My local council had free courses on natural cleaning, composting & general environmental initiatives, on completion you received either a worm farm or a natural cleaning kit, it was excellent, so progressive
I always put "used up" lemons (or lemon rinds) in a bag in the freezer to later use for cleaning. If I have organic lemons, I grate the rinds first and also freeze those to use in baking. My lemons get used 3-fold- first in tea or cooking, rind in baking, and what's left for cleaning ( and then they go in the compost)
I've just done the salt and lemon oven door cleaner and I couldn't be happier!! It took some elbow grease as it's been a while and it was pretty heavy muck but it's so much better now, and no nasty chemicals used!! I'm soooooo chuffed!!! Xxx
I am going to try these. But Im rinsing off my lemon peels and putting them in a jar of Vinegar to steep for 3 months. This makes a wonderfull household cleaner. Ive used lemon and orange vinegar now for 4 months and haven't looked back. It lifts all kinds of mess and leaves no steaks on the glass surfaces. Don't have to worry about wearing gloves or harsh chemical smells. 😃😃
At my house we like starting the year with the house really clean, and so on NYE here we were trying your lovely cleaning recipes. They work so well!!! I'm totally converted :) and the kitchen smelled so well from the lemon!
Thanks for keeping things so easy and simple!!! It really makes natural cleaning do-able instead of overwhelming! Another tip, pour salt in oven when cooking and food falls and burns. Then just sweep out afterwards.
1. Stainless steel sink: start with baking soda and rub it all over the sink with half a lemon rinse down with water and cloth 2. Hob and oven doors: Salt and lemon juice, let it soak for 10 minutes and scrub off all the dirt with a scrubber and rinse with water 4. General cleaner: half water, half vinegar and 20 drops of eucalyptus
Amazing video, as always!! I Kill bacterium off with boiling water. I also use my home-made lemon/mandarin vinegar and baking soda on everything!!! It's awesome 💥 That same vinegar is my current hair conditioner 💅🏾😊
Hi Hannah, thank you very much for watching the videos. The best I can do for washing up liquid is Ecover. It's a natural plant based washing up liquid. I buy it in a large container and then when it finished the shop refill my bottle so I'm cutting down on waste. Hope that helps. Love Nx
Fairyland Cottage Aaaggghhh! I was being too clever 😔I added Castile soap into the vinegar, water and eucalyptus oil and it’s VERY lumpy! It seems to be cleaning things fine and not blocking spray nozzle so far. So it’s usable; it just looks weird. 🥰
Ann Campbell 😆 oppss! Humm some sort of chemical reaction happened with the Castile soap. You could take it out and strain it through some cloth to remove lumps and then use.... 😁
my grandma used to keep all the lemon halves we already used and dip them in ashes and clean the dishes with them! she swore it was the only thing that truly cleaned stuff!
@@FairylandCottage Thieves essential oil is a combination of essential oils. There are many brands that carry it, some modify the combination. Hi i use homemade thieves cleaner. I blend clove bud, cinnamon bark, lemon, eucalyptus and rosemary essencial oils in a spray glass bottle with water. I like it specially in winter as its a very "cosy" scent. Confession on my weekly cleaning i still use commercial products then wipe off with my blend just to make sure i dont miss any nasties 🙈
Really enjoy your videos. I use homemade non toxic cleaner also. Love your accent, it is lovely! New to your channel so I haven't seen all the videos yet. Hoping you address cooking in some of them!
Hi Fairyland Cottage, I have just found it channel. Very cool indeed. What sort of vinegar do you use? Hi from South Derbyshire UK. Love Gaynor fairy xxx
Love your videos, especially the cleaning ones. I've been looking forever for simple and affordable recipes. Bought zero waste cleaning products are waaay too expensive! Anyway, I wanted to ask if you have any tips for cleaning a ceran stove? I don't think it's save to use steel wool on it.. Thanks xo
Thanks for the video! I was wondering how you keep your fruits + vegetables fresh in your fridge without wrapping them in plastic? They seem to wither quickly even inside cotton produce bags.
That’s fantastic Niamh! As a zero waste newbie, I’ve been wondering whether it is even possible for any natural cleaner to stand up to the baked on horrors of the oven! (I hate oven cleaners; they’re oozing with toxins and terrible for my asthma.) Will get cracking on the oven now...no excuse!
Ally Irvine ... haha yeah the natural stuff really works! I use to hate oven cleaners too. Let me know how you get on. There is nothing more satisfying than a clean home free of toxins and waste. X
Hello! Love your videos!! Do you use distilled vinegar? In the states they sell ‘white vinegar‘ commonly used for cleaning, but they don’t have that over here in the UK. All I can find Is distilled malt vinegar, so I’m guessing that’s what you use for your spray...? Thanks for your help! X
I just found your channel two days ago, and I LOVE it!! Thank you so much for your wonderful videos!! Do you have a non-toxic+zero waste solution for a dish soap (not for a dish washer, but for washing your dishes yourself by hand)? Thank you so much!! Love from Israel:)) Shiri.
Shiri Hershkovitz ah thanks! I'm delighted you found the channel and like! I don't have a video on it but you can make dish washing soap with soap nuts. You can also buy refills in good health food stores. X
Hi! I’ve noticed that you recycled your bottle (the green one for the all purpose cleaner). Was the spray nozzle from something else? I tried to find them online but only got some cheap ones in bulk. Thank you!
Hi mam.. I am ur new subscriber. Your videos are very simple and superb. And can you please make a video on getting rid of tiny house flies or fruit flies in the kitchen
makisoul yeah you could. Citric acid in lemon juice is suppose to be a stronger acid than acetic acid in vinegar so therefore should be better for stubborn stains but vinegar should work fine. Hope this helps. X
Ann guglielmino I have one using soap nuts on the zero waste playlist on the channel if that helps. Another idea people do is some Castile soap in water and use that.
Great videos! I've started to reduce my waste, and try to remove all the chemicals from our house, feeling inspired then suddenly noticed your cavacha, are you a devotee? HK
Aw great, I've binge watched your videos and subscribed lol. We are in Brighton in the UK, my husband Dharani (Ss) my son and myself (Ids). Hoping I can use some of your ideas for a less wasteful and toxic 2018, fab vids, keep 'em coming! X
sundari phillips ... ah nice. I was just in Brighton for the first time before Christmas. Lovely vibe there. :-) the zero waste eco life is very much in line with then simple living, higher thinking as Prabhupada said. Let me know if there is any video topic you'd like to see. X
Mixing water with vinegar makes a gently acidic liquid and I use it in my house too. But using salt is wasting food for me, since it works as nothing more than a scrubber... So I simply use a scrubber without wasting money and food. And mixing acid (vinegar or lemon) with alkali (soda) is chemically nonsense, since it creates chemically neutral salt with CO2 (this makes bubbles and people when see bubbles f.i. on soap think often that bubbles "cleans" and lack of bubbles "does not clean") and with water... So the only thing that washes the surfaces is water and the power of human muscles, combine with scrubbing effect of soda before it melts... So, yes, I use lemon and I use soda, but never combining both :)
Aye, not a good idea to use stainless steel on enamel. I find using an all purpose cleaner and a scrubbie like a loofah will take stains off gently. If you use an abrasive on enamel it will impart tiny scratches that will make it easier for stains and dirt to stick to on the next go around. Also do not use abrasives on shower surrounds and tubs made of fiber glass it will do the same damage.
So before we get all starry eyed about BiCarb let's just take a look at how it's made and it's Carbon Footprint. In parts of the world (eg the USA) it is mined on an industrial scale while here in Europe it is produced from an industrial process with lots of nasty bi-products. Here's a report to the House of Lords in the UK publications.parliament.uk/pa/ld200708/ldselect/ldeucom/197/197we05.htm. It may be marginally better than many household bleaches (tbh I don't know) - but just because you can dig it out of the ground doesn't make it environmentally friendly and here in the UK it's classed as an industrial chemical

