In a city his home would be slum housing. On the beach, a gracious abode. It just depends on how one looks at things. I envy him and his wife. As a fellow Michigander I wish them health and good luck. 😁 👍

I've worked in the Mining Industry as a Dump Truck Operator/Driving Instructor at various open cut gold mines over the years, yet never really heard much about beach mining.
Roger and his wife are definitely living the dream while making money for Jam! 😎
I love the idea of doing something similar myself.

    • @TheCapns

Considering that daylight lasts for 24 hrs during the peak summer months and it starts thawing out around late spring there's probably about 5 months of ideal weather however if you find a hot spot then you can make enough money to get you through the rest of the year when your down due to inclement weather conditions.

We have tons of rivers and creeks but the glaciers passed over us and dumped their gold further south. If i mined the beach here for ten years i might get a gram. Lol there is a nearby river with a tiny amount of flour gold but its all protected area no sluicing or digging allowed 😢 maybe someday ill make the trek to Nome and seek my fortune. 😊

Beach mining is a fun activity and I've done it here on the Kenai Peninsula a few times on my buddies mining claims.
But as a long time Alaska resident I do have to say that I hope these squatters on the beach clean up after themselves.
Otherwise all those tents and tarps and all that junk will end up all over Alaska's beaches and in our oceans.
When people like this go broke they tend to just leave all their junk behind and find a way home to wherever they came from.
Leaving the locals to clean up and deal with their mess.
I sure hope that's not the case in Nome but, I'm not going to hold my breath.

Beach miner? Oh man, thats gotta be the hardest kind of gold mining.
Here in California we have several places where we have gold granules
on the beach. But MAN is it difficult to separate the gold from the sand.
Thats why no big outfits ever worked a beach. You have to move a
mountain of sand for a tiny bit of gold. Only an individual who does not
mind low returns will work a beach for gold.

Can people make a living mining the sand on the beaches on the public use land? I heard the guy say the beaches were "bad this year". Do "bad years" happen often?
