She lives exactly like my grandmother. My parents are laughing at such a lifestyle but complain about high costs in the city. Back to nature it is. I'm investing in vintage clothes and some clothing styles from 1800-1900 from now on
Yes!! My mom uses to laugh at me when I explain to her how I'm doing with low waste, especially about menstrual clothing pads, she says it was the way their grandma's did.
Oh my goodness I want to come and live at your house! It’s so peaceful and relaxing 🙏🏻 I’m quite new to trying to be zero waste, but already I’m using a flask in the morning to save boiling the kettle during the day. I’m composting and trying an eco friendly shampoo bar too. In the transition stage with that at the moment 🤮 I find it so relaxing finding new ways to protect the environment and your channel has given me the inspiration and tips that I need. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and have a lovely week 😊🙌🏻💕
Hi Niamh, I reused my old duvet cover for napkins and kitchen towels they are fantastic to dry fruits and vegetables , my old towels, I sew into small squares and use as my dish washing sponges, it doesnt lather as much but it does the job. thanks for the ideas in this videos, I absolutely love it. I do wish that one day shopping in bulk and bring your own bags and bottles are created more around the world, sometimes the goods in the package itself is too much even for me to consume and they go really bad fast too. love you Niamh xo
I used your idea of turning an old basket into a shelf in my bathroom! It looks lovely and I didn't have to go buy a new shelf to store my bathroom bits. Thank you so much!
We love how you upcycled different things around your home. We have taken cloth curtains and turned and them into cloth napkins also take old towels and old T shirts and turned them into rags.
The supermarkets in Japan have most things in plastic! Ugh! The saving grace are the JA (Japan Agriculture) Farmers Markets where i can use my own bags. Thank you for your tips on reuse! I have old Tupperware that I replaced with glass. Now, I will use them for organizing my drawers instead of buying bins.
Where I work, we have a ton of heat treated wood pallets, which is perfect for me, since that wood is safe to use, and will now become our raised beds for next year. This way we can use even more of our unused back yard for a significantly larger garden. Our leech field takes up most of the back yard, so raised beds is the best option. I'll be able to get some compost mostly free and will probably have to buy some too. Today we saw that one of the local schools for their fundraiser is selling compost and doing something else zero waste, which is amazing to see in the middle of nowhere!
Hey Niamh! When I joined, well over a year ago, after watching your "no poo" video, I knew this community was going to grow. Now almost at 80k!!! Woohoo!!! 👏🎉 I enjoyed today's Sunday video while sitting on the dock, on the lake at my cottage, so many great ideas!! Thanks for sharing! Tiina 🤗🏠❤🇨🇦
this past week i reorganized my sewing room. A very nice metal table base and old wooden table top (with a hole cut in it for a sewing machine) were no longer needed. The table top was cut down and combined with the base and is now an additional work table for the garage. :)
LOVE this channel! I have been reusing every container. I have been making my own diy bath and body products for over a year now. My own candles too. I save all citrus skins to use in my diy. I have already made 3 of your diy projects and I only subscribed a week ago! Thank you so much!
Tracy Werner ah Tracy thanks so much for subbing and making products! You definitely have got off to a flying start! Hehe :-) It’s really lovely to have you here!
I am going out of my way to source plastic free alternatives now. I placed my first order from a package free shop and I try my best to buy all my fruit and veg loose with no packaging. A little tip that I can give everyone is this: if you need to buy something new, if you cannot get it second hand, look for eco friendly alternatives. Living in the UK gives us the luxury of being able to source eco friendly products by just doing a bit of a google search. For example, I lost my hairbrush, so instead of just buying one from the shop, I bought a bamboo one online. Just by making small changes like this can really help the planet. Thanks again Niamh - your videos are good for the soul and your channel is seriously one of my favourites!❤️
Love your channel, @Fairyland Cottage! Just discovered it! I loooove my doTERRA essential oils and also make all my own household, beauty, and wellness products, too! I literally JUST repurposed my mother-in-law's old iron table and 4 chairs (dingy, so I just put a vintage tablecloth over it with a nice plant in the center!) RATHER THAN going out and buying a new set! Kudos to you for a beautiful, useful, and informative channel! xoxo - Tara
Great tips💛 My simple repurposing idea- I use my deep round jewelry box to store items that would normally sit out on my night stand. I’ve done away with the clutter.
@@FairylandCottage You mentioned this tip in one of your videos and I've done the same. Found a wooden box in a charity shop and it now sits next to my bed with all the clutter inside!
We have a greengrocers near me which have the refill hoppers. And one can also refill household cleaning and laundry liquids. And just around the corner, there is an Asian shop with the most colourful display of fruit and veg’ outside that I’ve seen outside a market. And no packaging. All right on the doorstep almost. This is in Norwich, England. Fabulous!!!!!!
I am truly grateful for the work you put on making your videos. Because of you, I have made few changes here and there to reduce my plastic consumption. By the way, your orange chocolate muffins are marvelous. I would love to see more videos throughout the week (I know this pace is how you balance life but...) really interest in nutrition, today I am going to make your soda bread.
Thank you for the lovely message... good to hear you are happy with changes you have made.. and that you like the choco orange muffins... let men now how you go with the soda bread.
You show such great tips on how to reuse things. I have made a few changes here at home in Georgia. My husband thought I had lose it, but once he saw how much money we saved and how our trash was much less he changed his my. That was not using paper goods and using real fabric for our cleaning needs. He ask me why have we not done this earlier. So you can teach an old dog new tricks ( just a old saying we use here at home ) . Thanks I can't wait to see what else you have to share. Love from the south USA.
We also use that saying here also... people can change... I did and so do many eh! I also love the amount of money saved and spending that on more valuable things and experiences..
Inspiring and lovely, thank you :-) The shutters and red windows look amazing! I am saving vinegar bottles so we can bottle our own washing liquid. Hi Madeleine, well done.. it sounds like you are doing a great job. I find your challenge great... it can make us see actually how much we waste and wasted in the past. I started to see that I really needed very little and when I needed something I could get in the charity shop... Blessing to you and family in Australia, Niamh
I always buy used dish towels. They still last many years, when they are thin I cut them up and use them in place of disposable Swiffer floor cloths. They pick up just as much as the disposables. Poke the 4 ends into the head of the Swiffer mop head and it works a treat. I also use old dish towels cut up as rags. Once they are past that life they get burned in the fire pit and put in the garden with the rest of the ashes. Rarely do I ever use paper towels. I am a thrifter from being a teen. Reusing is a lifestyle my friends and I are all very comfortable with. 95% of my wardrobe is thrifted too. Great ideas here. The woodchip method you show works very well in a veg garden. I have used them for years. Cardboard is better wet down first though. Apparently the worms love the glue in the cardboard. U.S. based Tree trimming crews working around the neighborhood are happy to deliver wood chips free to you. Saves them time going to their dump sites. 😉 This is sort of a delicate subject but many women are now using this method. For well worn soft fabrics like heavy flannels and dish towels is the use of a bathroom “personal cloth” system at least for ladies and girls going number 1. Some folks take this even further. It saves on using toilet paper, which most are bleached and/or chemically treated which is not particularly healthy, especially considering the part of the body they are used on and not flushing every time we urinate saves water and the chemicals used to process water. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and getting us to think about the enormity of our waste 👍🏻
I love your cottage. I am retiring in two months (Ontario Canada) and I recently downsized to a very small house in the country. I think your ideas are excellent. You can also use that shredded paper for compost. Thanks for all of your stuff. Peace and love 💕
The shutters are beautiful. I love the color also. I need to start reusing jars, etc. I usually place them in the recycle bin but I see that I could use them for grains, pasta, etc. Love your videos. I hope you have an amazing week!

