Thank you for showing the prices. I am in America, but I enjoy seeing what other places have, what the people there are gathering and the prices. I cannot believe how much less expensive the food is in Great Britain than in the States; it is amazing. I have subscribed and I will be watching all your videos,Tilly. You have done a lovely job.
Thank you so much, that's very kind of you! I've been watching lots of US videos too as I find it very interesting, in fact, it was watching those that made me start prepping. I know the prices where you are so much higher than here, and I honestly don't know how we would cope if ours went that high. Stay safe 💕
@@rootofavalon3841 You are doing a good job prepping. A lot of Americans,I am sorry to say, go all survivalist/isolationist or are showing grocery hauls that really do not do a good job of trying to keep expenses down and for nutrition. I am looking forward to more from you.
I’ve shopped in Tesco for years and years and with the recent price inflation and seeing your videos you’ve definitely opened my eyes to Asda and I’ll be giving it a go . Thanks for the inspiration 🙂
I’m in the US but I know here the way it works 100% of the time is that for the vast majority of products the generic is just something that barely misses the quality control for name brand, like the color isn’t saturated enough with certain things for example. The amount of money saved when buying generic is wild, especially now.
@@PerilousRainbow That's so good to know, thank you for that! I know so many people that still won't even try the non branded foods, so this shows just how much they are missing out on, and still paying way more for their shopping than they need to.
@@rootofavalon3841 That reminds me when I used to buy the mark-downs.Pre-last recession people would walk by with their noses turned up. Post recession it was like being in a scrum and the markdown lady said she`d seen people fighting over the items.
Hi Tilly. You're doing a wonderful job with this channel. My husband isn't keen on me spending money to stock up for when the world implodes however he does like our new store cupboard I've built up in our utility room which reminds me of a grocers shop, the type that was around before big supermarkets. I'm going to try to go a step further and see if I can get away with doing more! I've shared your channel to a Facebook Scrimping on a Budget group and hope the Admins will allow it through for all to see x
Hi Linda, well first of all, thank you so much for your lovely comment and for sharing my channel, that's very kind of you! 💕 Good for you getting your store cupboard, my husband is going along with me a bit more now, but to start with he thought I was a bit over the top... and that was before I had much of anything! 😂😂 I'm sure your husband (and mine) will be very grateful we was proactive if things get out of hand with the supply chains! xx
@@rootofavalon3841 yes, let's hope it never comes to it but I'm sure they'll be happy to have some foods tucked away, medicines to ward off bugs, cleaning products for the house and home, toiletries to keep them clean and (maybe most importantly of all 😂) toilet tissue! X
Yes tyvm , you are very organised , I like how you take your time and explain things clearly . Some are so dizzy and barely even pull things out of their bags and then hide it so you can’t even see it really.
What a blessing you have there with this haul! You are wise to do so and as much as you can. Tumultuous times are ahead, but you will be one who will at least sustain through it all. Keep going! I have dehydrated foods for many years so I have a tip. Here in the US, the books that come with most dehydrators tell you to dehydrate at a temperature of 135F, yet I found the outsides would get hard too fast and it trapped moisture in the veggies which in turn caused spoilage for long term storage. I knocked the temp down to 125F and everything was perfect and dried through and through. Just let it run a little longer. Now I know you do Celsius there, so I looked up the conversion for you. If your dehydrator has a temperature gage, I would recommend 51.66 C rather than 57.22 C. I am not sure how your machine or temp gages are. But less can sometimes be more in the long run sometimes. Good luck with your veggies. Loves and hugs! Xx💕
Thank you so much for your encouragement, sometimes I do wonder if I'm doing the right thing by spending so much money, but I know in my heart that it's the right thing to do! ❤️ I am now looking at buying a dehydrator (more money bing spent) but again, I do think it's the way we need to go, especially when we are growing our own produce. I'm currently looking at buying an Excalibur 9 tray... I research everything before I do anything, and I want to get the right one for us, I don't want to have to buy a different one in a few months time. Thank you for the tips, all help is greatly appreciated! Lots of love ❤️💕xx
@@rootofavalon3841 I have the Excalibur and it is excellent! I have had mine for many years and it’s never failed me. The only thing to remember with dehydrated veggies is to soak them overnight for use the next day. You won’t be sorry if you get one. I absolutely love mine. Xx
@@cjblack5925 Oh fab, I'm so pleased that's the one you have, that's made my mind up now, I'm going to order it now as I've been going around in circles and second guessing everything! Thanks for the tip, I'll remember to soak them! ❤💕xx
Ive only just discovered it. I had seen it before but not bought it and when i went to the local asda for powdered milk it was all they had so i thought id try it, have to say i wont be going back to the marvel powder i used to use❤
Baked beans I think is mainly the taste of the sauce, it can always be enhanced with a little of what you like, be it mild curry, smoked paprika etc. On one note now! after a year the Chilli Con carne of the JE range has near doubled in price!!!
Hello Tilly, I have those Fish fingers all the time and they`re absolutely fine and great value. Also you can make oat milk from the Oats by adding water, blending, filtering and refrigerating.Once i`ve moved i`m planning to do it this Winter and if successful i`ll use it to replace dairy (it also makes a lovely creamy porridge).
Hi Chris, my daughter's friend told me about making oat milk, that's such a great idea, I'll definitely be trying that one, thank you! Good to know the fish fingers are good, I love fish finger sandwiches! 🥰
The Asda essentials Milk Chocolate tastes like Nestle chocolate, so if you are a nestle chocolate fan, then it's great. If you are a Cadburys fan, then don't bother with the milk chocolate. The others are fine. Tip with cheaper baked beans, add a splash of tomato ketchup and a few turns of black pepper will greatly improve the flavour.
Actually Sam, we tried it tonight, and I'm a Cadburys fan LOL ... I would agree it's a Nestle flavour, but fortunately my husband loves it, so that's all good.
I live on a small Orkney island. The cost of food here is insanely high. I do miss all the basics price food. Always do a top shop when away visiting family. Thank you for this video. I really enjoyed it. It might be expensive to live where I do but I couldn't ever move back.
Tilly, I love your channel!! It’s one of the most realistic I’ve come across - I’m really loving these Asda Just Essentials hauls! You inspired me on your first Asda video to give them a go - now I’m a convert! If you like roasted salted nuts - the JE version is 25p (I think) and we’re really yum! I actually thought I’d bought peanuts, but these were even better!! Keep up the good work Tilly, it’s just so good to hear from a normal lady, buying normal food, for a normal family, who live in a normal house! If u know what I mean 😂. xx
Have you considered shelf stable uht milk? They come in cartons. Not the fridge ones but the ones stored on the shelf. I used non dairy cartons but uht is found next to those :)
yes I have, but thanks for the tip. It's something I use quite often as I make my own yogurt with uht milk... I actually have it in one of my Lidl haul videos as that's where I usually buy it from. 💕
I'd suggest instead of buying jarred sauces, all though convenient. Buy more canned tomatoes and some tuppawarres. Cook a big batch of bolgnase and then freeze. You'll be able to make bigger batches of bolgnase that last longer and also taste better. Same thing goes for the curry. Just invest in a load of own brand seasonings. You can make so many good homecooked sauces for cheaper. Having a load of seasonings can really make a Cheap dish taste amazing.
Just a suggestion ive found that chicken soup has barely any chicken in the can so i add a can of chicken in white sauce It makes so much difference, love the video x
Hi Tilly. I had he lasagne last night which was delicious and the essential potato pops with our dinner this evening, they are very nice but need some flavour as they are bland but the amount you get and the size of them are perfect so a winner with us. 😊
Never shop at Asda, even though it's just a mile away were we shop, will be definitely trying on our next shop.Thankyou for taking the time and effort of your making your shopping haul l for one appreciate it Julie.
At the moment I really haven't got much to show, so it's just in my cupboards at the moment, I'm certainly not at the stage of some of the big preppers that have huge shelving filled with produce.
Hi Tilly, put your flour or anything which may get weevils in the freezer for 24 hours, to kill them, some say to put them in for another 24 a few days later in case eggs have hatched. Personally I don't do the second freeze. After freezing leave them out to make sure they are dry from condensation before packing away. Although I just leave them in the freezer as it lengthens the shelf life. It depends on how much room you have in your freezer I suppose. Most powdery things can be frozen and stay fresher longer. Nuts, pastry, coffee, butter, cheese (cut block cheese first, and will defrost crumbly), bacon etc all freeze well. Throw in a few chickens etc or whatever. Vacuum sealed things are best because they won't get freezer burn. Maybe think about buying a small ( or larger ) freezer. This can help to get ahead of rising prices too. I would recommend an upright freezer if you are going to be using it constantly because digging around in a chest freezer can be annoying, and you can forget what us at the bottom. Chests are great though if you want to store things that are bulky or you only need once now and then. Check for power useage, though most modern ones are pretty good. The more you have in it, the cheaper it is the run . So fill empty spaces with pillows, or shopping bags, so it's not cooling "empty air". Frost free if you can, but I think are more expensive. It doesn't take much to defrost them with a hair dryer and a bit of unpacking every 6 months or so. Just a thought. Love your channel.
Hi KJ, thanks for all those great tips, we have a small chest freezer, and it's always full, but I'm concerned about getting another freezer because of power cuts and losing it all. I'm constantly researching dehydrators, so that may well be the best option for us, then we can use the freezer space we have for the things that can't be dehydrated. I love that so many people are sharing their tips on here, it's going to help so many people that read them, even if it's a year or more from now! ❤️
@@rootofavalon3841 dehydrating food is a great way as you don't need to rely on electricity to keep it. I have got a dehydrator so will be giving it a go myself. Also, if you vaccum seal it, it takes up even less room (in both freezer or cupbard) and things can last for years. I got very interested in it by watching Mrs woflie at half acre homestead then went onto watch others. Was an eye opener as to what you can preserve
My sisters and I are buying a dehydrator between us, so will be getting one sooner than I expected, so I'm really excited about that! I haven't seen Mrs woflie , so I'll be checking her out, thanks. I've been binge watching The Purposeful Pantry, see haas loads of great information too. I've been really surprised at what can be done with a dehydrator, I think I should have got one years ago! 😂
@@rootofavalon3841 I'm looking forward to dehydrating mashed potato, grinding it to a powder and having homemade instant mash lol. We're gonna need a barn just to store what we can do lol
We buy blocks of cheese and grate it up and put in separate bags and freeze. Butter can also be frozen. Eggs also, but you need to whisk the eggs and put into a container or in freezer bags. Lard is another item that can be frozen. Handy to have in. Yeast you can buy in a 500g bag from Amazon and put it in the freezer. I buy flour and split it into bag sizes I want and put them in the freezer for 3 days and then take out and leave for 24 hours. Then put into brown bags and vacuum pack those up.

