DIY MARATHON ALERT! For this week's video I decided to compile some of my favorite thrift flip DIYs that I created since the beginning of my TH-cam journey. I really went through and came up with a solid list of projects that are affordable and aesthetic AND easy to achieve. In this video, you will see different painting techniques, some introductory wood working projects, upholstery and fabric projects. But my favorite kind of thrift flip is to not only alter the piece aesthetically but to give it a completely new life and purpose from what it was initially, such as the candle wall sconce or the wooden linked object. But even still, my favorite thrift flip to date HAS to be the nearly 8 ft tall faux olive tree I recently created. Make sure you let me know in the comments which one inspired you and don't forget to tag me on IG if you happen to recreate any of these projects. Thank you all for your amazing support and positivity!
    Xo,
    Fia

Yay! Finally, I found a thrift-flipping DIY TH-camr that doesn’t just slap white paint on everything and make it farmhouse and French cottage! 😅Thank you, Fia! I really like your decoration style.

Yes, Ive been hunting for the same as well. I enjoy some of what I can learn of techniques even if I dont like the style. But its starting to hurt seeing so much "lets paint it white and slightly distress it!" paints jobs.

Those "serrated scissors" are called Pinking Shears, and they are a MUST for anyone wanting to do serious sewing. I use mine to keep things from fraying when my Serger isn't working, and to trim curved seams so they'll lay nice.
You do beautiful work--glad I found your channel!

Wow, I’m so glad your video popped up on my side bar!!! So many do, but they end up not really being “high end” and usually end up being sloppy and cheap looking. I am a new subscriber now! Can’t wait to look up your past videos. I do a lot of thrift flips, high end DIY’s and furniture upcycling, but am very picky and meticulous. Happy to have found you. 😊

  • @LaughingInTiny
    @LaughingInTiny 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Love these... DIY doesn't have to be cheap looking. I've done a ton of these trees with set design and if you take the time to do it properly, they can be stunning. It's worth taking the time to do the details properly. Also if anyone wants to use rocks or something heavier in the base, do the same thing with fill (recycling etc) and then lay a few layers of cardboard at the top and the stones will be stable.
The "serrated" scissors are called Pinking Shears for anyone who wants to track down a pair. They reduce the fraying of fabric edges so they come in quite handy for DIYers who use fabrics.

I just love your beautiful minimalistic vibe! So breath taking. If u ever get tired of any of these makeovers and the ornaments on your tree & the different color of ribbons, HEY! I'M OVER HERE! JUST STUNNING. I loved all of these. Great tip on the tree collar. Some corrugated metal from Lowe's/Home depot etc... would look amazing as a tree collar. [You could even use a cardboard box For the base to fit in and drape the faux fur blanket or the faux leather material as a cover for the cardboard box. You could cut the cardboard into a oval/round base and glue strands of wooden beads around the cardboard. You could use Yarn. Faux fur. Even a planter like you had earlier for the Olive tree. I would love to get some tin, that is thin metal and have 2 tree collars and then Have a large 4 1/2' then 2 ft and then 1 1/2 ' gingerbread family. Love your style. 😊

    *ADVICE* for MidCentury Modern Bench
Before adding any Stain or Paint and when you said “Obviously it’s not perfect” you would have seen an incredible difference with just an easy fix by putting a PRIMER first! The primer penetrate the pores in the wood, allowing any stain or paint you add 😮😮on, to look even and leaves you w. a profesional finish! Regardless… it looks incredible! Nice job! I bet your husband was in awe 🤣🤍

I just absolutely love all of the thrift flips! I navigate to the wood section of Goodwill and other thrift stores, too! There is just something about wood that draws me in! LOL!!! Thank you for describing your processes in such detail! You are so inspiring! Roadside finds are the best! I found a small antique-looking cream-colored loveseat that fits my studio apartment just perfectly, among other finds. I recently found an antique wrought iron metal chandelier that I gave to my mom to restore for her art studio. I just think it's wonderful to breathe new life into old items and furniture, and your creations are just beautiful.

