So glad to stumble across this video! Just bought a 160k 07 super cab 2.3. It runs and looks as new. My Tacoma TRD PRO is doing alot of sitting lately. I'm loving this thing!
I have a Mazda B3000 Dual Sport which I assume is the equivalent to the Edge with 2wd if I'm not mistaken. It's got all the bells and whistles, sits slightly higher so I think it has the suspension package.
Great video, my first truck was a Ranger and I have owned 3 of them in my past. Been looking to get just a haul around truck and this video was very helpful. Thanks!
Our 2011 is our 4th Ranger. It’s an XLT 4X4 with a 4.0 V6 and auto transmission, tow pkg, spray in bed liner. Custom wheels, running boards, custom 2 tone paint (silver over red metallic). I’ve added a K&N intake and a FlowMaster exhaust. I now get 23-25 mpg on the freeway with the cruise set. It’s almost 12 years old and only has 35K miles.
@@pt8614 I had a Ranger with the 3.0L V6 as well. It was a Horrible engine. I was glad the day I sold it. The 2.3L 4cyl and the 4.oL V6 are the best engines for the Ranger. Our 11 has the 4.0. If we didn’t need the hp and torque, then we would have bought another 2.3L.
@@MrBluoct We’ve been buying Ranger’s since the 80s. Our first 2 were 4WD. 5spd manual transmission with the 2.3L 4cyl engine. Those engines were bulletproof. The first one was an XL trim. We opted for a cloth seat. It had vinyl flooring. It was used as a small work truck for our 17K acre ranch in Montana. We’ve Never abused our equipment, but we worked them hard. When that one had 170K miles my wife didn’t have it in 4WD, hit a patch of ice and flipped it in a ditch. Thankfully she was ok but it totaled the truck. It landed upside down but the top of the cab was in the ditch so that’s what saved my wife. We continued using it Only on the ranch and the electrical system fried at 500K miles. It was beginning to burn about 1/2 a quart of oil between changes. The 2nd one had the same power train as the first one. We put just under 700K miles on that one but it wasn’t worked as hard as the first one. It was burning a little over 2 quarts of oil between changes. The 3rd one was an XLT super cab with a 3.0L V6. It ran perfectly until it hit 80K miles and then it started burning a LOT of oil, (5 quarts between oil changes). We started using “Honey” oil in an attempt to keep it from burning so much oil. We finally gave up and sold it. We were honest with the buyer. I think he put a new engine in it. Our current Ranger so far has been the best for our current needs. My brother had an 08 Ranger with the same power train as our 11. He had around 250K miles on it when he sold it and bought a new Tacoma this summer. Our nephew has a 2010 Ranger with the same power train as ours and he has almost 300K miles on his. Most of his mileage are freeway miles. I noticed a gain in hp, torque and mpg in our current 11 Ranger after adding a K&N cold air intake and a 3” FlowMaster exhaust. Our families ranch is in Montana, but my wife and I live in north central Washington state in a very mountainous area. I’m retired and in a few years my wife will retire as well. We mainly use our Ranger for work around our property, which consists of 54.5 acres of mostly mountainous terrain. We have only about 1/2 an acre of usable land. The Ranger is mainly used for hauling topsoil, firewood, gravel, etc. We put adjustable air shocks on the rear of our Ranger so that we can haul heavier loads. Before adding the air shocks, our Ranger could haul 1/2 a yard of topsoil. Now we can haul just over a full yard with 75# of air in the shocks. We finished building our dream home in 19 into the side of our mountain. We’re now building retaining walls into the side of our mountain to create “flat” and raised garden beds. We haul a LOT of topsoil, gravel for drainage and bricks from one side of our property to the area where we’re building the retaining walls. I enjoy the ride quality of the super cab, as the longer wheel base makes the ride smoother. The first 2 Ranger’s were regular cabs and the second two were / are super cabs. All 4 of them have 6’ beds. Because of our age and only putting about 3K miles on our Ranger yearly, this will be the last pickup we’ll ever need to buy… unless Toyota comes back with a 4WD Hybrid super cab with a 6’ bed Hilux. We would consider buying one for the improved mileage. Our favorite Ranger is our current one. I’ve put more into it than any other Ranger we’ve ever owned, only because the other 3 were ranch work trucks. We bought our current 11 Ranger in 19. It had only 20K miles on it when we bought it. It’s Silver. My wife and I don’t like Silver, Grey, or Black, so I had ours 2 toned. It’s now Silver over Red metallic. I also had it reupholstered in Red with black trim and stitching. I put on custom wheels, custom pinstripes, running boards, dashboard cover, window vents, LineX spray in bed liner, tonneau cover, the intake and exhaust, air shocks. It still looks showroom new. I change the oil and filter every 6 months (about 1,500 miles) with Valvoline full synthetic oil. As with all of our vehicles I changed the front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluid at 30K miles. I’ve only towed twice with it, so the tow pkg came in handy. The limited slip rear differential comes in handy. The Ranger’s have proven themselves to be durable and reliable. Our current Ranger is an XLT. Because we plan on keeping this Ranger for the rest of our lives, that’s why I chose to “trick” it out a bit. I get a Lot of compliments on the 2 toned paint and the interior color scheme. I’ve heard of some people yanking their 4 or 6 cyl engines out and stuffing in a 5.0L (302) V8. I’d like to do that with our Ranger, but it’ll never happen. Some of the early 4.0L V6 engines had problems with timing chains and blown head gaskets. To my understanding those issues were corrected with the 08 Ranger’s. The 10 & 11 Ranger’s were the best last 2 years of the original small Ranger’s. Ford made only 2 Ranger’s in 2012. One Ford kept for themselves and sold the other one to Orkin. That one was totaled when someone ran a red light and T-boned the last small Ranger. We had a 2010 Toyota Tundra 4WD, but at 8mpg city and 15mpg on the highway, it was More truck than we needed, so we sold it and decided to look for a low mileage 4WD Ranger. Two days later I found ours in the paper. The original owner was 62 when he bought it and just drove short distances around town. The day after we bought it, we had to drive a 4 hour round trip. It only got 16mpg. Once we got it “broke in” correctly, it was getting 19mpg on the highway with the cruise set on 75mph. After modifying the intake and exhaust, we now consistently get 23mpg and on a few occasions we’ve gotten 25mpg and those times the truck was loaded down with some farm equipment that we needed in Washington from the ranch in Montana. I hope this helps you with your decision on which Ranger is best for you. One other thing, the 2.3L 4cyl timing CHAIN engines aren’t as reliable as the timing BELT engines. If you don’t need a lot of power and want the fuel economy, go with the 2.3L Timing BELT engine. If taken care of with regular maintenance, they’ll easily last for 1/2 million miles. Enjoy your day !

Was gonna say that you have in your title of the video 99 to 2011 Rangers. But I don't see a 99 Ranger present. I have a 99 Ranger and it has a different front end than the ones in the lineup in the video.
I have an 2003 ford ranger xlt 3.0 RWD. I like it, I have done some work to it. Oil pump, pan gasket, rear main seal, front transmission seal. It doesn't leak a drop of oil or burn oil, 206,000 and still runs pretty good. XLT standard cab.
my 3L didnt go thru sensors.. never had an issue with the 3L.. I wanted a 4L but heard many issues with top oiling when starting! What size are those Firestone Destinations on that Edge.. they look great.. im on my 2nd 3L ranger now and its great cept for crappy fuel mileage on highway.. but has 410 gears
For the record I own a 2010 plain white Rnager XL and it has an armrest console, chrome grill, front coil spring suspension, and an 8.8 rear end. Along with traction control and tow mode. I understand it's an anomaly because I've asked. Just wanted to share my unique experience
The XL did come with a cruise control option, there was a Sport that had power options too. The Edge eventually became the Sport, exact same thing in a different name. I’m not a fan of the junky 3.0L either, give me the 2.3, 2.5 & 4.0 all day. These should’ve had the 3.0 Duratec in them instead. Also, power windows didn’t become standard in XLT’s until 2009, plus the window switches going bad in them is no worse than any other vehicle that has them too.
Nice Rangers……..👍 I have an ‘09 2WD Sport (two-door extended cab with the 4.0 engine) that I originally bought new to be my daily driver. I ended up loving the truck so much that I discontinued using it as a driver after about 10,000 miles and rolled it into my long-term collection! The thing is absolutely spotless inside and out - the only thing that’s ever been hauled in the bed is the rubber bed mat that I bought the day I picked it up from the dealership and maybe an occasional suitcase..……😂 The thing that’s funny about this truck is that of all my collector vehicles, this is probably the lowest on the food chain of desirability - yet it gets TONS of attention when I take it out for a drive! I think people are so used to seeing them worked hard and put away wet that it freaks them out a little bit to see one that has been pampered it’s entire life and is still in showroom condition from top to bottom…….😂
It may not be a future "collector vehicle" yet , but good condition Rangers will sell at a premium. I think in 20 years, they will be sought after. The cost of Tacoma's and new Rangers are within a few thousand of an F150 or Tundra. Small trucks are work trucks and seldom setting in a garage waiting to go to Mecum. Plus they are a great swap platform for Windsor 5.0 engines.