That is an impressive haul for the price, pity about the candles. I just completed a 48 hour without power challenge on my channel, candles really are important.
Yes, I was very happy with the amount for the price. I have got candles, and plenty of other camping supplies that we have had for years (long time festival goers) so I'm not too concerned about the candles, but will get stocked up if I see some any time. II will check out your video, it sounds like the type of thing that would be interesting for me!
Hi again, I kinda knew that the candles would be among the first things to go on short or no supply list so I've been researching some alternatives. There's some great TH-cam videos with great emergency options. I bought myself a neck light the kind you would use for doing crafts and its brilliant. I can walk about the house without needling additional lightning saving on precious candles, it lasts for hours and can be charged up when power allows. I also got some solar lights and battery operated fairy lights to string up or bunch together in a glass vase creating a makeshift lamp. Hope these ideas are useful. Keep up with your amazing channel and thank you. Sheila :0) x
Hi there. Just found your channel. A wee suggestion: I mix a big spoonful of Nido into dry porridge oats before adding water and cooking, the powdered milk makes it taste creamy so you don’t need to make it with milk.
Hi tilly I realy want to try that cream cheese .and the chunky chicken as prince's are dear every where mind you could get two in icelsnds for 3 pound but asdas cheaper got to give it ago .you got a good stock there x
Hi Marie, you could just try things one at a time if possible, and then hopefully it will give you a bit more confidence to buy more if you like them. Most of the items in this shop ended up going to the food bank as it was bought with the money we wouldn't usually of had, so we decided it was the right thing to do. We feel very fortunate to be in a position to be able to do that. ❤️ xx
Hi there, thank you for all the prepping information its really helpful and good to know I'm not alone in my thinking and yes the white chocolate is dangerously delicious. Just wondered how many pints of milk you will get from the dried milk product. :0)
I've only tried it in my coffee so far, but I'm looking forward to start using it properly so I can test it out... I'll have a look at how to make cheese with it, that sounds fab! 😍

