I own an 02 Ranger 4.0 SOHC with 145,000 miles and I'll say one really big thing to look for if youre buying a used one in the 98-2006 4.0 SOHC models is take it for a test drive to get the engine warm then let it sit and idle and LISTEN for a constant or intermittent rattle. The timing chain tensioners are poorly designed in these years and when they fail the chain destroys the flimsy guides and the chain will get more and more slack til it jumps timing and fails catastrophically.
I daily a 98 2.5/stick ranger. Coming up on 179k now. Before that, a 97 B2300/auto. Gave that to a friend at 340k, still going. These are solid, dependable trucks that are cheap to own and drive. I'm impressed, that is a nice Ranger! My '07 Subaru Legacy with 166k miles still looks new, though the dreaded wheel well rust finally became apparent on the right rear wheel well, where I see bubbles forming under the paint along the lip. Maybe about the best you can hope for out of a Subaru body - I think 14 years is better than average for a northeast non-garaged Subie!
Dream on. In 2020, the average age of US light trucks and cars approaches 12 years. New research from IHS Markit shows that the average age of light vehicles in operation (VIO) in the US has risen to 11.9 years this year, about one month older than in 2019.

He didn't buy it new but has had it for about 8 to 10 years at least and has put at least 100,000 of those miles on it. It's garage kept and he changes the oil every 3,000 miles and keeps up with all routine maintenance. And luckily he hasn't had any trouble with the automatic transmission either.
I have a 2005 4wd Ranger, 155k miles, second owner, (it was my moms truck bought new), all stock and never been offroad. The charcoal grey paint still looks new. Great Truck and I've always owned Nissan and Toyota trucks.

I loved the rangers. Had a 97 xlt 4x4 with six foot bed. Awesome truck. Sold it last year. Have a family. A two seat truck Dosent fit four. But that 4L six. Kicked arse. Only replaced the ac compressor, alternator, gas float and 4x4 relay. Thought for sure I would go through a thermostat. Never did. Ended up changing the gas float. But hey. Had the truck since 98. Second owner. And those are the only problems I had. Can’t complain. She was a great work truck. Kids loved her.
I bought a 95 Chevy s10 I know we are here for rangers WHICH I LOVE MY GPA SHOWED ME WHY TO RESPECT THEM, but it’s honestly a crazy good truck, with a 5 speed manual and the 4.3 CPI, crazy good shape, and here in the Midwest you can find these trucks a ranger and a s10 for dirt cheap don’t sleep on either even if you’re bias
Breathable application of oils underneath is what you want. Not paint based style rubberized under coat. It starts to peel so salt and water gets under neither expediting rust where it just sits
I take good care of my vehicles too. If you want, I can bring my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee for your review. I bought it new. It still looks and drives like a new vehicle. Zero rust, no oil leaks, no major repairs. I only changed shocks, spark plugs and wires and one door lock. That's it. MY Toyotas had more issues than the Jeep.
The bottom lines is TAKE CARE OF YOUR VEHICLE...I had a 1998 Dodge Durango 4x4 for 22.5 years and had 327,264 miles on it when I turned it in Nov 2020 and got a Tacoma...I still miss the comfort and power of it but she was tired and needed to be retired...I've had to have things done to it over the years.
Kinda what I figured about 3 years ago when I went looking for a reliable used truck. V6, manual, near zero bells and whistles. It's been great to own.
Good video. There used to be a saying years ago, If l rust l bust,no rust no bust. If toyotas rust they don't bust. Unless they a dipped in the sea every day for ten years Then it might fall to pieces. Toyotas are made of good quality steel and a good dipping process to seal the steel.
Scotty 👍 gets more excited reviewing an older vehicle...😀 than a new one with all that electronic crap and plastic beauty covers too much tech negates reliability. scotty is old school spend your money wisely... I couldn't agree more 👍 keep exposing the truth. For a daily reliable driver n/a rules
Had an 08 ranger sport 5 speed . Best truck I’ve ever had . I got rid of it when I had my second kid and still regret it . It was pristine minus a ding on the passenger side from my wife backing into it .
My dad bought an 88’ Ranger XLT in late 1987 in Pennsylvania just the single cab with 4x4. I drove it later in the early 2010s as a winter vehicle as I made a poor choice in choosing mustangs as my daily drivers and passed the 200k mile mark on the original transmission, 2.3L engine and transfer case. Replaced some components through the years to keep it manageable like u- joints, exhaust etc.. but he didn’t even consider getting a new paint job until it’s 25th anniversary as someone trying to squeeze in an alley way with a moving truck an scraped the side. He got it painted, fix some rust holes in the frame himself prior but never the frame. Sold it about 4 or 5 years ago to a guy we knew through my brother even for a few grand and found out later he drove to Colorado and back to Pennsylvania. As far as I know, one of the 3 most bulletproof domestic vehicles ever made other than certain year Chevy Cavaliers and the box style Cherokee Limited.
Good for you even if you can afford it. Smart move. I've never bought a brand new car. Always used and fix them myself or with a good and honest mechanic like Scotty. I know a couple. If you buy a new car that's going to be a bad investment.
Nothing beats that new car smell and new car warranty. It’s not an investment unless you’re lucky. I always buy new. So what if you lose a little money in depreciation, at least you’re not constantly worrying about the next repair bill. Life’s too short, live it up! 🚙🛻🚗🏍