I can confirm a xlt sport was available. I saw one at a auction once and I thought the flares and nerf bars was custom. Now I know that that was factory spec which Is even better
I have a 2003 Ranger Edge , 4L extra cab with a matching factory tonnuae cover . The biggest difference between the edge model and all of the others . Is that the edge has Torsion bar front suspension , regardless of whether it was two or four-wheel drive . While all of the other two wheel drive Rangers have coil spring . The Edge also sits at 4-wheel drive right height regardless of whether it's a two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive .
Some of the sport models also had torsion bar front suspensions too. I enjoyed this video. One other big thing not mentioned is that the edge & the XLT off road 4wd models had fiberglass raised hoods. They were quite attractive. That grill this chap who made the video doesn't like came with the fiberglass hood. I like those grills, but they do need a re-spray every few years. Around the same vintage as those grills on the edges, the crown vics and some mustangs had the same look.
I got the deal of a lifetime on a 2001 ranger 4.0 4X4 5 speed super cab rear doors open FX4. AC daily driver in absolutely beautiful condition it's a Florida truck no rust anywhere runs perfect all the timing chains and the gears and the tensioners have all been changed the truck in this condition is a rare find. Got it for $750
Had a 2000 3.0 V6 XLT Supercab 2wd bought used for $2995 had 114k had a noisy engine leaked coolant alot. Frame in rear was bad around shackles completely rusted and barely hanging on very dangerous yet bought from Stadium GM they wound up taking it back after fighting and gave me a 2004 GMC Envoy Denali which had 200k wasn't bad but wound up having issues but prior to that bad situation and also being married at that time. When was single in 2010 I bought a brand new Ranger XLT 2.3 DOHC I4 Supercab 2dr 2wd now that was a nice truck wish I didn't sell it!
If you do choose to buy a truck like this, I would recommend just taking the jump seats out of supercab models because they’re not recommended for safe transport in any form, especially children, which is why most pickups aren’t even built like this anymore. Personally, I find that the midsize T6 Ranger and compact Maverick get much better mileage, particularly the Maverick Hybrid, which gets 40 to the gallon…both models are also safer and made only in crew cab format.
You bring up an interesting point about the jump seats. They are not safe and they are not common on trucks after 2008. A lot of trucks after 2009 did not come with them. Many of the sears are after market seats and don't even have seat belts.
@@chasingmustangs Thanks for the response…where aftermarket did the jump seats in these vehicles come from? And what do the vinyl seats feel like? Very few vehicles have that kind of upholstery.
The 3.0 is known for head gasket failure and heads warping. This is especially common in warming areas of the country. I have owned 3 trucks with the 3.0 and two of them failed because of warped heads.
@@chasingmustangs Thanks brother! Appreciate that yeah I heard the problems about the 3.0, however I was asking about the 2.3L 4 cylinder vs the 4.0 V6. Do you know between the two of them which is more reliable? Thanks
I think you forgot to showcase the FX4 and Level 2 FX4 models, though that may be because you didn’t have any. The FX4s had optional leather upholstery.
Like I said in the video, I was only talking about rear wheel drive Rangers. In Texas, 90% of the trucks sold are rear wheel drive only. So I really don't get much much exposure to the 4X4 market.
Is it a special edition? I have never seen XLT without power. I have owned a lot of them. Come to think of it, I have never owned an 05 Ranger. Maybe they did some unique builds that year.
@chasingmustangs I'm not sure. I bought it from the original owners wife and she didn't know anything. He had passed away so I couldn't ask him but everything seems to match.
@solaralloyd6157 my guess is it was a special order. My grandfather used to do this on his trucks. He would special order the highest level trim with no power options. He would say that stuff just breaks after the warranty.
I have a 2000 XLT supercab 3.0 with 8.8 rear end 556 gears stock. power locks power mirrors back seats. Sir you have been wrong once or twice. I added bucket power seats I installed a wench in the front bumpers upgraded to bullet rims and off road tires. I updated to Android touch screen audio systems. I have have to 100% rebuild the entire motor. And some other systems. I put in smoked front led projection lights rear smoked 3 light taillights. ect. Still a lot more I had to do. I still have to do the body and paint. Iet me know if you want some pics. I can show the door tag and vin for the proof.