Hi Tilly. You had a load of essential yellow package foods. What does the cornbeef taste like. As l make a pie out of cornbeef and Don't want to waste it. If it's not tasting nice. Please Tex me back. Love to you Maria 💗 xx
Hi Maria, in my opinion the corned beef is excellent quality for the price, both the tinned and the packet of slices. The tinned doesn't have lots of fat or jelly, and it's not too salty like some I've tried. I made a corned beef hash with a tin and it was a real winner... but I did also try it before I mixed it with anything as I wanted to get a true tase test, and it easily passed all the tests, so I can recommend it. Lots of love ❤️💕xx
The word prepper is not really needed. What people do when buying extra food is simply “ Food Insurance “ Along with having extra food reserves if you have a garden or allotment, you will have alternatives to turn to. Also buying food reserves now you will beat the inflation that is increasing every month. Keep up the good work and remember even a bad gardener eats well 👍
That's a big shopping haul. But as a former Asda buyer and price checker, l can tell you that Aldi have been under cutting us for quite a while. The middle range is where in the past the money used to be made, the budget range used to be sold at break-even, or as a Loss Leader or make a tiny profit; this is largely no longer the case. Aldi profits have dropped by 86% to £36 million as they have said they are holding their prices down, whereas at Asda on the other hand profits increased to over 300 million. Aldi are cheaper or the same on most of the budget range and almost everything on the middle range is cheaper at Aldi. Asda essentials range is great marketing campaign, but prices are rising faster the others.
Hi Thomas, this is all very interesting, thank you for taking the time to explain all that... I usually shop at Lidl, but I really need to go and check out Aldi now and try some of their range!
I have the smaller tins of Nido, at the time it was better value than the large - no idea what it is at the moment. Had a stir fry tonight, down to 1 can of veg left!
I haven't seen any of the smaller tins yet Claire, although they would be better (apart from them being cheaper) because there wouldn't be such a big tin open.
@@rootofavalon3841 I got 4 cans in the end, 1 here and 3 stashed at my parents, they use much more than I do - and being full fat I might be able to water it down a little to make it go further.

