To save water, I keep a pitcher in my bathroom. I hold it under the water while my shower water is heating up and use the cold water that would’ve been wasted for things like washing dishes and watering plants!

I do something similar but I capture the extra shower water in big bucket and wash my clothes in it. I admit though I didn’t originally do this to be less wasteful, I just didn’t feel like driving to the laundromat. However, now I’ve discovered I can wash them with a small amount of water and I like it better (and I don’t have to drive!)

Here in the US, even if you put a no junk mail sign on your box, the paper still gets wasted(the postal service just disposes for you). So I have instead called companies as mailers come in and asked to be taken off their mailing lists. This avoids any paper being printed for me in the first place.

    • @leslieoscar

Yes, calling or emailing to be taken off the mailing list is the way to go. Hopefully, eventually, everybody will do this and the companies that send us this junk will no longer produce this wasted advertising

We have a huge garden. All veg waste is composted. We burn all of our paper waste in the fire-pit, add it to the fireplace ash and it goes into the garden or into the compost. Virtually zero waste there. Cardboard is all used in the garden as a weed block. I use it in both the flower and veggie garden beds, water it down and cover with mulch and it disappears in a year. The worms LOVE IT!

We put our tv, modem and other electronics plugged into a power bar and turn that off every night. Also, small appliances are only plugged in when in use. These all drain electricity when left plugged in. Saved us about $100 per month on our energy bill when we first started doing this. A lot of savings!

This is so reminiscent of Indian lifestyles! Or any old age lifestyle for that matter, our previous generations had a simpler, more sustainable way of living which sadly today's world has forgotten. This wasteful consumerism bothers me, we'll choke the life out of this planet!

When I depended on tank water only, my parents made me use a cup to brush teeth. Half fill cup and sip to gargle mouth and spit. Then rinse toothbrush in what is left in cup.
Recycle kitchen scraps in a worm farm.
If possible hand wash smalls and light items. I think every laundry needs 2 or preferably three washing tubs. Wash in one then rinse in another. You can use buckets. Get exeecise, save water and power. I would like to bring back twin tub washing machines. One can regulate how long you wash and how much water you use and how you spin dry. More time-consuming but also very therapeutic. Makes one think and organise time. Use one's brain. I am looking for a peddle powered washing machine. Exercise while washing. Do in your garden using hose and drain grey water in compost or on garden. I can only find them being made for countries with no electricity. 100 years ago few people had electricity. Electricity and oil have created a lot of pollution. Humans need to go back to basics and live simply.
Never ever let the banks take away our freedom to use cash. That is giving up all our rights and trusting computers and strangers in corporations with use of our wages. When the governments and banks stop us using cash how do we feed our children if there is an electricity outage and our phones don't work? We don't. Collapse of families. People will starve. Human population culling without war. But the military will be used against it's own peoples to protect the powerful economic financiers and their computer files. Once they have herded us into overcrowded cities it will be survival of the strongest.
Revelations. God help me understand the greed ib our world.

I swapped to bamboo cotton buds and make my own crochet dishcloths to use for cleaning. I clean with a mixture of vinegar, water and essential oils like clove and orange or lemon. I use stainless steel scrubbers and bamboo dish brushes to wash up. Love your tips!

    1. No junk mail sign in the mail box
    2. Change lightbulbs to LED lightbulbs, or burn candles instead of using electricity
    4. Buying rechargeable batteries
    5. Repair clothes and things that need fixing around the house
    6. Use glass, tin and cardboard when possible and eliminate or reduce drastically the use of plastic
    7. Bring produce bags to collect fruit in the supermarket
    8. Use the quick wash in the washing machine and hang the clothes to dry instead fusing a dryer
    9. Homemade compost and make your own garden or plant herbs in your apartment

I use a cup when I brush my teath, that way no clean water goes down the drain and I limit my water use to one cup. We also turn of the water in the shower when we lather up with shampo or bodywash. If we use the dryer we save the water that comes out and give it to the plants. We have bokashi instead of compost, but I do want a compost one day to all of the larger things like leaves and grasscuttings.

I think another help would to be sure we use fabrics with natural fibers, I try had to do so, which is a challenge when most are now petroleum base fabrics. But I have had more success at thrift stores. Natural fibers thus have many stages of recycle possibilities. And I have learned that air drying extends the life of our garments. If you do use a dryer the lint can be saved up as a fire starter tool in the fire place.

A great way to make use of peelings or the ends/tops of veggies before composting is to save them in a large container in the freezer. Once the container is full you can boil them up in a large pot, strain and you’ll end up with the most amazing veggie broth! Then they can be composted, but you use up every bit of goodness first!!

Take all the clothes and cut them into 6" squares, and when I have enough I can make a pillow, throw, blanket, use in quilting, or even make some new clothes, its a challenge I love to dive into. Hello, I've just started watching your videos although they'd been popping up in my recommends for a few months now. I'm randomly going through your videos just now and was wondering if there was a good starting point? Even more curious as to what made you begin your journey?

You could try out the playlists on the youtube channel home page...
I was always into natural and healthy living and when I was working as a nurse I got more inspired to share a healthy lifestyle... I also love diy and crafts so making the videos was a way of sharing what I love to do...

If you live in the USA, putting a no junk sign on your mailbox may actually be illegal depending on the kind it is and is also likely to be ignored. There’s a smartphone app called Paperkarma which is helpful. I think Unroll[.]me is also an option for some types of junk.
Talking with the postal worker helps too. They’re usually quite friendly.

We have a ‘no junk mail’ sign on our letterbox and we still get tons of it. The mailers are ignoring it. How do we overcome this? I’m guessing there’s a commission style system in place to prove they’ve been mailed.

I save all the glass containers and use them to put rice ,beans , pasta and any thing else I want to keep and store . I try not to buy pre packaged anything . If its a box or cardboard I reuse or recycle . Everything gets refused ,repurposed or recycled in this house . Food waste gets put in a container and put in a compost container with fresh soil. This gets put in the plants and flowers outside . Fruit peels get turned into marmalade , spoiled fruit gets turned into a great glycolic acids peel for the skin . My parents love their bottled water , but that also gets recycled . I have a trash can for recycled materials. They get sold once a week . I love the idea of using plastics for crafts , but I also know that if you paint it . It is no longer recyclable, so I won't do it. I've also cut out cleaning supplies and make my own as I need it . It's funny ,but I waste no money on anything . I buy bulk every year and it saves my parents money . They still don't get how its done , but they enjoy less trips to the grocery store . I need to learn to re-style clothes and make soap .

These are good tips, but I am going to respectfully disagree that it saves waste to put a "no junk mail" sign on your mailbox. It may save waste in your own home, but the person who delivers the flyers, will only throw them in the garbage themselves, because now they have extra. :)

    • @FairylandCottage

yes indeed they do. Jeremy Irons told me years ago at a talk to take all the packaging off at the supermarket... the more that we do this the more the supermarket has to deal with the rubbish and it will force them to change their ways.
