I feel like most of it is skill of knowing the medium and how it reacts, he has so much knowledge of the glass and neon from years of experience. The Art and design comes from making what the customer wants. My Opinion
Dear artisan: you are thanking people for allowing you to make this video, and it's OK, but I want to thank you for explaining such kindly how neon signs are made. I've been wanting to know this for all my life and it turns out to be as delightful to watch as I had thought it would.
fun thing is that this is the entire field of spectroscopy works. Different atoms emit different wavelengths of light when excited (electrified) from this we can determine the chemical composition of stars, the chemical composition of (some) planets orbiting other stars, and we can make cool signs as seen above! Blacklights emit UV light and the 'gas' used in them mercury vapor!
Since I was a small child I was always fascinated by neon signs / neon art. I always wished I could have my own neon sign but as a kid getting my own neon was way out of reach. Over the years since then I have collected a few true glass neon signs. True glass neon is so much livelier and so much nicer than the fake imitation LED "neon" that has become popular these days. I do envy your skill and abilities in creating neon signs/art. I would love to learn how to build my own glass neon signs. Watching this video is very inspiring. It also reflects the years upon years of knowledge and skill that can only be acquired via hard work and devotion.
What a wonderfully delightful, and handsome man Gérald Collard is! He has not only a very much admired talent, but also, a fantastic accent! I enjoyed this video so much because of him, AND I learned how neon signs are made. Fascinating, colorful, bright, and happy workmanship!
One of the manual Crafts / Arts that soon will be forgotten. Or NOT? Colorful, Highly skilled glass work, artistic and technical at the same time. Also scary: 10000 Volts can break your heart... Literally. This is one of the crafts I would have liked to learn - if I were younger.
Wow what a great art. Always love seeing these in a malls or shops, gives me that 80s, 90s feel. Unfortunately we don;t see much of neon lights used in newer structures these days, LED has taken the spot for lighting. There will always be a spot for neon, as it's a long last art. Great video thank you, I learned a lot about this.
whelp! I thought the coloring is from the glass (or the LED) itself.. but now i know that your put some gas into the tube to make it colorful orz And i love how humble he seems doing something so special like this, like mentioning glass blowing stuff, and that end of the video where he gave thanks.
I love your videos. I never even thought about how some of this stuff is made, but it turns out that the process is always interesting to learn about ^.^
this is one of those things that really takes passion to learn, ive always been one that could watch a few tutorials an pick up how to do things an welding was the first thing i ran into that wasn't as easy as watching someone do it but took time for me to get decent an even now i dont consider myself a welder thats work is worth paying for cause its not pretty but is good enough for structural welding and this is the same thing im getting from this. there is a true artform to getting the glass to do what u want it to from the looks of things an isnt something that u can pick up from just looking but is going to take an input to see the reaction of the glass an i assume this takes alot of time, patience and quite a bit of material put into it just learning the feel of how glass moves at these temps an it looks like its getting the glass just hot enough for it to start to soften but not so hot that looses its shape an the blowing through the tube im guessing is either to help keep the inside cooler or to hold a positive pressure to keep the tube from collapsing. id love to get my hands on the stuff to give this a shot just cause i feel like this is another one of those dying techs due to the newer tech from leds.
I'm near retirement and I'm looking for a cool hobby and have always been fascinated with neon signs since I was little kid. Need to find equipment 1st. Thanks for sharing this artform.
This is the only video to watch if you need to understand only the most truely fundamental points of how neon lights are made. Thank you very much for your clear and concise approach to giving a wonderful inisight regarding an art which is timeless, as technical as could be desired, useful and truly beautiful. My admiration only increases to know the art is only a 100 years old and the tools applied nowadays in your shop may be much the same as they were then- however the manner in which the artists of old obtained the tools and material is certainly much different. If I had the time and tools, the piece I would make is a bronze divers' hat being submerged in a cool blue hue. Thanks again.
His voice so laid back the calming effect was like on point I started reminiscing about the time as a kid I went up north to Michigan my grandfather sat and showed me how to make fishing flies I just watched and I just had that same feeling just dejavue man got me all in my feeling with his poetry in the night hahah seriously I’m about to figure out why half my neon sign won’t lite up I have a couple from my moms old healthfood “squash blossom “ a massive open and yellow “vitamins”, “organic food” and supplements I think the organic food one got destroyed in a stupid fight with my brother mom did warn me man to this day regret that there like 24 years old now the freaking power supply on the open sign scares respect into me it’s like 15lbs and flatline heart beat if you somehow made bad contact but the colors so nostalgic well here goes the troubleshoot wish me luck
I've always wanted to do this to be able to create neon tube I worked and repaired on neon signs but I've never actually designed awesome job I will be looking forward to more videos
This is amazing I've always wondered how this was made thank you for sharing your amazing talent with us and this beers 🍺for you kind sir and thank you for teaching and passing your skills on for our future generations
I do lampwork rn I learned as a pipemaker but I'm looking to transition to neon sculpture and light fixtures. I work in a small space. 7 x 9 ish. I'm wondering what the best quality bombarder I can get is that will fit in my workshop. I'm thinking I can use my bench torch as well a the dual headed hand torch you have. Cheers from the state of maine
Great video, it was very interesting, thanks. I would also be very interested to understand more about the electrical driver required for Neon lights, the voltages and currents etc Also any information on the electrodes. Dave
Making neon lights seems like the perfect blend between art, science, design, and communication.

My Opinion
wtf you said bro?
@@AccountSpace unless you come up with your own art. But I feel you. Turning hot glass is in itself an art as well

I didn’t know neon actually just made warm colours and argon made cool colours
Learn something new every day

Hey everyone, thanks for watching. If you wanted to make something out of neon, what design would you make?
Stereokroma i would make a brain lol, i think the curves would make the design interesting to look at
💩 it's gonna be beautifullll
Can you please like my comment
Bassnectars bassdrop symbol would be neat and a challenge!

There is no LED involved .

Your wonderful friend. I tried once bending a glass tube in the lab and it ended a blob!!!!
Awesome
Epic neon light u got there 👌 😂 where could I buy that
BTW he looks french
He is french
Wooooooow
I bet the torches warm up the workshop nicely in winter
so Basicly to get the different shades of the red color one should fill the tube at different concentration of the nobel gas ? i love this handcraft
I would love to learn how to do this and to blow glass.
It might be a little inefficient but a custom water cooler pc with neon sign like bends and designs would be dope.
Absolutely amazing! I've always loved the aesthetic on neon signs, and now I get to see how they're made!
Sou vitreiro também muito bonito a art do Neon parabéns meu amigo 👍
He would be the king in water cooling loop mod
very intriguing thank you
