    I'm now in my 70's, was raised to always keep a pantry, for when big bills come in, or visitors turn up or the weather takes a turn..so I've been a prepper for 50+ years now lol.. was fine during lockdown, had soap and loo rolls already in and cleaning stuffs, black bin bags etc, I don't go mad or overspend, just a few items each week, even helps keeping my food bills down.. have candles and spare batteries in too and cold and flu preps, plasters etc. Just always made sense to me, stock is as good as money anyday and peace of mind is precious.

      @@suepoole8323 I think forgetting the ways of past generations is one of the problems my generation & my kids generation
      Everyone nowadays wants the perfect lawn or block paving in their garden (if they have one). My dad told me that his dad (my grandad - I never knew him as he died when I was a baby) turned his front garden over & grew potatoes in it. And his back garden had the greenhouse, henhouse & veg beds in it. Not a blade of grass in sight. And on top of that, a well stocked pantry, baking days on a Sunday for the week ahead & so on.
      Us younger folk (collectively) could certainly learn a thing or two from your generation.

    Lots of people are concerned about tinned food, yes, fresh unprocessed food is better for your health, especially long term. But obviously tinned foods last decades, are easy to store, less expensive to buy, and don't need refrigeration or freezing. Just read ingredients before purchasing.So are well worth storing, and rotating with your other foods. I personally eat a mix of tinned, refrigerated, frozen, and fresh fruits and vegetables, but could survive on tinned food in emergencies.

    • @Suburbanpreppers
      @Suburbanpreppers  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@keithgarland3404 yes tinned items aren’t the best if you can afford fresh & it’s readily available. But if you have a tin of beans or a tin of soup in the cupboard, you always have a basic meal.
      We eat a good mix, similar to yourself. But we’ve also been in a position before where all we could afford was the cheapest available & if it came to a certain amount, we had to stop - regardless of if we had what we need or not. This is one of the reasons we prep. Incase it happens again

      Do it like this. £1 a day (or whatever you can afford to spend) & go shopping once a month just for preps. It was so much easier doing it this way than going weekly with £7. And I think we got quite a lot for £30 considering how expensive everything is nowadays

    Hi there 🙋🏻‍♀️ Great shop. I’m not a fan of spaghetti hoops, but if you blend it with a hand blender it tastes like a nice tomato soup and you can then always use it then for a cheap base for pasta etc. 👍

    Curry ; onion, ginger, garlic, chilli, few spice powders and tomato. Got to be cheaoer in the long run than buying the sauces, and infinately nicer. You need fresh meat, fruit and veg to eat healthily, tinned is in desparation, a last resort, but you've bought a decent variety of ingredients here for sure, just dont keep eating this way.

    • @Suburbanpreppers
      @Suburbanpreppers  วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@GarethVaughan-my1fw this was a shop to go into the pantry for longterm storage/use. This isn’t for us to eat day to day as such. If we have a tight month financially for example, we will already have a good stock of staples so we won’t need to buy them.
      Thanks

    Lots would turn their nose up at ASDA smart price groceries - but check the ingredients and compare to higher priced branded products and see the difference - less salt / sugar / additives . ASDA even paid out $15m so as to keep from being forced to use Aspartame as a sweetener that most branded juices and foods use .
    Used to shop there a lot till they changed to the self checkout crap taking over .
    We don't go for the store cards , way too much info being collected . Noticed in Iceland yesterday the in store radio announced - " get your store card and start saving , just hand it in at the till and show your ID to save " as they want to make certain the data they collect is verified against you .
    I prefer to stay under the radar and use cash as much as possible .

    • @Suburbanpreppers
      @Suburbanpreppers  24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@SaintsofAvalon I get the idea of not using store cards & only paying cash. And if I was making big bulk purchases (a case of beans, a case of hot dogs etc..) then I’d certainly not be making a transaction than could be tracked. But for a £30 shop across 3 shops, I’m confident all will be fine.
      When we 1st got married, smart price was all we could afford to eat. The only difference we found was you get a little less beans/peas/spaghetti loops & a bit more water/sauce. But if things are going south, having extra sauce in the beans or spaghetti loops or extra water in the veg won’t always be a bad thing. You can use some of your dried goods to bulk it out
      Yeah I’m not a fan of the self service tills. It was a nightmare ringing this lot through. I even asked for a till but they said nobody was available for it 😡

    • @SaintsofAvalon
      @SaintsofAvalon 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@Suburbanpreppers David Cameron was the first PM to come out with " WE need the store card data to see what people are buying , and fine those who buy too much unhealthy food " ( unhealthy could be deemed to be Raman noodles or as the government has already told us to eat less fish due to heavy metals contamination - could be tinned tuna ) as he used the then current " fight on obesity " to push for the data . Then Boris tried and failed to allow the breach of data protection . And only yesterday under the new Labour government it starts as the data from schools show how there are more obese children than before = They will soon be asking for the data = We never ever use them and break the paper trail as much as possible . But prior to this our bank started sending out several pages of A4 " breakdowns " of where we had shopped over the full year with their reccomendation's as to where we should have shopped to save money ? - this was the start of using cash as much as possible around 17 year's ago .
      And you have to think about the self serve style of tills that now have camera's = facial recognition data as well as audio possibly collected ( Police system at same head height and they have you move around side to side to get the video just as you do going from basket to scan to bag at the other side giving both side and front view ) with your name etc through use of the card to verify plus what you purchased in one go . Iceland don't have self serve so require ID to complete the " verification " .....

      @@dillonrobinson8468 for us personally, we think short-term events are more likely than doomsday scenarios.
      As an example, we have friends that live on the outskirts of a large town here in the northeast of England & they were his with a power outage that lasted nearly 2 years before the mains power was restored. This was in the depths of winter with snow & ice outside. They had no power, no way of keeping themselves or their kids warm & their pipes froze so they had no running water.
      Another example is when the supermarkets were stripped bare during Covid. Imagine how handy it’d be having the food on hand already so you don’t need to fight the hoards for a bag of pasta or a roll of toilet paper.
      And finally, just this evening we made spaghetti bolognaise. We didn’t realise we had no chopped tomatoes left in the kitchen so we just grabbed a couple of cans from our stores.
      Of course, if someone major was to happen, then it’d be good to have stuff on standby to hopefully make life a little easier for us.