No wonder why they break down all the time. Next year the government will want better mileage and here we go again.

Parts are everywhere and for the most part the truck is easy to maintain.
Tacomas of the same vintage are great but compare prices of used units. Everyone wants a Toyota. Ok by me!
hey folks, my 2003, , bought brand new by me, my ford f-150, still looks like new paint, yipee, thank you scotty, and so glad you live in tennessee, he he. have to throw a ho ho in there ya know...for me!
Had a Mazda B 4000, was a great vehicle. The 4.0 is a great engine. I had the auto, serviced it every 40,000 miles. Kept it for 13 years.
I'm impressed, that is a nice Ranger! My '07 Subaru Legacy with 166k miles still looks new, though the dreaded wheel well rust finally became apparent on the right rear wheel well, where I see bubbles forming under the paint along the lip. Maybe about the best you can hope for out of a Subaru body - I think 14 years is better than average for a northeast non-garaged Subie!
goes to show if you buying brand new get the undercoating for the bottom of the vehicle it pays off in the long run as it shows with that Ranger
Good Sunday afternoon everyone👍✌
afternoon!

Oh man to find a 71 F-100 with a 300 inline 6, all the tools required to overhaul it could fit in one fair sized tool box.
That's a fine ride. Epic love for the manual!
15 years old? That is a new truck! My daily driver is an 89 C1500. My other truck is a 46 3100, but it's got Johnny Cash style from every year since.
Dream on. In 2020, the average age of US light trucks and cars approaches 12 years. New research from IHS Markit shows that the average age of light vehicles in operation (VIO) in the US has risen to 11.9 years this year, about one month older than in 2019.
@@brianevans656 I don't own any millenial vehicles from this century, that's why they still run. I get 300,000 out of engines and 200,000 out of transmissions because I don't read market surveys. I just drive them until they quit and then fix them. Crate motors are
I have a '05 Ranger with the 4.0 L engine 160,000 miles and auto trans. that I bought new -- no problems so far . Well my Ranger was t-boned over 6 grand damages knocked the hell outta the resale value ... Still gonna go on a 2/3 ,000 mi trip this summer --- this ol boy's over 80 and don't have that much more time to see some more of these good ol U.S. of A... Oil and brake jobs is all this Ranger needed.
Good for you man, I'm just looking on craigslist at an '11 4.0 with 100 K and auto trans, and I'm also a roadtripper and hope to go to the southwest from WA State, etc. Just would need a canopy to sleep in.
for 20 years I've owned a '93 ranger that now has 220 K on it, and all its needed has been oil and brakes as well! But I don't quite trust trust it for yet another long trip :-)
The fact that you're 80 and you're doing it is so impressive to me, that's how I want it to go for me. i'm keeping strong and lean.
Did you take that trip across the US of A?
Ford 4.0 with a manual.👍
Lol I love how you bleeped out “snort Coke” 😂
I have a 2005 Ford f 150 4.2 6 125,000 it’s been a great truck recently had to get the transmission rebuilt. The transmissions in fords are weak but the engines run forever
It’s an automatic?
@@danielnanez503 It was an automatic.
My dad has the same truck except his is 2004 Black Flare side and Automatic and it has 178,000 miles on it and its going strong.
The Florida pool pump motor repair guy approved ! that was good info Scotty
Sunday afternoon to you Scotty, hope you and yours are doing well. I can't believe how used trucks especially pickup trucks are so much in demand now .
🧰🙌👍🍺
Did it have a 3.0 or 4.0?
Best truck I ever had!
The BEST paint protector is a garage. Period.
Breathable application of oils underneath is what you want. Not paint based style rubberized under coat. It starts to peel so salt and water gets under neither expediting rust where it just sits
Personally I like using Rhino liner.
Fluidfilm?
@@AldermanFredCDavis I use fluid film from the gallon. It's thick like paste from the gallon and I mix it with gear oil
I did a pain based costing and it so far has lasted 200k, it depends on the brand and amount of coats as well.
Wow, that Ranger is in pristine condition! Very impressed!
Man that's a clean and great looking Ranger...wow! 😲
I have an 07 . These trucks are some of Ford's best made. I love it!
Afternoon Scotty happy Sunday! 🏁
afternoon!
I had 95 chevy truck and had ruffley 500 thousands miles and it was still going strong 💪
shhh...scotty dont wanna hear that.
Scott! It was nice seeing you and the grandkids last weekend
Good video.
There used to be a saying
years ago, If l rust l bust,no
rust no bust.
If toyotas rust they don't bust.
Unless they a dipped in the sea every day for ten years
Then it might fall to pieces.
Toyotas are made of good quality steel and a good dipping process to seal the steel.
I understated my 2020 Tundra with New Hampshire undercoating. Great stuff. Best to do in cooler weather
Scotty picks a straight road that looks just like the one back in TN
I’d buy that guys used cars in a heart beat.
Had an 08 ranger sport 5 speed . Best truck I’ve ever had . I got rid of it when I had my second kid and still regret it . It was pristine minus a ding on the passenger side from my wife backing into it .
Rev up your engines!!! Love the channel Scotty!
My 5-speed ‘09 Ranger, I miss. Unfortunately, my son totaled it, but it protected him - walked away with just a couple bumps.
That truck was drop dead beautiful! Well kept!
Yes, manual transmission is lovely.
There is no way I would buy a new car today. I can afford one but I’m not spending that much
Good for you even if you can afford it.
@@barackblows1942 your average car loses 50% of it's value in the first 5 years. I would not call that a little money. I use to share your belief. Now I just own 3 older cars. When one breaks I just drop it off at the mechanic and tell him to get it back to me when he can. I rotate cars. My cars are paid off and I don't worry about something breaking. I don't have a car payment.

