As someone who has survived Valley Fever in California from prospecting for gold with a drywasher I think it is an absolute shame that your host, who should know about Valley Fever in Arizona to not make sure you are wearing dust masks while digging and drywashing that desert dirt. Hopefully no one got sick from this trip. Safety is the most important part and Valley Fever is a killer.

Being stuck should teach you to always bring boards with cleats to place under tire after jacking truck up. Make a runway to get out. Requires 4 boards and many nails sticking out that are ground short. Works on sand or gravel. Also need a board for the jack.

I'm a native here in Arizona and and live in APACHE JUNCTION. Just now getting into gold prospecting. I'm familiar with and have worked open pit mining. Can't wait to pick up my dry washer tomorrow. I live 25 miles from saguaro lake, canyon lake and 15 minutes from the Superstition mountains. Hope to meet you guys sometime 😊😊 😊

Here is my idea for an awesome TV SHOW...........A small group of guys decide they want to go Gold mining ( Similar to Gold Rush, Discoveries most popular show ever ) But not Placer Gold they decide to go underground and mine Lode Gold ( Where most of the Gold is anyway ) So they go and explore a few abandoned mines looking for a good one. They find an awesome abandoned mine buy it, then form a mining company to raise funds to restore and operate this old mine. The stock is publicly traded on the stock market so the viewers or anyone for that matter can buy or sell shares at anytime. The show would be about the acquisition, development and operation of this old mine. The fact that viewers can own stock in this mine would be revolutionary because it would be the first show ever where viewers actually had a stake in the show they are watching!
Lode mining is far more interesting and exciting than placer mining. You have explosives, history, terminology sights and sounds that most people have never seen plus all kinds of interesting minerals and rock formations as well as some danger.

      Exploring Abandoned Mines awesome idea!