Hi. Hope you are well. I absolutely love your channel. Having started a few years ago to have and be more natural and take a more simplistic route for health and living coming across your channel is lovely. Thank you. Oh my son likes watching too 😊
Some things which I can think of right now... 1. old toothbrush to clean things. it can also be used for painting/art for that spray effect. 2. old clothes can be donated or if they are torn and can't be worn then they can be used to create doormats etc. 3. old plastic bottles can be spray painted and/or can be painted with acrylic paints to give them a new life. 4. eggshells can be used to drive away lizards from the rooms of your house. just hang them or keep them somewhere and see the magic. 5. old plastic or any other containers which are broken or those which you don't use can be painted and used as planters. especially the paint buckets. they are very strong and won't break.
I had a similar idea recently. I was having a family gathering and but were low on seating I created a comfy corn by our wall with sheets and fairy lights hung around and then used old pillowcases and packed hem with paper sheddings that were ready for the recycling 😂 Were flat as a pancake at the end (think everyone was too drunk to notice tbh 🤣) but did the job for the evening!
Thank you for your wonderful ideas! I am trying to get started with living a cleaner more simple life! Your channel is a pleasure to watch! My first project is going to be moving all my bagged foods, like rice, cereals, etc into repurposed glass bottles, like from mayo and such! I’d like to start simplifying my personal cleaning products next. One thing at a time! ❤️❤️❤️

At the 1:28 mark with the wood chips is like the Back to Eden Garden method which is how we do are vegetable garden, The documentary is on TH-cam 'How to Grow a Vegetable Garden - Back To Eden Organic Gardening Film'. Love your channel. We became zero waste ten years ago from the Zero Waste Home site with Bea Johnson here in California.
My husband works at a sandwich shop where they use small cardboard bread boxes that would normally get thrown out. We use them around the house to hold things instead of buying expensive storage bins. I even bring them for storage at work. Since I work at a non-profit it is especially handy since we don't have a lot of money to throw around.

3. old plastic bottles can be spray painted and/or can be painted with acrylic paints to give them a new life.
4. eggshells can be used to drive away lizards from the rooms of your house. just hang them or keep them somewhere and see the magic.
5. old plastic or any other containers which are broken or those which you don't use can be painted and used as planters. especially the paint buckets. they are very strong and won't break.

It’s not as nice as it looks on screen! Haha :-)
We are living in a world full of excess. This is a welcome change to that
I had a similar idea recently. I was having a family gathering and but were low on seating I created a comfy corn by our wall with sheets and fairy lights hung around and then used old pillowcases and packed hem with paper sheddings that were ready for the recycling 😂 Were flat as a pancake at the end (think everyone was too drunk to notice tbh 🤣) but did the job for the evening!
haha brilliant! make use fo what we have... best fun and most creative...

Love your channel. We became zero waste ten years ago from the Zero Waste Home site with Bea Johnson here in California.
nice! I'll check that out..
I love that idea... I am always seeing how I can reuse something from work that is going to be thrown out!
Not sure how your videos got on my suggested feed but this is a very lovely content so I subscribed immediately 💖
You always have great tips! Thank you for showing how to do it!
Thanks Sarah!
Hehe I watched this with subtitles and it says "hello and welcome to fairyland college" which is appropriate : )