We can call the video "Magic lemons" :) Thank you for so nice ideas!
I tried the lemon and salt on my stove today, it worked like a dream! So practical, easy, and natural! Thank you Niamh!
Lilac Lee ah brilliant! It’s magic. Don’t know why I used all those harsh chemicals for so many years!

Awesome! I love your videos!
I keep a small spray bottle of water/vinegar in my fridge door. That way it's on hand to wipe up spills as soon as they occur.
Elysa Francisco nice idea! I should do that cause my fridge is always getting so muddy from the veggies! 😆
What a great idea! Diane in NC

Loved this video - can't wait to see how you clean your bathroom. I have a hard time with cleaning our toilet naturally - it never feels clean to me!

I'll have to find a lemon alternative. They're a buck each where I'm from.
Chantal Said you could try lime or orange or grapefruit. Also if you can get citric acid cheap that can work too. X
Why not use vinegar?
i was wondering if anyone else would comment about how expensive lemons are:(
Do make some zero waste room freshener or DIYs which make your home smell nice videos 😊

steamer with some essential oil

Do you clean the inside of the stove the same as the stove door?
Silvia Arciniegas-Mosquera you can if it has stubborn stains. I usually just use some vinegar solution for cleaning the inside.
Hello. And how do you clean a refrigerator?
V S do you mean the freezer? I let it defrost when it is empty and then clean the same as fridge.
Hi! I’ve noticed that you recycled your bottle (the green one for the all purpose cleaner). Was the spray nozzle from something else? I tried to find them online but only got some cheap ones in bulk. Thank you!
yes I had a spray bottle from years ago and it fit the top so I was lucky... sometimes hairdresser supply shops have spray tops....
Can we use vinegar instead of lemon juice??
yes but the lemon will be more acidic and go through the dirt more than the vinegar.
👍🏻❣️
do you also wash off the vinegar/water cleaner? or do you just leave it on?
Sina Sophia I spray it on and then just wipe off with a cloth. Once dry there isn't a smell. X

Just a tip. It is not a good idea to put citruses (lemons, oranges, etc.) in the compost because they just go moldy
yeah they are harder to compost as the worms don't love them but they still decompose for us here, takes longer though