    • @leelokje
      @leelokje 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Sounds like a nice idea but let's look into this idea in more depth.
Here is what I think it would take to make this TV show happen, based on my own, recently acquired, knowledge of mines and gold mining as well as my previous stock market experience. I'm sure there is even more to this and possibly, my information isn't 100% accurate, but hopefully the below will open your eyes if you didn't already know this:
Finding a gold mine that's not claimed takes time and when you do, the question is: will it be a good enough gold mine to base an entire TV series on? If not, you have to keep searching until you do. Who knows how long that will take.
Assume you found a promising and available abandoned gold mine.
      Now what?
First, observe from outside what type of mine this is.
Is it a drift mine with a tunnel entrance you can walk into, or a mine with a deep shaft that goes down vertically or at a very steep incline?
Suppose it is a drift mine that has a network of tunnels without any lower levels or shafts.
You have to explore it first, of course.
Who would like to go in first? Not me!
      Here is why:
Expect any or all of the following:
Bad air! (Carbon dioxide, white mold spores, radon, insufficient oxygen, dust, etc)
      Rattlesnakes
      Bats and rats
Deteriorated timbers holding up the structure
      Animal droppings containing diseases
Explosives, such as dynamite or nitroglycerin that over time have reached a stage where they are easily ignited.
Ground explosives to protect mine and if stepped on, may explode. Invisible when covered with a layer of dust and dirt.
Fragile, fractured or loose rock walls and ceilings
Collapsed drift tunnels, inaccessible or worse, they collapse while you're in the mine, either killing you instantly, burying you or if it happens right behind you, trap you inside and kill you when either the oxygen runs out or from dehydration.
Suppose it is a deep shaft type of mine, that looks like a big hole in the ground. You may see an old ladder for access.
Who'd like to go down this ladder first?
      Not me!
Never use the old ladder! If it breaks and you fall off, you're done. You can't trust an old ladder. You will need rock climbing equipment to descend to the bottom of the shaft or a rope ladder.
There could be water collected on bottom that blocks access to the tunnels. If you fall in, unless there's a rescue crew nearby, you may drown if it's deep enough. You can tread water only for so long.
Never enter an abandoned mine unless you're well trained, well equipped and have a crew with you.
Suppose you found a mine that's safe enough to enter and its structure and tunnels can be repaired where needed for safety.
The next big question is, or maybe this should have been the first question:
How accessible is this mine by vehicle or foot?
Since you're dealing with mountainous terrain, it is very common that there are no roads, not even dirt roads going to the mine. Or... because the mine is so old, any previous roads, tracks or paths may have eroded away.
Or maybe there is a hiking trail still intact but it is 3 miles long and has an elevation increase of 1500 feet.
How is any film or construction or mining crew go up there daily for months and months or years? You'd be best of building a new road. That requires permits, lots of money and lots of time. The same goes for inspecting, fixing, and making the mine safe and secure.
Getting to the point where you have a safe, accessible and gold producing mine so a film crew and a group of miners can start a TV show will cost a fortune and it wouldn't surprise me if it took a couple of years.
Let's not forget that many old mines are located in extremely remote areas and not nearby any towns, unless it's a ghost town, that has all of these conveniences such as food, water, gas and lodging. You'd have to bring in all your supplies by air or land and build a camp for the crews.
What if it takes 2 to 3 hours one-way daily to get from town or camp to the mine?
Here are more huge challenges to face. Since most abandoned mines are in the southwest of the US, you will have to deal with:
Some extremely high temperatures! Huge temperature differences between day and night, summer and winter.
Most often a complete lack of water in the area.
Flooding dangers during the monsoon time that can last two months.
In other words: some of the harshest environments in the US.
Assume somehow the perfect gold producing mine was found. The next question is, how do you haul the mining material out of the mine? Where will you take it? How far do you have to go?
Most old mines had a processing mill and sluice built right outside the mine's entrance. But is the mountain side level or flat enough to build this operation on? Maybe the old gold processing equipment is still there. But it's old, rusted and inoperable by now.
How do you power the mills and sluices? You'd need generators. You need lots of fuel. If location is remote or hard to get to, hauling the machinery and other heavy equipment up there won't be an easy or inexpensive task.
The best way to extract or separate the gold from the raw material from the mine is by rock crushers, classifiers and sluices.
The rock crusher goes to work first and uses a lot of power. Next the classifiers. Classifiers are simply colanders of different sizes the material has to fall through to separate the rocks and coarse and finer materials from each other. A sluice is a long bed on an incline with special mats or ridges on bottom that when the finer material runs through, the ridges capture all the gold because gold is too heavy to jump over the ridges.
The problem is, sluices need water to work best. You have to get that there. If you're smart, you recycle the water but you still need to replenish water constantly because you lose water by evaporation, spills and material sucking up water like a sponge.
Ask yourself this now: why are there abandoned gold mines in the southwest that still have plenty of gold left in them?
The old miners of the 1800's and early 1900's sure deserve our respect, don't they?
Let's move on to the part of people buying stocks of the mine. Again nice idea but not easy either.
Having been a stockbroker in the past I know it takes years, lawyers and lots of money to set up a corporation that has public, not private, stock distributions. From what you wrote, I assume you want the stock publicly traded. This means the stock has to be listed on a stock trading platform such as the NYSE and Nasdaq stock markets and apply for a symbol.
Unless the company already has a good financial track record and a good amount of assets and cash at hand that put a value on the company, it won't be accepted in the stock markets I mentioned above. It won't meet the minimum requirements. This means it can take years to reach these requirements.
If the stock is held privately or not listed on a major stock market, the process is quicker and easier but stocks are still based on the value of the company emitting them, and if not, on a promise or expectation of a future value at which point it becomes a very high risk stock which will make it attractive to investors who like the gambling aspect of buying stocks which is a much smaller group of people.
As you can see, no aspect of this idea is easily achieved, simple, inexpensive or fast enough to get it going.

I don't disagree with most of your points. It wouldn't be easy fast or cheap to produce. I know a lot about abandoned mines I have been in hundreds of them. I have documented over 100 on my channel. bit.ly/BCMINES
