Testing Several Different 45LC Cast Bullets in the Taurus Judge

  • I recently tested several different cast bullets in my EAA Big Bore Bounty Hunter single action. I am now testing those same bullet in my Taurus Judge. I loaded these with Alliant Unique powder. I am trying to determine if larger bullets will help to increase accuracy in these revolvers.

    LoB - That was a huge information disclosure for all of us on those Judge chambers. You are the first to present this information and clearly presented...This video is really a must for all owners of Judges or Governors interested in shooting lead bullets...We can't have Judges or Governors in CA. Best to ya, FC Steve

    • @LoadsofBacon
      @LoadsofBacon  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks FC! It appears these really are built to shoot the .410 with the .45 being a little bit of an after thought. It would certainly be hard to build it to best meet the needs of both; I can understand why they chambers are the way they are.
      The gun laws in California are certainly a very sad state of affairs.

    Finally a video with actual valid information. I was going to purchase the same judge in video to shoot only the .45 colt ammo, now i'm having second thoughts about it.

    • @LoadsofBacon
      @LoadsofBacon  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Judge is a lot of fun, and it seems to shoot jacketed 45 Colt fine (but a good bit higher than the sights). If I were going to purchase a revolver just for 45 Colt, I would get something other than the Judge.

    • @andywilson8698
      @andywilson8698 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The judge is a fun gun , surprisingly the 22lr , 380 ,9mm shoot pretty decently out of it . But you have to get the rifled version , and the 32acp that can be shot out it as well was pretty accurate for being smooth bore .

    I have the Magnum Judge with a 3" barrel. Every .45 Colt load I use in it shoots high. Windage is usually really good though. Hornady .45 Colt FTX LeverEvolution 225 grain bullets over Power Pistol at about 800 FPS work the best for me. Still shoot high, but with reasonable grouping.

    Very nice video! I’m getting the Judge with a 6 1/2 inch barrel and I do want to develop some custom loads. Looks like you like the 8 or 9 grs of Unique best. Would you recommend some high quality Hornady FX or Berger bullets? And are you affiliated with The Reloaders Network? My last order from them came with a credit card receipt from Loads of Bacon.

      I've heard reports of the 6 1/2 model performing well with cast bullets.

    • @LoadsofBacon
      @LoadsofBacon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don't cast and reload your own I would stick with jacketed bullets in the judge, and plan for them to shoot above point of aim. The sights seem to be calibrated for the .410 loads.

    The Scofield's surprised me but I 'almost' saw what I expected with the oversized casts....if there wasn't such a leading issue I would imagine that they will do even better if tested alone and with a 'moderate charge' behind them.

    That was interesting. Very Strange with the one or two tumbles in a series. Makes me wonder if one of the cylinders is larger than the others. I usually just have my 4" 2.5 410 Judge stoked with the shot shell in #4-6's and buckshot. Mostly I use it for varmint control.

    • @LoadsofBacon
      @LoadsofBacon  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      All five measure the same, at least at the mouth, (or at least they did before they were filled with lead deposits). Your shot shells for varmint control are a perfect use case for the Judge.

    I've experimented for years with .45/.410 derringers. The most accurate lead bullet I've come up with is a 255 grain hollow-point full-wadcutter with a hollow back, pushed by Pyrodex. I form the bullets myself in the crimper end of a $15 .45 colt Lee loader, with a large ball bearing on either end of the bullet. So the bullet is quite long, and the leading 20% of the bullet is the same diameter as the case. This combined with the hollow back makes it go nice and straight down the chamber, with a great seal to the bore. With such a great seal, no cylinder gap, and 2.5cc's of pyrodex, it's a potent round. Expands to about .60 caliber in water, and flattens the primer completely. I'd estimate it's moving around 900 fps.

    • @LoadsofBacon

    I have some penta HP 45 colt bullets (from MP molds) I want gel tested. If I send them to you, could you do a gel test on them? They are powdercoated and swaged to .454-.455” Some are filled with hot glue to help expansion. If they expand out of your single action, they should expand/fragment out of a 16” lever gun?

