No it wasn't your imagination or a dream you really have found a methodical electrician. Why cant everyone be like John Ward. Neat tidy organised professional and safe. My local electricians didn't even use earth sleaving in my new sockets they left copper showing and rushed everything. One young sparky fresh out of collage charged me £ 500 for 8 hours work. He supplied one consumer unit and 5 of the cheapest socket fronts and Included them in that price. I now do all my own work. Yes i am now a jack of all trades master of none. But im neat tidy and safe, taking my time to get things right the first time. Iv just replaced all socket fronts and switches through both my houses its mk throughout and safe as houses ahhhh i can finaly relax feel safe and even sleep much better now. Thanks John.

I also like the test equipment you used. considering your mains current is 230 opposed to our 130 mains, grounding is crucial. we wouldn't want anyone to come to any shocking conclusions LOL

Over the years I've encountered quite a few B22 lamps where the solder has cold flowed around the brass pins effectively jamming the lamp into the base, something that wouldn't happen with a Edison screw lamp base.
I ordered a pendant light shade and parts from England and it came with a b22 fixture. I wasn't sure how to insert the ground wire since it was on the outside. This was a perfect demonstration. Thanks.
Thanks John, only had two wires and couldn't see any marks for positive or negative on the socket, you've explained that the polarity doesn't matter, the earth must be concealed inside as only blue and brown are visible but its a three way plug. Working well, thanks
when I refurbish old/antique light fittings it is often the case that I will use gold coloured flex. The customers seem to think more of this than the fact that their light fitting now has an earth facility and there no longer in danger of electrocution !

I've just wired a brass bayonet fitting to a lamp today. Note when your mounting the brass fitting to a lamp all metal with metal 10mm rod. You will need a metal washer for the earth for the lamp to work. Also a wooden lamp i changed a fitting from plastic bayonet to brass looks more nice antique looking
Our national standard in Australia is bayonette as well. But during the last ten years we've been getting cheap imported stuff with edison screw in discount shops and Ikea.
Also I personally hate the plastic holders, they deteriorate and fall apart due to heat and age.
These are so much nicer than Edison screw bases, many of the screw bases I have encountered are very low quality, I've even torn the screw insert out of the ceramic base by over tightening.
and don't get me started on those new plastic utility light sockets that are all one-piece molded and so easy to get the light bulb to miss screw into and jumping the threads.

When reassembling, always make sure you have aligned the lamp holding piece (has the L-shaped slots) correctly with the ceramic piece otherwise the contacts on the bulb won't line up with the pins and thus no light.
Yes there are notches etc. to line it up but it is possible to get it wrong and spend ages trying to work out how come there's power to the pins but the bulb doesn't light up...or so a friend told me....😉
Edison sockets are by design safer than a bayonet bulb, 2 reasons first the plugs that have been in usage since the 70's are polarized one side flair's out that is the neutral and that is what connects to the screw part that simple
The outer metal part on a bayonet bulb isn't connected to anything, the only way to get a shock is to remove one and shove your finger right into the socket with it switched on.
All UK plugs and sockets have been polarised for over 70 years.
Hi! Amazing video! I bought an old lamp the other day with bayonete brass bulb holder - the earth wire runs through a hole on the bulb holder and is held in place by a screw/metal washer on the outside of the bulb holder, wondering if this is safe? Odd to see an exposed wire on a lamp fitment right next to the switch... Any advice is greatly appreciated. Ps clearly im not an electrician 😂
We don't use too much of screw in bulbs either as to how much we use push and turn bulbs.

Do we have any history on why we use B22 over Edison connectors? I am guessing its a legacy thing . Bayonet fittings overall are superior to Edison in my opinion , the only good thing about Edison is that you can know the polarity ( assuming that its wired correctly ). I don't have access to the BS EN 60238 but it makes sense that the centre tap is connected to the line.
I would believe it was patent and trademark issues, but after a while you get to a point where you're stuck with what you have even though other countries might have a better standard.........
It seam easier to accidentally touch live contacts when a lightbulb is not fitted with B22 over Edison, assuming that the Edison holder is wired correctly the live conductor is the one at the bottom of the socket, practically impossible to touch if you don't stick a finger in it on purpose.
Also the Edison socket seems to make inserting a lightbulb more easy because you don't have to align anything but just screw it in, considering that most of the time you are on a instable ladder trying to reach a bulb in a fitting where maybe you can't see the bulb because it's behind a glass or something, Edison is more immediate.
And lastly with Edison sockets you can turn of a light without removing the lightbulb by just unscrewing it just to have the bulb not make contact with the terminal, but still screwed to the fixture.
sometimes the shade ring is over tightened on and difficult to remove due to the limited access from the shade itself
I was able to remove one recently by putting a cable tie around it and twisting at the cable tie join with pliers...... saved trashing a good light shade

Question
i know live can be any on the two in a bayonet socket but what about ES ones
yes the outside should not be live for safety but from a working point of view can the threads be live
i ask because i see many cheap LED bulb doublers on Amazon, bayonet to two ES and was thinking if they were made wrong and the threads were live would a ES LED bulb still work, baynets LEDs can be ether but can ES LEDs
I think there maybe some rectification of ac to dc in the lamps electronics

I'm presuming the springs are duff in the holder .. how could this be tightened?
Failed springs are unlikely, and pressing the pins with the power off would identify that problem. New lampholder if the springs have failed.
More likely is a loose connection in the wiring somewhere.

+Adam sturgeon Discontinued years ago. The Clare B255 is the nearest equivalent still manufactured, although they are expensive items to buy new.
Other appliance testers are available, Also look at Seaward (same company as Clare), Fluke, Megger and Kewtech. Beware though, there are some dodgy testers available on eBay and Amazon. Identifiable by having what bigclive would call a deathdapter on the front instead of a proper BS1363 style socket.
What "accent" is that? Like during a sentence, it starts out fast and normal volume but the ending word(s) are slowed down and a lot louder.
No ferrules on stranded wire in a direct acting screw clamp?

+stefantrethan Yes, it's standard. The screws are shaped for it. There's nothing wrong with ferrules if you have them though.
+TheChipmunk2008 Well at least he didn't tin the ends, which really gets my blood pressure up, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and believe the manufacturer is OK with that, EN 60999 notwithstanding. ;-)

The screws in most reasonable quality lampholders for UK use have a domed tip to grip the wires without cutting through. I believe the practice of simply twisting and doubling the wires is so engrained that few people consider ferrules. Ferrules are much more important as you say with high loads, and with multi strand wire. 19 strand lighting flex isn't too much of an issue.
+TheChipmunk2008 I've only ever found one tight tinned connection, and it had been re-tightened so many times the clamp was down to bare copper with all the solder squeezed out. All others I came across were loose, many to the point of visible overheating and even some with completely missing screws. I'm sure lives were lost to this nonsense (in fires), since it was fairly common around here some decades ago.
To fight for the ferrule is pointless, the old guard will never change and all the clamp manufacturers have switched to cage clamps or other technology that makes it optional anyway. I've done the twisting and doubling-over thing in a pinch, but I make a point of at least putting the screw on the bent over end. Done with care it's reasonably safe but I wouldn't exactly show it on youtube since I don't think it is good workmanship. Ferrules can be done badly too, if they are not crimped gas tight.
+stefantrethan Pendant sets sold already wired together don't have ferrules, often the wire isn't doubled over either.
