This is cuz it shows you are currently employable, similarly having an SO will show you are currently datable. The effect is stronger the more the new sees themselves in the current. It's not how things always work but it is absolutely a pattern of behavior.

Had a woman i just met ask me to come over after work. I told that I couldn't because I was going to watch my nephew so my brother could take his wife out for her birthday. I told her i was free pretty much the rest of the week. I explained all of this and thought it was fine. This happened within the first 2 weeks of my employment there. I kid you not, this woman did everything you can imagine to be rude for the next 3 years. I had no idea why she would be rude, because Im not a sociopath. Eventually, after a year, a coworker said that she made it sound like I laughed in her face and cut her down. I couldn't believe it. I located the cell phone i had at that time, showed me texting her a text id sent thanking her and telling her i really would like to do something, and apologizing for any inconvenience. This coworker knew immediately and soon most in the office knew she had lied through her teeth. It didn't take long for her to get called out. She was furious and made the next two years just awful.
