I grew up in Annapolis and was a junior bridesmaid at a cousin's wedding in the Chapel in June1952; everything, including the music, was very impressive!

I finally got to see this phenomenal organ in person yesterday. The only pleasure that I missed was meeting Monte Maxwell and hearing him play it in person. Still, it was an unforgettable experience and I have quite a few photos of this beautiful instrument. This video was breathtaking! Bravo!💯

I got to meet Monte recently. He’s a fantastic organist, if you still haven’t met him, you definitely should. He gave me an entire tour of the organ, very cool stuff..

@@reedweldon2312 Did you happen to attend either of the two recent organ concerts at the Naval Academy? They were on April 8 and May 25, 2022. I attended both of them and got to talk to Monte on the 25th. He’s a very down-to-earth and amiable guy. I asked him if he ever considered doing a recording on that organ, and he said that it’s in the works. If he does, I’m definitely purchasing a copy.

Didn't know anything about this except that the Naval Academy is in Annapolis, MD.
    Nice instrument!!!
West Point is larger and all pipes, but it is still suffering from lightning damage and a slight earthquake that offset the tower several inches.

What is the stop that you used that sounded like thunder, or an explosion, right at about 1:12 or so? (you activated it with your right foot.) It sounded very cool and very loud!

Mr. Maxwell, very fine, as always. Any chance of the great Widor's Toccata?

The "thunder" stop is just a digital sound effect.

I love this instrument, but let's not deceive ourselves. There aren't 15,688 pipes; there are 15,688 "equivalent pipes." A lot of those "pipes" are digital sounds produced from woofers and tweeters. As far as we can tell (and the Academy authorities have been less-than-transparent about this), there are 105 ranks of pipes (the standard for measuring pipe organ size) -- which would work out to about 6,000 real, honest-to-goodness pipes that have air blowing through them. That's still a pretty large instrument, but not the mammoth one that 15K+ pipes would indicate.

This instrument has been rebuilt, enlarged, and significantly altered by Moller over many years, the last being in 1980. Records indicate 108 pipe ranks. Then in 2017, Walker Technical was brought in and suddenly the size shot up to 268 ranks. Even though the Chapel is an enormous room, I don't see how the addition of 160 "ranks" could occur without significant structural alterations to the pipe chambers and room. Before all the fuzzy digitizing, I was lucky enough to hear Virgil Fox on this organ.

@@larryb4170 The "ranks" are several very large speakers == some in the chancel & some in the rear balcony

Just what we need...another rendition of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in d minor. How about the Widor Toccata? These are great pieces, but haven't we burned them out enough? There is a whole world of written music out there that would inspire people so much. The Bach and Widor have been popularized and stereotyped so much that I can't even listen to more than about 2 or 3 seconds of either one. How about a little creativity and imagination here!

This was a demonstration for an average crowd of visitors who know little about organs.

  • @StoreeDenson

As I see in the comments how mostly everything on the organ is digital. The organ is doing quite a good job sounding like a hybrid. Also the great organ at West Point has a great Moller Organ but it is out of tune and most of the divisions in the Transept don't work. It would be better for this organ to have digital stops rather than le the organ die just like West Point.