A lot of people are going for unbranded including me .I think that they should scrap the best before and use by dates I go by my taste and smell and feel if it feels slimy or smells horrible it's off just think of all the food people are throwing away that is perfectly good love fran xxxx
Hello Fran, 👋 thank you very much. That's interesting, I've never tried their Stockwell range, but £1.40 for a tin of Heinz beans!!! 😮 There have been a few comments saying that the cheap brands and big named brands are the same, it is something that I have long suspected, so it's good to have it confirmed. I agree about the use by dates, it causes a huge amount of wasted food... and it all goes into landfill!! 😭 I do believe that the way people are going to be forced to shop, because of rising prices, there will be more people trying the cheaper brands for the first time, and once they start tasting them, they will be converted and won't ever go back to the high priced branded goods. I hope you have a lovely day, lots of love. 💕 ❤️ xx

I didn’t know about the 3 rule and wanted more milk as a result purchased in Tesco instead half of that stuff is not essential don’t know what Asda are playing at
Hello, Humble Bee, there are a few reasons I'm doing this sort of shopping, because of what is happening around the world it has caused price increases and shortages with fuel, unfortunately that means that everything that has to be manufactured and delivered to the stores costs much more, these price increases will have to be passed on to us, the customers. As you can imagine, this is going to cause problems for a huge amount of people that are already struggling financially. On top of that, all the problems that the global pandemic caused is still having a knock-on effect as it set production back so far. There is a global shortage of fertiliser and sugar, both of which are used massively in food production, so there will be a shortage of crops in the coming year, meaning less food on the shelves. There has been adverse weather conditions around the world, floods, droughts and hurricanes, so many of the crops that were growing were lost. There are a huge amount of factors at work, I have just mentioned a few, but if you look at it logically, there will be shortages of produce, and the produce that is available will be out of most people’s price range. We are already struggling, so I want to do everything I can to look after my family and loved ones by getting prepared as much as I can now.
I’ve tried several lines now and I find them all dreadful quality.I would only swap if I was absolutely desperate, and had no choice financially. The chilli had hard bone fragments. The Tom soup was so acidic it was almost inedible. The gravy granules were tasteless.
You are never in a million years going to eat that much gravy... White vinegar is white vinegar, if you're cheaping out on everything else just buy non branded stuff from anywhere. B&M, it's about 50p for heinz.
most of that gravy when to the food banks, which was the reason we bought it. I will always buy the cheap vinegar when it's available, but at this time there wasn't any, I've since been able to get the 26p a bottle vinegar again from Lidl
As an American, I find it comical that you are complaining about the prices you are paying for food. One of the items, the store brand dish liquid, is about 3x more expensive here and your curry sauce at 37p sells at our Aldi for nearly $3.00 (2.41 pounds). Minimum wage here is $10 (8.04 pounds) an hour. Your minimum wage is 10.42 pounds which is $12 an hour. I know there are other factors. But come on, 72p for two kilos of mixed veg? How can they even grow it, package it, and freeze it and still make a profit? Ridiculous!
You got it wrong... I'm not complaining about the prices, I think they are very cheap! I do however comment when prices have risen on a particular item... that is a comment, not a complaint!
Hi Linda, although, at the moment, there are only 2 of us living in our house, I am part of a huge family, Many of those family members are struggling financially, especially the younger members. In our family, we help each other, and we share what we have, It's always been that way for us, and I hope it always will. And 10% of it (the dry goods) goes to a food bank to help other families. It's absolutely not hoarding, prepping is, as the word suggests, 'preparing'... and it's not just about buying food, it's about learning the skills to take care of ourselves, and our family, mostly by going back to how things used to be done when rations were tight. I would encourage everyone to start prepping now, even if in very small ways. I hope you have a lovely fun filled day, lots of love
@@rootofavalon3841 Thank you for that. I’ve just canned 18 pints of tomatoes so that’s a good start. Now buying more seeds to plant my own vegetables next year.
That's great, I hope you like their Essentials range as much as we do! 😃
Great video, great ideas. Keeping an eye out for candles, and maybe matches as well.
Thank you Julie, I will certainly be keeping my eye out for some... good reminder about the matches too, thank you!
Aww your sweet!! You still gave 10% God bless you. Xx
Tilly. The tinned essential corn beef comes off the same production line as the branded corned beef. Difference is the price, at least £1 cheaper.
Oh does it really, that's interesting! thanks for that information!