Awesome truck. Great work keeping it in excellent condition.
Many semi trucks are rolling on Alcoa wheels. I believe Ford buys their aluminum from Alcoa for the F series body panels.
Alcoa and Ford spent 400 million to build a new rolling mill at Tennessee Operations in Alcoa, Tn.Retired from there right before it went on line.
The government keeps forcing the auto makers to get better gas mileage. So we got cylinder shut down and 10 speed crapo automatic and cvt transmissions and 1.2 litre turbo gdi engines. No wonder why they break down all the time. Next year the government will want better mileage and here we go again.
My father owned two Rangers. The first one wrecked because of ramming into private property field chasing sheep. The second one lasted 300,000 miles and tapped out. I’m gonna buy one
Whenever Scotty Kilmers drops the new videos I roll up the Number and get all schmoked up
Had a 93 ranger, loved it. Traded it in out 160k only issue was the water pump. Great trucks.
I have a 99 F-350 diesel. 400K. Trans went at 240K. I put in a Jasper and its still running well at 400K. I towed a large travel trailer a lot. A LOT. Great truck.
Very well taken care of👍Just like my 2002 S10 SPORT...2.2 Liter Automatic 200,000 original miles & the original paint too..in Arizona🏜
my dad had a 2002 ranger w a v6 manual rwd, 271k miles when he sold it for 1k, he used to treat it like a dump truck and do burnouts with it and it still ran like a top, they really are the american tacoma
Haha! You do see some rough cars here in Connecticut, especially closer to the water here...and especially on the GM vehicles!
I got an 08 Chevy 171 k miles. Have only replaced tranny, and starter. Truck is solid. 5cylinder is solid.
Scott acts like this guy plows the freeway😅🤣
We still have our 1999 Ford Ranger. Wife drives it to work every day. It has 137,000 miles on it. The truck has been great and we plan on driving it till it no longer drives.
We used to have a Ranger plant in Minnesota, we know all about road salt--believe you me!
great job keeping that thing up
It's a little truck, you can park it in the garage. When I bought my Nissan Frontier, I test drove home and parked in the garage and it fit.
Will enjoy this one, not everyday that scotty praises American cars!
He does if they are well built. Old and wise people like Scotty don't appreciate how some car companies have made cars to be thrown away at 100k miles.