    The Faux Olive Tree:
Yeah; I would have painted or stained the central branch/trunk before adding the smaller branches.
Also, I wonder if it would have gone quicker if you'd have used a graphic artist's pencil sharpener to pre-narrow the thicker branches before adding to the predrilled holes.
    The resulting tree is beautiful.
    The Olive Jewelry Box:
Any time you have to hammer-in really tiny nails, try using angled needle-nose pliers to hold them while hammering.
What would be better is replacing the tiny nails with tiny screws.
Whether you use tiny nails or tiny screws, it's always safest to drill even tinier pilot holes, to avoid splitting the wood.
Also, next time apply a piece of tape across the center of the fastener's bottom piece, then measure to find the center point (you can lay it on graph paper to find it) and mark top and bottom edge center. Next, apply a broad piece of tape to the center of the box surface you're applying it to, then mark center from edge corners and mark a line top to bottom. Now match up the fastener center to the box face center; do this with both fastener parts connected, so you position it correctly on the box. Mark the nail/screw holes. Drill the pilot holes, then remove all tape from all the parts. Nail/screw the bottom fastener piece to the box, then repeat with the top latch piece of the fastener.
    The Mid-Century Wood Bench:
Great find, your instincts were good!
However, my first move would be to wipe it down with some soap and water, let it dry, then use a stripper to remove the old paint.
There's no way you can sand a wooden item, especially with an electric sander, and avoid deforming the shape of the wood spindles and scooped seat. Strip it first, then VERY CAREFULLY sand it by hand.
Afterwards you can evaluate the wood, to determine if it's entirely of one quality specie of wood or cobbled from several inexpensive woods. Quality wood means finishing with stain and hand-rubbed beeswax or shellac, as you would an antique. Mixed or scrap wood means paint, maybe embellish with colonial painted decorations. Your roadside find should have been painted, either a black semi-gloss or matte black (maybe with embellishments) or a shabby-chic white or off-white.
I wouldn't have used a varathane finish; it's not good for wood longevity. It seals the wood completely, but wood still dries out and the varathane blocks any remoistening the wood. Eventually, the wood will crack. But if the intent is only a decade or two of use before hitting the landfill, it'll do ok.
I have to say that Branches-&-Frame 'headboard' is genius! So very cool!
    Quick tip:
Most adhesives are oil-based. Gum is dehydrated oil and makes a really good adhesive, so most adhesives are made from oil. Heat melts oil; that's why heat works on making contact paper stick better.
Here's the tip: Use your blow dryer to remove labels and price stickers. It heats up the adhesive and the sticker comes up pretty easily. Whatever you can't pick up with the removed sticker, use undiluted dish detergent to clean away the residue before rinsing.

I really liked every one of your diy's, you're very creative. Don't you just love how you can take an idea and make it your own, in your own color scheme, like the canvas painting. I've actually thought of doing before that w/my own color palet and seeing yours has inspired me to go for it! Thank you so much for sharing your creations and God bless y'all and baby!!😇

Where have you been? I love to thrift! I see some people thrift, but they don’t show how they redo their thrifts! The only ones that I’ve found that shows is GingerChicRehab, Savannah (I can’t remember her name and there’s one more! The rest just show thrifting. I need ideas. I have a building full of things I’ve thrifted and NO idea what to do with them. In fact my husband says that I’m not buying anything else until I make somethings and sell them to recoup some of the $$ I’ve spent! Yes, it’s that’s bad. Lol
I love your style! Thank you!! You now have a new sub that TH-cam recommended!

Very clever! For the watercolor clock project, I wanted to help you out. There is something called watercolor ground that you can paint on anything to create the right texture to then use watercolor. So rather than the acrylic paint, you would use the ground, which comes in a warm white or a bright white. Also, those cheap watercolor palettes can be a problem. The colors aren’t bright because they don’t have much pigment but worse is that it will fade quickly.