My first Asda order is being delivered tomorrow. Thanks to you, Tilly. I very much appreciate your videos, so helpful.
Oh fantastic, I hope you like it as much as we do!

Oh that's really helpful feedback thank you, I will keep doing it the same way then.
I am now looking at buying a dehydrator (more money bing spent) but again, I do think it's the way we need to go, especially when we are growing our own produce.
Xx

Nido is the best powdered milk in the USA that I have found. I always use it for baking/cooking recipes.
That's good to know, thank you, I haven't had chance to try it yet.
I agree!!!
The bald food guy does similar.
If u know what I mean 😂. xx
Hi Fiona, 👋 that did make me laugh!! 😂😂 But I do get what you mean! 😃💕❤️
That would be great, if we had a freezer big enough to use in that way, unfortunately we haven't.
Just a suggestion ive found that chicken soup has barely any chicken in the can so i add a can of chicken in white sauce It makes so much difference, love the video x

Hi Maria, in my opinion the corned beef is excellent quality for the price, both the tinned and the packet of slices. The tinned doesn't have lots of fat or jelly, and it's not too salty like some I've tried. The word prepper is not really needed.
What people do when buying extra food is simply “ Food Insurance “
Along with having extra food reserves if you have a garden or allotment, you will have alternatives to turn to.
Also buying food reserves now you will beat the inflation that is increasing every month.
Keep up the good work and remember even a bad gardener eats well 👍

Hi Patty, I've had a chance to try it now, and I really was very impressed with it.
Hi, hope you are ok, not seen a post from you in ages, hope nothing dreadful has happened. You are missed.

I agree about the use by dates, it causes a huge amount of wasted food... and it all goes into landfill!! 😭
I do believe that the way people are going to be forced to shop, because of rising prices, there will be more people trying the cheaper brands for the first time, and once they start tasting them, they will be converted and won't ever go back to the high priced branded goods. I looked on the tub, but it doesn't say either way, so I did a quick Google search, and apparently you can freeze it for up to 2 months, but the texture changes once you defrost it. The Use by date on these tubs is the beginning of feb 23, so quite a decent amount of time... Use within 5 days once opened.

Why are you doing bulk shopping?
Aah that's a shame... just goes to show how we all have different tastes.
Asda should go back to writing the price on things in pen
The good ole days were certainly the best... and they wouldn't be able to raise the prices so easily!
@@rootofavalon3841 So you're not prepping then? Weird video.
@@orbtastic Of course I'm prepping, but I'm also helping out at food banks... weird comments!
£111.66p Wow.
Are you paid by asda for this
Not at all, I just know how good this range is and I want other people to see they can also save money.
It sounds like hoarding unless you’re giving half to the local Food Bank.
As money’s so tight I’ve cancelled all my direct debits and finding lots of ways to cut down on everything. I do remember rationing after the war and we got through that unscathed so today’s no different except it’s only me! Take care of yourself and your lovely family.
@@lindatoms1209 I've been learning as much as possible about canning as it's something I would like to start doing, so it's great that you've done all those tomatoes!
I'm also going to be growing my own vegetables next year, I'm just trying to clear the garden and then make some raised beds out of reclaimed wood, I'm looking forward to actually getting started with the growing part of it though. Lots of love 💕
What a waste of money. All mine went down the toilet.
