in all aspects including hiring pet sitters...but not a president. They've been locked in right-wing commentary and aren't aware of facts or nuance nor hearing direct from Trump. They don't have time. I should know, my husband is one (not crazy MAGA tough). I love him all the same. It's a hard go. But it teaches us to debate, not hate-debate headlines anyway. Haha.

Some people are just gullible while others are more skeptical. I listen to what Trump says. I know that when a politician is constantly saying, "Look at those awful people over there" it's to divide and conquer...or to pick my pocket.
The only way to talk to them is to sit them down with a box of crayons and coloring book.

Well, alrighty then. I've had that book "Fear", but I've been afraid to read it! Guess I should. Change of topic. Perhaps next time you talk to someone like your friend, you can calmly mention that Trump did say that he will "fix it so we never have to vote again". And that kind of thing is not something that a lot of people are comfortable with.
I had a guy on here tell me that Trump never said military service members are “ losers and suckers”. He told me to post links, so I did. I spammed him back with numerous links to reputable news sources where they mentioned this very thing and all he had to say was that I never posted any links lol.
You can’t talk to them about politics. Sad that everything is political to them.