@@chasingmustangs right I found one the other day with 78k on it but they want 22k which seems nuts to me, definitely should have just kept the one I had 😂

Got it for $750
You basically stole it, lol
my 99 3.0 with 228K, xtl is so basic I love it, no power windows, no power locks, no fancy seats, no cruise control
When was single in 2010 I bought a brand new Ranger XLT 2.3 DOHC I4 Supercab 2dr 2wd now that was a nice truck wish I didn't sell it!
my xlt 2006 ford ranger doesn’t have power locks or windows on it
Excellent review o.n this Rangers and perfect overview under chasis information.
i was looking for silver and found gold with this video.
You got a nice collection of rangers do you sell them
Yes, but they are not the cheap ones. I go through an extensive overhaul when they come in. They all have really low miles.
What size of tires do you have on your edge, madel ? I have a 2003 with 46,xxx miles and i really like the look of the wheels you have
Nobody has talked about the back doors. My 03 handles have broken.
Thanks! Super helpful for me as I look all over the West for what I want, which is a 4.0 2wd Supercab, low-mileage. It's hard to find.
4.0's are really hard to find with low miles. Plus, if you do see one, they are usually at a high premium.
@@chasingmustangs Just found one that looks pretty perfect.
Is there a way I could run it by you? I would really love to get your quick take.
@@Yowzoe sure
I have a 2011 ranger sport manual 4.0l with no a/c and no powered windows or locks. I love the thing.
Less things to go wrong. The simpler the better.
i love all the 83-2011 rangers.but prefer the 1st gen for simplicity & reliability.
Very informative! Thanks!!
So for say a later model, a 2007-2011 model, which engine is the most reliable? The 2.3 4 cylinder or the 4.0 V6? And why? Thanks
Thanks
@@Padawanpryce I would go with the 2.3 if not using it for towing. They last forever and take very little maintenance.
@@chasingmustangs Thanks man sounds good I appreciate it!
Thanks for the breakdown!
These trucks should’ve gotten a significant update after 2003 or so, they just got so outdated.
I just bought a 2003 edge super cab. Looking for vinyl seats. If anyone can help me out it would be most appreciated. Thanks.
check your local junk yard and maybe you will get lucky.
I just bought a 2011 Ford Ranger sport super cab 4x4 that has 18,030 miles on it
Wait. But mines a sport with the flairs and also power eveything.
Thank you for sharing
04 ranger edge 3.0 5speed best truck I ever had wish I could find another one
I have a 2011 XLT Ranger 2.3 Extended cab 28k miles I also owned a 1991 Ranger xlt with the 2.3 I miss my 1991
You have a really valuable truck. It's amazing what low mile rangers sell for.
2000ford xlt v6 ext cab. Est in Houston
What about the stx
LOL, I did not have one to show.
my favorite ranger is a XL long bed, regular cab.
I have an 05 xlt supercab.. Manual windows and locks, 4.0 manual, rear seat delete, ac, no cruise but all the cubbies.
I still have a 2000 XL sport . 2.5 l4 . 273000 miles. Still used 5w30 !
Really rare to to see Rangers with the 2.5l. I have never seen one.
@@chasingmustangs that’s what came in mine.
The 4.0 came from late 1987 to 1990 2.9 both came from Germany I have a 1999 Ford ranger 2.5 stepside bed
Great video!
I have a 2005 ford ranger edge 2wd. And it’s clean low mileage.
fyi... you can get a stripped down edge. My 2001 edge is a standard cab, 2wd, am/ft stereo only, no door pockets, and no power locks/windows.
Sounds like Ford had more options in the early 2000's than the late 2000's in the Rangers.
I had a 03 ford edge single cab 3.0, sold it with over 200k miles on it, regretting it, been looking for a low miles one but the 4.0
4.0 are very hard to fine. I saw a 4.0 with 400K miles the other day.
@@chasingmustangs right I found one the other day with 78k on it but they want 22k which seems nuts to me, definitely should have just kept the one I had 😂
@@ET74019Why not get a used Maverick hybrid instead? It’s a lot better on mileage and especially good for hauling family as well as towing.
I love my 1994 RANGER
3.0 runs very very well despite oil leak for me sucks on gas tho old basic tech works well tho!
4.0 is more horsepower way more unreliable
Good ol ford oil leak at 7:28
Good car
I have an 08 and I don't think the ranger is a car I think it is actually a truck.
You caught me, lol.
I think they are Trucks
Yes they are trucks, but on the light side.
Found a 2007 Ranger XLT 2.3 inline! 24,000mi. $7,995 out the door! Mint condition!😁😄
