The best modern jazz-pop/funk-perfomance ever was and ever will be.
Manhattan Transfer in their prime with Weather Report playing their iconic song.
Its 14 out of 10,without the technical issues it would be 15/10

there's just 1 thing missing for me...... jaco pastorius.

It was so much cooler with Jaco performing and singing this. He made it rock. It sounds like an airline commercial with these people singing it.

This is an important moment for the Jazz Idiom:
This tune was composed in tribute to Charlie "Yardbird" Parker, and the NYC Jazz club that was named after him; Weather Report, a first-generation fusion band featuring two ex-Miles Davis sidemen (Zawinul and Shorter) among others, actually cracked the Top 40 with this; Manhattan Transfer, an act that celebrated all things "vocal group" (not incidentally, Lambert, Hendricks and Ross), had a hit of their own with their version of this...
...and the idea of Weather Report backing up Manhattan Transfer on this tune renders me speechless.
    Shoptalk...
The Transfer do not merely sing this gem, they PRESENT it:
The choreography is brilliantly conceived, flawless, and is in no way detrimental to their singing.

My mom had the album and used to play this all the time. I didn't realize how much I missed it until I went to the Navy and she sent me a cassette with my favorite songs from my childhood on it. This song was on there and it immediately transferred me back to my childhood when i popped it in the deck and hit play. This crew could sing and it sounds REALLY good on Vinyl!

Thanks for posting this. This is at the 1982 (not 1981, as previously stated) Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl in California. I was there and this video brings back good memories. Weather Report also performed at the Playboy Jazz Festival in 1981, but that was the band with Jaco Pastorius and Peter Erskine. As for it not being the same without Jaco in the mix, that is true, but that band with Victor Bailey and Omar Hakim was a superb band. I saw them do a two and half hour concert the next year at the Universal Amphitheatre, and it was as good as any Weather Report concert I ever saw. And I saw a lot of them.

Wow, a teaming of Titans, Weather Report and Manhattan Transfer. This composition has not aged a day since it was released in 1977, and MT sang it perfectly - God, Janice Siegel was so gorgeous - but you have to laugh (or wince) at those Fifties-style hep-cat lyrics, which have NOT aged well and really sound awfully quaint these days.

I was there for that and the story and what happened are different. Jaco obviously had issues with the band. Nobody talks about what Jaco did on that stage. It was some of the best music I ever heard. He went crazy playing Purple Haze on the bass like it was a guitar. Hit me up if you want a birds eye view.
