  • After talking about Toonami a couple of times, I want to look at Cartoon Network's other block that features a lot of anime: Adult Swim. Many of us know Adult Swim for some of their original shows, but it was also a treasure trove of anime throughout the 2000s. Sometimes we got some classics like Cowboy Bebop, but other times, they showed us anime that wasn't on the mainstream radar. So, for this video, we want to look at some of the shorter or lesser discussed anime Adult Swim aired before they brought back Toonami in 2012. Judgment Meter and AT from Software Agents HQ.

    Fun fact about S-cry-Ed, it’s by the same director as Code Geass, and the director said in a magazine interview once, that Geass and S-Cry-Ed (and his other show infinite Ryvius) are a part of a trilogy. I actually finished a full rewatch of Paranoia Agent about two months ago on Crunchy Roll.
    Satoshi Kon's work was always excellent, and this show was truly a gem. The problem was if you missed certain episodes, you were basically out of the loop until you could catch it again. Thankfully that's not an issue these days, but when it first aired, that was immensely frustrating.
    Paranoia Agent had some interesting themes around taking responsibility for oneself/relationships/job/etc. and the anxieties (Lil' Slugger) that can plague us from avoiding said responsibility; it's still quite resonant with a modern audience.
    In hindsight, it's funny to hear Sam Riegel as Lil' Slugger and Liam O'Brien as the younger detective, given their close friendship today. I wonder if it was this show or another show that really cemented their relationship.

    InuYasha, Yu Yu Hakusho, Pilot Candidate and Gundam 0083 were my go-tos, with Reign The Conqueror as another fun one.
    Toonami started Adult Swim around the same time that Starz Action Channel would run “Animidnight” on Friday and Saturday nights, where they’d typically show “Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040”. G4 TV (formerly the International Channel) would also run the “Crest of the Stars” franchise, “Serial Experiments Lain”, “Gatekeepers”, and a few other bizarre series.

    I NEVER forgot Super Milk Chan (literally will do the random intro song or shout "you dumbass!" to this day with my sisters), Witch Hunter Robin (my favorite anime; I have a shirt and DVDs with film slides included in them), and Paranoia Agent (my middle sister's favorite anime). I shockingly didn't know about or get to see the April Fool's Day thing with Witch Hunter Robin, so that was awesome that you included it in the video. These animes and Toonami animes were a huge part of my teen years. Another good one I was surprised didn't at least get mentioned alongside Witch Hunter Robin was Wolf's Rain. These two shows back to back were amazing. Then let's not forget . Hack//Sign who never gets credit for doing first what SAO essentially stole as its plot. The theme song and characters were so cool.

If I remember correctly, S-Cry-ed's name comes from its manga. It's a big thing that's revealed late in the series that plugs into the Alter ability. A fun show, and manga. I remember watching pilot candidate on a chanel called locomotion, but it was short lived and I was a religious kid who wasn't allowed to watch anime, but I caught short glimpses while channel surfing. I clearly remember the scen of the cat girl being embarrassed by having her hat knocked off and some of the goddesses, but i didn¿t watch the show when I grew up because I had it confused with evangelion, wich also aired on locomotion at the time. So that was about 20 years ago, and now thanks to youI can finally watch it knowing I wasn't crazy for imagining a cat girl wearing a hat was in that show.

    • @MrTopTenList
      @MrTopTenList  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @pablocasas5906 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think Locomotion aired many shows that were shown on [adult swim] in the U.S., shows like Cowboy Bebop, Candidate for Goddess? Super Milk Chan, Wolf's Rain, Blood+, Death Note, Bleach, among others, were shown in Locomotion, which eventually became Animax later, in Latin America. The way more mature anime was broadcasted in Latin America was weird in the 2000s, due to economic problems there weren't as many shows dubbed like in the late 90s, and the quality of dubs differed a lot depending if the show was dub in Mexico or Venezuela
      I personally think things improved a lot in the mid 2010s when streaming made anime much more accessible, we now have much more anime dubbed than before

    Thank you so much for covering kikaider! It was a anime I stumble upon last year and as someone who is a huge mega man fan the series definitely was a likely influence for it so I really appreciated it for deep diving into the dark side of robots with feelings + it had a really nice art style like you said. I do disagree about the plot dragging but I can’t deny the pacing was perfect. I think the first 7 eps are really good but I think having a recap ep as 8 ep was kinda ruined the pacing for the remanding eps as I felt it was kinda rushed and didn’t reach a organic conclusion. I’ve seen plenty of 13 ep Animes at this point that while ran into issues of their own on what they could cram manage to feel complete, but with kikaider being split into twos the ending of the first show isn’t really satisfying- but the other two ovas were more iffy for me as 01 doesn’t really connect well to the first show and just exists to adapt the mangas ending properly. I do think splitting them up into two series was a good idea especially bc when the 01 cast is introduced it was a different show for the toku version anyways, but I feel they needed more eps… maybe in a timeline where 01 was a standard 13 ep ova making kikaider into a 26 ep show it would’ve gotten more re-runs, but I am glad to hear it got re-ran at all bc I thought adult swim just ditched it after it finished ngl.

You call it filler episodes, but I disagree, those episodes gave room for the audience to digest what was going on and gain depth on the characters. Like the episode when chagoon beats the scammers, it shows his intellect and how he was fostering an understanding for the common of his father’s kingdom. Again a criminally underrated show. And with the info that you just gave in the messy broadcast, I can see why a lot of ppl don’t know much about it.

But at Crunchyroll actually gave the anime an English title, unlike Disney/Hulu who released the Heavenly Delusion anime under its romanized Japanese title Tengoku Daimakyo. It's like they didn't bother checking if the series already had an English title.
