I own a neon shop in the united states and its so fun to watch other neon benders in other countries, their techniques and equipment are so different, really interesting perspective!
actually don't be because I got my newest neon sign a few days ago from Christmas and the thing is they are packed with so much foam for a good reason so don't worry about that @@dubuyajay9964
This video really makes me appreciate the immense craftsmanship behind the creation of neon signs and hope it will find its way into modern art.... Love how you put together a full-fledged documentary in 15 minutes.
It was really inspiring to watch him work as we filmed. Me too, I hope neon never dies! Thanks for watching and we're glad you enjoyed the documentary style :) - Julian
I agree with what that Japanese glassblower said yeah that's what we're called glassblowers I've been bending glass for 45 years since LED took over I take old tailgates and put neon on them turn out really cool
there are some ways to have specific color come out of the tubes 1) the fill gas. in neon signs its usually either Neon (glows orangish/red) or Argon & Mercury (glows blue). other gasses have different colors & characteristics but are usually only used in special-effect/art tubes. 2) the powdered phosphor. it coats the inside of some tubes and glows a particular color (the fill gas contributes as well). e.g., Blue phosphor will glow blue when the tube is filled Ar/Hg, but will glow Pink when filled with Neon. 3) the glass color. there are a large variety of colored glass tubes available. they are made in Italy and are more expensive than regular clear/coated glass.
Beautiful short documentary! I always wanted to know exactly how neon signs were made and this made me feel like I was there. So cool! New LED 'neons' just lack that flickering, breathing quality that makes neon so magnetic and attractive. I always relate the word 'craftsman' with wood and earthly elements, but the term makes perfect sense, Yukinobu is a true craftsman, an artist of the neon! Also, I appreciate how this documentary relies purely on ambient sounds, it makes it more immersive. If there was music at all times, I think viewers couldn't engage that much, it would have covered all the unique sounds of this studio / lab. Excellent direction! Subscribed!
Thank you for such kind words Luigi! That was really the intention when filming and editing this video. To give you all at home the most authentic experience possible without actually being there. And to also showcase the skills of people like Yokoyama-san to the world!
I was surprised you didn't get the guy to make you a sign for 'Japan Pro', you could have had it as your header on youtube. I really fancy trying this art form.
Haha yea that would have been cool but Yokoyama-san makes the signs based of a design schematic. This was a design he has made many times before. Not sure we could have spent 3 days there while he completed something that complicated though! - Julian
@@JapanGo Thanks for video its great seeing such craftsmanship especially with something so cool as neon! Could you send links for this and other Japan based neon shops? We'd like to inquire getting our logo made on a neon sign from Japan as one owner (my wife) of our business is from Japan.
Hey Loki’s Dad, that sounds like a perfect setting! Yeah there’s a lot of hidden gem stuff across Japan, and I hope you’ll be able to visit again to discover them 👍 - Yasu
Really interesting! I hope this is an art form that doesn't die out, it takes a lot of skill for sure. Are you going to cover more 'lost'/traditional arts in the future?
Hey Gary. Glad you liked it! Yes, I think such ‘making by craftsman’ videos will be one of our standard series and that includes lost/traditional arts - Yasu
Sure neon is better but I like seeing stores here using both led and neon. Some led neon signs look great. Led is basically more intense and bright but you can't beat classic neon. But it's more difficult to make and can break.
as much as I love Neon signs it pisses me off how more common LED ones are than frecken Glass tube gas neon ones which makes me made and yet this video shows us we need more of these!!!
@@JapanGo noted, thanks. I've found if you look in to this, these companies are very focussed on large outdoor signs, so it looks like there's a bit of consultation involved if you want one.
Oh yes, if you wanted something bespoke then you'd have to discuss the details with them and I'm sure the cost would go up a fair bit but there's a lot of work that goes into it. This Mt Fuji piece is one of their more standard 'off-the-shelf' designs aha.
I have a real glass neon signs but they don't get hot their usually always room temp idk why but one of them is I'm guessing they have more efficient ways of making the gasses make plasma more efficiently

Can you recreate some of this? They seem nice...but I'm afraid of overseas shipping breaking them. :(

Wow, this is super useful and interesting , thanks for sharing!
There are actually helium, neon, argon, krypton and xenon filled tubes bent into the symbol of the respective elements sold to element collectors.

Amazing work
I always loved neon signs, since I was a child, and also always wanted to make one myself, maybe one day I'll be able to.
As I watch bathed in the light of my neon beer signs. Great video guy's, that was really interesting. Always missing Japan. Thanks 😊

such a great art, i kinda wanna do this too
It's certainly impressive to watch. Definitely much hard than Yokoyama-san makes it look though aha

best part- 5:09. Always wondered how you got long curves without a ribbon burner.
Guys a master. Bet that's hard as hell to do he just makes it look easy.
Wow. Absolutely loving this method, Hopefully this craft stays around. Thank you for sharing.
Such a beautiful neon signs....
And great quality content 👌👏👍
Hi Devansh, great to hear you liked it! We’ll keep it up 👍
Fantastic! Such kool art
Japanese Neon Signs! I love it!
Glad to hear it and thanks for watching!
Do they have a website we can place orders for local delivery?
It seems they don’t offer deliveries right now - but I was told they’ll consider it if they receive more requests for such service! - Yasu

When they do words they have to work from a drawing in reverse so even more difficult.

Which bombarding system do you recommend for a small space. 7x9
Love your channel 😍
how much do these small artsy signs run you?
The one Yokoyama-san made in this video costs around ¥35,000 if I remember correctly. So about $315.

As a nerd obsessed with plasma, the 4th state of matter I will always prefer discharge lighting over LEDs.
You must have a lot of patience learning this art, as I found out 21 years ago. Once you get it right , it seems eazieeeee.
Surpreendente ver a grande técnica por trás da arte do neon! 🇧🇷❤️
Amazing that someone can do with air heat and glas
i love neon ♥️🇧🇩🇧🇩
What torch is he using?
