It's funny how hard the band is working and the audience is all yapping but I'm sure that's a sign that they're all feeling good!

      Yeah, I was about 16 when that record came out, early '82. I was at this concert, and I can assure you that the audience was feeling VERY good !!!

    Músicos EXCEPCIONAIS, com uma linha musical ESPETACULAR. Pena que a grande mídia, não dá espaço para shows como esse. E nós como brasileiros, temos que nos contentar com o que as redes não mostram isso. @@PatriotSteve - in 81 was when Jaco freaked out at this venue. He kept throwing off the band with bizarre time substitutions, until the rest of the band stopped. So Jaco is on the album, but this band was hastily created and worked up the tunes for the next season (82).

      Definitely. Although I missed Peter Erskine’s big band chops
      when he left the band, Omar Hakim brought a more explosive rock-funk-jazz thing
      to the band’s sound. The whole time that Omar Hakim was playing with Weather
      Report, he was also recording / touring with David Bowie, Sting, and Dire
      Straits. Versatile as hell.

    • @herrbonk3635
      @herrbonk3635 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rohnfloresmusic I liked Hakim best when he sounded a bit like Erskine on the Night passage LP. Like on the tune Procession, where he played in a soft, diffuse and searching style for most of the tune. Although I like funky rhythms, Omars more aggressive style does not excite me (neither Zawinul in sloppy, loud or repetetive mood). His soft funk on D flat waltz was great, while the intensive parts were largely pretty boring, to my ears. For instance.

      I was there, and this was one of the highlights of their
      performance. Although the VHS tape makes it look like this was their opening
      number, this was actually performed about midway through their set. They opened the set with the moody “Procession”, which was not even released yet. The VHS tape only features about one-fourth of their set, lots of stuff was left out. But cameras were rolling the whole time, from what I remember, so Playboy has it all locked away in a vault somewhere. At one point, the band walked off the stage, and the late comedian Brother Theodore came on for about ten minutes of intense monologue. Then the band came back onstage to finish their set and dothe encore with the Manhattan Transfer.

      I saw the concert just the week before, at the Palladium in NYC. Never felt that much energy. Hakim and Bailey were ecstatic to be part of that band and it showed. Hakim did the longest, craziest solo; broke his sticks twice; Shorter and Zawinul were chuckling.

    • @rohnfloresmusic
      @rohnfloresmusic  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Philippe - I agree, the energy level that this band had was something else. Interesting that Zawinul considered this the best band in the WR lineup; quite a bold statement, since every version of this band was other-worldly. I saw them again after this on the Domino Theory tour in early '84 at the Beverly Theater in L.A. with Mino Cinelu on percussion and they were TIGHT. Omar Hakim was on fire at that point. - Also saw them in April '83 for the Procession tour at the Universal Amphitheater in L.A. with the same lineup as this video, Jose Rossy on percussion. But between '82 and '84 this band really became one tight unit on stage. At least they went out with a bang.

      No, only on VHS tape.
      Also, a 2-LP set was released of this festival in the early 80s, and Weather Report is on it. It never came out on CD though.

    Anyone who came here after listening to Geoffrey Keeser's episode on Steve Davidson's podcast?

      I heard the podcast with Geoffrey Keezer, and that was an interesting comment he made about Zawinul using the synth arpeggiator at one point in this performance. It sounded so earthy and natural you wouldn't have known he was using it just by listening. It just flowed naturally.

    I always felt this ... the way Vic Bailey holds the bass makes me feel very uncomfy😅😅