    I have one of those $6 cleaning kits from Wal-Mart that stows in its own cylindrical handle. The common caliber brushes are wrapped with chore boy. It lives in my range bag. You should have one too. It would have saved most of this range trip's data from question to do a quick scrub anytime leading starts. Mine has saved several range trips when a new test load was gumming up a gun. No point wasting test loads on a leaded barrel. Also handy for the occasional squib load and when a friend has a gun that is never cleaned. (I also keep a 3' x .25" brass rod from a hardware store @ $7 in the trunk of my car. Squibs are always a possibility when working up a new load in uncharted territory. A stuck projectile on the first rung of a ladder can waste a whole range day. Ask me how I know.... Plus I have saved a few people who had squibs at public shooting areas. It is not as rare as people think.)

    • @LoadsofBacon
      @LoadsofBacon  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I normally have a bore snake in my bag, and I often have a rod for squib loads (though I fortunately have never needed it). I didn't have either with me, and this was the worst case of leading I've ever had. Prior planning prevent poor perf..... Stupid Ed Murphy and his crazy laws.

    • @GunFunZS
      @GunFunZS 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep. My worst waste was range testing a ladder consisting of almost 200 rounds of 30-06 for accuracy at 100 yards. Careful loading. Careful shooting. It started raining, and I cleaned up. Drove the hour or so home, and realized that I'd left my targets showing what worked or didn't at the range. All that work completely lost. I know that I was doing about 2moa before the ladder, and hoped to find the accuracy nodes at a couple power levels in two projectiles. I had some hornady bullets as a control shot up too, so I could compare my best with quality jacketed to my best with my cast. I still don't know the best those could do. I haven't made the opportunity since.

    That was some bad leading , probably from the .452 tests . I like to shoot some jacketed bullets between test groups of cast bullets so the possible leading doesn't affect the cast bullet results . I'm sure some of those groups are much better than they look due to the leading issue .

    • @LoadsofBacon
      @LoadsofBacon  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like to do the same with the jacketed bullets, but I only have the Hornadys, and I forgot them at home. I love the shooting sports, but scrubbing lead out isn't my definition of fun.
      I'm betting I could get better groups by going straight to the large bullets with a clean barrel, but I think I'll save the cast bullets for the single action.

    The proper fit is so important, bullets can't go through the barrel canted or leave the crown uneven. The seal at that point of going through the cylinder throat and forcing cone should be true all the way to the release from the mussel for an even mussel blast. 90% of bullets tumble because they are gyroscopically unbalanced as they make their way to the target. anyway, I feel that the Judge pistol is a home defense firearm with the buckshot as the primary loading. Good video bacon as always, You have a detailed way with your presentations and you tell us the it isn't all about target shooting. Dave.

      To avoid a short barrel shotgun designation, Taurus has to make a rifled barrel, but the rifling is incredibly shallow with a low twist rate. It may not stabilize the 45LC correctly.

    I can drop a .452" cast bullet clean through each of my cylinders. Despite that, my gun really likes 230gr plated RN bullets over 7.5 grains of Unique. Soft shooting, and about 720fps. Sub 2" groups at 10 yards, double action. This is with a 3 inch barrel.
    By the way, Dawson Precision makes sights for the Judge that will cure that shooting high problem.

  • @jcm4590
    @jcm4590 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @LoadsofBacon

    What blend of lead did you cast your bullets out of? If they're too hard, they will cause leading because they don't obturate .

    • @LoadsofBacon
      @LoadsofBacon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct, bullets that are too hard can lead to leading.
      I don't remember the exact alloy used for these, but it was fairly soft. They were probably in the neighborhood of 9 BHN.
      Obturation on a solid-based bullet at 14K psi or less will not make up for a gap of a few thousandths of an inch.

  • @sprungmonkey6inches
    @sprungmonkey6inches 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Got a question about 45acp pressures in the revolver cylinder. Since the cylinder was chambered for 410 shells, and the cylinder's have a snugger lumen size at the end of the barrel, how does that affect a 45acp round when going through the cylinder to the barrel?
    I read that 45 colt pressures are around 14k vs 21k for 45acp rounds.
    Where would the failure (if any) be for the revolver?
    In the cylinder where the barrel mates with, or at the barrel opening?
    I don't own a judge, but am trying to understand the taurus engineering of the cylinder and it's restrictions on 45 acp. I'm assuming it's where the cylinder meets the barrel.
    the Governor is not fitted for a 3 inch 410 shell, but allows 45 acp rounds. what's the engineering difference for the cylinder?

    @loadsofbacon what would happen if you put a 454 casull in a regular judge?

