Engineer John, making memories to last a life time. I worked with John a few days ago. Indeed a great fellow, one of the many awesome folks who keep history alive. I work with the train crew as conductor and brakeman. Thank you for sharing this great video with us. Come back and visit us again soon!
@@PiedmontCentralRailroadI am a retired Lehigh Valley RR engineer. And I used to run ex. Southern F units after they came to New Jersey for Conrail commuter service
I need to renew my membership with NCTM. I sat in the cab of 6133 and 6910 back in 2014. The “Streamliners at Spencer” was spectacular that year. 6133 and her sisters were lettered for my part of SOU: the CNO&TP Kentucky Division.
I paid for a cab ride on the Royal Gorge Route RR circa 2005. I forget the exact model, but an F7 I believe. Exciting. I was saddened by the death of a conductor many years later.
Can you tell me what minute on the video that happened? I do not recall at any point when we were actually moving that he left his seat. There was a point where we switched back to forward from reverse...it may have been then, but we were at a full stop.
You are right! I wish I knew the specifics, but I think there is something back there he needs to do when changing direction. As you are a real engineer, I'm sure you know more than I do about these things. I do know there is a crew member in the caboose with a radio when moving backwards so not completely blind to pending issues on track. I do remember now wanting to ask what he did back there but needed to respect the instructions not to talk to him while operating
@@PiedmontCentralRailroad I'm no certified enginenmen. But yeah, it's sort of a head scratcher on why he got up from his seat. If there was an emergency, a few seconds like that could be catastrophic. That's the first time I've ever seen an engineer get up from his seat to go back to the engine compartment while the locomotive was in motion. I was just very surprised to see that. 😮
@PeytonC09 It is first come, first serve at NCTM for every train ride they do. I've been going there for years and had no idea! I think it was an additional $25-$50 or so for the cab ride (for the two of us). They usually have 2-3 rides per day, so if you miss out on one, you can reserve another. Reservations are only for that day, and you must be present to reserve it. I hope you get the chance! It really was a special day.
That is an awesome place, and I love how they are keeping old iron like these and steam alive.
Awesome video! The engineer is super nice! Met him when I rode on a cab ride in 2601, keep up the fantastic work man!
That was awesome especially the horns
I was there in July of 2007 simply amazing. I have family in Salisbury,NC.

Thank you and thanks for all that you do! All of you at the NCTM are pretty special folks. We are so blessed that you are preserving this history.
One of my favorite things to do at NC Transportation Museum
5:50 And I am happy to see the original control stand and 24RL brake equipment
You sound like someone who knows what they are talking about. Nice!

@iblskeith That is amazing. I would love to sit and listen to you talk about your experiences.
Engineer Johns seems like a really cool nice guy. Best of luck to you sir.

I run a GP7, GP10 and a 1920 060 coal fired steam engine at the HVSY in Nelsonville Ohio and it's a blast
I will have to check that out!
Funny how the slightest honking on the horn will trigger the air compressor to top off the pressure.
Nothing sounds better than a Crosby 3 chime train horn... Quilling is hard to do and doesn't sounds as nice with those diesel train horns
25:48 the good old shave in a hair cut.
I loved that part. Did you see that truck with the locomotive sized air horns? I think that is my next big purchase.
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 that looks very fun
6:05 why do some emd engines start thumping like that all of a sudden
@@VauxhallRailfan that's a great question!
@@PiedmontCentralRailroadHopefully someone has an answer to it..
@@VauxhallRailfan I will ask next time I'm there
It’s the air compressor kicking on to keep sufficient air pressure through the brake line
they should build more track!
No truer words have ever been said. NS owns all the track around them and I have heard a rumor that building track costs 1 million per mile.
Awesome
Awesome!!
If I can ask why did the enginemen leave his seat? If there was a safety control foot pedal the train would've stopped. 😕

At minute 19 he didn't have to go to back when going from forward to backward so that throws off my whole theory.😄