    • @LoadsofBacon
      @LoadsofBacon  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a "step" or little "ledge" inside the chamber that will not allow it to fit. The 454 case is too long. If you were able to load a case that did fit, such as 45 Colt, to 454 pressures you risk all sorts of damage to the firearm including possibly blowing the chamber to pieces and sending shrapnel flying in many directions.

    What’s your bore diameter? Maybe the forcing cone could be tapered to be more gradual maybe accept larger slugs like .458? Maybe you have a lot of jump on the lans of the rifle if causing the bullet to skip the rifling essentially shearing lead down the bore.

    • @Bloodspark813
      @Bloodspark813 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @honorb4glory606
    @honorb4glory606 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wish everyone could use my custom "musket ball" .45 colt loads. They're 250 grain soft lead, hollow point, hollow back, full wadcutter, with a wax nose. I call them "musket balls" because they're soft lead, they immediately expand to .58 caliber, and they use pyrodex (the lower pressure prevents the hollow backs from shredding). Because of the hollow ends, the bullet is very long, which helps keep it straighter in the .410 chamber before hitting the rifling, which keeps it accurate, despite being a pure lead round.

    • @LoadsofBacon
      @LoadsofBacon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    @miketreen7403 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Just a thought, but since the cylinder has such over sized Chambers, what about extending the overall length of the cartridge? By doing so the bullet wouldn’t be bouncing around as much in the cylinder before it hit the forcing cone. Your pressures would change thus your velocity would be lower, but might be something to try. It would be similar to setting the bullet closer to the lands in a rifle. Like I said, just a thought. Once again great video like always!

      Thanks Mike! I like the thought, but I'm not quite sure how to do it on this revolver. I can't use a longer case, and extending the bullet out to the end of the cylinder would require a bullet that is excessively long.

      Question for you. When you crimp your oversized 45’s did you use a lee factory crimp die? If so did it change the diameter of the bullets? Thinking about getting one for my 44’s but concerned about loosing bullet diameter. My Ruger takes.432 cast.

    • @LoadsofBacon
      @LoadsofBacon  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did use the Lee FCD. I never pulled any bullets after crimped, but I don’t suspect it messed with the bullets. It certainly didn’t mess with the front driving band that is just above the crimping groove. If I were you, I’d go for it, and then start troubleshooting if you run into any issues.

  • @abitnutz6747

    I'm not sure you're doing yourself any favors by making the bullets so oversized. They're going to be swaged down to .453 by the cylinder throat no matter if they start at .453 or .457. However, by starting so large you may be overly deforming the bullets and they may be in worse shape when they enter the forcing cone. This really causes leading as you found out. I had the same problems with an S&W Model 25-5 in 45LC with oversized chamber throats. It had .458 chamber throats and if I sized to .458 it left a streak of lead down the barrel. I never got it to shoot great. The best I could do is was cut the forcing cone to 11 degrees and polish it really well, then cast the bullets to .454. That helped a lot. It went from horrible to OK and didn't lead.

      Any factory round that is .45 Colt should be safe in your Judge. You say both heavy and fast. I'm not sure what your criteria are for heavy or fast, but in general terms, as the bullet weight goes down, the velocity goes up. I doubt you'll find anything that has a terminal performance difference noticably better than that 250g/840fps load.
      The Judge design will often result in leading if you use cast bullets. I would suggest sticking to something with a jacket.

      Cast lead won’t hurt your barrel at all, but you may end up with a little bit of what is referred to as “leading”, which is a small amount of lead that stays in your barrel. All it would require is a little more strenuous cleaning than normal.

    • @jimhelton5731
      @jimhelton5731 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A big factor would be the type of bullet. Some will loose the driving bands and could lead to overpressure issues if sized to much. Just food for thought always good to start on the lower side of a charge load for testing. Lead composition will make a pretty big difference on how difficult it will be to run them through the die.

      For 8.0 gr Unique, the FWC = 875 fps, the SWC = 890. 8.5 gr, FWC = 933, SWC = 940. 9.0 gr, FWC = 976, SWC = 991.

      This revolver is not junk, but it's not designed to work well with .45 Colt cast or swagged bullets. I works fine with kacketwd bullets, and it works very well with .410 ammo.
      I've had a model 66 for almost 20 years and it has been a great revolver. I have a Rossi rifle that was made by Taurus. It has been great.
      Previously you complained about Taurus copying other companies products, but you also say "give me a Smith or a Ruger". Much of Ruger's business model has been taking other people's designs.
